Community News The Apple of Your Isle will be staging another Apple Day on Saturday 13 October from 11 to 3pm at the Old Rectory gardens in Epworth. For more details contact Ann Hindley at ann@hindley.gn.apc.org or follow us on our Facebook page.

The folk dances run by local folk dance band Lys St Georges continue this autumn as follows: Westwoodside Village Hall: Thursday 4 October Thursday 11 October Each dance starts at 2.30pm and lasts for 2 hours.

Isle of Axholme Group of the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust News Thursday October 4th 7.30pm at Stephen Jones Hall (rear of the Methodist Chapel), Low Street, Haxey - Caistor hedgehog rescue have agreed to come along and tell us about their work. As you probably have heard on the news, the number of hedgehogs in the wild has been declining drastically over recent years so it will be interesting to find out what is being done to help them. We hope you will come along, everyone is welcome, you don't have to be a member of the Trust. We have a small charge of £1 to cover the room costs and we have a raffle and refreshments. Our meetings are always on the first Thursday of the month from October to May in the Stephen Jones Hall in Haxey. ROYAL AIR FORCE LINDHOLME Adapted and Edited for publication by Anthony Catherall acknowledgement to Margaret Draper Minutes of an Extraordinary Meeting held on 28th September 1942 Horse Drawn Transport: Squadron Leader Lindsay explained that owing to petrol rationing restrictions it was considered that a horse drawn vehicle was desirable.

The matter was then fully discussed. Squadron Leader Lindsay stated that a horse could be obtained for £35 and a set of harness for £5. It would be possible to buy feeding stuff for the horse.

The outfit would be available for hire by sections at a fee, and the cost of a 1/- per passenger would be made to Officers on Mess journeys.

It was proposed by Squadron Leader Wilson and seconded by Flight Lieutenant Sharp that the committee be authorised to purchase the following items, at the prices stated: Horse £35, Harness £5 and the vehicle at £17. This was unanimously agreed.

Minutes of Mess Committee Meeting held on Monday 2nd November 1953 The PMC intimated to the Committee that it had been necessary to call in a Vet for the horse which was purchased and that his report was to the effect that the horse would not suit the Mess’s purpose. It was agreed that the PMC negotiate with the person from whom the horse was bought, with a view to returning it to him and recovering the price paid.

CHAPTER 4 The unit diary tells us that after VE Day the transition to peace-time conditions began. The staff worked hard training crews to form the ‘Tiger Force’ of Lancasters scheduled to bomb Japan but now there were distractions from the main task. Aircraft from Lindholme flew over Germany again but this time on ‘Lindy Trips’, trips arranged so that station ground personnel could see the damage caused to the Ruhr area by the incessant Allied attacks. In June 1945, fifty-six tourists patronised the ‘Lindy’ organisation and during the next month a further ninety-five travellers flew over the Ruhr.

The station records are no longer full of training details but now show the tremendous changes that peace inevitably brought. In one month 5,717 tickets for the station cinema were sold and no less than 430 people attended a concert arranged by the Music Circle. ‘EVT’ – Educational and Vocational Training, became the order of the day; the proliferation of classes included Furniture Design, Watchmaking and Hairdressing. In June 240 students were on the class registers and, with resettlement in mind, trips were arranged to local factories and firms so that people leaving the Service could – often for the first time – see what civilian life was really like. There were other changes too. One young NCO of that era recalls: “training slackened off, then the bull started, there were parades, and we marched to and from work, there were drill competitions between the WRAF and aircrew and NCO drill courses” (1) The defeat of Japan coincided with an outbreak of enteritis on the camp and 178 people were laid low in sick quarters while the rest of the camp celebrated the final victory. There was apparently considerably more excitement during the VJ celebrations than there had been for those on VE Day. (2) This was perhaps appropriate as the celebrations marked the end of an era. The main task was now in suspense and changes were bound to follow.

EPWORTH TOWN COUNNCIL NEWSLETTER Grant funding: The council has power s to gr ant fund locally based voluntary gr oups. Application forms, and guidance are available on the Epworth Town Council web-site.

Recent grants include: £550.00 for Free Summer Sports held at Epworth Leisure Centre on Tuesdays during the summer holidays; £250.00 to the Isle Community Choir towards various events and £250.00 to the Isle of Axholme Physically Handicapped Society towards transport costs and room hire. Best Kept Village Competition: having not been placed in the competition this year , we will be deter mined to do better next year. Whilst community planting, especially in the Market Place won high marks, and the hanging baskets were a “strength”; litter, in central and prominent places in the town including car parks and playgrounds, was a problem and lost marks. Individual properties and businesses were commended for their summer planting.

Help with the planters is always appreciated and the council thanks the volunteers who currently tend the planters.

The Beacon of Light, a national event, will be lit on Sunday November 11th at 7pm after a shor t ser vice and “the last post”; volunteers marshals will be required, further information will be released nearer the time.

Community consultation: following a successful Epwor th Show, the town council has continued the community engagement with two events in Epworth. Resident’s feedback is being sought on parking, the future of the Ivy Andrew Hall site and the North Lincolnshire Council Local Development Framework.

Romeo and Juliet visit Epworth Old Rectory On a glorious evening on 31st of August, Shakespeare again appeared at Epworth Old Rectory with the Handlebards' performance of Romeo and Juliet. Part of the Old Rectory's role is to be of service to the community and this performance certainly did that. The audience came from all sections of our community, from 5 year old India up to audience members in their 8th decade. They enjoyed their picnic in the grounds for an hour of more prior to the performance, ably entertained by a talented local amateur musician with a mix of folk and easily listening music, who sang again during the half way interval. His music was enjoyed by all, if the singing along, swaying and clapping had anything to do with it.

Handlebards consisted of a group of four lovely, talented young actresses who kept the audience involved and enthralled with their performance, with each one taking on multiple roles within the play, including a song and dance number at the very end, which, although surprising on the night, was often an integral, part of the entertainment in Elizabethan England when these fabulous plays were first written and performed.

The Rectory gardens rang with laughter during the comedy elements and quiet contemplation during the tragic parts, but no matter what was happening and where in the play I looked at the audience I saw genuine enjoyment all around, even when a member of the audience was roped in to play a dead Juliet, as the actress herself pointed out, "I can't do it, I have to be someone else!" A thoroughly enjoyable evening all round. Our thanks to Handlebards for their spirited performance, but also to all the staff and volunteers, and you know who you are, who made it such a marvellous evening.

After a glorious summer several members of the Epworth and District Flower Club assembled to watch Jo Smith, an area demonstrator, entertain with an evening entitled “My World of Inspiration”. Jo was welcomed back by Carolyn Drury.

It was commented that the four years since Jo had previously visited had gone very rapidly.

Jo began by explaining that her title had developed from her eclectic mix of “items” suitable for creating arrangements around and produced a small chair for the base of her first arrangement. She also introduced to many of the group, brown Oasis which has been developed to degrade by 52% in the first year, an incomparable development on the original Oasis. Using the chair as a support Jo arranged foliage which included rhuscus (a favourite we were to discover), peony and eucalyptus, Jo continued by inserting lilac coloured pompom dahlias, with their foliage and pale pink snowberries which made quite an impact.

The second arrangement was entitled The Shard and Jo’s commentary was about her visit with her mother to The Shard in London. This time her arrangement was created using two triangular structures.

Her foliage this time included cordyline, sinecio and large aspidistra leaves which she curled back onto themselves. Her flowers were white agapanthus and large red roses.

A tall piece of driftwood formed the basis for the third arrangement and Jo told her audience how she enjoyed walking along the beach at Cleethorpes when it was not too busy. The foliage to begin was large Fatsia leaves and bergenia, eucalyptus, hearts tongue fern and hosta. To extend upwards Jo added autumn shaded flowers. These were red hot pokers, crocosmia, fire ferns, autumn grasses which looked like furry caterpillars and orange zinnia.

A long trough was next produced and Jo proceeded to tell us of her venture into the man’s world of allotments.

Finally Jo talked about her entry for the National Nafas competition. She told us how she had always wanted to create a “dress” design and for this event she had the opportunity. She recreated her entry, which was titled Masquerade, using more rhuscus and long flowing ferns, palm leaves and other foliage before adding long sprigs of molucella (Bells of Ireland). On completion Jo placed a wire dummy of the upper body attached to which was a mask and then she placed her arrangement to appear as the skirt. It was beautiful and very dramatic.

Jo was then thanked by Carolyn for her interesting and enjoyable demonstration before all of the displays were raffled off and 7 lucky people would be able to enjoy the wonderful arrangements for longer.
