St Andrew's Church- Saturday 28th and Sunday 29th September the church will be the venue for a local wedding Exhibition. Saturday the event will be from 10am until 4 pm whilst Sunday will be from 2 pm to 4 pm. A quartet of extremely professional musicians will be appearing at Epworth’s Thurlow Pavilion in October called the Burden of Paradise - they will be bringing breathtaking skills, warm co-operation and witty anarchic banter.

Their music is a stylish blend of precisely 47 percent, blues, 35 percent folk and 18 percent jazz.

There are no drums - just voice, saxophone and a pulsing engine room of double bass and guitar.

Burden of Paradise will uniquely present interpretations of evocative songs from Dylan to Dowland and are spell-binding.They get their name from the fact they believe we are all in paradise, if only we knew it, and that the burden is to accept it.

The line-up consists of vocalist Helen Watson, Mark Creswell on guitar, Dave Bowie junior on double bass and Snake Davis on saxophone.

The will be appearing at the Thurlow Pavilion - a registered charity - on Saturday, October 5, with the doors opening at 7.15pm and the entertainment commencing 45 minutes later.

Tickets for the event are now on sale and they are available from the high-fashion shop Serendipity on Epworth’s High Street or by telephoning (01427) 872491. They cost £10 each and anyone attending is asked to bring their own drinks and nibbles.

The event is brought to Epworth through Livelincs, a rural touring programme of theatre, dance and music. It is funded by Arts Council England and North Lincolnshire Council. Livelincs brings high quality events to rural areas. All profits from the evening will go to the charitable Thurlow Playing Field.

Haxey Amateur Dramatic Society is busy with rehearsals for its Autumn Production. This year, two oneact plays are to be staged. The first, “None The Wiser” by Anthony Booth, is set in a convent, with the strangest group of nuns you could ever come across. The second, “Ask A Silly Question” by Richard Tydeman, sees a Parent Teacher Association asking some very silly questions and receiving even sillier answers ! Audiences will enjoy seeing old familiar faces and two new ones, expertly directed by Mary Lenanton.

The production takes place from Wednesday 30th October to Saturday 2nd November in Haxey Memorial Hall at 7.30 p.m. and tickets are available in the Hood Room at Haxey Memorial Hall on Monday 14th October from 10.00 a.m. till 12 noon and thereafter at Greenhill Stores, Haxey from 9.00 – 5.00 daily. Amateur Dramatics The Epworth Mowbray Players No.16 by Anthony Catherall

“Candied Peel” a play by Falkland L. Carey, a drama of big business and murder was the sixteenth production the Epworth Mowbray Players had put on. Mary Housham, relinquished her role of producer and took to the stage once more as Mrs Corntonhart.

David F. Rowe, another schoolteacher who had last performed in ‘Queen Elizabeth Slept Here’ had a double success in the dual role both as the producer and playing the part of a fake man from Scotland Yard.

The local press – SH, hailed it as the best of the last half dozen they had previewed.

Gordon Fletcher was one of the surprises whose extreme capability as the Candied Peel addict. “He has come a long way” they stated, giving a representation of a business tycoon who sets about finding out who poisoned him, giving the role conviction and authority. Whilst Mary was giving the wit of the play its astringence, in the wise-crack department was the responsibility of Brian Taylor, as the young inventor brought into the story to add another character with motive for the attempted poisoning. Both Trimingham’s as usual were most adept and light comedienne Ella Dempster once more shone with her farcical spinster role. The three women with a more germane incidence, Patricia Wilson, as the Big Man’s secretary, Marie Coggan, as his ward, and Pat Rowe, as the partners wife were all sound, Mrs Wilson particularly so; we must add to this list the two newcomers, Angela Robinson, who performed unobtrusively but quite nicely as the maid, and Eric Carpenter who handled the part of the doctor in a manner that suggested he had a future on the amateur stage.

Personally, I like the design of the programme cover that made ones eyes dart all over the page. Credit must go as always to the printers Barnes & Breeze for all the programmes they had printed over the years.

Now & Then - Then & Now No. 54 Anthony Catherall This month and every month see Epworth &this month Santoft in Bygone days and compare to today's images!

The Reindeer Public house at Santoft, is the backdrop for two new Fordson tractors supplied by Sun Engineering at Crowle and retailed by Stanley Richardson's showroom that stood opposite in the 1930's. The pubs history goes back many centuries primarily used as a farmers pub. In the 1850's Dinah Axe was the landlady. More recently last century, the Reindeer was run by Harry Hudson when the above photograph was taken. During WW2, the Wilsons were landlords where they welcomed the crème-de-la crème of the Royal Air Force. Other later landlords included, Daisy Hodgson and her husband, The Lees family, Bill Kelly. In the 1960's the roof of the pub was adorned with the sign 'Oakwell Ales Sold Here'. Joseph Kingham made it a free house and sold it on to Bill McLain for £34,000 in March 1975. All change now in 2013. A complete renovation and addition of the Fawn Restaurant and function suite will no doubt see many new visitors to the Hamlet of Santoft, now a pub for everyone.

Naughty Ladies was the intriguing title of the demonstration given by Val Dukes from Derbyshire to the Epworth and District Flower Club when they met in Haxey for their September meeting. She was introduced and welcomed by Carolyn Drury, the programme secretary. Val first told her audience that the first lady she would illustrate was born in 69 AD and everyone guessed Cleopatra. Val used phormium and ferns, strelitzia and sunflowers, hosta and gerbera and blue iris to represent the River Nile. She commentated about the lady herself giving us a brief and entertaining history as she worked. She completed her stunning display with the addition of a doll dressed as Cleopatra.

The second arrangement represented a lady born in 1526. She was Bess of Hardwick and Val continued in the same vein giving amusing anecdotes and some facts about her subject. Val created a beautiful tapestry using rich dark colours giving a Tudor effect. In the arrangement were trailing ivy, fuchsia, crab apples, dark plum coloured carnations, begonia leaves and very dark dahlia. An addition to introduce a little lightness was an amount of gold sprayed cotoneaster. As with Cleopatra, a doll dressed beautifully completed the display.

Two oranges gave away the identity of the “naughty lady” born in 1650. Val used quite an amount of copper beech leaves and to create a contrast she inserted very pretty orange and lemon carnations, beautiful bunches of orange berries, tarnished gold chrysanthemums, small roses in bud and lilies before finally inserting the two oranges. A model representing Nell Gwynne completed the arrangement.

In 1721 Madame Pompadour was born and we were entertained and enlightened about her life. This time Val used trailing ivy and senecio from an urn. For some upright effect she inserted “lambs ears”. She talked of a freeflowing background which she created using ferns and beautiful passion flowers. Stephanotis, pink roses, alstroemeria, pineapple plant and very pale green chrysanthemums were inserted before the final touch with orchids completed the arrangement.

The French lady from Martinique, born in 1761 was the penultimate character of the evening. To represent Josephine Val used dark red roses and vertical greenery. She achieved a striking arrangement with the addition of golden gerbera and then inserted hosta leaves, euphorbia, varigated ivy and skimmia. Val told us of the fate of Josephine before placing her doll beside the very different arrangement.

1853 saw the birth of the final model for the evening. Lily Langtry was born in Jersey and as we learned of her life Val inserted white lilies, pale green chrysanthemums and roses into the arrangement which she created on top of two tall mirrored hexagonal columns. The effect again was quite spectacular. Val was able to donate this last arrangement as two raffle prizes.

The audience agreed that they had been treated to an interesting and informative evening with a slightly different format. Seven members were able to take home raffle prizes of wonderful flower arrangements and one lucky person won the remaining flowers.

Members were informed of the requirements for the next meeting, a workshop with Toni Gravel. The meeting will be on Monday, 14th October at 7.30pm in the Stephen Jones Community Hall. Further details are available from members.

The November meeting on Monday 11th is the group’s big social event and members were asked to distribute invitations. Entry at the door of the Haxey Memorial Hall will be £8. The demonstrator will be Janet Hayton, a NAFAS National Demonstrator and the evening will include refreshments

THE ISLE OF AXHOLME HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY ANNUAL SHOW 2013 The Isle of Axholme Horticultural Society held its 23 rd

Annual Show in the Imperial Hall, Epworth on Saturday 31 August 2013.

From 8am onwards it was a hive of industry in all four sections of the show of 79 classes.

The Vegetables and Fruit Section was judged by Bob Herbert of Sheffield who commented on the quality of produce this year and his Best Exhibit was Apples shown by Mr G Fiddler.

The Flowers and Floral Art Section was judged by David Willowby of Rotherham who chose a lovely white orchid shown by Chris Knight of Owston Ferry as his Best Exhibit.

Cookery was judged by Joanna Phillips of Misson who said the quality of the entries was very high and chose as the Best Exhibit a Dundee cake made by Ilene Pearson of Haxey.

The Painting, Craft and Needlework Judge was Elizabeth Rowe of Misson who said “A very high standard of work in all 10 classes” and chose an embroidered picture, worked in wool, as her Best Exhibit made by Mrs F Hincliffe. Her final comment on the show itself was “What village life and craft is about”.

The Children’s Section (Age 11 and under) lacked entries, but Lucy Brannen and Holly Hadfield each took home chocolate and a cup.

After presentation of cups and awards, the auction of donated items took place by John Brown of Hatfield Woodhouse. There was much lively bidding and good humour.

There no unclaimed raffle prizes This was the end of a very successful show.

FESTIVAL OF THE PLOUGH 2013 They came in their thousands to see two outside events that proved to be the stars of the show, humans pitting their strength against each other Despite the threatened heavy rain forecast for our region the festival attracted many new visitors from all over the region on Sunday 15 September 2013, at High Burnham Farm near Epworth courtesy of Simon & Lynne Clark.

(President Harold Woolgar stated “the BBC weather forecasters were wrong yet again, possibly deterring many more visitors”) However, the day overall was mostly dry but windy with a few showers.

Anthony Catherall, Press Secretary said, “ I had a feeling of excitement when I saw the flat car-park at 11.00 am, it was filling rapidly, we thank the public, the traders, exhibitors, all service providers in the main and of course the organisers all arriving on time to make the show highly enjoyable for all who attended.

Unfortunately, because of forecasts of projected high winds or soft ground some attractions were withdrawn these included; Steam traction engines – Threshing machine. The Gallopers and swings were cancelled by the operator due to projected high winds. These circumstances were beyond our control”.

Two outside events in particular, both with low cost implications, grabbed the public’s imagination to both try and watch. Starting first the Brick Lifting competition and later the Tug’O’War, both events, being new to the festival this year.

The Brick lifting competition being almost cost free to organise, saw fierce competiveness both in the ladies and men’s section. All day long people flocked to the stall to pit their strength with onlookers watching in awe. Even the local constabulary tried their hand, with Epworth P.C. Teresa Fisher-Hagggar, reaching the top three in the ladies lift.

But there were two real stars of the event, Matt Barlow of Epworth a young tall strong muscled man who won the men’s lift achieving 19 bricks, and Beckie Matt Barlow Lovell-Kelly of Crowle.

In the ladies lift off final, between Louisa Severn of Belton and Beckie LovellKelly of Crowle, the girls had men including me looking on in amazement at their physical strength , as they fought it out. Most men on the day couldn’t lift the 15 bricks that pretty, petite Beckie achieved.

Both finalists received £25.00 each for their enBeckie Lovell-Kelly deavours.

Young Farmers

The Tug’O’War, organised by the local Young Farmers, was in the early afternoon hilarious fun and extremely entertaining to watch as hundreds did. With a little help here and there, the extended ladies team eventually saw of the men proving hugely popular with the crowd.

A grand sight for all was 80 year old John Smith, driving his 1917 ‘Overtime’ tractor ploughing in the Third- field, (I’ve never seen a tractor like it). Lower down the field, about a half mile away from the show field one could see tractors of all ages, sizes and design trundling along, to the very clear back-drop of West Burton power station towers 13 miles away, at Gainsborough.

The nine marquees were full all day, providing respite from the rare southern winds that proved a little trying for all but the hardy. Nevertheless the entertainment inside was of the highest order for both children and adults alike.

Crowle & Thorne Moors Peat Railway Society Thorne and Hatfield Moors form the largest area of lowland peat bog in the UK. They are located on the boundary between South Yorkshire and North Lincolnshire.

Peat has been extracted from the moors since medieval times, however it was not until the late 19th century that peat extraction on a large scale commenced. The peat at this time was mainly used for animal bedding, or litter. Indeed, one of the peat works had contracts with omnibus companies including London, Paris and the Midland Railway. The peat was originally cut, or graved, by hand before being transported for processing at a number of peat works around the moors. Transport methods included horse drawn tramways and by flat bottomed barge in specially constructed canals.

As horse transport began to be replaced by the internal combustion engine so the demand for animal litter declined, however there was a growth in the demand of peat for horticultural uses and peat extraction continued with processing focused on fewer peat works. It was not until the late 1940's when the first locomotives started to replace horses for transport when an Austin Swallow car was converted for use on the 3ft gauge track. Quite quickly horses were replaced by locomotives to transport peat on the moors. Some 23 locomotives, including Lister, Ruston, Motor Rail, Hunslet and Schoma, had been used on the moors by the time peat extraction ceased in 2002. The Government bought-out the extraction rights from Scotts, to form the Humberhead National Nature Reserve - an area internationally recognised for its ecological importance.

Crowle & Thorne Moors Peat Railway Society has been formed to promote the heritage and history of the peat railways on Crowle & Thorne Moors. The initial intention is to restore a Simplex loco that used to work on the moors. The loco and the moors themselves are the property of Natural England with whom the society are currently in initial discussions. The society is fortunate that the loco is adjacent to a former maintenance shed that we intend to refurbish for use as a workshop. Initially it is intended to lay a short length of running track, however because of the environmentally sensitive nature of the moors it is essential that any developments are acceptable to Natural England.

It is hoped that the the restoration and locomotive itself can provide a useful focus for educational activities - not just looking at the history and heritage of peat extraction on the moors but also in providing engineering projects for local schools and colleges.

"Up the High Street" is the title of the current exhibition in Scunthorpe Museum. The Epworth W. I. audience in the Imperial Hall enjoyed a very well thought through, illustrated talk on the exhibition by Jennifer Dunne, the Collections Assistant for Social History. Jennifer told us about preparations for exhibitions, about the constraints of space, budget and artefacts. She told us how the staff had researched for the current exhibition and of particular interest were the photographs with which she illustrated her presentation. As "Up the High Street" focuses on six local towns including Scunthorpe many members were able to identify places and people from the immediate locality. Jennifer's enthusiasm and knowledge were obvious and many members felt they should visit while it remains on display (until January next year).

Two visitors were welcomed before there was some business conducted informing members of forthcoming activities in the area and the topic for the October meeting. We shall welcome again the Leeder Brothers who entertain with puzzling items causing all to wrack their brains and be entertained at the same time. The November meeting will be a Christmas Crafts evening. The visitors were fortunate enough to win a raffle prize each before the evening ended.

Maybe you feel tempted to visit and maybe join us. We meet at 7.30pm. in the Imperial Hall (small room) on the second Tuesday of each month - 8th October - next month. Further details can be gained from Gill on 01427872405.

‘Scarecrows’ at West Butterwick School Class 2 have been researching and then designing and making scarecrows to enter the ‘Festival of the Plough’ competition.

What you are about to read is about scarecrows. Did you know scarecrows are 3,000 years old - the Egyptians used them? They’re 1,000 years older then Christ!

We have scarecrows to scare away birds that wouldn’t take a second thought to eat our crops… farmers need their crops to live so it’s very important for farmers. Just thinking how would you scare birds? Scarecrows look like people, they even wear clothes and hats (mostly straw hats).

Scarecrows come from all over the world - even Africa, Poland, China and Japan.

Names for scarecrows Hodmiod in Berkshire; Guardian of the crops; hay man ; Bwdach in Wales, Tattie bogel in Ireland and Scotland.

Did you know in medieval times people thought scarecrows had special powers, but why? Although the new ones make noises and move or look like hawks, they don’t have powers.

I found it very interesting and enjoyed finding out about scarecrows.

Isle Dance for Health The Autumn 2013 programme of folk dances in the Isle of Axholme under Isle Dance for Health is coming to Epworth and Crowle in November.

The three dances in Westwoodside and the first two of the dances in Epworth have attracted large and rapturous audiences and were deemed to be a great success. Everyone really liked the live music played by local folk dance band, Lys St Georges, as well as the teaching and the selection of folk dances.

The dances are geared towards those over the age of 40 and have been funded by North Lincolnshire NHS (under its Community Public Health Improvement Programme).

You don’t need a partner nor any experience in Country Dancing and the dances will be suitable for all levels of fitness. No previous experience is needed as expert tuition is on hand.

WHAT DID YOU DO IN THE WAR DADDY? The history books tell me, and those of you much older than I also, that this was an advertisement in the Second World War designed to encourage men to enlist the armed forces, by reflecting that they might not have anything noble or patriotic to tell their children. Personally I recall asking my father on many occasions that question “What did you do in the war Daddy?” Then listening to stories and seeing pictures of wrecked aircraft, bomb craters, and desert landscapes. I’m sure these accounts were censored for a young boy, but the faraway places of The Sudan, Eritrea, and Ethiopia were fascinating.

It is though only a part of the story—and I was equally fascinated to know what my Dad did in the peace before the war, what it was that made turn away from his job as a car mechanic, enlist, leave home and opt for life in the RAF. For most of us today we do not have an experience of our country being at war, and for the most (but not all) it is not therefore a relevant question. So perhaps we turn to the reverse question “What did you do in the peace Daddy and Mummy? At a time such as now with uncertainty in the middle East what is it we are doing, to keep peace.

I do not pretend there are any easy answers, there never are, but my own children have asked me of the Falklands War “What did you think about it Dad?” The answer is not always comforting.

What better place to start than to think about the fruit that your tree or trees -has produced. Now is the right time to be finishing off the picking of your apples and pears before the first frosts come. You will want to use some of your fruit now – perhaps for eating, or preserving, or make into juice – as well as putting some into store so that you have fruit available through the winter.

Different trees produce ripe fruit at different times. One of the earliest apples in the shops is Discovery.

This lovely apple is best eaten when the flesh of the fruit starts to go pink. Trees with a similar habit are Katy, Worcester Pearmain and Devonshire Quarandon. The latter grows in my garden and its fruit ripens towards the end of August – although this year all fruit seems about a week or two behind the normal timetable as a result of the cold wet spring. With these early apples there is to point in putting many of them into store. They are laden with juice and do not keep well. They are best eaten fresh, but also make fantastic apple juice and cider.

Throughout September and October the fruit of other apple and pear trees starts to mature. I have a large Bramley apple in my garden and I try to pick its fruit during the middle to end of October. Such apples will store through the winter so long as they are not damaged by bruising, codling moth or anything else.

You will know when an apple is ready to pick as when you hold it in your hand – when it is still attached to the tree by its stalk – it will easily come away from the tree. If you have to tug at the apple to release it from the tree it is probably not yet ripe. Another way of telling whether an apple is right is to cut it open.

The pips of a ripe apple are brown. When the tree is not yet ripe its pips are white.

I have tried a number of ways to store apples. The best way I have found is to use some large cardboard trays – you can normally get these for free from local shops – and lay the undamaged fruit out in them.

Cover them with a sheet of newspaper and put the tray somewhere cool and dark. A garage might be suitable or an outside shed. Most houses are too warm to store apples since the central heating dries and shrivels the fruit. Keep an eye out for mice which are partial to a nice apple. Inspect the fruit in the trays every week or so and discard any that start to rot.

TRENTSIDE FEDERATION SCHOOL NEWS Following our Summer Break we have returned refreshed for the new academic year. We welcome Mrs Francis to the teaching team at St Martin’s.

There are plenty of interesting learning experiences unfolding at both schools since the start of the Autumn Term. West Butterwick has been studying the history of the scarecrow, working on some imaginative entries for this year’s Festival of the Plough’s Scarecrow competition. I am pleased to report that Class 2’s ‘Harry Spotter’ won the Key Stage 2 category. (shown on front cover) The ‘school-grown’ vegetables at West Butterwick have almost all been harvested now, resulting in a delicious ‘home grown’ pumpkin pie, kindly baked by one of our parents. The carrots were a great success and all children had the opportunity to take a bunch home with them. Soup-making is now on the timetable using even more of our own veg – leeks and carrots.

The Junior pupils at St Martin’s have started on their ‘World War II’ topic, looking at the Blitz and the lives/experiences of child evacuees, as well as sequencing key events in WW2 such as the D-Day Landings. They will be designing and making gas masks, periscopes and air raid shelters.

A number of children in Key Stage 2 have been selected as ‘Playground Leaders’, who will be involved in helping with playground games and activities at break-times. Some of the pupils in Key Stage 1 are involved in the planning of an Alien Party for the rest of their ‘earthling colleagues’ in class 2, looking at the maths (costings) as well as creating menus (weighing and measuring). The menu will feature cakes, biscuits, pizza and jelly. Apparently, the party will be ‘out of this world’!

This fits in well with the class’ Science topic of ‘The Earth and Beyond’.

Years 1 and 2 pupils at St Martin’s are to enjoy an educational visit to the RSPB Reserve at Beckingham Marshes, shortly. They will research and study local wildlife.

Both schools in our Federation will continue to receive specialist music tuition. We look forward to hearing some of the wonderful trumpet and recorder playing in our church services and special assemblies! Pupils also continue to learn French from Infants right through to Year 6. They are doing very well in connection with this. Bon effort!

At this time of year, we are also busy planning our Harvest Festival Services. A number of the West Butterwick pupils are involved in the newly introduced Family Services at St Mary’s Church too. The dates for these are 22 nd September, 27th October and 24th November.

We look forward to a productive and interesting term!

DRINK-DRIVERS FACE TOUGHER RULES Dear readers, Drink-drive rules involving the most serious offenders are to be tightened up. Under new regulations the most dangerous offenders will have to prove they are no longer dependent on alcohol before they are allowed to get back behind the wheel.

The new measures will also see those drink-drivers who obstruct the police by refusing to allow their blood samples to be analysed being treated the same as other high risk offenders.

Currently, all high risk offenders must pass a medical examination before they can be issued with a driving licence following their disqualification. However, drivers can start driving as soon as they have applied for their licence and before they have taken and passed the necessary medical.

But from June 1 the most dangerous drink-drivers will have to pass a medical confirming they are no longer alcohol dependent at the end of their disqualification and BEFORE they start driving.

Also, those offenders who refuse to allow their blood samples to be analysed will also, from June 1, only get their licence back following disqualification if they pass the required medical.

Under the High Risk Offender (HRO) scheme, drivers convicted of certain serious drink/driving offences must have a medical investigation to confirm that there are no on-going problems with the misuse of alcohol before they can be issued with a licence. The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA is notified of such offenders by the courts. Last year the DVLA was notified by the courts of just over 50,000 drink-driving convictions.

Nearly 22,000 of those were classed as high risk offenders. Of those, around 5,000 drivers either failed, or failed to attend, their medical.

Road Safety Minister Stephen Hammond said: "Drink -drivers are a menace and it is right that we do everything we can to keep the most high risk offenders off the road."
