A night of musical madness is on the cards when The London Philharmonic Skiffle Orchestra appears at Epworth’s Thurlow Pavilion later this month.

A bit of a give-away is a couple of the names of a couple of the four-strong group – as they include The Right Horrible Ronald Regan on vocals, double bass, sousaphone, trumpet, bagpipes and pig and Captain Cabbage on vocals, washboard, suitcases, percussion, trumpet, saw, accordion, harmonica, dog, chicken and snake.

This latest evening of entertainment at the Thurlow Pavilion takes place on Friday, October 7, at 8.00pm and is again a LiveLincs production bringing high quality events to rural areas.

The London Philharmonic Skiffle Orchestra performs high energy, colourful, Celtic, Cajun, Klezmer, Cossack, Country, Blues and comedy numbers and it also includes Mike Martin on vocals, guitar, banjo, harmonica, ukulele and horse as well as Martyn Oram on vocals, guitar, fiddle, mandolin, phono-fiddle and frog.

All proceeds from the night go to the Thurlow Playing Field, which is a registered charity. Tickets cost £7 and are available from Serendipity on Epworth‘s High Street. Telephone (01427) 874478 or 872491. Those attending are advised to bring their own nibbles and drinks.

A new attraction has been added to the highly popular North Lincolnshire tourist attraction the Old Rectory in Epworth.

It is an authentically reproduced costume of a style that was worn by women in the early 18th century, when the Old Rectory was the home of the Wesley family. The dress is of a style likely to have been worn by their mother Susanna, who had no less than 19 children, and was hand-stitched by Cheryl Crick, who was a volunteer at the Old Rectory as well as its gardener. (Photo front cover) ―I got the pattern from a book called ‗The Cut of Women‘s Clothing 1600 to 1900‘, explained Cheryl.‖It‘s mainly wool with cotton lace and it took me about a month to make,‖ she added.

The dress itself is worn over a hooped petticoat and incorporates lace at the neck and sleeves – the neck frill being called at the time a ‗tucker‘ and those at the sleeves were referred to as ‗ruffles‘ or ‗engagements‘.

Cheryl who has now moved to Beacon Park in Pickering, North Yorkshire, has her dress on display in what is called the Period Room at the Old Rectory.

Women’s Institute (WI) Report Hi all, the report is back in action. The September meeting was held on the 13th in the Red Lion where Jenny from Gunthorpe read us a selection of her poems, stories and anecdotes, which had a wide range of subject matter. An enjoyable evening was had by all, with many laughs, a few groans, and lots of reminiscences.

The hedgehogs and dishes made at a previous meeting were handed out to sometimes reluctant owners to the tune of even more laughter. A pleasant evening all in all.

Sadly we had to hand the Society Cup back after this year‘s Epworth Show as we didn‘t win it again.

However we did have some successes, with yours truly achieving second in the cup with a solo effort, the group as a whole achieving 3rd and 4th in the cup, and one member getting 2nd in the knitted garment section, and another achieving a creditable 3rd with her scones. Well done to all the ladies taking part.

A new venture has begun within the WI – a craft group has been inaugurated. This group is meeting on the 4th Tuesday in the month and will work on any number of crafts, and hopefully we will all experience and learn new skills. Anyone outside the WI is also invited to attend and join is with us if they so wish. Contact me on the number below for more information on this if interested.

The next meeting will be held on the 11th October in the Red Lion at 7-45pm. Hope to see you there.

All Saints Church festival organisers were thrilled with the number of people, (almost a 1000) who supported the festival. It was an amazing weekend with great excitement and enormous interest generated by the original Temple Belwood Sale documents from 1897. Many visitors also spent time poring over the registers to trace their ancestors and wondered over our earliest dated manuscript, 1542, which gives an impression of life at that time.

The exhibition opened on Friday with a class from our Primary school who came to see, hear and have a go at the Victorian toys, lace making, broomstick crocheting, brass rubbing and Victorian music and dance. The children danced the polka down the aisle, heard the story of the stained glass window and had a short lesson with the radio enthusiasts, who on 9/11 managed to contact Ground Zero in New York.

Other people came to see the flowers which were extremely well displayed and presented by local arrangers, following the theme of The Victorians.

Victorian song writers were celebrated in the Songs of Praise service on Sunday morning, The exhibition visitors were also able to enjoy lunches and teas provided by church members and many returned to church for a second look round.

AXHOLME CENTRAL POLICE REPORT Carrside Sport Facilities, Carrside, Epworth – Criminal Damage, including Arson, Anti-social behaviour, youths causing annoyance and cars congregating the car parking area.

The facilities at Carrside are used by over a 100 young people of various ages, and includes the Epworth Colts PC Constable 1169 Police Constable 1839 Police Community Sally Jameson Tina Starbuck Support Officer football teams. It is ideally situated and easily accessible with 7577 car parking off the main road but this locality also suits those Stewart Pearson with the intention of causing disruption to the facilities at the site. In recent times the site has suffered from cars congregating during the hours of darkness causing anti-social behaviour, arson attacks on the changing room facilities, burglary and criminal damage to facilities within the changing rooms, Litter and debris is left lying about. These type of offences then cause unnecessary inconvenience to those law abiding people who value the site and the opportunity to play sport. The building is currently having a major improvement which both the police and those involved in using the facilities do not wish it to have any further disruption caused. The crimes that have been committed in the past cannot be allowed to continue and the Neighbourhood team together with the fundraisers, those involved in the renovations and those who use the site will work together to seek that the negative actions of a few individuals ceases and allows those using the site to enjoy their sporting activities.

Anyone with information about those individuals who visit the site without good reason and who go on to commit crime and anti-social behaviour, the Neighbourhood team would like to know. Anyone coming to police attention will be dealt with positively.

Stepping Stones Nursery, Epworth – Anti-social behaviour, youths causing annoyance and criminal damage.

Reports are being received that the building is being frequented by youths and there has already been some damage caused. The building is in a quiet area and thus is attractive to youths congregating. These premises are adjoining to the car park, church, and play area and as such make it a particularly favourable. Neighbourhood staff and incident response officers will be making patrols in the area and any youths found on these private premises will be dealt with accordingly.

UPDATE;- Neighbourhood staff have regularly patrolled the area and have engaged with a lot of the young people who frequent the car park area who on the whole have been well behaved and respectful. There has been reports that some youths have been favouring Sunday evenings when there are people practising bell ringing in the church.

This is not acceptable and any information regarding those responsible should be forwarded to the Neighbourhood team. Those individuals who are involved should cease this type of behaviour before being caught as they will be dealt with.

Recent Issues Drink Driver arrested and charged = A male was stopped by police due to his suspicious manoeuvres in his vehicles. His behaviour towards officers made them think he had been drinking. He failed a roadside breath test and was found to be twice over the legal limit. He was charged and bailed to appear at court. The Isle of Axholme

AGRICULTURE IN THE 19th CENTURY Farming has long been the most important single activity in the Isle of Axholme. In the 16 th century the ordinary farmer had 10 cattle, 6 horses, 4 pigs and perhaps 20 sheep. In the 17 th century a substantial yeoman farmed about 25 acres with a „middling‟ peasant having about 7 acres and a poor peasant between 2 and 5 acres. All had common grazing right. The main crops of the 17th century farmer were pulses, barley, wheat, rye, oats, hemp and flax. The holding remained small and indeed many are still small. In the 19th century the Isle had the largest number of smallholdings of any area of Lincolnshire.

The Enclosure Act of 1795 did little to increase the size of smallholdings because it only referred to the commons, not arable land.

Under the Mediaeval system of agriculture, the people paid rents and tithes to the Lord of the manor for their land. The land was divided into small strips (approximately 16 ft. wide 4.92 metres) from three large village fields. The commons were extensive and used by any of the villagers who wished. The commons of Haxey, Epworth and Belton were low-lying lands west of the villages. They were valued at around 10/- or 11/- an acre before enclosure.

In 1795 an Act of Enclosure for the commons of Owston Ferry, Haxey, Epworth and Belton was passed – altogether 12,000 acres. £20,000 was allocated for drainage. Compensation was made for tithes and allotments for Turbaries were taken out. Seven twelfths were divided between owners of “ancient messuages cottagers, tofts and toft steads” in equal shares, and five twelfths were divided between the same owners in proportion to the value of the lands. In Epworth there were 236 claims for 2,285 acres.

The inhabitants resisted an attempt to enclose the arable lands. Thus, of course remnants of the strip fields can still be seen, but as increasing mechanisation on the farm makes them inefficient, voluntary unification over the last 50 years has made them fast disappear. The most obvious remnants of the strip field system can be seen on Eastlound fields between Haxey and Eastlound, south of Burnham and just east of Epworth on the Owston Ferry and Beltoft Roads.

With the Act were appointed Commissioners to organise the division of land. Their powers included supervision of drains and ditches and enforcement of drainage rates including the hiring of a drainage engineer; these powers were retained until 1930 with the Land Drainage Act. Minutes of the meetings from 1795 t0 1930 can be seen in records at the South West Axholme Drainage Board Offices in Epworth.

Agricultural wages were fairly high. Labour was in demand especially at harvest time.

Irishmen in gangs came to help gather the harvest working north up the country as the harvest ripened.

Women and children were recruited into Potato Pickers gangs to help at harvest time. Originally the idea to employ women and children was to provide work so they could supplement their husband‟s earnings. However, the exploitation of the gangs of women and children working for up to sixteen hours a day was not forseen.

However, 1867 legislation all but abolished the system. Wages in 1793 were around 12/- a day in harvest time, but only 3/- a day in Please mention “The Arrow” when responding to advertisements usual18 season.

CHANGING ROOMS To most men a changing room is a macho location where the restrictive clothes of daily life are exchanged for sports kit, which is always designed to give maximum freedom for movement, as well as some (often very ) limited protection. My memories of draughty changing rooms are of strong smells of liniment and embrocation, the sound of a collection of excuses as to why that particular day will not see the player at their best, followed by cold showers.

To a lesser degree, but perhaps primarily for ladies, a changing room is a small cubicle to discard the old clothes and try on some new garment. Is it the right colour? Is it the right size? Does it fit?

Then out of the changing room a new person appears –even if only for a few minutes till the coat or dress is taken off and bought, The sales transaction is completed.

There are many images of church, among them hospital, light house, power station, but also a changing room. The concept that we go in and then come out as different people—changed and transformed, How I wish this was more often the case!

Around us the whole world is a changing room as one season turns into another, and the harvest of the old year gives way top the sowing of another.

Whether In the world or in our own lives though, whatever, we are all in the changing room together.

Emergency Services Rescue Day Saturday 9th July 2011.

I am writing to express my sincere thanks on behalf of the Rescue Day Committee to the members of the public and communities who came along to Rescue Day and or donated money for the charities that this years Rescue Day was raising both awareness and funds for.

In addition our thanks to all in making Rescue Day the outstanding success it was. Feed back we have received to date has been extremely positive from all involved and those who attended, moreover, both exhibitors and members of the public have stated that they had a most informative and enjoyable day.

The main objectives for Rescue Day continues to be to raise safety awareness to members of the public by providing displays such as Water Rescue demonstrations and Road Traffic Collision exercises, along with the delivery of community safety from the Emergency Services, volunteer rescue organisations and safety partnerships.

The day was also able to raise funds for various charities and worthy causes which, given the current economical climate is testament to the public‘s generosity and support to the Emergency Services and the charities concerned.

In addition to the money raised for Help for Heroes by the Help for Heroes team who were present on the day a further £3813:69 was raised by other charities that were also present at Rescue Day. Now all expenses have been paid £15,102:62 has been added to the £3813:69 making a grand total of £18916:31 raised at this years Rescue Day for charities. The Rescue Day committee has unanimously agreed to divide the £15,102:62 as follows: Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire Air Ambulance = £4,600, this is what it costs to keep the Air Ambulance flying for just one day.

RAFA = £1000, this goes towards members of the RAF past and present who suffer injuries or illness throughout out the course of their duties.

Humber Rescue = £3,200, this is to complete their new boat house extension which will reduce their boat mobilisation by 5 minutes.

Belwood Playgroup = £500, this will go towards the purchase of trikes, helmets and Hi visibility tabards for the children.

Doncaster Sub Aqua Club = £1000, this will enable the club to purchase children‘s SCUBA equipment to enable them to teach and provide try dives for children.

Burton Stather Heritage Group = £500, this will go towards their World War 2 Tank ramp restoration project.

Market Place Crowle, £100, towards the upkeep of their market stalls which were kindly donated the Rescue Day. Crowle and Ealand Playing Field Association = £1000, in order to reduce anti-social behaviour in the market place at Crowle, a skate park is being built, the Rescue Day donation will go towards the insurance for the park and assist in the investment in young people and raise their aspirations.

Firefighters Charity = £1000, towards the two centres which rely solely on charitable donations to help in the convalescence of injured firefighters or those who suffer ill health through the course of their duties.

Police Charity = £1000, towards rehabilitation facilities which rely solely on charitable donations to help in the convalescence of injured Police Officers or those who suffer ill health through the course of their duties.

Lindsey Lodge Hospice = £1000, Lindsey Lodge Hospice offers special care for people in the North Lincolnshire area living with life-limiting conditions such as cancer, multiple sclerosis and motor neurone disease.

FODSA = £202:62, This will go towards their charity of choice and which they are carrying out a Fire Engine pull to raise further funds on the 11th of September.

Given the success of Rescue Day 2011 it is sincerely hoped that you will consider rendering your support with next years Rescue Day which takes place on Saturday, July the 14th 2012, once again please accept our sincere thanks and appreciation on behalf of the Rescue Day Committee for your kind donations to the Rescue Day charities for 2011.

A good number of members of Epworth and District Flower Club welcomed Maggie Wootton from West Butterwick to demonstrate at their first meeting after the Summer break. Maggie, who is the Chairman of Scunthorpe Flower Club, used an assortment of galvanised containers to demonstrate how a ―supermarket bunch‖ could be arranged with ease and perhaps not too much expertise to make interesting displays in the home.

As she chatted through her demonstration she created eight very different designs using flowers such as white and deep purple gladioli, pretty, pink roses, lilies of a similar shade, chrysanthemums and carnations. Maggie used gypsophila and skeleton leaves and various colours of sisal frequently as fillers because of the current shortage of foliage following last year‘s very hard winter.

Different arrangements were created using sunflowers and tiny daisy chrysanthemums in pale green, yellow and white.

Maggie‘s final, quite stunning arrangement, was made using a long galvanised bath into which she put the dark purple gladioli, bamboo, carnations which were a beautiful shade of orange, similar shaded roses, small dark red carnations and dark red sisal to fill the gaps. Jill Towns gave the vote of thanks before the evening concluded in the usual way with a raffle, tea and coffee.

Members then agreed that the Christmas meeting should be a visit to Doddington Hall, near Lincoln on Saturday, 10th December.

The next meeting will be on Monday 11th October in the Stephen Jones Community Hall in Haxey at 7.30pm. and will be a workshop session with Sheila Clark. Participants will need to bring: an oblong dish with lip (13‖x 18‖), 1 block soaked oasis, small amount grey moss or sisal, 10 largish ivy leaves, small quantity of box, 3 skimmia, 2 phormium leaves, 2 pieces of eucalyptus bark, midelino sticks, roses (fresh or silk), 2 fatsia leaves and a bradawl.

Epworth Primary School News letter The new school year has started. All the children are in new classes and 38 children have joined our two Reception classes. They have settled in very well thanks to the very good transition programme we have with the Nursery providers in the area.

All the children look very smart in their uniform and are already working hard. Its going to be another very busy year in school.

Outdoor Learning Area During the first week of term all the children completed some work on the new outdoor learning area we are hoping to develop this year with a grant of £10 000 from Awards for All. This will be based in an interior courtyard. At the moment this is an empty space with paving slabs and weeds and nothing else!

The children were asked for their ideas about what we could put in the area to turn it into an outdoor learning area. Lots of good ideas were given for environmental work including a pond, areas for growing and different habitats to encourage wildlife. Quiet areas were also suggested as well as displays of art work.

Over this term we plan to work with a landscape architect to develop the area and incorporate as many of the children's suggestions as possible.

After School Club Plans are going ahead for an after school club providing quality childcare up to 6pm in term time in the adjacent Children's Centre. We are planning to work in partnership with Secret Garden to provide this facility. Along with our Breakfast Club in school which is now well established, we will be able to provide care from 7:45am to 6:00pm. This will be of real benefit for working families.

Festival of Flowers and Victorian Life Many thanks to those who came to the Festival last month at All Saints Church Belton. Just under 50 individuals prepared the displays and the flowers and acted as stewards or caterers on the day and approximately 1000 people came to visit, some travlling many miles.

We are grateful to you all.

After a short pause, we now move into Harvest, Remembrance Sunday and Christmas. I won‘t scare you by mentioning how few shopping days there are until Christmas Day, although I think most children think it‘s light years to go.

Those children will now be used to new schools or new teachers and even those going to University have packed their bags and gone. They will miss out on most of the major festivals mentioned above although I am sure they will be home to collect Christmas presents.

Now is the time to remember Jesus said, ―It is more blessed to give than to receive‖!

There is one more major celebration to mention. Rt Rev Christopher Lowson will be ‗enthroned‘ as 72 nd Bishop of Lincoln in November. Please pray wit me that God will endow him with gifts of wisdom, leadership and insight. Let‘s hope he finds time to bless the snowploughs this year as did the former Bishop!

Isle Group of the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust Fungi Foray at Langholme Woods Just a reminder that the last outdoor event in 2011 takes place on Saturday October 1st when we are having a fungi foray in Langholme Woods which are near Wesrwoodside. The walk will be led by Ray Halstead who is an expert on identifying fungi, and Langholme Woods has a good variety of fungi for us to find. Do come along and find out more about the incredible variety of fungi which can be found on our doorstep. Anyone is welcome to come you don‘t have to be a member, bring along any friends and family too. We will be meeting at the reserve at 10am. To get to the reserve go along the A161 out of Graizelound towards Misterton, cross the railway line and take the next right turn which is on the sharp bend – Tindale Bank Road. The reserve is down the track on the right, (about ½ mile). It is better to park on the road and walk down the track as there is limited parking at the reserve entrance. It is advisable to have insect spray at this time of year.

British Wildlife by John Gardner The new indoor season starts off with a treat when John Gardner will be giving us an illustrated talk on British Wildlife. This will take place on Thursday October 6th at 7.30pm in Haxey in the Stephen Jones Hall at the rear of the Methodist Chapel on Low Street. John is a professional photographer who is involved with commercial work but has a special interest in wildlife which has been one of the main driving forces in developing his photographic expertise. He has travelled abroad to photograph wildlife but he has concentrated more on the wildlife to be found in the British Isles which features in his talk on the 6 th October.

The Future of Wildlife in Lincolnshire Looking ahead, our November meeting is being given by Paul Learoyd who is the Chief Executive of the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust. Paul will talk about the work of the Trust and give us an update on the state of Wildlife Conservation in Lincolnshire. He will tell us about the way in which opportunities may arise in the future to allow the Trust to continue to make a difference for wildlife in the County. This will take place on Thursday November 3rd.

All our indoor meetings are held in the Stephen Jones Hall at the rear of the Methodist Chapel, Low Street, Haxey on the first Thursday of the month and everyone is welcome.

SOUTH AXHOLME SHARKS got their new season off to a blistering start last Sunday (28th) when they competed at the Worksop Dolphins Dukeries meet at Ponds Forge in Sheffield.

22 swimmers represented the Isle club and certainly made the big clubs sit up and take notice, taking 6 Gold, 5 Silver, 2 Bronze, 14 medals for 4th-6th place, PLUS 3 Top Girl awards thanks to Tilly Arrand in the 9yrs, Natasha Crow in the 11-12yrs and Jessica Gillatt in the 13-14yrs age group categories. No mean feat amongst tough competition from big city clubs!

Head coach, Rob Crofts, was ecstatic with his teams performance saying, ―I was very proud of how all Sharks swimmers swam.‖ The long course (50m pool) events don‘t come up that often and the whole squad rose to the challenge, making the most of competing in such an awe inspiring venue. Team spirit poolside was outstanding and coach Rob praised his athletes saying he was ―Very happy how team spirit was strong with the experienced swimmers of all ages helping out those inexperienced swimmers in the Sharks way of racing.....strong and fast!‖ Leading the way was Jessica Gillat (14) claiming gold in 100m Breaststroke & 50m Freestyle, silver in 50m Fly & other medal placings. Natasha Crow (12) won gold in the 50m Fly, 50m Backstroke & silver in 50m Freestyle & other medal places to add to the Sharks tally.

The 9 year olds events saw Katy Braddock win gold in 50m Butterfly & silver in 50m Freestyle with Tilly Arrand taking gold in 50m Backstroke and two 4th place medals.

Other medal winners were Lucy Hame (10), Finleigh Dukes (11), Bridie Smith (15), Lauren Jarvis (11) & Lucy Goodwin (15).

The 10 & under and 14 & under girls relays saw heroic swims from Sharks earning 3 silver & a bronze. A fantastic achievement for both teams who were up against some tough opponents and gave spectators an exciting end to both sessions. Looking at the reaction poolside, no-one enjoyed it more than coach Rob! The entire squad earned personal best times and finished in respectable positions in each age group. A huge well done to Sophie Hame, Ruby Elderkin, Abbie Kerry-Riley, Charlotte Wilson, Lisa Goodwin, Philippa Smith, Amy Jackson, Caragh, Aislinn & Aiofe Chambers-hey, William Beevor, Madeline Knight & Nicole Dukes.

After such a brilliant start to build on, coach Rob is excited about the 2011/12 season ahead of South Axholme Sharks and is looking forward to getting the training done to make this season one to remember.

Overtaking

(Continued)

Dear readers, Police Advanced Drivers are taught a three-point overtaking method called the overtaking triangle. It defines the best line to take throughout any overtake manoeuvre and is the safest and quickest way to pass another vehicle.

In three easy steps you can combine this technique with excellent observation, anticipation and car control.

The Overtaking Position.

Consider selecting a lower gear when your long-range observation indicates that an overtake may be on. Close in gradually to the vehicle in front until you achieve the ‗Overtaking position‘. Move towards the centre line to maximise your view. If the overtake does not come off, drop back again and return to a higher gear until the next opportunity arises.

The Take-Off Position.

When an overtake opportunity arrives, move carefully and smoothly to the other side of the road to increase your view before you commit to the manoeuvre. All this takes just a second for the driver to assess. If everything is clear, accelerate quickly past the vehicle. If conditions are not right, drop back in behind the vehicle quickly and smoothly.

The Return Position.

The final part of the overtake triangle returns you safely back to your side of the road, completing the manoeuvre. Steer your vehicle to the left-hand side swiftly and smoothly, and in as straight a line as possible.

Take care and use your mirrors to ensure that you do not cut in too quickly on the vehicle you have just passed.

Two-Way Roads With three lanes.

Britain‘s dangerous three-lane roads have been much improved with the addition of white line systems, crosshatchings and solid white lines. On some roads, particularly on hills, a solid white line is paired with a broken white line. This gives the uphill two lanes (so that slow traffic has a ‗crawler lane‘) and faster downhill traffic just one lane. However, where the broken white lines are on the side of the single lane, traffic in this lane is allowed to cross the line for an overtake where it is safe to do so. While the markings are clearly defined, you should always take care and maintain excellent observation on three lane roads, as other drivers may not have your appreciation of the system.

65th EPWORTH SHOW HAILED AS MOST SUCCESSFUL YET THANKS TO RECORD ATTENDANCE NUMBERS Organisers of the Epworth and District Agricultural Show have just announced that this year‘s has been the most successful ever with record numbers of visitors heading down to join in the bank holiday celebrations.

Now in its 65th year, the show has always prided itself on being a colourful and much loved celebration of country heritage over the August bank holiday weekend, and this year it‘s exceeded all expectations.

Taking place on the Epworth Show Field, it kicked off with the Epworth Beer Festival on Saturday 27 th August where visitors spent their evening sampling real Ales and Ciders in a heated tent whilst enjoying live entertainment and singalongs from World War Two re-enactor Miss Marina Mae. ―The Beer Festival proved popular but nothing could‘ve prepared us for just how busy Show Day would be on the bank holiday Monday,‖ explains Dave Hayes, Chairman of the Epworth and District Agricultural Society. ―We‘ve never seen so many visitors and the car park was full as early as midday with people even having to park on the back lane!‖ Fortunately the sun appeared for most of the day and the rain held off so the usual entertainment line-up of showjumping, dog shows, livestock classes and trade stands could all be enjoyed by warm and dry spectators.

Live music, vintage cars, a horticultural tent and various competitions were also featured throughout the day as well as an extra special visitor in the form of world famous Titan the Robot. ―We were delighted that Titan could be with us again as he‘s very entertaining and always draws huge crowds,‖ continues Dave. ―This year was no different and his two appearances were very well received by adults and children alike – there were also the usual gasps as he made his way towards people!‖ This year, the Show‘s organisers pulled out all the stops to make it as easy as possible for visitors to attend by putting on a free bus service throughout the day to the Show Field from the Albion Grove car park. And, they‘re already working behind the scenes on next year‘s Epworth Show to make it even bigger and better! ―It was wonderful to see so many families in attendance this year and we‘re absolutely delighted with the feedback we‘ve had from people who‘ve been coming for many years and from those who have visited for the first time,‖ says Dave. ―It‘s fantastic to know that so many visitors not only enjoyed themselves but also chose to spend their bank holiday weekend helpings us celebrate our country‘s heritage.‖

―FARNDALE MURDER MYSTERY‖ AT HAXEY For the first time for some years Haxey Amateur Dramatic Society is staging two productions within the year. The choice for this autumn is a quite different play, in fact a play within a play. The Haxey cast is putting on ―The Farndale Avenue Housing Estate Townswomen‘s Guild Dramatic Society Murder Mystery‖, a comedy by David McGillivray and Walter Zerlin Jnr. The play within the play is ―Murder at Checkmate Manor‖, a cunning whodunit. The difference with this production is that all those calamities that can strike amateur dramatic groups strike this hapless cast with a vengeance.

As often with groups as amateur as the Farndale Society, the players have to take on several parts, and this adds much to the mayhem and merriment. Celia Boardman is Mrs Phoebe Reece, the domineering and patronising doyenne of the Guild, and also plays Clarissa, Patricia and Letitia, all ladies with attitude. Joan Young is Felicity and delights with her interpretation of Pawn, the unanimated butler at Checkmate Manor, and the sharply contrasting authoritative Colonel King. Diane Corbett is Thelma, playing the amorous Daphne and aged Rose. Ilene Pearson‘s role could have been written for her. She is Audrey playing Lady Bishop, Mrs King and the cackling spinster, Violet. Lynsey Yeardley is Regine, the devious French maid and also an unlikely solicitor, Mr Goodbody. Peter Lindley is Revd Gordon Pugh, the failed stage manager, and doubles as a would-be police inspector. Making his debut with the group is Keith Boardman as Henry, stage hand and compere extraordinaire. The whole comic symphony is orchestrated by producer, Mary Lenanton, responsible also for this spring‘s most successful production.

Performances are in Haxey Memorial Hall at 7.30pm on Wednesday 12, Thursday 13, Friday 14 & Saturday 15 October.
