Welcome to the November issue of the Arrow! 10 weeks til Christmas, oh no I

hear you all say! Yes, we are now on count down but before the festive season my favourite time of year; Halloween and Bonfire night. Remember to keep safe and if you can, attend an organised firework display do so. A well organised bonfire and fireworks is held every year at the Epworth showground.. This year the date is Saturday 4th November. All

proceeds from the event are distributed between local charities.

Next month we will be starting another history page written and adapted by Anthony Catherall, the history of the Royal Airforce Lindholme.

We do hope you enjoy the new monthly article, as I know many of you have enjoyed Tony’s history pages in previous issues.

The deadline for the December issue is Tuesday 14th November for distribution by the 1st December.

Isle Group of the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust Thursday November 2nd Alkborough Flats Graham Catley, a well known local knowledgeable bird expert and superb photographer, will be coming to tell us all about this special wetland reserve near Scunthorpe which attracts hundreds of birds.

Graham has monitored and recorded the bird populations at Alkborough since it was established.

Community News The Belton Autumn Club founded by the late Joan Biddle who was simply an organisational dynamo in the village and who was also the driving force behind the establishment of the Playing Field Pavilion where the Autumn meets every Thursday afternoon from 2 pm until 4pm. Over the years

many members have died and as much as many members did join us currently the membership is rather low. The Club has given a lot of fun to members in the games we play each Thursday and also in numerous outings of various sorts.

Anyone over the age of 55 would be warmly welcome and can be assured of a happy time.

An Isle organisation has notchedup a milestone with a special dinner for members to mark its diamond jubilee.

It is the Epworth Men’s Society, which marked the 60th year of its foundation with an evening meal with a guest speaker at Hatfield’s at Hatfield near Doncaster on Monday, October 2.

Some 40 members attended the event, at which after-dinner speaker Margaret Parkin gave an entertaining and highly amusing speech entitled ‘Sixty Can Be Scintillating – Sometimes.’

Mrs Parkin, who has a Master’s Degree in Education, is a author, a frequent after-dinner speaker and hails from Snaith in North Yorkshire, said she was delighted to have been invited speak at the Men’s Society’s Diamond Jubilee dinner.

She told members of the Society that one of the problems for the over-sixties was fitness - but this can occur at a much earlier age.

She related an account of when she joined a fitness gym and after a matter of minutes experienced the best exercise ever – when she ran back to the changing-room and out of the building.

The Men’s Society holds a series of events from October to the following May. They include guest speakers, visits, quizzes and indoor games nights.

The Society attracts members from all over the Isle, as well as further afield.

Epworth Old Rectory Behind the scenes at the Christmas Craft Fair Our annual event is fast approaching and will be on Saturday November 18th. What our visitors don't know is all the work that goes into preparing an event like this, particularly as this one is in the Rectory itself.

Throughout the preceding season the house is fully furnished with all the displays fine tuned ready for our guides to take visitors round and tell the story of the family and the house. Much of the furnishings and exhibitions have to be cleaned and prepared for the season to begin, which means a vast amount of work for the staff and volunteers. All that work has to be undone, as preparation for the craft fair, as the furnishings and exhibitions have to be removed to safety, especially as a number of items are irreplaceable.

A team of staff and volunteers work together to plan the event and do the final preparation, which actually begins in January with our admin sending out notice of the events to all the potential stall holders for the coming year. Decisions have to be made about which stall goes where taking into consideration things such as weight of the stock the stall holder may have to carry, if it needs special conditions such as specific temperatures, the ability of the stall holder to actually move their stock and themselves around the house, and also whether or not we require special conditions for their stock so It doesn't cause problems for the maintenance of the house.

Once the major decisions have been made about organisation we get down to the nitty gritty of actually carrying it all out. All the furniture in the house is accessioned, that is listed, numbered, and it's site in the house recorded. To move the furniture we have to create a new temporary list which tells us what furniture we have moved and where we have stored it. A small number of sturdy volunteers join in with the permanent staff to move it all about, and I can confirm from experience that it is not easy. Just finding the accession numbers is a skill in itself, then moving furniture which is hundreds of years old without damaging either it, or the structure of the house, is a very different skill set.

The Rectory housekeeper spends lots of time decorating the house to make it look festive for our visitors, which she does splendidly every year, and we do have to be careful of damaging her decorations when moving things about so as not to spoil the effect. The next big job is getting all the tables into place and labelling them for the stallholders so they can find their space, and we haven't even mentioned the small army of volunteers who donate cakes and tombola prizes for the stalls in the refectory, and those who set them up and run them on the day. Nor have we mentioned the great team of car park attenders who organise the stall and visitor parking so everyone gets into place safely and with as little difficulty as possible.

Without all those volunteers the Rectory wouldn't be able to operate. Would you like to join that group? There are lots of different jobs such as guiding, sales and reception, catering, gardening, collection care etc. we can give you training for all the jobs so not to worry if you think you don't have the skills. Community News Epworth and District Flower Club October Meeting After an absence of a few months for various reasons, the Club returned to their usual meeting place of the Stephen Jones Community Hall in Haxey for their October meeting. Members were welcomed by the chairperson, Anne Everatt, who brought everyone up to date with the planning for the Open Meeting to be held in November.

On Monday, 13th November Jonathan Moseley, the International Floral Designer and TV Allotment Challenge Judge will present “Fabulously Festive� at South Axholme Academy. This meeting is open to everyone and the demonstration will begin at 7.30pm. Admission is by ticket only and they can be purchased from any member of the club or by contacting Anne Everatt on 01427 873001. Keep an eye open for the details on the posters around the Isle.

The arrangements will be raffled and everyone attending will receive a small gift on leaving.

Everyone is looking forward to a superb evening.

The Autumn themed meeting then continued. Three members demonstrated their talents creating different Harvest/Autumn arrangements.

Marian Hughes began. Marian is a past Chairman of the Club and talked to us about how her involvement with flower arranging began a good few years ago. She showed us a pinholder which was the staple piece of equipment, along with chicken wire used before the advent of oasis. Her arrangement was attached to a large terracotta urn and Marian firstly used very pretty foliage, Japanese maple, an acer of delicate green from her garden. She added autumn shaded alstroemeria, tiny green chrysanthemums, hypericum and large begonia leaves to hide the mechanics. More flowers used were small yellow chrysanthemums and three lovely sunflowers. To enhance the Autumn/Harvest effect Marian added a bunch of vine tomatoes and a bunch of purple grapes before finally inserting a few ears of corn. Demonstrating the use of a pinholder Marian created a much smaller but similar arrangement and completed her work by strategically placing three apples beside the arrangements.

The next demonstrator was Carolyn Drury. She too, has been a Chairman of the Club. Carolyn demonstrated an arrangement, similar to some she had made for a wedding under the supervision of a well -known national demonstrator.

Her commentary was about the wedding and the directions of the professional. She used three Fatsia leaves, red robin, sunflowers, sedum spectabile, orange gerbera, rust coloured chrysanthemums, autumn shaded dahlia, Chinese lanterns, dyed oak leaves and deep red roses.

The completed arrangement was a fairly large table decoration in a basket.

Anne Everatt, the current Chairman, was our third demonstrator of the evening. Anne began with a rectangular wooden box to which she had attached two large blocks of oasis. Her arrangement was to have colours in vertical lines.

Anne positioned some dark oak leaves, much larger than those used by Carolyn and a more solid brown. Next to these she inserted pittosporum, cut from a plant she has tended until it was mature enough to trim. This added a paler green colour. Anne then produced several large, dark poppy heads and lightened the effect with a line of beautiful pale peach chrysanthemums. Autumn shaded roses followed and then a row of solid orange coloured roses.

Anne hid her mechanics with rosemary and concluded the flowers with some dark red spray chrysanthemums. To complete her modern arrangement Anne placed two large gourds enhancing the Autumn theme.

Everyone commented on how pleasant the evening had been before the arrangements were raffled off and members enjoyed a chat with refreshments.
