Welcome to the November issue of the Epworth and Belton Arrow. . What a strange year up to press, as I am writing this it appears the pandemic is reaching a peak and bizarrely it’s a postcode lottery to which tier you are in! Bonfires are cancelled, we wont be experiencing the traditional firework display. We have no idea what will happen this Christmas, if we can share it with our loved ones, give them a cuddle or even welcome the New Year in with friends and family. Its all a guessing game! Whatever our plans we need to keep safe and enjoy and make the most of what we have. I am sure it will all be a distant memory in 2021. Lindsey Lodge has launched its #weneedyou Christmas Care Appeal to enable local people to provide much-needed support from the comfort and safety of their own homes. This year due to Covid-19, nearly everything has had to be put on hold and they are facing a glaring gap in their proposed income. The Christmas Care appeal provides a number of ways for you to still get involved - whether it’s buying a real Christmas tree from Lindsey Lodge, playing our Superdraw or simply shopping at one of our stores. Every penny really does make a difference.

MATHS TUTOR The deadline for the December issue is Thursday 12th November for delivery by Sunday 28th November..

KS3, GCSE & A Level Mathematics individualised Maths tuition. Fully qualified, full time experienced head of Maths with full enhanced DBS safeguarding clearance, a PGCE teaching qualification and a BSc, MSc and PhD in Maths

Enjoy the read and keep safe!

Longstanding successful record of boosting student grades by identifying and filling ‘knowledge gaps’.

Community News The IoAHS (Epworth Garden Club) has closed this year after 25+ glorious years of gardening in the Isle. The Club still has a flourishing membership but those with time to devote to Committee duties are increasingly less in number. We would like to thank all members, Committee, speakers, Show judges and those who have supported us by buying plants, donating raffle prizes, submitting entries and donating refreshments over those years and wish you all productive growing seasons to come. As a well organised Club we acquired various bits of presentation/holding shows equipment that may be useful to other local clubs and groups or for schools that have a wildlife/growing garden. If you would be interested in items of this equipment please do get in touch on 01427 874126 by 20 November to discuss – clubs and groups should have in their Terms of Reference that they would also pass onto other groups if they too were to close. Happy gardening. Committee of IoAHS

Garden gigs bring joy to adults with dementia People living with dementia, along with their family carers, are enjoying a series of socially distanced ‘garden gigs’ in Doncaster. These lively and interactive music sessions organised by darts, a participatory arts organisation based in Doncaster, are designed to support adults with dementia who have been feeling isolated during lockdown. Participants enjoy singing songs, making music and creating connections in the comfort of their gardens with professional musician Janet Wood. One participant, who thoroughly enjoyed the Garden Gigs, said “It’s been great singing songs with Janet and my friends. We’ve had a really fun afternoon.” Musician Janet Wood said, “Singing and music can make a real difference to people’s health and wellbeing. These Garden Gigs are a safe and fun way for adults with dementia and their families to experience the joy of making music together at a safe social distance.” darts normally lead weekly Singing for Memory music sessions for adults with dementia and their family carers at The Point on South Parade. Staff have been keeping in touch with group members throughout lockdown and know how lonely and isolated some of them are feeling. Although darts artists have created lots of online activities as part of the ‘darts at Home’ offer, many group members do not have access to the internet or do not feel confident in downloading resources. The garden gigs are the perfect way to stay connected with people while darts’ building, The Point, is closed to the public. darts continue to provide dementia-friendly activities on their website.

Upcoming events at Epworth Old Rectory This year has not been one of the best for The Old Rectory due to restrictions made on museums because of the Coronavirus Pandemic. Many of the normal events which are held throughout the year have been cancelled this year to ensure that our visitors are safe, which has resulted in reduced opening hours and smaller tour group sizes. The Rectory has achieved it's Covid "Good to Go" certificate with the security and hygiene measures put into place. As a charity, this means that the income , which keeps the rectory open for visitors, is greatly reduced. In order to increase the annual income a little, a decision has been made to keep the rectory open for visitors during November and December before closing for Christmas on the 18th of December. One of the main events to be cancelled in this period is the annual Christmas Craft Fair which is always very well attended, with some of the stall holders booking their stall from one year to the next. However, it is still possible to book a tour from now until Christmas closing. The Rectory is also offering a special evening tour during two weeks of December, on the 8th, 9th and 10th and the 15th, 16th, and 17th. This is a special tour by candlelight when the Rectory will look more like it used to be when the Wesley's lived there in the 18th century. A cosy fire and costumed guides in the entrance hall will welcome visitors in from the cold. They will then see the rest of the house by candlelight (held by guides), hearing the fascinating story of the family life and the happenings in the Rectory, and sometimes elsewhere, ending in Susanna's kitchen where another cosy fire will see them on their way home. Due to current restrictions the tour groups are limited in number and should be only those in the same support bubble, which is why the Rectory is offering 2 tours per evening, one at 6pm and the second at 7pm on all the dates listed above. For further information and to book tours during November and December please contact the Rectory on 01427 872268. You can also contact via the website, www.epwortholdrectory.org.uk, and facebook page.

MACMILLAN TAKE-AWAY COFFEE MORNING BIG THANK YOU A BIG THANK YOU to all who contributed to the amazing sum of £400, in the form of donations and purchases of the ‘take-away coffee morning in a bag’, held in my garage due to the cold wind (see photo), as an alternative to the usual BIG COFFEE MORNING in the Imperial Hall. In spite of the weather visitors, who came in ones and twos (observing the necessary social distancing rules) found the time to stop on the drive to chat, making my day very sociable, a real treat after so much isolation. THANKS also to those who donated raffle prizes, including the usual beautiful, big fruit basket form Gravel’s greengrocers, and the generous contributions from Pauline Davies’ plant sales and her own fundraising. On the same night the Epworth and Isle of Axholme Rotary Club’s now monthly Facebook quiz raised £185 (so far) for Macmillan. Many thanks to Val Hackney for setting the questions, and Nick and Sue for putting them on their Facebook page, and of course to everyone who took part and donated. In Epworth there has been a BIG COFFEE MORNING every September for many years, with last year’s raising over £1000. All money from these events goes directly to the Scunthorpe branch, where it is used to fund Macmillan Nurses, Support centres at Scunthorpe, Grimsby and Goole hospitals, equipment needed for patients etc. Macmillan Cancer Support is just one of the many charities facing the challenge of fundraising this year with the limit on social gatherings, so your support is really appreciated. I would also like to add my personal THANK YOU to all the local businesses who have supported so many of us through this difficult year. Regular home deliveries from Gravel’s, Parkin’s Butchers, Albion Bakers were a godsend and thanks to Weswoodside Plants our garden and hanging baskets have looked really lovely. Thanks, too, to all the other local businesses delivering in the area.

Help shape local animal welfare The local branch of the RSPCA is seeking to recruit volunteer Trustees to help set the strategic direction of the Branch, monitor its progress, ensure appropriate policies are in place and support the management team, staff and volunteers. Doncaster, Rotherham & District branch supports the work of colleagues from the National RSPCA. The branch receives no government funding and as a result relies heavily on the generous donations of the public and local income generation such as fundraising events and charity shops. The Trustee role offers significant influence over the future of local animal welfare. Many people find the Trustee role enhances their skill set, advances their professional development or provides a meaningful outlet in retirement. The minimum commitment is approximately four hours per month. Some experience of managing people and/or a budget is essential, as is a passion for animal welfare, an ability to work within a team and reasonable IT literacy. Trustees must be 18 years or over. Please contact the Branch for more information. COVID19 has meant a 95% drop in income during lockdown. It is vital the branch survives to help animals like Adam. The cat was in a bad state with severe injuries to his tail which required amputation. He is coping well and has definitely earned a few treats for being such a good patient. He has a little way to go in his recovery and is still receiving treatment but will hopefully be looking for his forever home in no time. There are many ways to help the Branch with its mission to re-home and rehabilitate animals including volunteering, leaving a legacy, donating cash or goods, sponsorship through the Safe Haven programme and attending events. There are RSPCA charity shops at Bawtry, Maltby, Rossington and Thorne as well as an eBay shop. The Animal Centre re-homes animals in its care and has a pet supplies store on site for all your requirements. The Branch also provides a pet cremation service and a memorial garden for your beloved pets. To donate £5, text ‘RSPCADRB’ to 70085.

Lindsey Lodge is inviting people across North Lincolnshire to Light up a Life and remember a lost loved one. The service, which is open to anyone who has lost someone, will be held virtually on Friday 4 December and will be live streamed from the Hospice memorial garden. Lindsey Lodge Chief Executive Karen Griffiths said: “Christmas can be a very difficult time for anyone who has lost a loved one, particularly this year, which has been incredibly challenging for everyone. She added: “As we enter the festive season, we are reaching out to our local community and inviting them to join us in our Light up a Life activities. “Our service this year will be held virtually and we are aiming to capture the very special essence of Light up a Life, to give people the opportunity to honour those they have lost in a safe and socially distanced live ceremony in the comfort of their own home.” Lindsey Lodge’s live service will take place via Facebook live on Friday 4 December, where the trees will be lit. Each light represents a life, and will remain lit throughout the Christmas period. Karen added: “Once people have dedicated a light, they will receive two tree decorations, one to hang on of our trees in our memorial garden throughout the month of December. “The second decoration can be used to decorate trees at home. We’re encouraging people to turn on their Christmas lights at home simultaneously with the lighting of the Hospice tree.” https://www.lindseylodgehospice.org.uk/news/light-up-a-life-celebrations-to-continue/

We would like to offer some crime prevention advice aimed at making it more difficult for criminals to target your vehicles. • Always double check your car is physically secure and alarmed • Keep keys out of sight inside your property • Consider a signal blocking pouch to keep your keys in • Use a steering wheel lock • Consider investing in a tracking device. It will significantly increase the chances of locating and recovering a vehicle if it is stolen • Check to see if you can switch off the wireless signal from your fob • Park your car as close to your property as possible or block it in • Check and make sure that no valuables are left in sight in the vehicle We take all reports of this nature seriously. If your vehicle is stolen, or you have information regarding a vehicle theft, please contact us on our non-emergency number 101, or speak with your local officers. Always call 999 in an emergency.

Epworth Open Garden Presentation Following quite a long delay, due to Coronavirus restrictions, The participants in the successful Epworth Open Gardens weekend on 11th and 12th of July, this year were presented with the certificates from Lindsey Lodge Hospice with a note of how much the five participating gardens had raised with their combined efforts. It has taken this extended time because many of the admin staff at the Hospice were furloughed prior to the open gardens weekend, and have only recently been allowed back to work. During the lockdown period Lindsey Lodge was unable to open its charity shops, one of its main income streams, so were grateful for the donation from the open gardens, which totalled ÂŁ664-52. Had we not just been re-emerging from lockdown and people still afraid to venture forth the sum would probably have been considerably larger. However it was still a worthwhile donation. There were five participating gardens, fewer than previous years of course, for the same reasons as there were limited numbers of visitors. Those who did visit were suitably impressed with the precautions taken to ensure their safety, and very impressed with the gardens themselves. Those visitors deserve a vote of thanks for helping to raise that sum, as do the five garden participants, who were Epworth Old Rectory and Wesley Memorial Church. Both of these gardens were unmanned over the weekend. However the other three were ably manned by their owners, Ms G Ergul with her brother Andrew Hackney, Mr and Mrs R Fish and Mr and Mrs G Fordham, with some assistance from their grand daughter Robyn Edwards. Mrs Fordham presented the certificates to the other participants and added her thanks for their efforts. Maybe, sometime in the future when the present pandemic is over Epworth will repeat the experience and gain even more support for the Hospice. If we do, I'm certain anyone coming along will be made to feel as welcome as they did on that weekend in July 2020.
