Welcome to the November issue of the Arrow! Christmas planning is well underway in this months issue. Plenty of local events to celebrate the festivities. Hirst Priory are holding their party nights and afternoon teas with Santa. Boston Park Farm have their annual grotto including a tractor ride. Book early to avoid disappointment. Epworth Old Rectory are holding their annual Christmas Fair on Saturday 17th November, along with their famous candlelight tours. We received a lovely phone call last month from a lady who lives in Epworth who wants to remain anonymous. “I would like to say what a wonderful village we live in. Day to day I experience kindness of people in the village, from helping me cross the road to helping me with my shopping. It is a great place to live and the people really do make my life easier, I really do appreciate the help which is offered Enjoy the read and please note the deadline for the December issue is Wednesday 14th November for distribution by the 2nd December. If you are interested in advertising or simply emailing me some community news, please be in touch before the date.

Isle Group of the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust Thursday November 1st Red Foxes by Dr. Carl Soulsbury Stephen Jones Hall (rear of the Methodist Chapel), Low Street, Haxey On Thursday November 1st we will be welcoming Dr. Carl Soulsbury to talk about red foxes, a species which we find in Britain but also around the world. He has been studying these for many years both in the UK and abroad. Red foxes are animals we see occasionally here in the Isle but they are more commonly seen in towns and cities. They are an animal which we know of and recognise from an early age but most of us know very little about, so this should prove to be an interesting evening. We hope you will come along, everyone is welcome, you don't have to be a member of the Wildlife Trust. Our meetings are always on the first Thursday of the month from October to May in the Stephen Jones Hall in Haxey. For further information about the local Trust group and their meetings please contact Tony Lee on 01427 753831 or Chris Trinder on 01427 872051. Details about the group are also on the Lincolnshire Trust web site under area groups.

ROYAL AIR FORCE LINDHOLME Adapted and Edited for publication by Anthony Catherall acknowledgement to Margaret Draper In fact the station role changed completely in November 1945 when No 1656 Heavy Conversion Unit was disbanded; the large number of technicians employed by this unit was posted out and partially replaced by new staff to man the Group Major Servicing Unit that was formed in December 1945. This Unit was immediately employed on ‘Operation Junk’ – the disposal of large numbers of aircraft no longer required in peace-time. The first forty arrived in December and by the end of February 1946 over one hundred had been received, categorised and disposed of to various places. The Major Servicing Unit spent only five months at Lindholme; in May 1946 another change took place which completely altered the face of the Station. Phase Two of ‘Operation Junk’ was transferred to Royal Air Force Scampton and from Scampton to Lindholme came No’s 57 and 100 Squadrons. The reason for this move was that both squadrons were converting from Lancaster to Lincoln aircraft and Lindholme’s runways were more suitable to these heavier machines. The new arrivals soon established a reputation for efficiency. was loudly praised for its efforts in a bombing competition month later No 100 Squadron was chosen to fly a Lincoln Display during the Czechoslovak Fair. The station was representatives:
In August 1946 No 57 Squadron (‘Operation Lash-Out’) and one over Prague at an International informed afterwards that their
“were the best ambassadors the country had had in Czechoslovakia since the war (3) (1)

In October, No 100 Squadron was again selected to send an aircraft on a goodwill mission, this time to Santiago for the inauguration of the new president of Chile. In both of these missions the aircraft was piloted by Squadron Leader D Bretherton DFC, who subsequently retired as a Group Captain and became head of one of the training establishments for Guide Dogs for the Blind. By the end of October 1946, however, both squadrons had left Lindholme. No 57 Squadron went to Royal Air Force Waddington and No 100 Squadron to Royal Air Force Hemswell. They were replaced by No’s 1653 and 1660 Heavy Conversion Units, both equipped with the Lancaster. The latter unit was almost immediately disbanded and joined up with No 1653. The Station Commander recorded his views on the changes in the Unit diary. “We are frantically trying to learn each other’s names, find out what each other’s job is and rebuild a smooth and well organised station. We are grossly over-crowded with airmen and NCOs sleeping 18 in a Barrack Room and Officers 8 in a Barrack Room. To get everyone into peace-time accommodation airmen have to be accommodated in the Annex to No 5 Hanger.” (1)

This unsettled air is reflected in station strengths. In April 1946 before the squadrons had arrived it was 1230, in May 1946 after their arrival it was 850, by August 1946 it had dropped to 704. Yet in November 1946 with the new units installed it had almost reached war-time proportions with 1,658 people on the camp. Early in 1947 Bruce Woodcock, at that time British and Empire Heavy-weight Boxing Champion and considered by many good judges a prospective world champion, gave an exhibition bout on the station. As a native of the area he was something of a local hero and the station magazine eulogised over his performance “He gave a marvellous exhibition of scientific boxing … with amazing speed countering his opponent’s left with his feet and his famous left.” This display must have been a highlight because conditions in the 1946/47 winter were appalling. Training was continuing spasmodically through a spell of extraordinary bad weather and in March 1947 the station answered an SOS from Cottesmore, isolated by 12 foot snowdrifts, to parachute in medical supplies for a critically ill farm labourer and 200 loaves of bread to help feed the stranded servicemen. Group Captain Clelland, the Station Commander, was able to tell the Yorkshire Post reporter on his return from the mercy trip that the Station Commander of Cottesmore had told him by radio that “we will send you the Bread Units later.” (2) This was, however, not the end of the station’s rescue effort for floods followed the snow and soon the station was called upon to rescue people marooned by floodwater in the Selby area. No 1653 Heavy Construction Unit became N0 230 OCU in April 1947 and in June 1947 the No 1 Group Communications Flight arrival on the station from Royal Air Force Finningley. In September 1847, the station held an ‘At Home’ to commemorate the Battle of Britain. The programme, a copy of which is retained in the station records, summarised the functions of Training Wing. “Here all aircrew – pilots, navigators, bomb aimers, signallers, engineers and gunners – are formed into ‘crews’ working as a team under a Pilot Captain. These crews are taught to fly Lancaster aircraft by day and night, to find the target, hit the target and return safely to base under almost any weather conditions. On the satisfactory completion of this training they are posted to bomber squadrons, still in the same crews and become part of the main striking force of the Royal Air Force – Bomber Command.” (1) (2)

Apples Crafts and Candlelight at Epworth Old Rectory The end of the season at the Rectory has arrived so quickly this year - where has the time gone? But we're not quite finished yet with so much for you to come and see and do before Christmas. First up is the Apple pressing Day with Apple of your Isle group, who will press your own apples to give you apple juice to take home and drink as fresh juice, or later after it may have passed through a process or two with additives such as sugar and yeast.. Then comes the Christmas Craft Fair on November 17th. Once again the stalls space is completely filled with a waiting list for spaces. It's a great opportunity to fill the present list with quality hand made craft items, all produced by local craftsmen and women. The variety of crafts and items for sale is totally brilliant. How about trying to guess the weight of the cake while you enjoy a cup of tea Call into the gift shop to see what we may have, or to book your place at the next event in our yearly calendar. This one is not to be missed - the candlelit tours. We have limited space on these tours so you need to prebook now. See the house , fully furnished as normal following the crat Fair, but as the Wesleys would have experienced it, by candlelight. Your tour starts inthe Gift shop where you will be welcomed by a costumed guide, who will lead you, by the light of a lantern, to the front door where, after knocking for admission, you will be welcomed into the entrance hall, with a blazing fire to take away any chill, by even more costumed guides. You will then be taken all round the house with only candle light available and hear the story of all the happenings at the rectory while the Wesleys were resident there. You will them end your tour in Susanna's kitchen sitting around the table with another blazing fire while you chat over a cup of hot fruit punch, home made pork pie, sausage rolls, mince pies, fruit cake with butter and cheese,, and whatever else we choose to add to the menu. Although this ends our year for 2018, there will be so much more to look forward to for next year. 2019 is the 350th anniversary if the birth of Susanna Wesley, the mother of John and Charles, the founders of Methodism. Keep your eyes on these pages, and our Facebook page for more information as dates are finalised. Don't miss out on any of our great event days for the end of this year, and certainly not for next year's.
