Macmillan ‘Big Coffee’ Morning Thank you The Coffee morning held in the Imperial Hall, Epworth, on Friday 27 September was bigger and better than ever, raising £600. A big thank you to all those who attended and contributed so generously, to those who donated even if not able to attend on the day, and to the many volunteers who worked so hard to make it successful.

Thank you also to all those who donated raffle and tombola prizes, including the following local businesses: Epworth Co-op, Gallerie de Fleurs, Gravel’s Greengrocers, Gravel’s Florist, Inside Outside, Mimosa, Sarah’s Home Store, Utopia Soft Furnishings, Vanilla.

The event was supported and the raffle drawn by Lynn France of the Scunthorpe and Goole Macmillan Cancer Support Group which has raised over £1million since its inauguration.

The group's next annual fundraising event is the Light Up A Life ceremony, which gives bereaved relatives the chance to remember their loved ones in a special and poignant way with the lighting of a tree of remembrance on the evening of Wednesday 13 November in the Foundry shopping centre, Scunthorpe. Names of loved ones, and messages to their memory, will also be written in a book of remembrance, which will be kept on view in the Foundry until the New Year. Money raised from the sponsoring of a light and an entry in the book will be shared equally by Macmillan and Lindsey Lodge Hospice. Forms are available locally from Carol Mellers, 01427 872878

Information Christmas time is almost upon us and the Force will be launching its seasonal drink drive campaign and with people getting into the festive spirit the message is simple don’t drink and drive, you risk your life and those of your passengers and other road users. What people tend to forget is the morning after when they are still over the limit even though it is hours after their last drink. People’s perception is that sleep, coffee and showers help you sober up but this is not the case. I want people to enjoy the festive period but at the same time be safe. Think ahead and consider your driving habits over this time or try to arrange alternative transport.

School Visits - The Neighbourhood Team have been out visiting the local Primary Schools and South Axholme Academy, where we have been delivering both stranger danger and social media talks. Also as the nights are getting darker, Please sit down with your children and discuss the issue of road safety and consider your children’s clothing by wearing reflective/light coloured items.

The ‘open door’ policy is working nicely and we have received lots of visits to the station. The door will remain unlocked whilst we are working in the station, so feel free to pop by if you need to speak with us or alternatively you can contact us by any other means as above.

The November meeting of West Butterwick and District Gardening Club takes place on Monday 4th November at West Butterwick Village Hall at 7.30pm. The speaker is Tony Featherstone. The title of his talk is ‘ Small spaces, big returns – growing fruit and vegetables’.

The December meeting is on Monday 2nd December. Peter Barnard will return to complete his talk on apple trees and please bring your apples for apple pressing.A unique piece of history has come to light at Epworth’s Old Rectory, where renovation work at the museum is underway.

A shoe has been discovered in a void in the kitchen wall – bricked up behind the oldest beams which suggest that it could go back to the time when the house was built more than 300 years ago.

The Old Rectory was the childhood home of John and Charles Wesley, who founded a movement that went on to become the world-wide Methodist Church, and it is thought the shoe comes from the time the Wesleys lived here.

“There was a tradition of putting shoes under the floors of new buildings as a form of lucky charm so it looks as if that is what happened when this house was built in 1709,” said Rev Claire Potter, curator at the museum.

“We found it when we were excavating the kitchen fireplace in a void at the top of the fireplace,” she added.

Northampton Museum, which has a renowned collection of shoes, is helping the Old Rectory to identify and date the shoe and will also be giving advice on how to care for it and clean it.

It could be a man’s or a lady’s shoe and it shows evidence of repair suggesting it was not new when it was put there. The house will be 304 years old this December, so this shoe could be older than that.

“We think it may even have belonged to either Samuel or Susanna Wesley – John and Charles’ parents, who live there when Samuel was Rector at Epworth’s St Andrew’s Church,” said Rev Potter.

Isle Dance for Health The Autumn 2013 programme of folk dances in the Isle of Axholme under Isle Dance for Health is coming to Epworth and Crowle in November.

The three dances in Westwoodside and the first two of the dances in Epworth have attracted large and rapturous audiences and were deemed to be a great success. Everyone really liked the live music played by local folk dance band, Lys St Georges, as well as the teaching and the selection of folk dances.

The dances are geared towards those over the age of 40 and have been funded by North Lincolnshire NHS (under its Community Public Health Improvement Programme).

You don’t need a partner nor any experience in Country Dancing and the dances will be suitable for all levels of fitness. No previous experience is needed as expert tuition is on hand.

Future dates are: Epworth Imperial Hall Tuesday, 5 November Crowle Community Centre Thursday 14 November Thursday 21 November Thursday 28 November All dances run from 2.30 – 4.30pm and admission is £2.

Amateur Dramatics The Epworth Mowbray Players No. 17 by Anthony Catherall

In my now long life and like many of you reading this you will like me recall different era’s in your life too.

In fact 1966 was in itself an era of football excellence, when Alf Ramsey’s disciplined squad won the World Cup against Germany 4-2 after extra-time, England have not achieved such glory ever since.

In their own inimitable way the Epworth Mowbray players had their era coupled with glory. There were then, one of literally hundreds of dramatic societies performing locally all over the country, some are still in existence, but I believe that in these past articles we have fully justified and given Epworth Mowbray Players the recognition they fully deserve. They gave so much pleasure to thousands of people in those past years of excellent productions.

I have met only a handful of these performers, but one stands out above all others that inspired me to write about their exploits Miss Marjorie Trimingham. Whenever I visit her in Haxey she is always as bright now as she ever was, may God Bless you forever Marjorie.

So we come to the last performances of these dedicated amateur thespians, giving their own characterisations in Bill Naughton’s My Flesh, My Blood”. Produced this time,

by Rev. W. B. Harvey, B.A. and unusually performed, during the autumn on 26-29 October 1966, all proceeds of which went to the Renovation Fund of St Andrews Church.

Space precludes me from much more detail, but only Gordon Fletcher is missing from the cast photograph below.

Now & Then - Then & Now No. 55

This month and every month see Epworth in bygone days and compare to today's images!

Epworth's Temperance Hall, was built in 1868 for the United Kingdom Temperance Alliance. Standing outside the entrance circa 1905 a group of people including ladies with aprons that helped with the catering often for people from the adjoining Chapel. The hall over the years, has been used for many purposes. It was the first place in Epworth to show 'moving pictures'. During WW2 it was used at nighttime as a centre for monitoring bomb damage locally, having beds in the room to the left complete with its own very new telephone.

Below a August 2013 photograph, of the staff at Harold Woolgar Insurance business. Harold purchased it from the UK Temperance Alliance in 1986. Today much of the business is involved with farming insurance. Of great interest to me, following my time in the Fire Service and unique in Epworth, is the Fire Insurance Mark or Plaque, placed high up top left hand side of the front of the building to prevent theft, see inset. If a building had a Fire Mark displayed on a building it meant that insurance had been paid. Each insurance company maintained its own Fire Brigades and would deal with the fire only if a building had a plaque with their name on. The first to use a Fire Mark was the Sun Fire Office, sometime before 1700.

A bit of Halloween History...

Halloween’ or ‘Hallows Eve’ is an annual, internationally celebrated event on the 31st October. ‘ In today’s society it appears that the underlining origins behind Halloween has dwindled and it is not commonly celebrated for the correct reasons, primarily for confectionary and mysterious pursuits.

Halloween is a celebration surrounded by superstition and ghoulish activities.

It is thought to have originated with the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain. During this time people would light bonfires to warn off any roaming ghosts because it was thought that on the eve of Samhain, which was the 31st October, the dead returned as ghosts.

This is why today we use lit pumpkins as a traditional Halloween decoration. Over time Halloween has evolved to a more community friendly celebration involving trick or treating, which is always popular among children. With Halloween increasing in popularity, it has become big business in numerous countries, globally. It is one of the most celebrated events in the calendar so however you chose to spend your Halloween, either in a more traditional way or more contemporary, embrace its history and origins.

European Languages Day

On 26th September, 20 Year 9 students took part in European Day of Languages to celebrate the importance of language learning, cultural diversity and above all, how fun learning a language can be. European Day is a popular event with many countries taking part across the World.

During the day, students researched and wrote articles for inclusion in the 3 rd edition of the Modern Foreign Languages’ newspaper ‘Quoi de Neuf?’ This year’s newspaper includes articles on fashion, sport, topical news stories, interviews with new members of staff and puzzles.

At morning break, students were able to take part in a food tasting session, where they enjoyed food and snacks from a number of different countries across Europe. This proved to be very popular!

The newspaper will be available from school very soon. If you would like a copy, please contact one of the Modern Foreign Languages team.

Year 9 English Schools’ Cup The Year 9's visited Howden in the first round of the English schools’ cup competition. South Axholme started the game well. Harvey Ablett, Max Brinkley and Richie Burdett all had shots blocked off the line in the opening 15 minutes.

Richie Burdett's set piece delivery continued to cause all sorts of problems for Howden, and it was only a combination of bad luck and good defending which kept the scoreline at 0-0 going into half-time.

South Axholme continued to apply the pressure in the second half and Max Brinkley was rewarded for his hard work with a well taken opening goal. The game then started to open up, suiting South Axholme’s fast paced attacks. Substitute, Bobby Foster, added an impressive hat trick. Man of the match, Ritchie Burdett scored 2 and there were also goals for Robbie Robson, Scott Ewen and Harvey Ablett. The scoreline was kept one-sided by 3 excellent saves by Joe Maxfield late in the game.

HOW LONG TO CARE? There has been national publicity about how long it takes a carer to look after an elderly person. With the allotted time given by some authorities of 15 minutes considered as too short. As someone who spent thirty years in health care authorities I know the real matter is not only how long it takes to care, but how much does this cost and have we the budget for it. Accountants ask if it is value for money. In our own lives we make many compromises between what we would want to do, and what we can actually afford. It has that difficult phrase behind it of ‘budget control.’

It would be marvellous for the elderly to have more than fifteen minutes where that is advantageous, but part of the equation is are we (you and I) prepared to fund that.

I don’t know how many of you shop online. There have been reports of help being reduced where clients have the facility to shop online, and so arguably do not need a helper to shop. It of course disregards the normal social aspect of shopping, of the lively interaction with the helper who shops.

We need one another not only for those necessary jobs but also to enliven our lives by the conversation and contact with one another. We take it for granted until we do not have it. At harvest we thank God for the things of harvest, but we thank God too for all those who are part of our lives today, and without whom we would be socially impoverished.

SCHOOLS START NEW TERM WITH COMMON GOAL AS MULTI-TRUST ACADEMY Two schools have started the new term with a common goal to further develop education and pupil wellbeing in the Isle.

South Axholme Academy and Epworth Primary Academy received parliamentary approval over the summer to allow them to forge ahead with their plans to become, Isle Education Trust (IET), a multi-trust academy placing pupil success and satisfaction at its very heart.

"Building on this year’s strong academic success, with 85% of our pupils achieving grade 'C' or above in Maths, we are confident in providing our children both at primary and secondary stages with an exceptionally high level of education,” commented Marie Lister Headteacher of the Isle Education Trust.

"We are immensely proud of our GCSE students with our maths results placing us in the top 1% of schools nationally! And, as the development and implementation of IET continues over the coming months we will ensure all our pupils continue to be engaged and enjoy their time with us, and parents are confident in their choice of education provider for their children.”

The implementation team which has been created with personnel from both primary and secondary sectors will ensure best practice is achieved to support the learning of Epworth Primary school children throughout Key Stage 1 and 2 and their transition to the secondary stage.

Furthermore, South Axholme Academy is no stranger to offering support to its seven feeder primary schools in the area. Summer schools have been held, assistance is given in Music, PR, Drama and Foreign Languages and students at the school already help through a reading mentoring programme.

"These are exciting times for all pupils, staff and parents who will benefit from the newly formed Isle Education Trust,” said Marie. LONG DISTANCE RUNNERS IN THE ISLE OF AXHOLME

The Epworth half-marathon, always inspires me, to get out my camera and find a good spot to take some photographs. The first marathon I saw live, along with my younger daughter, was the inaugural London Marathon in 1981. I've always been an athletics fan now here in Epworth we have an athletic event of our own, I just wish we could see more local support, with on course spectators to cheer and inspire our many local runners.

My two chosen locations to set up the camera were, on the hill out of Epworth on the Owston Ferry road and the Observation Post plantation on the Beltoft Road.

Sunday 29 September 2013, was a gloriously sunny morning with a flourishing easterly wind, not ideal for the 276 runners who entered with 252 completing the run. The wind certainly made a difference to the times of both the fun and elite runners on the mostly flat scenic course.

Pumlani Bangani, a Scunthorpe resident, and member of Salford Harriers) won the men's race for the second time in 75.23 minutes, compared to his last years time of 70.53. (The course record here is 66.40 set in 2010 by Andrew Pearson from Dewsbury).

James Wardman, (Rothwell Harriers) finished second in 77.09 min, having a best ever time elsewhere of 74.28) Gavin Mann, (Scunthorpe & District) finished third in 80.05 minutes.

Lots of ladies ran and it was Jayne Baldwin, of Doncaster Trail Running Association, who came out on top in a very creditable time of 89.02 - indeed coming in 25th overall. Second, Emma Green, (Bingley Harriers) 90.19 and third Gill Hoole, (Scunthorpe & District) 91.16.

At the beginning and finish in the Market Place there was a feeling of great excitement. I believe many were here supporting friends running for a most worthwhile charity A thought perhaps for next year, of some street entertainment for the spectators during the quiet 70 minutes while the race is being run and even some shops opening locally for refreshments and shopping.

Earlier at 09:45, a Family Fun Run of 900 metres along Albion Hill - Rectory Street - Greengate and Hollingsworth Lane was completed in aid of the Anna Verrico, cancer appeal, after which many friends under 'Team Verrico' completed the main event, including husband Paul who got round in 2.11.42 see photo of some of the team.

On speaking to Julian Moorhouse, the main organiser he said, " it was a great event again - the 4th running of the Isle of Axholme Marathon and the event continues to grow each year. The word is getting around that this is a friendly event with a fast course for the runners. I hope we can grow to over 500 runners next year".

I look forward to the next running in 2014. I feel we should congratulate Julian and his team for a commendable initiative for Epworth, that I also hope, will grow and grow.

TRENTSIDE FEDERATION SCHOOL NEWS We are almost at the half-way point for this Autumn Term and we are well underway with the World War II topic for Key Stage 2 at St Martin’s. Very shortly, we shall be welcoming Bob Fish, former Headteacher of St Martin’s, in to school as he is to give a personalised talk about his family’s World War ll experiences.

The youngest pupils (Nursery and Reception) from both our schools have been enjoying new resources linked to Water Play and Den Building. These resources are linked in to the exciting ‘Early Excellence Project’ that the Federation is involved with – ‘Enhancing Outdoor Learning for 3 – 5 Year Olds’. We are looking forward to seeing how this develops over the coming year.

At this time of year, we are very much focused on Harvest Festival and there has been plenty of vegetable growing at West Butterwick with the ‘We Can Grow’ Project. The tomatoes and carrots were a great success. We still have some leeks and celery to harvest, not to mention another pumpkin! Once this has been done, we shall formulate a growing plan for this next year. I know that strawberries will be on the menu once again as they were so popular last year. Gardening skills are to be extended to bulb-planting this term too, as a group of children are to take on ‘planting up’ a flower bed in St Mary’s churchyard.

Look out for some Spring colour in due course. Harvest Festivals this year raised money for Anthony Nolan - a charity dedicated to supporting childhood leukaemia sufferers in the UK, saving lives of people with blood cancer. This charity was founded almost 40 years ago by Shirley Nolan, in honour of her son.

The charity finds incredible individuals willing to donate blood stem cells to save the lives of people with blood cancer. Since setting up this charity, 10,000 people have received transplants that have given them a chance of life. Leukaemia is the biggest childhood cancer in the UK. I would like to thank all of the children and their families for their generous donations of gifts as these were ‘auctioned off’ following the services. Thanks too, to Jean Marshall for being our auctioneer at West Butterwick. A number of tins and packets from St Martin’s were also sent off to The Forge in Scunthorpe for the benefit of ‘vulnerable people’ in our local community such as the homeless, offering them breakfast, hot drinks, lunch and activities to engage in.

Our School Councillors for 13/14 have now been elected by their peer groups. We look forward to working with Levi, Harvey, Anya, Daisy, Josh and Danielle of West Butterwick and Melissa, Maisie, Leon, Ethan, Yasmine and Olivia of St Martin’s. The School Council from 12/13 of West Butterwick will also continue to run as they have a ‘Playground Markings’ project to see through that was started last academic year. A focus for this year’s School Councils will be ‘Healthy Schools’. We now have Playground Leaders and ‘Sports Ambassadors’ too, at both schools. Our Sports Ambassadors, a number of our oldest pupils, have been identified as having ‘potential leadership qualities’. They will attend an ‘Ambassadors Academy’ - a practical day where young people from across North Lincolnshire will have the opportunity to learn and practice leadership skills, linked to sporting activities, that can be taken back to their schools, to be put into practice in a variety of settings such as lunchtime activities and after school clubs. I am sure that they are very excited about their involvement in this project.

The visit to Beckingham Marshes by Key Stage 1 at St Martin’s was successful, although the day’s weather was wet wet wet! A good time was had by all. Thank goodness for wellies and waterproofs!

We are looking forward to the forthcoming Family Service that will take part at St Mary’s Church on Sunday 27th October. The theme is ‘Bible Sunday. The next Community Worship (Lighting the Candle Group) will take place on the afternoon of Friday 22 nd November at 3pm in St Mary’s. St Martin’s Service of Remembrance will take place on Friday 15th November,1.30pm start in church.

THE APPLE OF YOUR ISLE NEWS In the last article I looked at picking and storing your fruit. In this article I am looking at some things you can do with your fruit and start to look at some health care for your trees over the winter.

As well as eating your apples and pears and turning them into jams, chutneys and a variety of tasty disjes, you can also turn them into fresh apple and pear juice and into cider and perry. The process for making juice (and the further step to make it into cider and perry) is not difficult.

Different varieties of apples and pears produce different amounts of juice when pressed. An early apple which produces much sweet juice is Katy. This is a favourite of some commercial producers of apple juice as well as being one of my favourites. Using apples which are ripe and have been allowed to mature on the tree rather than being picked early ensures that many of the natural fruit sugars can be available in your juice.

The process for making juice follows these stages: collecting suitable fruit and discarding any that it is mouldy or very badly damaged; washing it (apple juice flavoured with dirt is not my favourite); breaking down the metabolism of the fruit either by smashing it (the traditional way was to smash the fruit in a bucket with a large piece of wood, but nowadays we use a large mincer – called a scratter – but you could use an electric drill with a mixing attachment) or by freezing the fruit; and then pressing the pulp into juice. The commercial producers of produce pasteurise the juice to prevent it from going off or becoming alcoholic. I found that bottled produce starts to ferment (using the natural yeasts in the air) after about three days. If you can't drink all your juice in this time – and unless you want to make it into cider – you can freeze it.

This process is relatively straightforward once you have the right equipment, and you might be interested to know that The Apple of Your Isle hire out pressing equipment.

From October onwards trees start to lose their leaves. The process of tidying up around your fruit trees is an important one at this time of year. Collecting up falling leaves will give you a wonderful leaf compost for your garden next year if the leaves are bagged or otherwise collected to rot down. If the leaves remain on the ground they will get blown about and some will be used by worms. If you don’t tidy them away you risk harbouring any diseases transferred from the tree to the leaves. The same applies to rotten fruit – of any size – and these should be collected and binned.

As the leaves fall from a tree, it is worth starting to look at the growth that the tree has made this year and also spot any damage to branches. This might be because of a great weight of fruit, but there might also be signs of disease – canker perhaps - in the wood. This will prepare you for the task later in the year of pruning the tree.

Camera Club News...

At the meeting on Tuesday 8 October 2013 the speaker was David Gibbins ARPS, AFIAP, APAGB, BPE3. from Beeston near Nottingham. David has been a photographic Judge for more than 30 years, and over the years has been heavily involved with the North East and Midlands Photography Federation (NEMPF). Holding several positions including Chairman and for the last four years he as held the position of the Judge and Speaker Secretary. Hence he is very well qualified both as a photographer and a Judge. In the role of Judge and Speaker Secretary he is responsible to ensure that the Judges and Speaker who are registered with NEMPF are capable of fulfilling the rolls within the guidelines. In doing so hopefully improving the standard of Speakers and Judges being asked by Camera Clubs who are members of the Federation.

David gave the Axholme Camera Club members the talk titled “Guidelines on Being a Judge” this was followed by a session on questions and answers from the floor. There was no shortage of questions a sure sign the subject and the talk was very well received.

David retired from his job with Sky-B-Sky in 2012 and has been spending time doing more photography plus entering more exhibitions both in the UK and Over Seas. In doing so he has had success and increased the number of acceptances and awards for his photographs.

At the end of the meeting Individual members gave their thanks for an interesting talk but the vote of thanks was given by Vice Chairperson Chairman Roberts who expressed the feelings and gratitude of the Club and its members.

Wintertime, time to change.

Dear readers,

Time literally turned back as daylight savings come to an end along with the British summer. But, while many motorists relish the chance to sleep an hour longer, there are potential dangers that come with the changing of clocks and increased darkness.

Motorists need to adapt their driving behaviour to accommodate for night driving conditions as the clocks change. Night falls an hour earlier, so the typical commute home from work or school will be in the dark. Night conditions make the road ahead more difficult to read and yield less information for a driver. Other road users, road signs and objects are harder to see and road conditions and edges become indistinct. Driving at night at this time of year will also be aggravated by seasonal driving hazards – rain and wind.

As night draws, people also naturally want to slow down and are more likely to grow tired. One in five motorway crashes are fatigue related.

It is also important to consider vehicle condition when driving in dark conditions. Windows (inside and out), mirrors and the lenses of lights and indicators should be kept clean regularly to give the best possible visibility. Lights must be correctly aligned and adjusted for the vehicle load – and bulbs must all work. Now is a good time to renew your windscreen wipers and top up the washer bottle with a good quality detergent.

Leaving the lights on at work or the shops will drain a car battery very quickly. It’s easy to forget to switch off lights when leaving the vehicle, and an already depleted battery will be less forgiving.

Check the battery is healthy or renew it now before being stranded on a wet and windy roadside.
