A challenge has been thrown out to local youngsters to produce a Christmas Carol, which will then be performed at a special service to be held in December.

It has come from Epworth‘s Old Rectory – which is now an internationally renowned museum as it was the childhood home of John and Charles Wesley the founders of a movement that went on to become the Methodist Church.

Charles Wesley was the most prolific hymn writer of all time with some 6,000 published and a approximately 3,000 unpublished and it is one of his best know Christmas Carols - Hark The Herald Angels Sing – that is at the centre of the challenge.

For youngsters can either rewrite the words and use the same tune or keep the words and write a new tune.

The competition is open to youngsters in two age categories - seven to 11 and 12 to 18 – and entries can come not only from schools but from organisations including Brownies, Guides, Cubs, Scouts and other youth groups.

Entries need to be a minimum of two verses and not exceed five verses – the length of Charles Wesley‘s original hymn – and must be in the manner of joy or praise for Christmas.

The winning entries will be performed by the winners at a Carol Service to be held at the Wesley Memorial Methodist Church in Epworth on Wednesday, December 7th. In addition, there are prizes on offer with the first prize in each category being a tour of the Trax FM‘s radio studios and the second being a tour of the Old Rectory with refreshments.

Closing date for entries is Friday, November 11th, and a full set of rules, teachers‘ resources and application forms are available from the Old Rectory‘s webpage at epwortholdrecetory.org.uk or from the museum‘s curator –Rev Claire Potter – on (01427) 872268.

The Epworth Men’s Society started its new season of events with its 54th annual dinner on Monday (Oct 3) night, with some 50 members attending the event at Belton Pavilion.

Guest speaker was historian and publisher of some eight books on the Isle of Axholme, Colin Ella.

However, his speech was on humorous epitaphs gleaned from headstones from throughout the world. ―Many would simply not be acceptable in our time but most told the truth about who was buried there. They could be cruel, kind and even witty – like one found on the headstone of a snooker player ‗He‘s Taken The Long Rest‘- but many were a lot harsher than that,‖ said Mr Ella, who went on to entertain members with numerous other epitaphs.

Members were taken by coach to and from the pavilion, where they enjoyed a three course meal prepared by Epworth based caterer Sandra Bishop and free lager or bitter all night.

The Society‘s next event is in November and will be a talk entitled ‗Secret Wireless World War Two‘. Anyone wanting further information on the Society is asked to telephone Ken Bickerstaff on (01427) 872288.

An Epworth pub is about to host its fifth fund-raising event of the year in aid of the Lindsey Lodge Hospice-Saturday November 19th It is the Old School Inn on Epworth‘s Battle Green, where an evening race night is to be held to raise money for the Scunthorpe based hospice. ―So far this year we‘ve raised more than £1,800 with all events we‘ve held,‖ said Karen Curran, who runs the popular pub with her partner Mitch Mitchell. ―These events have included a family fun day, a fancy-dress golf competition, a disco and a beer festive,‖ she added.

There is free admission to the race night and there will also be a pie and peas supper available – again with all the profits going to the Lindsey Lodge. ―The night‘s all for a good cause, so we‘re hoping for a good turn out,‖ stressed Karen.

At the November meeting Paul Learoyd, who is the Chief Executive of the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust, will talk about the work of the Trust and give us an update on the state of Wildlife Conservation in Lincolnshire. The Trust already looks after about 100 nature reserves in Lincolnshire, six of which are here in the Isle of Axholme, which cover many habitats including woodland, meadows, and heathland. He will be showing us some of these places and the animals and plants which are found there and explaining the work the Trust does to look after them. He will tell us about the way in which opportunities may arise in the future to allow the Trust to continue to make a difference for wildlife in the County. This will take place on Thursday November 3rd at 7.30pm and everyone is welcome so do come along and join us, you do not have to be a member.

Epworth Christmas Market will take place in the Imperial Hall Epworth on Friday December 2nd at 12 noon. It is in conjunction with the switching on of the Christmas Lights and Santa's visit in Epworth Market Place at 6.30 pm. The stalls at the Market will include Tombola, Cakes, Preserves, Sweets, Bran tub, Christmas Crafts, Plants and table decorations, Games, Mulled wine and seasonal refreshments. .

There will be a Christmas raffle (for Christmas hampers) and this will be drawn at the end of the Market around 7pm. All proceeds of the Market are in aid of St Andrew's Church, Epworth.

Allan Rowsell will be entertaining us at our December meeting with photographs taken on his visits to California. Allan is a well known local photographer so, with his many wonderful images accompanied by music and tales of his travels, means we are in for a treat. This will take place on Thursday December 1st at 7.30pm so put this date in your diaries.

All our indoor meetings are held in the Stephen Jones Hall at the rear of the Methodist Chapel, Low Street, Haxey on the first Thursday of the month and everyone is welcome. There is a small admission charge of £1 and there is a raffle and refreshments.

Don‘t forget that bird food is always on sale at our indoor meetings and at Geoff‘s house in Belton, at very competitive prices, just ring if you need anything. Women’s Institute (WI) Report The October meeting was held on the 11th in the Red Lion as usual. The topic for the evening was felt making with Alison who keeps a herd of Alpaca and uses their fleece to make felt, then utilises that felt to create all kinds of items from hats, to scarves and bags. She gave us a brief overview of different felt making techniques, and then started us all off on making a small item using needle felting. A good selection of small items was actually made in the short time available, with varying degrees of success. A vote of thanks was offered to Alison for her expertise and the use of her equipment.

The craft group met at the end of September and each lady present made a small trinket box. A good session with lots of pleasant chat, coffee and cakes, and a pretty, useful item as the end result. The next meeting of the craft group will be 25th October when we will be looking at paper crafting, sharing ideas and techniques to begin making Christmas cards. A trip out to a craft show is also planned for November.

The next meeting of the WI is on the 8th of November at the Red Lion, beginning at the normal time of 7-45. New members welcome to both groups. Non-members of WI will be welcome to join the craft group.

AXHOLME CENTRAL POLICE REPORT Carrside Sport Facilities, Carrside, Epworth – Criminal Damage, including Arson, anti-social behaviour, youths causing annoyance ands cars congregating in the car parking area.

The facilities at Carrside are used by over a 100 young PC Constable 1169 Police Constable 1839 Police Community people of various ages, and includes the Epworth Colts Sally Jameson Tina Starbuck Support Officer 7577 football teams. It is ideally situated and easily accessible with Stewart Pearson car parking off the main road but this locality also suits those with the intention of causing disruption to the facilities at the site.

In recent times the site has suffered from cars congregating during the hours of darkness causing anti-social behaviour, arson attacks on the changing room facilities, burglary and criminal damage to facilities within the changing rooms, Litter and debris is left lying about. These type of offences then cause unnecessary inconvenience to those law abiding people who value the site and the opportunity to play sport. The building is currently having a major improvement which both the police and those involved in using the facilities do not wish it to have any further disruption caused. The crimes that have been committed in the past cannot be allowed to continue and the Neighbourhood team together with the fundraisers, those involved in the renovations and those who use the site will work together to seek that the negative actions of a few individuals ceases and allows those using the site to enjoy their sporting activities.

Anyone with information about those individuals who visit the site without good reason and who go on to commit crime and anti-social behaviour, the Neighbourhood team would like to know. Anyone coming to police attention will be dealt with positively.

UPDATE Although there have been no further issues raised at this time, we will continue to patrol and monitor persons on the field.

Stepping Stones Nursery, Epworth – Anti-social behaviour, youths causing annoyance and criminal damage.

Reports are being received that the building is being frequented by youths and there has already been some damage caused. The building is in a quiet area and thus is attractive to youths congregating. These premises are adjoining to the car park, church, and play area and as such make it a particularly favourable. Neighbourhood staff and incident response officers will be making patrols in the area and any youths found on these private premises will be dealt with accordingly.

UPDATE;- Neighbourhood staff have regularly patrolled the area and have engaged with a lot of the young people who frequent the car park area who on the whole have been well behaved and respectful. There has been reports that some youths have been favouring Sunday evenings when there are people practising bell ringing in the church.

This is not acceptable and any information regarding those responsible should be forwarded to the Neighbourhood team. Those individuals who are involved should cease this type of behaviour before being caught as they will be dealt with.

Man caught with cannabis = A man was recently caught by PCSO‘s smoking cannabis in a public place in Epworth.

He was searched by police officers and found to be in possession of a further small amount of cannabis bush. He received a warning and the drugs were seized for destruction. Off Road motorcycle seized = A male was caught red-handed driving an off road motorcycle on the public highway. After admitting he did not have the relevant documentation to do so it was seized and will be destroyed. Drugs seizure = A car was recently stopped in Belton and the occupants searched. They were found to be possession of class A drugs, were arrested and bailed to court. A further search of their property revealed drugs totalling in excess of £10,000. Cable Theft fiends = Officer on night patrol caught sight of a vehicle containing electricity cable near to Sandtoft.. They requested it to stop however it failed to do so. It made off into the South Yorks area however despite their best efforts to evade police, and with the help of a helicopter, 4 males were arrested for the theft. Suspicious males nicked = Police received a report of a suspicious vehicle in Epworth. Investigation by response officers revealed that a car had been broken into. This shows the value of information we received from the public.

The Isle of Axholme

AGRICULTURE IN THE 19th CENTURY (continued from last month) The enclosure of the commons together with some warping helped to increase the amount of arable land in the Isle. The farmers followed a sort of rotation. According to the famous late 18th century – early 19th century agriculturist, Arthur Young, the rotation in the Isle consisted of corn, potatoes, flax and beans. Cobbett, the well-known writer, said of the Isle of Axholme: - “ When I first visited the isle of Axholme in 1787 it was „Dame and Porridge‟ and the farmers were doing well. On my next visit it was „Misses and broth‟ and they were doing worse. I now find (1819) it „madam and soup‟ and they are going headlong to the devil”. Arthur Young said of the farms in the Isle; - “A farm of 20 acres can support a family very well as generally speaking they have no fallow, but an endless succession of corn, potatoes, hemp flax and beans”.

The hey-day of hemp growing was in the 17th and 18th century when it was extensively grown and used for sacking, canvas and heavy linen goods. The farmers were advised to “sow after wheat, plough before Christmas, manure after first dressing, a middling dressing, plough again between Christmas and Lady Day. Plough 3 or 4 times, roll and harrow, sow about the middle of May. Pull the male hemp or Femble about August 20 th, but leave the female till Michaelmas. Bind the Femble in sheaves and cart into dykes, rod it, water it.

Leave it for 2 to 3 weeks. Spread it on stubble for 3 weeks or so till the bast clears away from the bun. Turn it once or twice and when dry bind it into beats, carry home and stack it and work it”. An average crop was 30-35 stone; the price in peacetime was 22 and half pence or 25 pence a stone or 35 pence a stone in wartime.

By the 1850‟s the growing of hemp had declined dramatically.

Even by 1801 hemp was grown on less than 10% of the land. At this time 15% of the land was under temporary grasses, 25% wheat (33% in 17 th century), 10% barley (50% in 17th century), 20% oats, 10% potatoes and the remainder comprising of flax, hemp, beans, rope, turnips and carrots.

In the 19th century potatoes became a major crop in the Isle. They grew extraordinarily well on the best warp land so that farmers were tempted to abandon their varied rotation and settle into the growing of potatoes and wheat in alternate years helped by high potato prices.

Warp land produced very good crops and still does. Farmers through the ages near rivers have found the land fertile with a layer (up to 25 feet thick) of alluvical mud left by the floods. The nearer the river the thicker the veneer of mud. This type of warp land is called „Top land‟ or Old going land‟ and stretches up to a quarter of a mile from the river. As the rivers have had levees built to prevent floods so the natural warping effect has disappeared. Artificial warping was developed whereby the river‟s high tide water charged with mud was led off down warping drains and off to fields to settle. The local Post Office used to operate in the large house on the right.

Later in the 70‟s when in the occupancy of Fruit & Veg wholesaler Harry Maw, he and business associate Arthur Snipe ran the Side Saddle in Austerfield, celebrities came to Low Burnham as Harry‟s house guests. These included, Shirley Bassey still an international singing star, Billy Cotton the bandleader and comedian Alfred Marks.

Remember Remember...

My youngest nephew was born on November 5th and a right fire cracker he turned out to be! As he approaches his 18th birthday, he has ordered timed fireworks for the best party ever for friends and family.

The only problem is what to do with the family dog during this jamboree!

Just a few days later, Her Majesty the Queen will lay a wreathe at the Cenotaph in London and similar ceremonies will take place all over the world, including villages on the Isle of Axholme. We will pause at 11am on the 11th day of the 11th month to remember all those who have died or been in injured in the two World Wars and conflicts ever since.

This year there is added pain for those who enlisted in the Armed Forces but have now lost their jobs.

Like many others they will have to ‗start again‘ and that may be very hard and difficult.

So we have much to remember in November. Many of us will remember Guy Fawkes with happiness and laughter on 5th November. I hope that we will also be able to share in the sadness and tears of the few war veterans who are still alive on 11th November and work out how to keep Remembrance Day special in the future.

November is a month of remembering. As children we may have sung

the ditty ‘Remember remember the fifth of November, its Guy Fawkes night,‘ and in our national life we have the formal events of Remembrance on the eleventh day of the eleventh month, and this year it is the eleventh year.

Remembering on a daily basis is important to us.

We remember to put the bins out, to lock the door at night and so on. On an annual basis we remember to send a card on birthdays and anniversaries-or perhaps we might forget. On a national level it reminds us as to what has been and tells us who we are.

To those of an older generation than mine remembering has a special context, but to those of my own we might recall and remember and give thanks for special past experiences. It tells us what has been, and encourages us as to what we are yet to be. +

In November tokens for us of remembering are the fireworks and bonfires, poppies too, --but we will also have our own personal tokens too.

Epworth Primary School News Letter Epworth Fireworks on Saturday 5th November The Friends of Epworth is again organising the Epworth Bonfire this year (with the Showground Committee and Epworth United, who have their pitch on the showground). It is to be held on Saturday 5 th November, gates open at 5:00pm, bonfire to be lit at 6:00pm and fireworks at around 6:30pm. Entrance is £4 per adult, £2 for 12 and under, and free for 5‘s and under. There will be food vans, children‘s rides, sweet stall, flashing lights stall and a bar. It was a great success last year and raised much needed funds for the school. It promises to be bigger and better this year!

We hope lots of families around the Isle will be able to join us.

Harvest Festival On Thursday 13th October we held not one but two Harvest Festivals in school. In the morning the Festival was led by our Year 6 children in class TH who showed that HARVEST is really all about SHARING. In the afternoon we held a joint Festival with our Reception children and pre-school children from Stepping Stones.

In both events the children bought in Harvest produce from home – we had a magnificent display of hundreds of tins, dried food packets, fruit and vegetables. We even had potatoes grown by our very own Gardening Club in school. The Year 6 children then made up 60 harvest boxes to give to Senior Citizens in the village. These were much appreciated.

Fencing is a modern Olympic sport taking it's origins from the time when swords were carried as part of everyday dress and combat was not unusual. The modern sport has three disciplines Foil, Epee and Sabre. The Epee is perhaps the origin of fencing, the target is the whole of the body and the first fencer to ―Touch‖ scores a point. Foil is derived from Epee and was originally conceived as a training weapon for real combat, the target for foil is the torso. There is also a rule of priority which encourages the fencers to recognise when they are being attacked and defend themselves. Finally the sabre unlike the other weapons is a weapon of cut and thrust.

The Target for sabre is from the waist upwards.

Here on the Isle of Axholme we have access to a successful Fencing Club which has been in existence for over 10 years. The Isle of Axholme Fencing Club Meets at West Butterwick Village Hall on Wednesdays from 6.30pm to 9.30pm. Over the preceding years Club Fencers have gone on the represent both the county and the Region and fenced in many Open Tournaments. Our Veteran Fencers compete on the world stage. Currently the Veterans European Ladies Sabre champions in the over 60 years and over 70 years are both Axholme members. We have several recreational fencers who take part in the sport ―Just For Fun‖ the spin off is it keeps them in shape.

The Junior section caters for 8 year olds upwards and trains until 8pm. The adult section meets at 8pm.

Kit is provided for all beginners whatever age and size and beginners are most welcome. The club is very keen to introduce new faces to the sport and is coached by Dave Jerry who is an Advanced Coach and a Member of the British Academy of Fencing.

Belton All Saints Church of England Primary School We have had an excellent start to the new school year and have been pleased to welcome new families and staff to our school.

As a starting point for this terms work pupils in Year 5 and 6 had a visit to the Victorian Workhouse in Nottingham. Pupils had a wonderful day, dressed and in role as children who actually spent time in the Workhouse in the 19 th century. They experienced the harshness of the schoolroom and the living accommodation and learnt about the lives of some of the workhouse‘s inhabitants and managers. The visit has really sparked an interest in the Victorian Era and pupils are now building on this experience with research in school.

Keeping with the Victorian theme, we were pleased to become involved in the Festival of Flowers and Victorian Life at all Saints Church here in Belton. Art and History work by pupils, and artifacts and photographs linked to Victorian activities from school, were on display including the school Log Book dating back to 1870. Year 4 pupils spent a morning with volunteers at church experiencing the exhibition at first hand and enjoyed activities such as brass rubbing, playing with Victorian toys, Morse code, broomstick crocheting and country dancing.

Two-way Roads With Three Lanes Dear readers, Britain‘s dangerous three-lane roads have been much improved with the addition of cross-hatchings and solid white lines. Double white lines must never be crossed and keep drivers going in one direction in two lanes and those in the other direction to one lane (there are exceptions to this rule. See the Highway Code) On some roads, particularly on hills, a solid white line is paired with a broken white one. This normally gives the uphill traffic two lanes (so that slow traffic has a ‗crawler‘ lane) and faster downhill traffic just one. However, where the broken white lines are on the side of the single lane, traffic in this lane is allowed to cross the line for an overtake where it is safe to do so.

While the markings are clearly defined, you should always take care and maintain excellent observation on three lane roads, as other drivers may not have your appreciation of the driving system.

Cross-hatchings separate potentially dangerous streams of traffic and drivers should know which ones can and which ones can‘t be driven on.

Cross-hatchings bound by a solid white line are there to separate carriageways or the approach to a motorway slip road. They should never be driven on unless there is an emergency or the police direct you to go there.

Crosshatched areas surrounded by a broken white line are used to separate traffic on some roads, which at some point may have had three lanes. You may enter these areas where you can see it is safe to do so.

These ‗hatchings‘ usually appear on roads with high accident rates. Take extra care when overtaking not to surprise other drivers who are not expecting anyone to drive in this cross-hatched zone. Refer to the Highway Code for more detail.

Dual carriageways are among Britain‘s most demanding roads, because, while the speed limit is the same as a motorway (70mph), there are many more potential hazards to deal with.

For example: Bicycles, mopeds, and tractors can use dual-carriageways, there is no hard shoulder for broken down vehicles, side turnings may not have slip-roads, vehicles can emerge from lay-bys and traffic can join or leave through the central reservation.

Pedestrians are even allowed to cross the carriageway! Drivers in the right-hand lane may have to slow down when turning right across the central reservation. Learner drivers can drive at 70mph on dual carriageways.

Axholme Camera Club News The Guest Speaker this week was Mr Richard Egan who had travelled from York in order to show the members his very impressive array of images. Richard was made a Fellow of the Royal Photographic Society in 2004 with a panel of Portrait Photographs. He explained that it took him a period of four years to get his FRPS and it was not an easy journey, having to Employ the services of sixty (60) individual models in the process. However, it was the members of Axholme Camera Club who had the benefit of seeing Richards outstanding images.

He put his success down to first of all the planning, knowing what he wished the end photograph to look like before he took the picture. Get as much as possible correct in the camera and do very simple alterations in the computer to achieve the end product. Richard not only had some great images on show but also had a very amusing style of portraying his descriptions to the audience.

Although Richard had given up his time to come to Axholme he asked for his fee to be made payable to the Cancer Research. He said that his pleasure was taking photographs and helping other to achieve satisfaction when taking pictures. Richard has agreed to revisit the club sometime in the new year and run a workshop in Portrait Photography.

The Selection committee have also met twice in the last week to select photographs for the following competitions. First the LPA Digital Battles which takes place on Sunday 30 th October at Nettleham. Secondly, (NEMPS) North East Midlands Photographic Societies, this is an individual exhibition but the club can nominate a selection of four images from the members entries. And finally the Australian Challenge.

This is the first competition between Axholme and our twinning club Castle Hill RSL Camera Club in Sydney Australia. A special web site has been set up to host the images and will allow the judges from both sides of the world to access them and mark each image out of 15. This is split into 3 areas, Technique, Composition and Impact, allowing 5 points for each section. That means each image will be judged out of 30 marks, 15 from each judge. The UK Judge is a Mr Ray Brammall FRPS DPAGB a very experienced photographic evaluator. The Australian Judge is Andrea Robinson AAIPP, AFIAP, AAPS. Andrea is a professional Photographer with her home in Queensland, a very nice picturesque place to live.
