There is a flower festival with a twist at the end of May. For full details see page 25. Carrside playing field, Belton was purchased in 1981 as an extension of Epworth War memorial field. This allowed local sports clubs, such as football, hockey and cricket to have a purpose built ground for their teams. This is completely maintained by volunteers wanting to provide something for the community. Sadly due to lack of interest and the final football team folded last year the field is no longer in use. We keep the field maintained in the hope that we can encourage new use in the future. If anyone is thinking of setting up any sports club and is in need of a venue please get in touch with either Tony - 07971914352 or Gillian - 07711880863

Discover Doncaster’s heritage at this year’s Doncaster Heritage Festival, Saturday 4 – Sunday 19 May 2019. The 2019 Doncaster Heritage Festival will be launched on Saturday with two fascinating talks – Helen Cox asking the question who was the rightful king, Edward IV or Richard III? And TV historian, Michael Wood, talks about Doncaster’s connection to the decisive Battle of Brunanburh in AD 937, which triggered the making of a united England. Other Doncaster-focussed highlights of the festival, include ‘An audience with Brian Blessed’, Doncaster’s heritage ambassador comes home to CAST recalling growing up here and filming ‘Who Do You Think You Are?’ at Doncaster Archives.

In 2017 Heritage Doncaster purchased the Conisbrough Court Rolls, 12651935, and we have two full days of related events including a number of talks about how you can get involved with the HLF funded project, an insight into the Manor courts and their evolution through time, entertainment from the Doncaster Waites and many free events are being held throughout Conisbrough and Denaby Main.

Doncaster Market Place sees the start of the 2019 Tour de Yorkshire and to celebrate Doncaster’s cycling history, local broadcaster and author, Chris Sidwells talks about Doncaster’s cycling legends including Tom Simpson, a local lad who was the first Englishman to wear the yellow jersey. The festival has an exciting programme made up of a series of enthralling talks, workshops, walks and events that explore the history of the borough and beyond. Events will be at a variety of different venues and location from morning to evening, so why not discover something new? The festival is organised by Heritage Doncaster and is supported by heritage groups across Doncaster for the enjoyment of all. Community News Epworth Music Day 2019 News

Belton Bowls Club

With less than 2 months to go before this year’s Epworth Music Day on Saturday 22 June, we’re putting the final pieces together for another great day of celebrating live music. In the daytime there’ll be over 80 hours of free music from 10am to 5pm in 13 venues around Epworth, featuring over 50 different groups and performers of all types of music. All this is free.

The Monday indoor bowling will be coming to a close in April and the new outdoor season begins, running from May to September.

As well as the daytime programme, there will be 3 separate concerts in Epworth on Saturday evening to round off a stupendous day’s music and entertainment. Starting at 7pm there will be 6 different groups – again of all types of music – performing in St Andrew’s Church. At 8.30pm there’ll be a concert with 2 rock bands in the Queen’s Head, and at 9pm there’ll be a folk concert in Jinksy’s Bar in the Red Lion. In the Imperial Hall there will be an evening ceilidh. All 3 concerts and the ceilidh are free and no tickets are needed. Full details of the performers and the daytime and evening programmes will be available at www.epworthmusicday.com and will be available on the day. We would still welcome a few more stewards to help on the day – for however much time you can give. If you think you could help, please contact John Lambert on jrlambert@doctors.org.uk Epworth Music Day 2019 - it should be another grand day out! Spread the word!

1st Belton and Epworth Scout Group need you! We currently have 12 Beaver Scouts, 10 Cub Scouts, 11 Scouts, 2 permanent Leaders and several parent helpers but would you be our Scout Leader please? We meet from 6.40 pm until 8.10 pm at Belton Pavilion every Tuesday evening during term time. Programme and admin. support would be available from the permanent Leaders as well as training, (if required), which is provided centrally by the Scout County of Humberside.

The club is open to everyone of every age, catering for people of all abilities. All new members will be made very welcome and if you have never played before do come along and give it a try. We have friendly “roll ups” on Saturday afternoons at 2pm and you don't need any special equipment or clothes, just some flat shoes or trainers. We have bowls which you can borrow and members who will give you assistance so you can just turn up and have a go. Like all the local bowls clubs we play in several leagues as well as having friendly club competitions. We have a lovely green behind Belton Pavilion (on the playing field at the rear of the village shop) and a beautiful conservatory that we can use for watching the bowling and having refreshments. Do come along and join us. For more information contact Deek Tate on 875724

A VIP week at Epworth Old Rectory Tuesday the 26th of March saw the arrival at The Old Rectory in Epworth of the Youth President of the Methodist Church in Britain, Miss jasmine Yeboah, who was shown round the Rectory by Ms Gillian Crawley, the curator and manager. Jasmine was in Epworth to help publicise the launch of a new book, "From a Mother's Pen," a collection of prayers and writings by Susanna Wesley edited by Charles Wallace. The book will be released at the beginning of May. Jasmine told me that her presidency is for a period of one year and her role is to be the voice of the young people within the Methodist church. She attends annual events such as conference and Council meetings, and visits the sites such as the rectory as well as visiting church groups all over the country. She has taken Courage as her theme for the year. She explained that this was not just about being brave in difficult circumstances, but in helping to build confidence in, and empowering them to express their Christian beliefs. As she so succinctly put it, "being Courageous in, and for, Christ." Wednesday the 27th of march was even busier with a host of national and international trustees of the Rectory arriving for the dedication of the newly decorated room in the Rectory, based on the life of Susanna Wesley and her family here in Epworth. Jon Byers, one of the American Trustees led the dedication service asking for blessings on the work done at the Rectory, and the volunteers who work there, which was followed up with one of Susanna's own prayers in which she says that religion is not to be confined to church alone but should continue into one's whole life. Also present were Bishop Ivan Abrahams, General Secretary of the World Methodist Council, and Sarah Friswell, the Chair of the Rectory Trustees along with around 16 other trustees. All who were there admired the new decor and the way the artefacts were displayed to show episodes in Susanna's life. This was a very good day for special visitors as the Lincoln Diocesan Pilgrims came to us at lunch time while the trustees were still holding their meeting. The Pilgrims had a look at the newly dedicated room and heard a little talk on the contents then adjourned down stairs to Susanna's kitchen where they were regaled with the story of how she educated her children in that very room, and led the way for women lay preachers by preaching sermons and bible study to approximately two hundred people from her kitchen, despite the rules that women were not allowed to preach nor should it be done anywhere other than in church. These two days took us from the early eighteenth century up to today with a continuing link from one highly educated, spiritual, strong willed woman, Susanna, to her modern counterparts with Jasmine, our trustees and manager to the women of the Pilgrim group, of whom at least two were ordained vicars.

Please do contact the Rectory for more information on how to visit, details of events throughout the year, and how to volunteer if you have a few hours to spare each week. Telephone 01427 872268, e-mail curator@epwortholdrectory.org.uk or our facebook page. Cath Fordham(Press Officer)
