News, News, News, New, News, News, News...

A year of progress was reported when Epworth’s Imperial Hall Committee held its AGM on Tuesday, March 25th.

Chair of the trustees, Denise Miemczyk, highlighted some of the achievements made during the past 12 months, with particular reference to the Hall’s ongoing refurbishment and modernisation programme aimed at turning it into one of the most attractive community-hire venues in the Isle.

The rolling programme of repairs and renovation to the Hall has been made possible by a numbers of factors, including the generous and continued support from Epworth Town Council and local businesses and grant funding from Leader, Wren and the National Lottery.

“However, it is without doubt the dedication, commitment and hard work of each and every member of the team of trustees that has not only ensured that the hall has remained as the centre of our community for another year but that our ambitious improvement programme has continued to drive forward,” said Mrs Miemczyk.

“This year brought a new series of challenges as we tackled what I think may be our biggest project to date, the extension and refurbishment of the backstage area,” she added.

The hall, which is a registered charity, is run by committee of 11 volunteers, including two representatives from Epworth Town Council.

Mrs Miemczyk added: “In additional to the tangible changes to the fabric of the building we have plans for the forthcoming year to refit the kitchen in the main hall, fit a sound system and repair the old Louvre window – to name but a few.”

The audited accounts were presented by treasurer Martin Whittaker and showed that for the year ending up until December, 2013, the local facility had ended up in a comfortable surplus.

An open day later in the year to provide the opportunity for invited guests and members of the general public see the recent improvements for themselves.

They are still a concern to The Neighbourhood Team, so still Please ensure you keep your home secure at all times locking windows and doors. Also keep keys and expensive items out of sight and consider security lighting around the outside of your property and light timers inside your property. If you are going to be away for any length of time, let your neighbours know so they can also keep an eye on your property.

This year’s Belton Barrow Race takes place on Sunday 8th June! We’ve gone early to avoid the World Cup, so there’s no excuse not to enter! The races will start from The Crown Inn. Race schedule is as follows: 1.30pm – Veterans (over 50s) 2.15pm – Adults 3.00pm – age 14-17 years old 3.45pm – age 10-13 years old 4.15pm – age 5-9 years old 4.30pm – adult and child 4.45pm – Winners presentation for all races The adult and child and 5-9 year old races will be around the field behind the Crown Inn, with the 10 -13 year olds racing around Churchtown. The adults will cover the full route beginning from The Crown Inn, to the site of The Steer Arms, down the High Street, Jeffrey Lane, King Edward Street, Westgate Road to The Wheatsheaf Inn then back up Carrhouse Road and back to The Crown. The veterans (age 50 and over) will cover the same route excluding Jeffrey Lane and King Edward Street, and the age 14-17 race will follow the veterans’ route but will miss out the Steer Arms.

The tradition of Belton Barrow Race, dating from a wager around 1950 that it was possible to push a man in a wheelbarrow over the course of 3 miles, drinking a pint of beer at each of the 5 pubs passed on the route, was revived last year. The pubs may have dwindled to two, and some of the beer replaced by water but the race is still a challenge and fun is guaranteed!

It costs over £1000 each year to hold the race, with insurance, risk assessment, first aid and prize money amongst the total costs, and we are grateful to everyone who supports our fundraising over the year to keep the race going, and to Belton Parish Council and North Lincolnshire Council for their ongoing support.

There will be stalls available and if you are interested in having a stall on the day of the race, please contact Sue on 01427 873978 or 07525088396.

If you are interested in entering any of the races this year, application forms have gone out with last month’s Arrow, but can also be found at Londis and Nisa (garage) in Belton or enter on the day.

Barrows are provided, you will just need a team of 2 people prepared to take it in turns pushing or riding in the barrow.

This year’s prizes will all be cash prizes and there will also be a prize for the best dressed barrow you don’t need to race them!

If you are thinking of coming along to enjoy the atmosphere but not entering a race, please consider helping us out as a marshall, and you will receive £10 as a thank you! You will have a full safety briefing. There are many other jobs to do so if you can spare a little time on the day or beforehand we would love to hear from you. The May meeting of West Butterwick and District Gardening Club takes place on Monday 12th May at West Butterwick Village Hall at 7.30pm. The speaker is Tony Featherstone with ‘Gardening seasons....Tasks to do during the year’. This is the second Monday in the month due to May Day. Members £1, non members £2. Everyone is welcome - all ages and all levels of gardeners. The June meeting will be held on Monday 2nd June and is a talk by Janette Merilion entitled ‘Gardening on Walls and Fences’.

World Walk Week is the 10th to 17th May. Walks will be taking place all over the world to raise money for charities . THE MEANING OF ‘NO’ In a recent news article educationalists and specialists in child development were reported as listing ten things children should be able to do in preparation for attending school. Some of the activities were (I hope) obvious, and you can probably guess these for yourself. It included children being able to dress and undress, tie their shoes, go to the toilet, and eat by themselves. Perhaps you may think these are straightforward and common sense, daily living functions- qualities for life. They are. One of the ten was different in that it was “to know the meaning of the word ‘no’.”

It seemed to me this was quite different, and I can think of a number of adults who still l do not know the meaning of the word ‘no’. As a teenager the word ‘no’ suggested that this should really be a ‘yes’ and why was it older people were trying to stop me doing it. Today to one friend of mine, the word ‘no’ does not exist in his vocabulary.

One of the sayings we sometimes hear is “Life is like photography: we develop from the negatives.” This was true for the people of Israel as we recall through the Ten Commandments and the familiar words: “Thou shalt not.”

At Easter Christians see God saying ‘no’ to selfishness and wrong, through Jesus dying on the cross and rising again, and ‘yes’ to love and life. Perhaps we all need to know the meaning of ‘no’,- in preparation for life.

METHOD Mix dry ingredients, rub in butter, add egg & lemon. Roll out and bake in a moderate oven in a sandwich tin, until golden brown for about 30 minutes.

Now & Then - Then & Now No 61 by Anthony Catherall

This month and every month see Epworth in bygone days and compare to today's images!

Sixty-one years ago, August 1953, Lawrence Lambert purchased No. 66 High Street Epworth. along with 3 of the 7 cottages alongside and to the rear, from former sweetshop owner Mrs Rands and daughter Brenda, for ÂŁ2000. He became the postmaster, assisted by his wife Annie. They rented out their cottages to, Mrs McFeat, Miss Newell and Jack Hodgson. They ran it for 26 years before selling it on to Alan & Ellen Hall. In 1995 Alan & Kathy McCauley became the owners continuing the P.O. business until 2004, when Clair Beharrell took over, several years later passing it on to current postmaster Richard Haley, who I previously knew, from his former Post Office, in Beckett Road, Doncaster. The above postcard was indeed posted from this Post Office in 1973.

Next door at No. 68, the Maxfield family had run their butchers business since the second decade of the 20th century. The business eventually finished in 1979, when grandson Peter, changed career to engineering. Both are listed buildings, along with 13 others in the High Street. Published in 1963, The Isle of Axholme Rural District Councils report No.25/63, described them thus: No.66, 18 century, with later front wall. Colour washed brick, pantiles.1 storey & attics, Dutch gable to street with shop window surmounted by moulded cornice with large consoles, 2 first floor windows - 1 original flush sash, I modern casement, both with flat arches.

No's 68. Early 19 century. Red & yellow brick, pantiled roof with dentil brick cornice. 3 flush sashes with flat arches, 2 storeys. Later R. H. shop window. Below the businesses operating today, 25 February 2014.

Two very vibrant young women, Lisa and Emily, gave an extremely powerful presentation to the members of Epworth and District W.I. at their April meeting. They were representatives of the Alzheimer's Society in the area and were introduced by Tracy, the group's new president.

In a presentation lasting less than one hour the group were involved in assessing their own understanding of dementia, working through a simple activity and examining the thought processes involved and then had an explanation of how people suffering from dementia might respond.

Emily and Lisa are Dementia Friends Champions, whose job is to raise general awareness of the condition which will make life easier for those with dementia. Their five key messages which the group could not fail to have understood are: 1. it's not a natural part of growing old 2. it's caused by diseases of the brain 3. it's not just about losing your memory 4. it's possible to live well with it 5. there's more to a person than dementia After the two ladies were thanked and departed business of the evening was discussed. In this article I look at how you can control some of the summer pests and diseases on your trees.

If you have carried out your pruning to allow good air circulation and light penetration into the tree, the free air movement will help to keep diseases to a low level. Similarly, the removal and burning of dead and diseased material is important in reducing pest and disease levels. This should be done as frequently as possible.

You might set up a habitat in your garden which attracts and provides a refuge for beneficial insects and birds that feed on pests.

Using insecticides or fungicides should probably only be used to control insects or diseases which get out of hand. Using them annually does not encourage the tree to develop and maintain its own immune system.

Codling moth This can be a significant pest and I suffer from codling moth on a number of my apples. The adult moths lay their eggs on developing frigates and on foliage. The lava borrows down to the core of the fruit, leaving a red – ringed entry hole in the side of the fruit or near the eye. On cutting open an affected fruit, the small pinkish larva may be seen. After about 4 weeks, fully grown larvae vacate the fruit which may or may not drop to the ground.

Try to reduce the number of suitable overwintering sites of the larvae by removing any loose bark and other damage to the tree or nearby. In the middle of May you can put up pheromone traps in the trees.

You can buy these at garden centres. I use one about every 12 feet. The sticky surface traps moths. You remove the traps at the end of the season. I have found them useful but not the complete answer.

Powdery mildew You can see shoots infected with mildew since they carry very small and narrow leaves covered with grey white matter. Flowers may be small and fail to open. New affected shoots appear pale grey in colour. Any fruit that grows may not be badly affected.

You should prune out any infected growth before the trees come into leaf and either burn or remove them is from site.

In the next article I will look at some more pests and diseases.

The Trentside Federation – School News from St Martin’s and West Butterwick Church of England Primary Schools As we all enjoyed getting ready for Easter at the end of the Spring Term, remembering the Easter Story and rejoicing at our Easter Services held at both schools thinking about Jesus’ resurrection. St Mary’s was filled with some beautiful singing, with one piece led by Mrs Elliott (Class 2 teacher) who has a beautiful singing voice. St Martin’s youngest pupils also had an opportunity to meet an unusual creature that is connected to the Easter Story Honor with Mr – a cockerel that crowed three times. Our Reception children at Grumpy who Owston Ferry received a surprise visit from ‘Mr Grumpy’ who she has raised belongs to Honor in Class 1. The whole class enjoyed this since he was a experience and had many questions during the session that was chick led by Honor’s mum.

‘Mr Grumpy’ tucked into his favourite corn feed, amusing the children with his messy eating habits!

Honor’s mum explained that all roosters have a ‘comb’. The children also learned that the red skin hanging below Mr Grumpy’s head is called a ‘wattle’ and this helps him to keep cool.

Honor has looked after Mr Grumpy since he was a chick. Honor told the class “When he was born he was really grumpy, but I just cuddled him and looked after him - now he isn’t grumpy at all!”

Class 1 at St Martin’s also had another special visitor - a policeman. This visit was linked in to the Reception pupils reading the different stories from the Usborne children’s book “Jobs People Do” which includes a wide variety of different professions.

This book provided a fun starting point to learn about different occupations and what people wear to do them. When it was time to change the role play area in our Early Years Setting at St Ben who is Martin’s there was a huge vote for a police station and jail! Luckily enjoying being a there was just enough baking foil left over from the previous role policeman play area (a rocket) to make some sturdy looking iron railings to keep those robbers behind bars! The children have really enjoyed some first-hand experiential learning this term and are now enjoying acting out some of what they have learned.

Class 2 at West Butterwick has had a busy term. It all started off with a big question ‘Is There Anybody Out There?’. In response to this question the pupils engaged in working with a local artist Martin Maywood, producing some ‘space pictures’ and learning about and trying out some of Martin’s experimental and unique techniques! In Design Technology, the children enjoyed designing and making their own aliens, some of which were edible! The end of term was a cause for celebration as a team of pupils from West Butterwick participated in the Scunthorpe ‘Wake Up and Shake Up Festival’. All were proud of being awarded a commendation for their performance at the Baths Hall in Scunthorpe.

Well done!

We are now looking forward to the start of the Summer Term, especially since we have planted some new crops in our large planters. We shall keep you updated on how these are coming along over the coming months. We hope that, once again, we may enjoy some delicious home made soup with our home-grown vegetables!

WATCH OUT BELOW Drivers tend to ignore all but the most basic of road signs. A red light will still (thankfully) get most drivers to stop, most of the time. But a junction marking stating “STOP” in large capital letters is often ignored; at best it will be treated as a “give way” and then only by the locals who know the dangers well, but still opt to downgrade the risk in order to save a moment or two.

This may be because we all suffer from “signage overload”: there are so many instructions, official and unofficial, and so many direction signs and road signs competing for our attention that we already have our head full of information coming at us at eye level. That makes it easier to miss the ones painted on the tarmac beneath us.

Road users often seem totally unaware of the relevance of road markings, even when they see them.

But as a rule of thumb, the more paint there is on the road surface, the more potential danger there is. Nobody has chosen to go to the time and expense (not to mention the considerable risk) of putting paint on the road without a reason.

Sadly even experienced motorists seem to be ignorant of the markings. I was recently told that a double white line down the middle of the carriageway was there to “stop us turning right across it.”

This is worrying, because those particular markings are there for quite a different purpose: to prevent vehicles crossing onto the other carriageway at that point.

Some cross-hatchings are no-go areas (those that have a surrounding solid white line). You should not use these areas unless it is a serious emergency or you are directed there by a police officer.

As well as the official marking on the road surface, there are the unofficial ones that can also serve to remind the observant driver of potential danger.

The classic these days is the long, snaking skid mark.

That means some unfortunate has had a crash, or a near miss, or certainly taken drastic action for some reason.

When you see these, ask your self what might have happened, and see if there is anything you can do to prevent getting into the same situation.
