Isle Group of the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust News On Thursday May 3rd at 7.30pm Chris de Feu will be telling us everything there is to know about slugs and people who have already been to this workshop have said that it is very interesting so don’t be put off by the title. To many people slugs are just pests that should be destroyed but perhaps there is another side to them, do they have a purpose? There are several different types of slugs and we are asking those who come along to bring some with them if possible. We look forward to seeing you and your slugs on May 3rd. This is our last indoor meeting before the summer. We restart the indoor programme on October 4th.

There will be a guided walk around Crowle Moors National Nature Reserve on Saturday May 19th.

We will meet at the reserve at 2pm. If you are not sure how to get there you can ring Geoff Trinder on the number below or look on the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust website for information on Crowle Moors. There are brown road signs to follow from the M180. It is advisable to have sensible shoes and insect repellent. The walks are open to anyone so do come along and find out more about this fascinating, unique place. We hope to see you there.

Another successful year was reported when the Epworth Men’s Society held its AGM at the town’s Mowbray Arms pub on Monday (April 2) night. Members had enjoyed

numerous trips, speakers at their monthly meetings and the organisation had ended up almost £300 in the black in the year, Chairman Society – Barry Briggs – thanked members, and especially those who serve on the committee, for their support. He singled out Social Events Secretary Dave Hayes, who organises the visits members undertake, for a special mention.

Trophies were presented to various members from a games night held earlier in the year. Dave Turner retained the Chester Cup for dominoes, Eddie Mellers won the overall Championship Cup and the Michael Tyack Cup for whist, Bob Berry won the Claude Baines Cup for darts and Mike Harm the Atkinson Cup as the best runner-up.

Under rules introduced last year the current Chairman Barry Briggs and Vice-Chairman Eddie Mardell each serve a two-year term of office. Other officers elected were: Minutes Secretary Roger Callam, Treasurer Mick Ford, Press Secretary Eddie Mardell, Speakers’ Secretary Ken Bickerstaff, Social Events Secretary Dave Hayes and Games Secretary Stuart Taylor.

Society events in the coming months include a brewery trip and a guided tour of the Old Hall at Gainsborough. Anyone wanting further information about the Society is asked to call Ken Bickerstaff on (01427) 872288.

Safer Neighbourhoods and members from Youth Services have been visiting the areas and engaging with the young people to identify concerns and alternatives to prevent any further disruption to the community. The matter has also been raised at the Neighbourhood Action Team to seek whether there are any other partner agencies that can assist with this issue.

Reports include theft, burglary non-dwelling and suspicious person(s) including some with dogs, criminal damage and off road bikes on private land in the main belonging to farmers.

With the lighter evenings upon us we must all be vigilant to prevent any opportunity for those intent on committing crime. When thinking of making your home burglar proof, think like a burglar; look for the weaknesses at your address. Simple things like is your front gate open? Is it broken? What are the locks like on your property are they better/worse than your neighbours? No burglar is going to make more work for themselves. Have you signs saying ‘beware of the dog’ these can indicate you do not have an alarm also other signs indicating pets reside often indicate no security inside, also that there may be doors or other means of entry used by pets which a burglar can facilitate. Once inside they will make preparations to avoid being caught in case the occupier returns. Also what have you written on your calendar – does it show how long you are away on holiday? At the dentist till when? Etc… Humans are creatures of habit and keys, handbags mobile phones, l-pads, laptops are usually kept near the door, all quick and easy for the thief to take. Have you listed property that is precious to you including keys, take photos or video footage of each room, but do not leave the footage on a computer or camera. There are many web sites that you can look at for crime prevention and take an interest in preventing you and your property from becoming a victim. A new nationwide single on-line property search system for the UK Law Enforcement agencies is the NMPR which you can view on the web and read fully on how you can access and register your property. For the first time it allows the police to search any identifiable item of property to view its registered owners details, if it’s been reported stolen to the system by the police anywhere in the UK, by the owner, insurance company or in the case of a mobile phone, a network. Further information regarding this system will be advertised in the near future.

Now that the lighter evenings are here and we like to stay outdoors longer I would ask that the community bear in mind their sheds, outbuildings and garages are an advert of what is held inside when they are left open whilst working outdoors. THE AXHOLME JOINT RAILWAY (continued)

The first sod for the Goole and Marshland Railway was cut on 22 September 1898 at Eastoft. On July 20th 1899 the first sod for the Axholme Railway was cut. It was made into a great occasion. Epworth was decorated with flags, banners and streamers and over various arches were inscribed such phrases as “ Long looked for”, “Progress and prosperity”, “Coming at Last”, “Patience Rewarded” and “Success to Agriculture”. A grand procession wound its way through the town led by the Goole Band.

Several thousand people were present at the ceremony. The day was marked as a public holiday. In the evening there were sports and fireworks.

Medals were presented to children of Epworth as a reminder of the historic events. On the medals were the words “Manus justa nardus” – A just hand is balm.

Construction work on the Marshland Line started in February 1899 and by January 1900 it was open to trains. The Axholme Railway was progressing at both ends. By June 1900 the line was completed north from Crowle to Reedness and east to Eastoft. By June 1901 the line had been extended from Eastoft to Luddington and Fockerby. Meanwhile the southern section was progressing well. On the 25th November 1901, four hundred people watched the first engine (named ‘Epworth’) cross the bridge over the road into Epworth Station. The engine was decorated with flags and an archway had been erected over the line bearing the words “Success to the Work”. In 1902 work started on the swing bridge over the Kennet and Keadby canal south of Crowle together with the viaducts over the drains, road and railway nearby. This section of the line cost about £40,000 and 3,000 men worked on it. The swing bridge and adjoining viaduct was 300 feet long and was the main engineering achievement of the railway.

Every Sunday evening in the nineteen seventies and eighties the top twenty chart hits were announced on national radio.

During the following week customers rushed along to a shop called Setlten in Church Street Epworth the proprietors being Jean & Gordon Whitehead. Being the only record dealers in the Isle, Setlten was popular with many who could buy their favourite chart hits on vinyl 45's (forty five revolutions per minute) along with others called LP's (long playing records at thirty three revolutions per minute) alongside other favourite pop and classical records. Setlten also sold lots of interesting books (a lot by local authors) coupled with a wide range of stationery, a thriving Epworth business. In 1987 Jean & Gordon moved over to Albion House at 6-10 Albion Hill to carry on their popular business now to include bed & breakfast. In 1991 however, many local booksellers countrywide were affected by relaxation of the then government's Net Book Agreement, this dissolution allowed big supermarkets to cut the recommended retail price (rrp) allowing them to sell books below prices that local book retailers paid their wholesalers. However Setlten continued to flourish with many other products until retirement beckoned for Gordon and Jean in early 2011.

Incidentally, Setlten is an unusual name, with a fascinating story behind it, another time another place.

HERITAGE TILE EVENT This event held on 24th March was a resounding success with 170 persons attending. Many young people came along with their parents and had their photograph taken holding the tile they had produced at school. Mrs Lister, Head Teacher South Axholme Academy) came along and admired the work of South Axholme pupils along with that of all the local primary schools.

Tiles were also to be seen having been made by representatives of local community groups and individuals, Janet and Len Latham were on hand to answer any queries. It is hoped to install the tiles within the Church in a few months on completion of the internal works.

The picture shows the tiles laid out on the floor of the Ivy Andrew's Hall with a garden table in the centre to represent the font. One of the proposals is to lay the tiles around the font.

TOP DRAWER THINKING I was reminded whilst reading an old book of the expression ‘ top drawer’, meaning the choicest and the best. It was an expression I used to hear very often, but now not so much Top drawer behaviour or conduct is the best that can be expected, and a top drawer product the best one can find. I was also reminded of the expression ‘top drawer thieving’, not about the homes that are robbed, but rather meaning those who move swiftly through a house looking only at the top drawers because that is usually where the choicest belongings are. I hope you have no personal experience of that.

In our egalitarian society it is not fashionable to talk of top drawer society, but we probably understand the saying, that some are or think themselves to be the best. I will refrain from giving an illustration.

When we celebrated Easter we remembered the fact that God sent Jesus for all, top and bottom drawer, and as it were all the drawers in between, even some say with positive discrimination for He came as Christ to save the least and the lost.

The Trip of a Lifetime Her Majesty the Queen is embarking on the trip of a lifetime as she tours Great Britain during her Diamond Jubilee year. Numerous people are going to have the trip of a lifetime as they are privileged to carry the Olympic flame throughout the land – even if only for a few hundred yards each. Athletes and tourists the world over are planning their trip of a lifetime as they plan to descend on London for the Olympic Games.

The Watoto Children’s Choir are also on a trip of a lifetime. As they tour the world, singing their hearts out and wowing audiences everywhere they go, their tour will eventually end and other children will take their place to form the next choir. The children we welcome on 3rd June to All Saints Church will eventually return to a more simple life back in Kampala. Teams have gone out to build classrooms but they are very different from our schools. May I invite you to come and be ‘Watotoed’ on that Diamond Jubilee Day? There are no tickets and no entry fee. The concert begins at 6.30pm. There will be jewellery and CDs for sale and an offering will be taken. Listening to the choir for an evening will send you on a trip of a lifetime!

Watoto Choir Watoto Chidrens' Choir from Kampala, Uganda are coming to Belton and will be giving a concert on Sunday 3rd June at 6.30pm in All Saints' Church. The choir will be staying with families on the Monday and then leaving for Bradford on Tuesday 5th June. This will be the third choir that we have hosted and I am sure they will be as brilliant as the previous ones. There are 22 children aged 7 to 16yrs and 10 adults. It is the weekend of the Queen's Jubilee and will be one way of celebrating that so please tell your friends and neighbours and invite them to come to a memorable evening of song and dance, Ugandan style.

Entrance is free and there are no tickets so first come first served for the best seats!!!

There will be an opportunity to give to the work of Watoto Child Care Ministries during the concert and, those of us who were privileged to visit Uganda in 2008, can testify to the amazing work that is done for orphaned children with the help of our money.

News from Belton All Saints Church of England Primary School Maths Week To end a busy Spring Term, pupils and staff thoroughly enjoyed participating in our annual Curriculum Week. This year the theme was ‘Mathematics across the Curriculum’.

On Monday, we all joined in with the activities provided by the Happy Puzzle Company. The games were challenging and lots of fun involving the pupils in working collaboratively to solve the puzzles. At other times during the week pupils moved throughout the school, with older and younger children working together and supporting each other as they explored and enjoyed their maths. Children could be seen measuring their cake ingredients, making scale models of Anderson Shelters, programming bee bots robots, counting in French, timing athletic activities, creating musical rhythms and symmetrical patterns. Numbers were investigated and 3d shapes built. Every area of the school was bustling and it was great to see the children smiling as they focused on their tasks. We celebrated the end of the week with a final assembly during which we shared and reflected on our achievements.

TRENTSIDE FEDERATION – St Martin’s and West Butterwick Church of England Primary Schools – School News West Butterwick school had 'an artist in residence' (Shaun Clarke) for two days on Monday 12th March and Tuesday 13th March to work with the children on three dimensional art. The Juniors studied 'form' and proportion, using this term's book 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory' by Roald Dahl to create their figurines. The children produced Oompa Loompas, Grampa Joes, Willy Wonkas and the range of characters who won the Golden Tickets! The children are now quite familiar with the properties of clay as a medium - a number of them attended the clay workshops run by Shaun last Summer on our Training Days. The Infant pupils continued with their naturebased studies, when working with Shaun, drawing inspiration from birds nest to consider how a range of other materials, such as twigs and straw, could be added to clay in order to strengthen it and create new properties. The children were very interested in the history of wattle and daub! We hope to work with Shaun again in the near future.

St Martin’s pupils have been getting involved in Owston Ferry’s plans for the Diamond Jubilee. This is not until June, of course, but the preparation starts now! The school ran a competition for a Jubilee Logo judged by Diane Ekins and Merv Storrs from the village’s committee. Congratulations to the overall winner – Madison Allcock. Madison’s logo will now feature on all of the village’s official correspondence linked with all of the planned celebrations.

Driving in the Countryside continued Dear readers, On a smooth, satisfying, traffic free drive in the country, it’s easy for even the experienced driver to go too fast. The simple rule you must always apply: can you stop within the distance you can see to be clear ahead? Always be prepared for the worst-case scenario, whether that’s horse riders, cyclists, oncoming vehicles overtaking a slow-moving tractor and trailer, a broken- down vehicle or even a farmer with his herd of cows. Rural road surfaces can hold any number of surprises for the unobservant and unwary driver. Loose gravel, mud, wet leaves, potholes, raised drain covers, deep puddles, extreme cambers, slippery road surfaces, fallen tree branches, debris from farm machinery.

Good drivers on the other hand, are always ready to encounter hazards around the next bend and alter their speed and line accordingly.

Always remain a safe stopping distance behind other vehicles, If someone is driving too close behind you, allow extra distance from the vehicle in front of you, as this will give you a longer braking time. Allowing this extra time will keep you safer, your brake lights will indicate that you are slowing and this will give the driver behind you the extra time to react to the situation. If you are following a large van or lorry, drop back a little to gain a better view around them.

Epworth Primary School News Our Sponsored Child This year the School Council has decided to sponsor a child in a developing country through World Vision. We are sponsoring Allan, who is six years old and from Uganda. The children are organising fund raising events to pay for the £22.80 sponsorship needed each month. As well as going to help Allan, this money also helps the whole community. So far we have raised money with a copper collection, a cake sale and a poster competition.

At the end of last term, we received our first letter from Allan which was very exciting to read. The School Council will now be writing back to him.

Commonwealth Week The whole school took part in a special Themed week last term to celebrate Commonwealth Week. As well as learning about the Commonwealth each class studied a country in detail.

Countries chosen included Australia, India, Canada, South Africa, Jamaica and Kenya. Then in a Special Mention Assembly children from each class showed some of their work. Lots of excellent work was shown including posters of Jamaica and India, Polar Bear pastel work from Canada, written accounts of Nelson Mandela’s life from South Africa and Aboriginal style art work from Australia.

Easter in School Last term finished with our traditional Easter Egg decorating competition. Parents were invited to vote for their favourite entry from each class and the winners were announced during our end of term service at the Wesley church. The standard of entrants was very high and we had lots of worthy winners.

Long, long ago, in a dense forest there were thousands of tall and beautiful trees. They were happy, but proud of themselves. Among them there also an ugly tree whose branches were badly twisted. Its roots had uneven curves. All the trees made fun of that ugly tree.

“How are you, hunchback?” the other trees always shouted and their laughter made the ugly tree feel sad. But, he never raised a voice against them. The ugly tree thought, “I wish I were as beautiful as the other trees. Why did God do this to me? Neither can I provide shade to the travellers not can the birds make their nests on me. Nobody needs me.”

One day, a woodcutter came to the forest. He took a look at the trees and said, “These trees are lovely. I must cut them.” As soon as he picked up his axe the trees became frightened.

‘Chop, Chop, Chop’ went the woodcutter’s axe and one by one the trees started to fall.

“None of us is going to be spared,” screamed one of the beautiful trees. Soon that tree too was brought to ground by the woodcutter’s axe.

By now, the woodcutter had come near to the ugly tree. He had just raised his axe when suddenly he noticed how crooked the ugly tree was. “Hmm! This crooked tree seems to be useless for me. I cannot make long straight logs of this ugly tree,” he thought. And he moved towards another beautiful tree. The ugly tree heaved a huge sigh of relief. He realized that by making him ugly, God had actually given him a boon.

From that day the ugly tree never complained. He was happy with his crooked branches.

He never forgot how he was spared from the woodcutter’s axe, only because he was crooked and ugly.
