Welcome to the Epworth and Belton Arrow The Arrow is a great source of information, not only for you to find a local tradesman, but to find local groups too. So check out the back pages for details of local groups. If you run a club yourself, make sure your details are still up to date. If you know of any groups need adding or removing please be in touch too. It would be great to see more content from the villages so you can let everyone know what's on in the area! If you would like to advertise your local business please be in touch. Advertising starts from as little as £30 + VAT per month. The April issue deadline for adverts and content is Wednesday 13th March. The Arrow will be delivered by the 1st April. Enjoy your read.

Isle of Axholme News ‘ISLE PLAY IT’ music group was started in EPWORTH in 2018. We are a group of adult musicians from early level ie beginner through to more advanced. Our group caters for those who have started playing, just getting back into playing after a break or those who wish to improve their skills. If you can play a few notes on your instrument and read a bit of music, you will fit in here! We also welcome more advanced higher grade players to help others along and boost our sound. Above all, we enjoy our sessions and have a laugh when we meet on Thursdays 1:30 till 3:00 - term time in EPWORTH IMPERIAL SMALL HALL. We have a wide repertoire of pieces from classical through to modern day. You name it, we will try to play it! Sheet music is emailed out to players. Just bring along your instrument and a music stand. If you are interested in joining in with our happy band, please contact Fiona on 07960 262110 or Message us through the Facebook page ISLE PLAY IT MUSIC GROUP High Levels WI January meeting The first meeting of the new year was held on 17th January, the third Wednesday of the month which is the usual meeting night. Members and visitors were welcomed before John Armson from Humberside Fire and Rescue Service was introduced. His talk was on Life Support and Heart Resuscitation. John gave the members a resume of his experiences in the service. Then he began, with the help of a short film, to explain that intervention by the public can often “buy time” in cases of emergency until profession assistance is available. John showed short clips of the film and then enlarged on the actions by telling us of scenarios in which he had been involved. He gave details of actual emergency situations in which anyone could find themselves and reinforced how anyone can help. The incidents covered were people experiencing heart attacks, sudden collapse, severe bleeding and choking. He then demonstrated how anyone would use a defibrillator and gave information about where to locate one. John was an excellent speaker and although many members have been participants in First Aid

courses or have nursing experience it was excellent to have a reminder and hear how interventions have been updated as medical practices develop. The evening continued with refreshments and members were reminded of forthcoming outings to the theatre and a local restaurant. During the brief business part of the evening members were reminded about voting for the Resolutions put forward nationally. The March meeting (20th) will be a talk and demonstration on Canal Art given by Stuart Garfoot. Do look at our website and visit or join us if you think we might suit you. I recently spoke to someone who said she had read of our activities in “the Arrow” and thought we sounded interesting. We meet at 6.45pm at the Reindeer at Sandtoft. I’m sure you would find us friendly.

Helen will be joined by Harriet Santon, who works for the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust and particularly works on the conservation strategy of the Humberhead Peatlands, which also includes Crowle Moors and Epworth Turbary. We meet at Belton All Saints Centre (Church Hall), Stocks Hill, Belton, DN9 1PE Everyone is welcome, you don't have to be a member of the Wildlife Trust so please come along and join us. Did You Know Epworth Men’s Society is Now Open to New Members? The Epworth Men’s Society was formed in 1950 and has had regular meetings ever since, enjoyed by an average of over 40 regular attendees. After almost folding in the aftermath of the Covid lockdowns, the society was resurrected through the efforts of a small group of committee members, has successfully arranged full programmes for 2023 and 2024, and is now looking to recruit new members to help carry it forward into the future. The group provides an opportunity for men to meet and share mutual interests, enhanced by a programme of interesting talks in an informal atmosphere, usually over a pint or two! Meetings are held on the first Monday of each month from October until April at 7.45 pm. usually in the upstairs meeting room at The Red Lion Epworth. Amongst the annual regular events are a quiz night in January and an indoor games night (darts, dominos, cards) in February. Other meetings usually have a guest speaker on an interesting topic. Once or twice a year we arrange outings to local places of interest. There is also an annual dinner, again with a guest speaker. Membership does not entail any form of commitment and subscription is only a nominal £5 per annum (you are welcome to attend a couple of meetings free while you make your mind up!) Simply contact any one of those on the list below, who will be happy to answer any questions you have about the group or just turn up and try it for yourself. Epworth and District Flower Club On Thursday, 11th January the majority of the membership of the Flower Club enjoyed a meal at the Old School Inn in Epworth. The venue was different from previous years as the membership of the club has increased so much. Anne Everatt, the Chairman, wished everyone a Happy new Year as the evening began. Then much chatter and laughter ensued as the ladies enjoyed their meals. At the end of a pleasant evening thanks were expressed and members were reminded of the next meeting which would be the AGM. As everyone departed into a cool winter’s night so many people said how they enjoyed the friendly atmosphere and the variety of activities undertaken by the group. Maybe you would like to join us? We meet on the second Monday of each month at 7.30 in St Andrew’s Church, Epworth. Some of our forthcoming events are: March 11th: a flower demonstration entitled “A night at the movies” given by Sue Hodgson April 8th and May 13th : visiting demonstrators. Other planned activities are workshops and inhouse demonstrations. We sometimes have plant sales and always have refreshments and delicious nibbles. Give us a try

1st Isle of Axholme BP Scouts February 2024 Scouts and cubs have made the most of the milder few evenings to be out and about. Scouts, having finished their signaller badge were set a project challenge to make a stand to hold a pot of water over an open fire. They had to design models and practice lashings before making a full scale model using 8ft poles and testing it, outdoors. All 3 patrols were successful! We have also completed our ICT badges, finding out about the inner workings of a computer, and all the components both inside and out the main unit. We also made sure they could all use basic word processing, spreadsheets, publishing and email programmes. In March we will be welcoming a team of students from Lincoln University who will be coming to train us in a media project – watch this space! The cubs have enjoyed a night hike looking at navigating by starlight and finding how different everything looks in the dark. They worked hard to make bridges for a challenge project, all alongside lots of games. We have all also been preparing for Founders day (sometimes known as Thinking Day) March and Church service where we get to showcase what our scouting year looks like and some of the activities we do. Scouts and cubs have been practising their lines and choosing their favourite photos in preparation. All are welcome. We parade from the youth hub, near the Memorial Hall in Haxey at 10:15am and then enjoy a service in church. This year we will be celebrating on Sunday February 18th as the nearest Sunday to Baden Powell’s birthday. Beavers section will soon restart - please get in touch if your child (aged 5-8 years) would like to join us this Term. Sections all meet at the Westwoodside Village Hall: (Cubs, Scouts and Senior Scouts) meeting on Monday evenings 6pm (Cubs), and 7pm (Scouts & Senior Scouts), and Beavers (tbc) probably on a Tuesday evening at 6pm (from September). Remember, we are still looking to recruit more Beavers leaders/ helpers for this section. Please get in touch if this is something you would like to do.

All enquiries about Scouts or Beavers should go to Gregor on: gagibb79@aol.com, 22 Please mention “The Arrow” when responding to advertisements and Cub enquiries should go to Matthieu at: matthieu_maloigne@mentor.com.

Isle of Axholme Community Network – Loneliness and the digital divide A group of residents, club, and organisation representatives across the Isle of Axholme meet regularly to find ways to alleviate loneliness and social isolation. Anyone living or working in the area can attend to explore this issue and work together to find solutions. Groups and clubs are a great way to meet likeminded people, but some miss out because information is only available online. The Arrow is a great source of information, so check out the back pages for details of local groups. If you run a club yourself, make sure your details are up to date. Listen out for news on local radio stations, such as TMCR FM to hear local stories and friendly voices. You can listen on the FM radio frequency 107.5.FM in the Epworth and surrounding areas, and 95.3 FM in the North East Doncaster area, if you can’t access the station online. https://tmcrfm.org/ We know that there are lots of people that simply don’t want to access online information, no matter how the world is changing, but we also know that there are many that would if they could. Perhaps you want to learn how to video chat with loved ones, find a walking group, or make a health appointment. You might want to find a new knitting pattern or renew your Blue Badge. There are lots of ways to learn in a fun and relaxed way, like Crowle WI members who help each other to develop digital skills. The Shed on the Isle - monthly Digital Drop In - second Saturday of the month shedontheisle.co.uk Community Cuppa, Haxey Youth Hub - every Friday 9.30am-11.30am. Free use of computer and internet access. 1:1 coaching and support available for those wanting to get online, brush up their skills or just get some help filling in online applications. Age UK Lindsey volunteer Digital Champions who can help you get online in your own home. www.ageuk.org.uk/lindsey Try your local village hall for groups where you can learn digital skills. Contact emma.mottershaw@hwrcc.org.uk at Humber & Wolds Rural Action to find out how to turn your village hall into a digital hub. ONGO - contact carol.richardson@ongo.co.uk for details of digital skills sessions in your area. North Lincolnshire Council Community Hubs - access to computers and staff happy to help. These are just a few examples of support available, so if you provide digital support in the Isle area, join the conversation by attending the next Isle of Axholme Community Network meeting on Wednesday 27th March, 7pm, venue to be confirmed.
