Plans are well on their way for Rescue Day 2019. Make a note in your diary for this fabulous event, Saturday 13th July! Haxey Dramatics are holding their yearly comedy production. A must to see. The play is full of humour, pathos and sentimentality and will leave you laughing and crying, probably at the same time. Full details on how to buy your tickets are on page 23. Enjoy the read and please note the deadline for the April issue is Thursday 14th March for distribution by the 31st March. If you are interested in advertising or simply emailing me some community news, please be in touch before the date.

ROYAL AIR FORCE LINDHOLME Adapted and Edited for publication by Anthony Catherall acknowledgement to Margaret Draper A year later the station was concerned with another international crisis when, in June 1961, four Hastings took part in a transport support operation in the Kuwait crisis by flying ground crews and freight for two Javelin squadrons at Royal Air Force Nicosia. This crisis was a sharp reminder of the country’s overseas commitments, commitments that would in the future have to be met by an all-regular Royal Air Force. Lindholme still had national servicemen at that time but the last one, No 5081948 Senior Aircraftman Parker L C, left the station a year later on 24th October 1962. A short informal ceremony was arranged to mark his departure; a departure which signified the end of an era. The next few years were to see additional units arriving on the station. No 721 Mobile Signals Unit left Mothwold where it had been parented by Royal Air Force Feltwell, in October 1963, and became installed (if that is the correct term for mobile units) on the airfield at Lindholme. Its full title is No 721 Mobile Radar Bomb Scoring Signals Unit. Its work consists of scoring, by means of radar, the accuracy of crews in the ‘V’ force squadrons who carry out simulated bombing runs on selected targets. In connection with the Bloodhound missile programme, a large radar installation was built adjacent to Lindholme manned by No 21 Missile Wing. In 1962 this system became obsolete and the Missile Wing was disbanded. Its accommodation was taken over in January 1963 by a unit using the call sign “Humber Radar and carrying out trials in Air Traffic Control Radar. After a year these activities were placed on a regular basis and in January 1964 the Royal Air Force Lindholme but under operational control of Fighter Command, through the Military Air Traffic Organisation (MATO). In June 1966, its name was changed to Northern Radar. My photograph of the Radar Installation building adjoining the A614 January 2016. Northern Radar is a joint military and civil unit which controls all air traffic from coast to coast roughly from North of Birmingham to South of Middlesborough, and over the North Sea as far as Dogger Bank. Amongst other things, the control covers the upper and middle airspace, airways crossings and centralised approach to selected airfields.

The immediate controlling unit of Northern Radar is Headquarters MATO (Northern Region). This Unit arrived at Lindholme from Royal Air Force Weeton in December 1964. It is responsible for the efficiency of the four Air Traffic Control Radar Units north of Birmingham, including one in Northern Ireland, the two ATC Centres at Preston and Prestwick, and an ATC Area Service Unit. Its purpose is to co-ordinate the use of airspace in the northern region and to ensure the safe and efficient use of it. Thus, when the amalgamation of Bomber and Fighter Commands took place in 1968, Lindholme already housed unitsArrow” from both Commands and was well prepared to face the 6next decade Please mention “The when responding to advertisements under the control of Strike Command.

North Lincolnshire Trade Watch

What is Trade Watch Trade Watch is a voluntary scheme where residents will not agree to any work offered to them on the doorstep and they will report any suspicious company to Humberside Police. The scheme will protect members of our communities and act as a deterrent to potential rogue traders and criminals in the same way Neighbourhood Watch does. Residents who sign up will receive scheme window sticker, information packs and street signs are available for villages who sign up. Living in a Trade Watch area will reduce the risk of being approached or becoming a victim of a doorstep crime and send a clear, proactive message to residents and criminals that such crimes will not be tolerated within North Lincolnshire. Community News Epworth & District WI Report Twenty-five ladies met for the February meeting which was the AGM preceded by a fascinating talk given by Peter Frost from the Epworth Mechanics Institute. Peter set the scene by explaining the origins of the Mechanics Institute, the philosophy behind the society and how it gradually evolved. Through some dedicated research Peter was able to link the creation of the Epworth WI, back in 1917, with articles from the Epworth Bells archive. This was just 2 years after the WI started in the UK in 1915, and followed a visit by a Canadian lady, Miss Guest, to Epworth. The meetings were reported in the Bells and the first meetings included talks about poultry, meat-free meals, the use of the hay box in cooking, spring cleaning and beekeeping. A number of the ladies attending the meeting hadn’t visited the Mechanics Institute and so it was extremely useful to learn that it holds not only reference books, but also thousands of fiction books. One of Peter’s passions is also tracking down books and helping people with local history enquires. Peter’s anecdotes were wonderfully interesting and informative and he received a very enthusiastic vote of thanks. The March meeting involves reflexology. Visitors are welcome to attend and a small charge of £3 is requested. Further details are available from the Secretary, Ann, on 07747103805

Epworth & District Flower Club The February meeting of the Epworth and District Flower Club was the A.G.M. held in the Stephen Jones Community Hall, Haxey. As last year the Club was able to celebrate the success of the Open meeting, held annually in November. In 2018 the members hosted Andrew Grisewood, a National Demonstrator who titled the evening “Unwrap the Season”, a prelude to the Christmas festivities. The proceeds from that enjoyable evening and the proceeds from a coffee morning held by a club member enabled the Flower Club to make a donation of £1500 to The Alzheimers Society. As the society was unable to send a representative, a large cheque for publicity purposes will

14

be displayed and photographed with two key members at the next meeting. A legally sized cheque will be sent to the society. The current chairman, Anne Everatt, was able to give a very pleasing report on the year’s activities and she thanked sincerely all who had supported the Club in any way at all. Anne made reference to all members and highlighted that everyone plays a part in the smooth running of the club helping to make it very successful. The usual reports were also received. The programme secretary informed the members of the coming year’s programme and she also thanked members for their support. Some discussion ensued on suggestions for future activities, particularly for outings as in the past there have been some summer visits to gardens and places of interest. It was recorded that we had lost a long standing member and friend of many, Margaret Tune, and it was agreed to make a donation to Diabetes UK in her memory. It was later agreed that the Flower Club should adopt Diabetes UK as the charity to which we will make donations in the coming year. The officers were appointed and there followed some positive an amicable discussion about ongoing finance before we enjoyed a quiz, raffle and refreshments. The coming year’s programme includes an Easter workshop, members’ workshops and demonstrations by area demonstrators. The next meeting will be held as usual on the second Monday of the month, March 11th in the Stephen Jones Community Hall in Haxey. On that occasion we shall welcome Joan Woodhead, an area demonstrator, who will create arrangements on the theme of “Picture This”. Although our usual start time is 7.30pm it was agreed to precede this meeting with the presentation of the publicity cheque so members are asked to arrive for 7.15pm. We finish at approximately 9.30pm after most meetings by which time we have anticipated winning a raffle prize and enjoyed refreshments. We are always ready to welcome new members. Would we suit you? Come and see.

Best Education Within 75 Miles. South Axholme Academy in Epworth have done it again with current examination results putting them 2nd best nationally compared with similar schools. GCSE results from Summer 2018 mean that South Axholme Academy is the place to be. Compared with other schools who have a similar ability level on entry in Year 7, South Axholme Academy adds more value, gaining results for its students placing them 2nd best nationally, (see www.compare-schoolperformance.service.gov.uk ) and is top of the performance tables for the whole of North Lincolnshire, Doncaster and Gainsborough, and you have to go as far as Bradford for a school that compares favourably.
