ROYAL AIR FORCE LINDHOLME Adapted and Edited for publication by Anthony Catherall Acknowledgement to Margaret Draper Hitler gave immediate permission for reprisal attacks against London and this relieved the pressure on Fighter Command airfields. These Berlin raids were by no means the sole reason for Hitler’s decision but they were an important factor. (1) One has only to refer to any of the histories of the Battle of Britain to realise that the decision to switch the attacks to London lost the Battle for Germany. As a result Hitler lost his chance to invade in 1940 and with that he probably lost the war too. Although the threat of invasion had receded the Bomber Command Squadrons continued to attack the enemy’s territory. But it was not all one-way traffic. Lindholme itself suffered its first recorded enemy attack on Sunday afternoon in October 1940. “At 1750 the aircraft (a Heinkel III) carried out a sudden attack and dropped four bombs on the aerodrome … on the return run the aircraft dropped two bombs amongst the station building. The SSQ and one Barrack Block were hit and damaged. AC2 Head was fatally injured and AC2 Meakin seriously injured”. (2) Squadron Leader L G Huxford, the Station Armament Officer at that time recalled the raid: “We had three 20 mm cannons for defending the airfield against possible airborne invasion. G/Capt Waring and myself visited the railways at Doncaster and arranged with them to convert one of our lorries into an armoured vehicle for carrying one of the cannons. The remaining two were placed one either side of the airfield control tower. Shortly after this, the three cannons together with many .303 defence guns were taken from us. Guns were urgently required for installing on merchant ships. When our aircraft were not flying, their guns were substituted for aerodrome defence purposes. Up to mid 1941 Lindholme was fortunately attacked only once. It was early evening and No 50 Squadron’s aircraft were bombed up and dispersed along the far side of the airfield ready for operational take-off. Without warning, there was a lot of machine-gunning from that direction. A lone intruder had arrived, and after attack, had headed off inland. Rose Brothers of Gainsborough had made an experimental gun mounting to my design to take four aircraft Vickers Gas Operated machine guns. This mounting was designed for fitting to an old type aircraft “Scarff” ring and was finished that very afternoon, but has so far not been tested, and was still in the workshop. It was quickly carried to a position outside the Armoury building, and as suspected the intruder returned from inland at a medium height. His identity was confirmed when a bombing correction was made during his run up to target. His run was made in line with (what was) the rather long straight road from the main gates to the HQ and OPS block. That four gun mounting had a good initiation and test. Four hundred rounds were pumped at him, whilst his gunner sprayed the camp with bullets as he passed overhead. One bomb hit the Sick Bay, and another a Barrack Block. He flew on, appearing unharmed (much to my disappointment) but he did not get back, for he came down in the North Sea. The fighters claimed him. He had riddled a number of 50 Squadron aircraft and put them out of action for the night’s operation. That night we had the job of demolishing his unexploded bombs, which he had presumably dropped too low, when attacking the dispersed aircraft”. (3) (1) (2) (3)

Community News St Nicholas Church, Haxey “RINGING REMEMBERS” On 11 November 2018, 100 years since Armistice, bells will ring out in unison from churches and cathedrals in villages, towns and cities across the country. The beacon on Tower Hill will be lit at 7.00pm followed by the ringing of Haxey church bells at 7.05pm. To mark the final year of the First World War centenary commemorations, 1,400 new bell ringers will be recruited in honour of the 1,400 that lost their lives during the First World War. Church bells across the UK remained restricted throughout the course of the war and only rang freely once Armistice was declared on 11 November 1918. The campaign to recruit bell ringers, Ringing Remembers, will keep this traditional British art alive in memory of the 1,400 who lost their lives – linking together past, present and future. For Armistice 2018: Certificates and badges will be available for all “Ringing Remembers” learners. If you, or you know of anyone who is interested in learning to ring the St Nicholas church bells at Haxey for this event please get in touch with Haxey Tower Captain Angie Mackenzie 01427 753563.
Epworth and District Flower Club members met for their December meeting at their usual venue in Haxey and prepared for a Christmas workshop. As usual, with this demonstrator, all the necessary materials were provided and members were required only to find a seat ready to watch and then act! Anne Everatt, the current Chairman opened the meeting by thanking everyone for whatever contribution they had made to the very successful Open Meeting held in November. On that evening Jonathan Moseley had entertained many, many mostly local ladies with his skilful “Fabulously Festive” demonstration. The financial result was even better than previously anticipated and a cheque for £2000 pounds will be presented to the Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire Air Ambulance. A member of the Flower Club gave a vote of thanks to Anne and the committee for the hard work they had put in to

ensure that the evening went smoothly. Then the demonstrator began. She had a small cylinder with a piece of oasis already fixed and showed the members how to position a very tall candle in the centre. Next she hid the oasis with small seasonal foliage before adding three cream roses. Some gold “foliage” was added and some pretty, wired pearls and more artificial seasonal materials completed the arrangement. Then, just as the real professionals do, the demonstrator produced a second, smaller arrangement which was positioned alongside with the suggestion that the two could stand side by side on a charger or something similar. Over to the members! With a very happy buzz, members worked to create their own arrangements, quite suitable for a Christmas table decoration. Containers and synthetic elements were available in gold or silver and the roses were available in cream or pale yellow so the final results varied widely but all were extremely attractive. Some members were happy to add more foliage and others to add more festive “bling” using wired cones and glittery gold or silver leaves. The demonstrator was thanked and members cleared the debris and moved their creations to make space on the tables for an array of Christmas nibbles. Members had all taken a plate of festive food so, with an accompaniment of suitable punch, all enjoyed sampling a variety of savouries and desserts. This provided an opportunity for socialising and a very pleasant evening eventually drew to a close. By the time this reaches publication the A.G.M. will have happened and the cheque will have been presented to a representative of the Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire Air Ambulance meaning that the next meeting of the Flower Club will be held on Monday 12th March at 7.30p.m. It will be a workshop to which members need to bring nothing more than £10, (and their annual subscription!) If you feel like joining us do come along at 7.30pm to the Stephen Jones Community Hall in Haxey. We shall be pleased to welcome you and you can try us out before you join!

The Rotary Club of Epworth and Isle of Axholme held its usual event at the switching on of the Christmas Lights in Epworth and it proved very successful once again this year. It begins with the collection for re-homing of any soft toys looking for a new owner along with some lovely hand knitted toys. A wrapping evening prior to the event with pizza and wine made the task of wrapping over 200 soft toys in cellophane a very convivial one. The evening itself was very cold but lots of warm smiles and festive spirit made for a lovely evening and we raised £ 223.85 for Bluebell Wood Children's' Hospice. We are also hoping to raise more money for this very good cause from 'guessing the names of the teddies' in three hampers situated in the Salon, High Street, Epworth, The Queen's Head, Queen Street, Epworth and Axholme Decorating Centre, Albion Hill Epworth.
Diabetes Awareness Meeting – 16th March Following a very successful Dementia Friends meeting in January, thanks to the excellent response from an article in The Arrow, South Axholme Practice Patient Participation Group has arranged a meeting on Diabetes. The session is for people who have Diabetes or who may have relatives/friends with the condition and just want to know more and understand it. The meeting is on Friday March 16th at 6.30 pm in the Thurlow Pavilion, Station Road, Epworth and is free to attend. South Axholme Practice works hard with patients to prevent Diabetes through clinical support and advice. Many people in the South Axholme area have the condition and the PPG are keen to help the practice support these patients. The meeting is intended to help people with diabetes find out more about how to manage their condition. Diabetes can have a serious impact on a person’s life, but the right care can help people avoid serious complications. Often, when someone is diagnosed with diabetes one of the most difficult things to come to terms with is that it can be for life. Everyone reacts differently but it’s essential they work with their healthcare team to manage their diabetes safely and effectively. There will be a talk by a representative of Diabetes UK and you will also be able to meet with some of the team from South Axholme Practice who manage the care of those with Diabetes. Even if you do not have the condition, you are most welcome to come along and find out more about it. For further information or to advise you are attending please email saxppg@gmail.com

The Fitter family from Westbourne Drive have won the coveted Best Decorated House – The Brigley House Trophy. As a committee, we have had lots of lovely comments this year about how lovely the lights were – described by many as ‘best ever’ – which is heartening. However, we are a small committee of 6 people and if new people do not come forward there is a real danger that Crowle Lights could fold this year. Our Chair Jack Bower is stepping down due to work pressures. I am stepping down as Secretary due to a combination of reasons that leaves me little time. We also have several members who are not in the best of health. I would therefore like to appeal to our local community to step forward – or risk losing our great tradition. We need people who can help out at the odd event during the year, can give up some time in November for set up and January for take down – also people with committee/organisational skills (or who are office trained and can learn it easily).
