Editors Letter…

The Winter Olympics dominated my life in the run up to sending the magazines to print this month! First medal on snow, Jenny Jones, congratulations! And of course congratulations to every Brit who competed.

Particularly interest to me was Katie Summerhayes and Woodsy; both from Sheffield and both started their amazing careers at the Sheffield Sharks Ski Club; the slope where my kids learnt to ski. The slope was sadly destroyed by fire in 2012.

Staying on the sporting theme, Sport Relief is back from Friday 21st March to Sunday 23rd March.

The event brings the entire nation together to get active, have fun and raise life-changing cash. St Andrew’s Church Epworth Forthcoming Events Thursday 20th March at 7 pm. PRESENTATION EVENING - Speakers will be the Architect, Archaeologist, Chairman of the Restoration Committee and The Interpretation Facilitator. A discussion on the formation of a friends Society will be chaired by Mr Dennis Cozens. Light refreshments will be available.

Saturday 29th March from 10 am. SPRING FAIR there will be the usual stalls (raffle, cakes, preserves, tombola, books and refreshments.

Sunday 30th March at 7.30 pm. Concert by the Lyndsay Chamber Orchestra.

Saturday 5th April from 10 am until 12 pm Presentation of certificates to children who designed the heritage tiles. Children from South Axholme Academy who produced the animated DVD, along with pupils from Wroot Travis School who took part in the activity day are also being presented with a certificate. All welcome. Light refreshments will be available.

So Please keep us updated with any information, so that we can deal with those involved appropriately and positively.

Country Watch – We are in the process of looking at re launching the Country Watch Scheme and value any feedback from current members or any other land owners and what they would like from the Scheme.

Information Business Watch/CCTV, Epworth - There has been a positive response from local businesses joining this scheme and as such the Business Watch has now been launched, where hopefully we will be able to all work together to prevent crime and share information within the local area. CCTV is also progressing nicely and hopefully there will be an update in the near future.

Burglaries - There have been a few Burglaries across the division so Please ensure you keep your home secure at all times locking windows and doors. Also keep keys and expensive items out of sight and consider security lighting around the outside of your property and light timers inside your property. If you are going to be away for any length of time, let your neighbours know so they can also keep an eye on your property. And if you see anything suspicious or anything of concern Please contact the Police.

The evening of entertainment starts at 8pm, with the doors open 30 minutes earlier and anyone attending is asked to bring their own drinks and nibbles.

The event is brought to Epworth through Livelincs, a rural touring programme of theatre, dance and music. It is funded by Arts Council England and North Lincolnshire Council. Livelincs brings high quality events to rural areas. All profits from the evening will go to the charitable Thurlow Playing Field.

Half- pound Rich Tea biscuits A little milk Brandy to taste Double cream Chocolate Flake

METHOD Cream margarine & sugar, beat in eggs & melted chocolate.

Heat a little milk & pour onto crushed biscuits, add brandy to taste. Layer biscuits & chocolate mixture (finishing with chocolate). Cover with whipped cream & flake.

Axholme Camera Club News It is with regret that I start this account by reporting the death of one of our Honorary Life Members. Cliff Espin-Bradley who had been a member for more than 30 years past away on the 19th January after battling illness for many years. His funeral was held on Monday 3rd February at St Nicholas Church Haxey. He will be missed by all who know him and his many friends at the Camera Club send their condolences to his wife Rosemary and family.

The meeting of the 5th February held in the Church Hall was a Digital Projected Competition, the subject was “FLIGHT”. We had 36 coloured and 18 Monochrome entries and the Judge Mr Colin Lusby from Grimsby explained what he had been expecting when given the title. His first thoughts were Flight, he could expect aeroplanes, but then he started to expand that and came up with many other fascist of flight and he was not disappointed.

The members as always took the subject on board and we had images of Stair Cases, Bees flying, plenty of birds of different types, we even had a scrabble board and flying bubbles. Plus, of course we had images aeroplanes flying, shots of cockpits, the Red Arrows, member entered shots of old planes and new ones, and one which got the most applause was a polystyrene model flying in the clouds. The Judge awarded the top score of 20 marks to three of the coloured Images and two of the monochrome images and comments were made that the quality of entries was high.

Thank you to all the members who entered and congratulation to those with high scoring images. The judge offered his thanks for inviting him and he congratulated the club on its welcome and friendly atmosphere.

Next weeks meeting is on Tuesday 11th February at 7.30pm in the Church Hall, Haxey when we will be showing a slide show of the winning images from the Royal Photographical Society Nature Group. All are welcome.

Now & Then - Then & Now No. 59

This month & every month see Epworth in bygone days and compare to today's images!

Epworth Baptist Church built in 1857, along with its schoolroom built 1881, situated at 58-62 Station Road Epworth, one of three, the others at Crowle and West Butterwick.

The first meeting house in Epworth was built in 1760, on land which incorporated a Baptist Graveyard given by Joseph Ile in 1699. Prior to this, the church had met for worship and prayer in various houses such as Joseph Ile’s, not only in Epworth but all over the Isle of Axholme. Early open air baptisms were held at the River Torne near ‘Dipping House Farm’ situated of the road from Belton to Santoft. It is reported that the people walked the two miles back to Epworth in their dripping clothes. My first real knowledge of the church came when I spent pleasant times with Geoff Tonge at his bungalow in Epworth, a first class musician and former joiner. He told me about the times of the 'Westenders' a small musical group that his father and he played in. They were happy times Geoff recalled, "Often the old church was packed to the gunnels when we played and everyone was so happy". Geoff played his piano for me whilst I was with him and he showed me some of his furniture that he made. I will always remember his smile and his continued dedication to his beloved Baptist church.

Below the new church completed in 2007, (the old school room still survives) it's still a very happy place when they hold their services there. Further reading on Axholme Baptists can be found in a small pamphlet 'Axholme Baptists' by A.de M Chesterman, published 1949.

Lex’s Legacy Stupendous Success

Total raised £3620 The 25th of January 2014 marked one year since the tragic death of marvellously brave Alex Strong- a young boy whose legacy has become famous for touching every mother and son alike and evoking a proud sense of community all over the Isle. And it was this very legacy which was celebrated at ‘Lex’s Pride of the Isle Awards’, not only commending the outstanding contributions of extraordinary individuals to the community, but also– with help from some famous faces including Sheridan Smith and John Parr- raising over £4000 for the charity Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice, which gives support to families going through similar troubles as the Strongs.

Prior to the occasion, I managed to get an interview with the altruistic organisers of the event– Leesa Sharpe, Maxine and Olivia Strong. I learned from this interview just how important a role Bluebell Wood had played in the Strongs’ lives, and thus how important it was to make the night a success for them. Leesa Sharpe had heard of Lex’s story in 2011 and was so moved that she held numerous fund-raising events such as a night of fashion and music in 2012532676 which raised 01302 or almost 07912£4000 643010 19 for Alex’s treatment.

Walking into the extravagant event, intermingled amongst the glamorous glad rags and elaborate decorations were reminders of the young boy that inspired the event. Storm Troopers (of one of Alex’s favourite films– Star Wars) were present throughout the night and were having pictures taken with the vivacious children.

The ENA children’s dance troop also incorporated some of Alex into their remarkable routine, theming their dance around Star Wars and Transformers. Later in the night, ENA’s adult troop followed with an equally spectacular show.

Maxine Strong, Lex’s mum, made an inspiring speech that touched the hearts of everyone in the room. She took us on a journey through Alex’s life, making us laugh– saying he looked like a child from the Addams family at birth– and some of us cryed as she went on to talk about the “snowball of events” which led to his untimely death in 2013. She gave a very personal account of Lex’s illness and how she and her family coped with it over the years, putting a positive spin on everything she could,. How the numerous car journeys totalling over 33,000 miles to and from Sheffield Hospital for Alex’s treatment were spent listening to Alex’s favourite music, and it was through those journeys that Alex became such a music fan. Maxine went on to say that Alex was a very “sociable and polite young lad” who “would always have a natter”, notwithstanding his terminal condition, which was treated with “privacy, care and respect” by Bluebell Wood Children's Hospice, who, specifically the play staff, received the upmost thanks from Maxine throughout the night for helping Alex Event Organiser and his family through their strife. It comes as no surprise to me that Maxine Leesa Sharpe with won the Inspirational Mother and Son Award 2013 due to her sacrifices and TV star Sheridan Smith care for Alex right through his illness, as one could tell from the speech alone what a doting mother she is and that any child would be lucky to have her as their mother.

The awards Each and every person nominated had an incredibly inspiring story that deserved them their award.

Male Awards Ian Fields (Runner-up): For services to such events integral to the Isle community as Epworth Christmas Lights and Epworth Show John Martin (Winner): Martin a survivor of leukaemia battled with the form of cancer since the age of four and has managed to lead a long and fulfilling life.

Female Awards Barbara Senior (Runner-up): For benevolent donations and fundraising for leukaemia charities.

Sarah Bradford (Winner): An inspiringly valiant woman who has fought through intensive chemotherapy for breast cancer twice.

Child Awards Joshua Askew (Runner-up): Lex’s cousin who supported him throughout the illness.

Olivia Strong (Runner-up): For unconditional support for her brother Alex.

Alfie Hughes (winner): A fellow sufferer of Neuroblastoma, Alfie is a courageous boy of just three years whose fight with cancer continues.

Amazingly Alfie attended the event hours after receiving chemotherapy.

Most Inspirational Award The late Anna Verrico was awarded the Most Inspirational Award, collected by husband Paul and daughter Lucia. Although Anna unfortunately lost her life to cancer in November 2013, her family are adamant her death was not in vain as her legacy will serve as a push forward in finding a cure for this terrible disease.

After the awards came spectacular performances from local band The Torn, Comedian Steve Womack and number one hit star of the 80s John Parr– name of St. Elmo’s Fire.

I was lucky enough to get an interview with star of Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps, Benidorm and London West-End Sheridan Smith. The night meant that much more to her due to losing her brother Julian to cancer at very young age, saying that she had to “reapply my make-up a few times for crying”.

Sheridan wanted the night to be “a celebration of Alex’s life” so decided to modestly ‘take a back seat” throughout the night as she “didn't want it to be about me”. She commended the “great sense of community in Epworth” which she said she misses a great deal when living in London. When asked whether she’d be willing to present the awards for 2015, she said she’d ‘love to,’ something to look forward to for next year!

A couple of messages from Leesa posted on facebook 1/2/2014 Pride of the Isle is the talk of the Isle, everyone who was there on the Night is still buzzing… People that weren’t there want to be there next year. I have had ticket sale requests of over 350 people, this is totally amazing, seen as there were only 216 tickets sold this year. I have people ringing me and stopping me in the street to congratulate us on an amazing night. When I woke up on Sunday morning I had 500 notifications photo tags, thank you’s messages etc..

Next year will be bigger….. and better…. Although we need bigger premises we are currently looking at different possibilities, we need it to stay local!! All local people support myself in Fundraising so I want to pay them back by keeping it local. All local business look after each other and support fantastic fundraising across the Isle by giving their services, raffle prizes and themselves, and our way of saying thank you is to keep it local. The Torn and the Star Wars characters have been booked for 24th January 2015, little note from Sheridan that if she is not Filming then she will be there too, Tickets will go on sale in July this year.

In the last article I looked at pruning your trees. This month I turn my attention to looking after the health of your trees.

Perhaps it is a statement of the obvious, but it is worth having a caring eye on your trees throughout the year. This will mean that you will be able to spot any unusual patterns of tree behaviour such as sudden loss of leaves or strangely stunted shoots or fruit, and then taking any remedial action.

At this time of year it is worth making sure that the area around the trunk of your trees is kept fairly clear – probably to a radius of about 2 feet. This means keeping any weeds or other plants away from the trunk.

With a clear space around the tree you can then apply manure which will help to add nutrient and retain moisture around the tree. If you don't have a source of fresh manure you can use garden compost or leaf mould.

In the first 2 or 3 months of the year it is worth adding additional nutrients to the soil around the tree to support the new growth and production of fruit. This can be in the form of Sulphate of Potash in January and Sulphate of Ammonia or Nitrochalk in February. These are readily available from garden centres. You don't need very much for each tree.

Although you will probably have completed your winter pruning for freestanding trees by now it is still worth taking a look at the tree while it is bare to check that you literally have caught all of the necessary pruning.

That apart, this time of year is one for eagerly anticipating the new shoots, blossom and fruit of the new season. In the next article I will be looking at apple blossom and the results of your winter pruning regime.

News from Belton All Saints Church of England Primary School Learning through Play This term, pupils in our Reception class have been exploring the world around them and in particular cold countries. They investigated ice balloons to explore changes in temperature and melting and freezing. Within their role play area they worked together to create an igloo, using around 200 empty milk containers. Art, Science, Maths, Language, Geography and more…. all from a single starting point.

History Research in Key Stage 1 Pupils from KS1 have been finding out about the Great Fire of London. They have explored and made tudor homes recreating their version of Pudding Lane; the role play area has been a bakers shop and on one day the school was filled with the smell of freshly baked bread.

Pupils have also made ‘old diaries’ and have written their own diaries entries from that fateful day. Holly Leggott (y1) described the events: ‘I was woken up by an orange glow in the sky. I felt sad. I heard people screaming. The smoke was horrible it stung my eyes. I ran with my family out into the lane. I looked back to my home it was burning.’

Reading in KS2 As a school we are keen to encourage pupils to read for pleasure as well as for learning. We maintain a well stocked library from which all pupils regularly chose books to read in school or at home. KS2 pupils are currently taking part in a national reading project ‘Read for my School’ which encourages them to read a variety of modern and traditional books from a wide range of different genre such as adventurous or historical styles. All pupils have online access to a wide select of ebooks or can record the real books they have read at home or school; this then counts towards a whole school total of books read over the two month project Y5 pupils with books and e-readers enjoying the Read period. There are opportunities for pupils to write online for my School challenge: Izzy, Bradley, Josie, Adam, book Kaycee-Mae and Alysia from Y5 reviews or to comment on the books they have read. Pupils, or schools, reading large numbers of books will be entered into a national draw to win book prizes. As I am writing this article pupils have collectively read 312 books. I will let you know how many books we finally achieve in a future article along with our winning readers.

West Butterwick C of E Primary School – Special Visitors On Wednesday 5th February, 41 Year One and Year Two children from Scunthorpe C of E Primary School came and spent the day in West Butterwick to compare the large town location of Scunthorpe with a village location. They spent the morning walking around the village finding different features and also visited a farm. The weather wasn't very good so when they arrived at school in the afternoon they were very cold and wet! We made them feel very welcome. In the short time that they spent with us, we gave them a guided tour and showed them the PowerPoint presentations that we had made using the photographs of the different features of the village that we had taken. They had some very good questions to ask and we were able to answer them all. We think the children and staff were very shocked at how small our school is compared to theirs! It was a very enjoyable day for them and a valuable afternoon for us, and we look forward to visiting Scunthorpe C of E in future with our Infant pupils.

We also welcomed three members of West Butterwick Parish Council in to school recently :Councillors Coggon, Jolly and Shadlock.

This worthwhile visit provided our School Councillors with an opportunity to ask questions about the role and responsibilities of the Parish Council.

Everyone was amazed at the length of service achieved by Councillor Coggon – 40 years!

We discovered that the Parish Council and the School Council share a priority :- to tackle the ongoing problem of dog fouling in the village. We have agreed some actions and will report on the success of these in the future… watch this space!

Cllr Jolly also asked the Councillors for their views on/ use of the MUGA (Multi Use Games Area).

TATTOOS As a boy the only people who had tattoos (that I was aware of) were ex sailors, and in true ‘Popeye’ style they were complex designs of anchors and mermaids. As a young minister I officiated at a wedding of a lady wearing a very unusual design of dress with sleeves that fell over her arms—she later told me that this was to hide the names of her first husband that had been tattooed on! She regretted it! And there is part of the problem— tattoos are not easily reversible. They are meant to be there forever.

I was interviewing recently and a female candidate had a visible tattoo on the side of her foot. I asked about this, very politely, and she went to explain that she had a series of tattoos on various parts of her body to represent significant experiences. I didn’t ask any more!

The BBC have recently featured tattoos in a news programme and apparently they are more acceptable than they have ever been, a fashion led by such icons as David Beckham. They are not for me!

You can by look-a- like transfer tattoos, and I have seen children playing with them—at least they can be washed off.

To God’s people they were told that they were so close to God, so special, and so never to be forgotten’ that it was as if they had been tattooed on the palms of his hands. Thank goodness that we have our lives enriched by friends who are so loyal and so near to us that is as if our names were tattooed together.

Turning Right Dear readers, There is a special section in the police accident report called “waiting to turn right” from the middle of the road which, although it is an everyday manoeuvre, produces more than its fair share of smashes. By definition, while you are waiting to turn right, your vehicle is preparing to move across oncoming traffic. You have to judge the speed and distance of the vehicles coming across you, bearing in mind fast moving motorbikes, and slower road users such as cyclists. Getting that judgement right is one of the hardest things any driver ever does.

As well as that, while you are waiting there, vehicles may well be moving down your inside – or possibly queuing behind you, also waiting for you to complete the turn. Either way, it’s a good idea to think about your steering as you sit there waiting for the suitable gap to cross. Keep your front wheels pointing straight ahead until the time comes to actually drive across the road. Resist the temptation to turn the wheels to the right in readiness – or to just hold the car on the foot brake. That way if you are hit from behind, perhaps by one of those vehicles filtering past, the impact is less likely to send you into the oncoming traffic (which could turn a minor shunt into a major crash).
