This is an amazing choir made up of children of all ages, from 5yrs up to 16yrs and with several adults too. They have visited the Isle twice before, performing in All Saints' Church, Belton as well as in Belton Primary and South Axholme schools.

Police Report Burglaries in Belton There has been a shape increase in burglaries in the Belton area, with a shift from commercial properties to domestic outbuildings being the main interest for thieves.

Community Our attention again is the area around Kings Croft Car Park, and in Tina Starbuck Support Officer particular the Church. There have been very few calls for service 7577 Stewart Pearson regarding anti-social behaviour; however thieves have struck yet again at the town‘s historical landmark. Their target was lead from the roof, and a large section of lead around 20 meters long by ¾ metres wide has been stripped off. It is believed access was gained from the entrance off Beltoft Road, and the theft is believed to have occurred sometime between 10.00 am on Saturday 15 th and 2pm on Monday 17th January 2011.Such theft means that the roof is subject to the elements and possible further damage, and given the building is listed limits the type of repairs that can be made in the interim.

Wildlife Crime Wildlife crime is of concern to farmers and landowners on the Isle of Axholme. It is important that every effort is made to reduce the opportunity for this type of crime to occur and to bring offenders to justice. The Neighbourhood team together with their uniformed colleagues recognise the importance of creating secure environments for farmers and landowners on the Isle of Epworth. There is a Farmwatch/Countrywatch scheme running and together we are actively seeking ways to resolve this issue. This is a continuing concern in the area, and there have been a number of positive responses from the Police in the Central ward. A number of persons have been identified as being connected to some of these incidents and have been reported for their involvement.

This situation will continue to be monitored and positive action will be taken.

A male youth was recently arrested for a burglary at Epworth whereby he stole a quantity of energy drinks. He received a final warning. Any further offences will see him being dealt with at court.

A male was arrested and bailed for a house burglary in Epworth. He was interviewed and bailed pending forensic enquiries from property recovered. As a result of this arrest a search was authorised and stolen property was recovered from a theft back in December 2010.

On Target = Dance Classes The new Dance Fit class will start on Friday 28 January 2011. They are being held at Epworth Leisure Centre between 5.30pm and 6.30pm every Friday. The session is free of charge and both males and females between the ages of 8 and 19 years are welcome. Calling All Bookworm’s…

Located in the Market Place at Epworth is a piece of our Heritage , but with a Definite place in our Present. It is The Epworth Mechanic‘s Institute Library. This is a veritable Aladdin‘s Cave for anyone interested in Books or Research into Local or Family History.

The Library holds over 12,000 fiction titles, both old and new. Also many Factual Books on a number of interests. In addition to this the library has a research room which holds many books on the Isle of Axholme including information dating back to the drainage program in the early 17th century. For local Family History they have some copies of the Isle of Axholme family history society records and The Epworth Bells dating back to the 19th Century.

The Library is run by Volunteer‘s and is open Tuesday 10am to Noon , Thursday 1.30pm to 4.00pm and Friday 7.30pm to 9.30pm.

All this for £1 per year membership and the sum of 1p per book per week to borrow a book. At the time of Public Library closure‘s I urge you to support this treasure trove of History.

The Isle of Axholme

THE OLD RECTORY The Old Rectory, the birthplace of Methodism, is the object of pilgrimage from many parts of Britain and indeed the World. The present building is on the site of the previous Rectories, east of the centre of Epworth. In Samuel Wesley’s time fire destroyed the Rectory in 1704 and again in the famous fire of 1709 when the Rectory was entirely destroyed. It was rebuilt in 1709 at a cost of £184.00 in a solid architectural style with good solid ’ships’ timbers for the beams. Until 1954 this building had served at the Rectory for the Vicar but was falling into disrepair. I t was offered to the Methodist Church by the Church of England. It was bought with donations from The World Methodism and is the property of the World Methodist Council. It was restored in 1956-7. Care was taken to restore it to its 1709 state so that any since additions had to be removed.

Blocked up windows due to Window Tax had to be opened up. Where bricks were worn they were removed and turned the other way around. Where bricks were worn away, bricks from a building of similar age in the village were used. Many old pantiles had to be removed. During restoration an old arch of 17th century origin was discovered as well as the chimney bricks of a pre 1709 date. These were parts of the Rectory that had survived the 1709 fire.

Since the restoration many articles of furniture, pictures and other historic pieces have been recovered and put on display in the Old Rectory.

The Old Rectory a Grade1 Queen Anne listed building was officially opened on June 29 th, 1957 with visitors from all over the world attending.

In the earlier years from 1957 till 1971-2 August-to-August 75,442 people had visited with the exception of two years the figures grew rapidly. Below is a breakdown of those attendances: 1957-8 – 1712, 1958-9 – 3002, 1959-60 3704, 1960-1 – 4210, 1961-2 – 4405, 1962-3 – 4441, 1963-4 – 4582, 1964-5 – 5146, 1965-6 5982, 1966-7 5990, 1967-8 – 5853, 1968-9 – 5833, 1969-70 – 6006, 1970-1 6666, 1971-2 7910.

Since 1972 - 2009 visitor numbers have maintained figures between, 6,000 – 7,000. The new Millennium has seen many positive changes and improvements to the house, and a Physic Garden has also been added.

My thanks go to Ella Field for the above postcard. Most probably Johnny Fields (no relation) stands in the doorway at his Saddlers shop in 1905, observe the scaffolding around the building of the Imperial Hall dating this picture and the gas lamp on the left.

Records from Barbara Adair standing in her shop below, confirm that 11 High Street Epworth, has always been a retail shop. In 1768, John Sibbson’s operated a bakers there. Thomas Beaumont ran a plumbers & glaziers business in 1864, and later in 1867 Theadore Stainton had it as a music shop and druggists. The year 1869 was the first as a Saddlers through Daniel Salisbury. In April 1925 Charles Cornelius Salisbury sold it to John Richard Fields for £360.00 conveyanced by Taylor Glover & Hill of the Manor Court House. The 1960’s brought the Teasdale tea rooms and now in 2011, Barbara runs her ‘Inside Outside’ gift shop to the delight of her many customers.

Dear Friends, WHAT’S YOUR BLING? In common with others of my generation, it is only in the past two years that I have caught up with the use of the word ‗bling.‘ But as I understand it the word derives from hip hop, and is now been generally adopted and is used to describe something, particularly jewellery, that is flashy, ostentatious and unnecessarily elaborate. It is typically something that is not the real thing, but created for visual effect. I don‘t think I own any ‗bling,‘ but then others might correct me. ‗Bling‘ is often ‗bling‘ in the eyes of the beholder.

I was therefore surprised to hear the presenter of BBC 4‘s Gardeners‘ Question time refer to the parish church of Lavenham in Suffolk as ‗ecclesiastical bling.‘ This struck me as wholly inappropriate for however elaborate a parish church, or historic chapel, I would describe neither as flashy, ostentatious or elaborate, and certainly not as something other than ―the real thing.‖ To describe a church as ‗bling‘ seems totally false. Whatever our own personal views about church or chapel, they are real concerns, in that they have many years of history and devotion behind them, and many are in fact understated in their simplicity. This does not seem to match with the word ‗bling‘.

So what is your ‗bling?‘ ‗Bling‘ is of the moment, and is not intended to last. So it is more important for us to know what is ‗non- bling‘ in order that we may hold fast to that which lasts. Whatever our faith or philosophy it has to be the ‗non-bling‘ that is really important. So lets find again the ‗non- bling‘ in our lives.

Epworth Colts Under 9’s - Season Update Epworth Colts Under 9‘s team began playing in the Caparo league in September 2010; their first season of competitive football with the vast majority of the squad having been in the Colts‘ academy for the past two seasons.

The boys play in the Caparo Under 9‘s Saturday League, Division two; playing 16 league games and also competing in the Divisional Cup. Home games are played at the Thurlow on Saturday mornings against teams from Barton, Brigg, Winterton and Kirton Lindsey.

As a new team to competive football, the boys have taken their time getting use to playing games. Despite some early defeats they have always enjoyed the matches and work hard to improve. They have been rewarded in the past few weeks with positive results and the improvement on the pitch has been clearly seen in their performance. Training continues in the week to help the players improve their skills and, for the coaches, it is rewarding to see how the players try hard to reproduce their training in games on a Saturday.

The team is well supported by parents and other family members; the games have become a regular social gathering and the encouragement provided for the boys is clearly having a positive effect. The team has been fortunate in securing financial assistance from one boy‘s grandparents and this finance has been used to purchase personalised team jackets which helps team identity and gives the boys some pride in the team they represent.

The team follows the ethos set down throughout Epworth Colts Football Club. It is important that the boys enjoy their football, regardless of their ability. They are encouraged to play positive football with an emphasis on passing and team work. They are taught the importance of respect in football to their team mates, opponents and officials. And lastly, but just as important, they are encouraged to improve their individual ability to become as good a player as they can possibly be.

The Under 9‘s team has grown throughout this season, they are more confident in their play and the improvement in individual ability and the team in general has been remarkable. Isle Group of the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust Wildlife Gardening Mary Porter will be giving an illustrated talk on Wildlife Gardening on Thursday March 3rd to the Isle Group of the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust. She will be giving us lots of tips and ideas on how to attract wildlife into your garden. There are many different types of plants which can be grown in any size garden to attract birds and insects. This should be valuable information just before the spring gardening season begins. Other things such as ponds and bird boxes also encourage a variety of creatures into our gardens and Mary will give us lots of information about these. All our meetings are open to anyone, you don‘t have to be a member, so do come along.

Advance notice of our April meeting Cleethorpes to Paradise is the title of the talk which will be given by Ray Bramall and Peter Yeo on Thursday April 7th. These two local photographers have taken a series of photographs of the Lincolnshire Coast over a period of years which they will be sharing with us. No doubt we will see some places we have not seen before as well as some familiar scenes. The evening will be preceded by a very short AGM. We meet on the first Thursday of the month from October to May at the new hall at the rear of Haxey Methodist Chapel on Low Street starting at 7.30pm. There is a small admission charge of £1 and there is a raffle and refreshments. Bird food is always on sale at the meetings as well as at Geoff‘s house in Belton.

Lust & Deception at Westminster

The cast get into character

Lust & deception at Westminster may be nothing new and are the subject matter of Haxey Amateur Dramatic Society‘s next comedy play, but much is new about the production. Most importantly, this will be Mary Lenanton‘s first full length play at Haxey, although she is a frequent producer at Retford Little Theatre. John Brown makes his debut with the Society, and also puts his previous experience to good purpose in a most unusual and demanding role. Returning to the Haxey stage, although not strictly newcomers, are Nigel Smith, after a long absence, Andrew Lee, Colin Emery, Sheila Morrey & Pat Ellison. Finally, this will be the first time the Society has put on 5 performances. Recent productions have sold out on most nights, and the group would like as many people as possible to have the opportunity to enjoy this great comedy.

The play is ―Out Of Order‖, another rollicking romp written by Ray Cooney. John Spittlehouse leads as Richard Willey, the suave Government Minister, who has planned to spend the night with the attractive but dizzy Jane Worthington (Lynsey Yeardley), who just happens to work in the office of Her Majesty‘s Opposition. The attempted affair is beset by a series of frustrating misadventures, including the discovery of a very disconcerting presence, played convincingly by John Brown, and by the appearance of both Richard‘s sophisticated wife (Sheila Morrey) and of Jane‘s distraught husband (Andrew Lee). The best efforts of the M. P.‘s upright but nervous Parliamentary Private Secretary (Nigel Smith) to extricate his boss only lands them both in deeper trouble. The interventions of the severe Hotel Manager (Joan Young), the nimble and wily old hotel waiter (Colin Emery), a comely Italian maid with only pidgin English (Pat Ellison), and the bossy but attractive Gladys (Emma Speers, in her second role at Haxey) do nothing to improve matters.

For an evening of merriment & laughter, make sure you book early for this play. The performances are at 7.30pm on Friday & Saturday 1st & 2nd April & on Thursday, Friday & Saturday 7th, 8th & 9th April in Haxey Memorial Hall. Jacqui is my rock, best friend and the best partner in the world and helped me so much, not only getting my life back on track but also helping me write my autobiography.

Jacqui was born and bred in Epworth and spent many years working for her Mum (Ann) in her hairdressing salon " The Beauty Spot" .

This story follows him from a schoolboy obsession of motorcycles to becoming a BRITISH CHAMPION. His incredible comeback from a serious accident at the 2006 Ulster Grand Prix in practice for the 250cc race, which was to test his determination and courage to the limit. Then the incredible fight for life following his near fatal accident at Oliver‘s Mount Scarborough in July 2008. " I thought about the book before I suffered the crash. Its a great way for me to reflect on some of the best and worst moments in my years of motor cycle racing. I want people to know how much joy it has brought me its something that I hope young people going into sport can take inspiration from".

Epworth Primary School News Letter Stamp Collecting in School Grene Grieve from the Stamps in School organisation recently worked with two classes to introduce the children to the hobby of stamp collecting.

Stamps in School is an organisation founded by Grene. It is sponsored by the British Postal Museum Archive.

The children had a very enjoyable lesson and learnt a lot about the history of stamps as well as Stamp collecting. Mrs Grieve bought in many stamps of different ages, designs and countries to show the children and even gave each child a small packet of stamps to start off their own collection.The lesson was also a good geography lesson with the children learning the location of many countries.

The school now plans to start its own Stamp Club for the new stamp collectors to join.

Sing Up All 250 children in school joined with children in thousands of schools to take part in National Sing Up day on Wednesday 9th February with a special Assembly in which each class sang a song to the rest of the school. Even the teachers joined in! We had a great Assembly and all enjoyed using our singing voice.

Grounds Force Team Improve our School Grounds We have our own Grounds Force team in school made up of a group of children who give up their lunchtimes to help improve the school grounds. This term our major project is to improve an outdoor courtyard area with ornamental plants and raised beds for growing vegetables. Recently the team planted the free sapling trees we had donated to us from the Woodland Trust. In a raised bed they had made.

Picnic tables have been set up in this area so in the summer it will be a pleasant area for the children to eat their packed lunch.

Children make presentation to new teachers Earlier this month a group of children made a presentation to a group of newly qualified North Lincs teachers at their Conference, about their work as Playground Buddies and Circle Time Leaders.

Some of our older children do a great job as Buddies helping younger children to find friends to play with and to solve minor quarrels. The Circle Time leaders lead Circle Time meetings for several classes when the children discuss issues and find solutions.

The children have shown great maturity in their work and impressed many delegates at the Conference with the work they presented. Well done to everyone. You were all a credit to the school.

Improved Playground Equipment for the Infant children We have recently had some funding to improve our infant playground as some of the space is now used by Stepping Stones and our Foundation Stage children. We are putting in a pirate ship, an outdoor stage, a sand table and some ‗mushroom‘ seating all to encourage creative and imaginative play. The children are looking forward to using the new equipment soon as it should be installed before Easter.

What are YOU giving up this Lent?

Shrove Tuesday, otherwise known as Pancake Day, is not far away (8th March). The day after is known as Ash Wednesday, the beginning of Lent. Lent is the six weeks before Easter and traditionally, many people ‗give up something‘ for Lent as a kind of self discipline.

The most ‗popular‘ thing to give up is some kind of food – chocolate, sweets, crisps, cakes and puddings – or drink – a ban on all alcohol. Young people like to think they can give up homework, but not surprisingly, parents disagree. They might prefer their children give up some spare time to keep their bedrooms neat and tidy without being coerced!

Now is the time to start planning what YOU will give up this year. The hope is that by giving things up for a few weeks, we will be fitter and happier by the time Easter arrives. But please don‘t ruin all the good work done in weight loss during the Lenten season by eating too many Easter eggs on Easter Day. Easter Day is always a special celebration in the life of the Church. The Lenten fast is over, but more importantly, Jesus has risen from the dead! More about that in the next edition of Arrow.

South Axholme Teen Page News Here at South Axholme we have recently had a deep learning day which involved each year carrying out and getting involved in different activities.

The year 11‘s went on a trip to Hull University for the opportunity to look round the campus and get an insight to life at a university, as in a few years some of these pupils will be having to decide if they wish to carry on studies into Higher Education.

Year 9‘s took part in an inter-form fashion show competition, which involved them designing and making their own garments; congratulations to 9H who won the contest!

Driving Hazards

Dear readers, A hazard is anything that contains an element of potential danger. That includes junctions, roundabouts, hillcrests and bends, as well as the position and movement of other road users and even the weather. Imagine combining all six of these elements in one scenario and you have a massive potential for danger.

To an Advanced Driver, any junction, say a roundabout, traffic lights or a left or right turn, is a hazard, not just a child running into the street, a blind bend or an accident black spot. This means that it is essential for you to position your vehicle correctly when dealing with them, giving you that one essential safety ‗ingredient‘ sufficient time to react.

To minimise your chances of being affected by other peoples mistakes or adverse driving conditions you must take a planned and systematic approach to your driving.

What is Commentary Driving: Commentary driving- describing aloud everything you see, think and do whilst driving- is a great way to hone your driving technique. On a busy road or in an urban environment you‘ll often find there is so much going on that you can‘t describe it all quickly enough – you simply can‘t keep up verbally.

This proves how many thought processes a vigilant driver goes through on an everyday drive. Commentaries illustrate how much you are really seeing and the level of thinking involved, not just your actions.

Driving Plans: The three simple questions.

What can be seen? Plan your drive on what you can see ahead, to the rear, and all around you.

What cannot be seen? Remember that danger can exist on every hidden section of the road What might reasonably be expected to happen?

Keep a look-out for clues to dangers that may lay ahead, eg: Junction warning signs give early notice that a driver may be waiting to pull out ahead.

Dustbins outside houses on a twisty road mean that there could be a stationary dustbin lorry around the next bend.

Loose hedge clippings or straw on a country road, warn that there could be a slow moving tractor or combine harvester round the next bend.

Don‘t follow buses to closely or you may get stuck behind them when they pull up at the next stop. Drop back a little and keep a lookout for the next stop, as it provides advanced warning of an opportunity to pass.

Prioritise hazards in order of importance. Deal with each one accordingly.

With these potential hazards in mind drive within the limits of what you can see, never assume anything and plan for danger to emerge from obscured areas.
