Epworth is holding its 5th Music Day in conjunction with International Music Day (Fête de la Musique) on Friday 21st June. All day in the village there will be free open-air musical performances of all kinds, many of them impromptu.

We will be capping the day’s music with a mini concert in the evening in the Wesley Church Hall.

If you are a musician – amateur or professional, rock, classical, folk, jazz – or singer who would enjoy joining with musicians all round the world in celebrating the first day of Summer in music, please come and join in. If you would like to take part, we would love to hear from you at summerfest059@gmail.com or simply turn up in the town on 21st June at any time from 10am onwards to perform or listen.

Amateur Dramatics The Epworth Mowbray Players No. 12 by Anthony Catherall

The smallest cast yet performed the latest murder mystery play “Dead on Nine” at the Imperial Hall on the 16-19 March 1960. Consisting of, only seven players.

“Dead on Nine” was written by Jack Popplewell (1911-1996). Born in Leeds Jack started out as a songwriter. A friend entered a song he had written called ‘If I Should Fall in Love Again ‘ into the News Chronicle song contest in 1940, it won first prize. Subsequently Gracie Fields recorded it.

He went on to write for Bing Crosby, Vera Lynn, Anne Shelton and the Geraldo and Ambrose orchestra’s. He owned Manor Farm, in Churwell, Leeds and when not writing turned his hand as a rhubarb farmer.

Moving on as a playwright, his first ‘Blind Alley’ in 1953 later became the film ‘Tread Softly, Stranger’ starring Diana Dors and George Baker. Next came “Dead on Nine” first performed at the Westminster Theatre in August 1955. This was the story of a mans reliant on his wife’s money asking for a divorce after 10 years of marriage, on refusal he attempts to kill her, then other murders ensue.

Jack Johnson once again took the lead role as Robert Leigh, with Mary Housham his wife Esmeralda.

Jennifer Pape came into the cast as Robert’s secretary. Bob Robinson was first on stage as Tom Hammond. Freda Matthews was the maid, Ronald H. Fairhurst as Richard Farrow and F. Wyndham Atack completed the cast as Leslie Booth.

Hello, Stephanie, Doreen and Angela. This month we look at the narrowest part of Station Road Epworth, where you live and lived. An attractive picture indeed depicting the quiet peaceful life of the local inhabitants. But readers, can you recognise where this top picture was taken. The banner was erected to celebrate the opening of the railway on 2nd January 1905. Three trains left Epworth for Goole each day at 08:34-13:09-18:46 taking 44 minutes. To the right is Elmfield House later the home of Tom & Mrs Brown. Opposite was the Fruit Farm as it was known locally owned by Emerson Gravil.

The Baptist Church is behind the barn on the left. In later years 'down street' from Elmfield House was Lidget Green House No.45, home since 1967 of Vic & Doreen Smith who kept over 300 pigs and some cattle in their field. Vic used to sell his stock at Doncaster Market on a Saturday. Next door at 47 was Mabel & Bill Bells grocery shop, later Mick & Christine Taylor ran it. Opposite Elmfield House at No 56, the Harrisons lived, Duncan was a painter and helped brother Ken with his coal delivery business further down street. When Owston Ferry Was King of the Isle Tales of floods, river traffic and how Owston Ferry used to be the most important village in the Isle of Axholme were the subject of a talk and slide show given to members of the Epworth Men’s Society on Monday night (May 13), Some 30 members attended the meeting in Epworth’s Imperial Hall, where Aubrey Lindley, from Owston Ferry, explained that about 150 years ago the village was the hub of all that happened in the Isle.

“At the time there were about 30 shops, the population was about 1,500 – compared with 900 now – and it was an inland port for the Isle attracting ships from both Hull and Gainsborough,” he said.

In his talk, entitled, ‘Riverside and Riverside People’. Mr Lindley explained that the crossing of the River Trent - between East Ferry and Owston – had been used as far back as Roman times but at high tides it would flood on a regular basis.

“A lot of houses close to the river had sloping floors, so that the flood water would enter through the front door and simply flow out of the back door,” he said.

Mr Lindley told members of the Society at steam-powered paddle ships had carried cargoes to and from Ferry from about 1830 onwards and there used to be a ferryman who would row people across the river from just outside the White Hart pub.

He added that in 1940, after a four day frost, people could walk across the Trent as it was frozen solid for the best part of 30 days.

Mr Lindley said the village used to attract day trippers and that up until 1939 it used to hold an annual regatta, which would attract more that 3,000 people.

In order to prevent the flooding of the village, substantial defences were erected along the bank of the Trent in the late 1940’s but they were replaced by an event stronger flood barrier in the later 1960’s.

The last two events in the Society’s current calendar of events are a trip to a brewery in Laneham, Nottinghamshire, on Friday, May 31, and an evening run-out to see the restored sloop Spider T at its Keadby moorings on Monday, June 10.

Treeman's Half Pinters Race For Life The friends and family of Richard Robinson are running the Race for Life at Clumber Park on 22nd June 2013 in memory of my dad. A well loved and respected man from Belton, Richard Robinson, affectionately known as 'Treeman/Treefella' was a Tree Surgeon by trade. Originally from Bradford, owning Fairweather Green Sawmills with his father and latterly R.Robinson Tree Services, Belton. Sadly dad lost his battle with cancer on 30th March 2013. Joining me in the group race will be Alex, my sister, along with my mum and my two aunties, Paula and Julia.

'Treeman' was an amazing person, and that was very apparent at his funeral. It was overwhelming around 300 people came to say Goodbye. He was loved by many, especially his family, his loving wife Fran, 3 daughters, myself (Charlie), Victoria and Alex and 2 grandsons, Daniel and Ewan. He had some wonderful friends, John and Lynn at The Crown Inn, Belton along with their regulars have been amazing. Their kindness and support has been invaluable.

When my dad was diagnosed with Non Hodgkins Lymphoma in January 2011, I decided this is it. I am doing something, anything to help. So I signed up for The Race For Life in Doncaster (my first ever run). I completed it and everyone was very generous with sponsorship. The year after, I completed the Doncaster 5k and The Clumber Park 10k Race for Life runs. My dad was very proud! This year I am running 3 Race for Life's in a week. 2 on the same day!

Me and my sister Alex are organising a raffle for Ward 18 (Oncology) at Scunthorpe General Hospital. I cannot put into words how much kindness and support they gave my dad, mum and we three girls.

I would love to give back as much as we possibly can to raise money for Cancer Research and The Oncology Ward at Scunthorpe. On Saturday 29th June, The Crown Inn, Belton will hold a special night in honour of my dad and the raffle will be drawn on this night too. We are looking for companies or individuals to donate raffle prizes.

Goodbye!

This is my final contribution to Arrow as I am retiring at the end of June.

When I first arrived here 15 years ago, one of the loves of my life was Coventry City Football Club! These days, now languishing in League 1, I can’t name the manager let alone any of the players. How times change.

Many things have changed in 15 years. Our present Bishops and Archdeacons have all been appointed in that time as well as Clergy in Epworth, Haxey and Crowle. I have worked alongside many Methodist ministers as well. I have seen Church buildings change, mainly with kitchens and toilets being installed. Every child now in Primary School had not even been thought of by their parents at that time. My youngest son started in reception when we first arrived and now he’s no longer a teenager.

People from all other the Isle have been so kind and supportive since I fell down that flight of stairs when on holiday in the New Forest over three years ago – thank you so much. The doctors discovered other underlying concerns that have led to my decision to take early retirement through ill health. I would stay on, but the Bishops, my doctor and my wife have all said a resounding, “No”.

With all the changes that have taken place and all that will take place in the future, one thing is certain: Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever (Hebrews 13:8). He will never leave us but is there all the time, supporting us whenever we call on Him. My final Service will be on Sunday 30th June at All Saints Church Belton at 11am. The theme of the sermon will be “The 13th Commandment”.

Anyone is welcome to come and see me off the premises!

The judge and winner Guy Myers

Wednesday 17th April was the “Photographer of the Year” competition. Members can enter images which have been in competitions before, hence the expected quality of those on show was anticipated to be high and we were not disappointed. The subject was Open, so any subject matter was acceptable, again the variety of the images was encouraging, plus it gave the Judge a testing hard time.

The Winning image was a monochrome portrait entitled Winning photograph, Dangerous book for boys “Dangerous Book For Men” the author was Guy Myers who had used very good exposure coupled with available lighting and camera technique in order to show very fine detail within the photograph.

Congratulation to Guy Myers who received a Trophy for his efforts presented by the Judge Mr Ray Brammall. Axholme Camera Club “Photographer of the Year competition” is sponsored by Tom Dennis Imaging in Scunthorpe who provided the funds towards the Trophy.

The Judge for the evening was Mr Ray Brammall ARPS, APAGB, from Belton. He emphasised the fact that the quality of the images was high but there can only be one winner tonight. He made his choice based on the high degree of detail plus the printing and the good use of subject lighting.

A full house welcomed Alison Walling from Lincoln to the May meeting of the Epworth and District Flower Club. Many members had seen her enchanting willow animal creations when visiting Doddington Hall dressed for Christmas in 2011.

Alison told Debbie Beecher, our Chairman, that she was a “willow anorak” but if an anorak describes someone obsessed to the point of boredom, Alison certainly was not. She first explained to the group how she had become involved in willow weaving. Having trained to become a Garden Designer Alison realised that too much time would be spent indoors, so she worked with some basket weavers and moved on from there.

Her knowledge was immense and Alison told us about much local history and how the Trent valley is excellent willow growing land, having supported willow basket weaving for a long period of time. Some members of the group pointed out that much willow is grown currently but Alison told us of the unsuitability for weaving of the biomass variety.

There are many varieties of willow and it grows in a surprising Alsoofoffering number countries and terrains and in more than one season. As she talked Alison showed us photographs the properties of different willows and its uses. Some uses in history had been Laptopillustrating Repairs essential e.g. hurdles to enclose stock and furniture and baskets and now many artefacts are of a decorative or local interest nature. She told us of her work on community projects and some displays in Did you know we buy which she has been involved and a commission for Hampton Court.

After some questions from the audience Alison gave everyone two canes of willow and with varying Second hand/broken laptops degrees of details success, the members made a ring followed by a star. There was much hilarity and the ring for atmosphere proved how much the group had enjoyed the talk. Members then examined and admired some of the examples of Alison’s work which she had with her.

News from Belton All Saints Church of England Primary School The new term is proving to be as busy as ever with pupils across school involved in all sorts of activities.

Our Blue Tit Family All of us in school are closely following a pair of blue tits who have nested in one of our bird boxes. The box has a webcam giving us continual live footage from inside the box. Pupils have been able to watch on a screen in the library as the birds have constructed their nest and then laid a fantastic nine eggs! We have watched as the adult birds take turns incubating the eggs, year 1 pupils have been keeping diaries and the Eco-Committee have been regularly updating a blog on our learning platform to keep us all up dated. We hope that the eggs will be hatching shortly and that all nine chicks will go on to fly the nest. I will let you know how they do in next month’s report.

Year 5 Residential Visit Year 5 pupils have enjoyed a residential visit this term to The Kingswood Centre near Conisborough . The centre gives pupils the opportunity to take part in a range of adventurous activities such as abseiling, the zip wire, orienteering and the climbing wall. Some of the challenges really tested the children’s courage and determination and there were many personal triumphs along the way, not least of all by the staff! The visit also supports pupil’s personal and social development as they learn to cope away from home for a few nights. Team work and supporting their peers help give everyone a positive sense of belonging to the class.

Kingwood Visitor Centre Cycling Proficiency As part of our Personal safety programme and leading on from a Pedestrian Skills course last year, Year 5 have also been busy undertaking their Cycling Proficiency Training. The training has been led by Bev Owen from the Local Authority Road Safety Team has and consisted of two intensive days of training on the playground and local roads specifically selected for the sessions. The children are then tested on the skills they have learnt, this year we are pleased to say that the large majority of pupils passed. It is hoped that the training, which is backed up by some road safety theory sessions back in the classroom, raises children’s awareness of their responsibility for their own personal safety as well as preparing them to become careful road user in the future.

Year 3 and 4 have been busy practising their production ‘Tuishi Pamoja’, we are all looking forward to watching it!

Crowle Air Cadets Are Soaring High A group of Crowle Air Cadets recently took to the skies over Newark, when they visited RAF Syerston to take part in their Gliding Induction Courses. The cadets each got a number of flights in the Viking Glider, learning how to pilot the aircraft and how the glider worked, as well as getting to see the local area and enjoy the thrill of gliding. For some this was their first taste of flight.

The cadets, who had all completed basic training in how an aircraft flies and how the control systems work back at Axholme Squadron, were able to put this theory into practice, while under the direct supervision of a trained instructor. The cadets were taught the basic controls and encouraged to take control for themselves. By the end of the day the cadets all had a better understanding of the glider, how it flies and also how to fly it.

While not in the glider, the cadets were busy learning how to and helping to get the gliders airborne. This involves retrieving and manoeuvring the gliders for launch, attaching the winch cables and assisting in the launches.

Flying Officer Docherty, who accompanied the cadets from Axholme Squadron, said “The cadets had a great time. They really learned a lot about the gliders and had fun doing it as well.”

She continued “The staff at the Squadron commented how active and engaged the cadets were in helping assist.”

Gliding is just one of the many opportunities Axholme Squadron offers to its members, both cadets and staff. Air Cadets is a youth organisation open to anyone aged 13-17. Annual Spring Talent Show On the evening of the 2nd of May South Axholme Academy hosted its annual talent show, showcasing some of the school’s finest talent. There was an array of performances and acts all performed by students from the Academy. This year students who placed 2nd and 1st had the opportunity to express their talent further in the local Scunthorpe talent show, with the chance of winning a cash prize of £500. 17 acts performed to a jam packed audience in the school hall. The sold out performance was a crowd winner and has become one of the most popular events in the school calendar.

On Sunday 5th May, the Smithy opened its doors again but this time entrance was free and refreshments prepared by Jaysters of Bawtry were served. This was all because the Owston Ferry Heritage Trail Guide was launched. It was encouraging that so many visitors arrived and were able to watch Don Barker, Master Blacksmith and Past Prime Warden of the Worshipful Company of Blacksmiths showing his art on the forge.

3rd place was awarded to Gabriella Spencer who performed her own rendition of the song ‘Shelter’ by Birdy. 2nd place was awarded to two young enthusiastic dancers, Ellie Petch and Nathan Williams, who incorporated a medley of different styles of dance into their intricately choreographed performance. The undeniable winner was awarded to a young talented singer called Robyn Hunt. She stunned the audience by performing her own song written by her personally, which was accompanied by her own guitar playing. She was highly commended by the panel of judges and received an excellent reaction from the audience.

Ian Walker, Chairman of the Owston Ferry Society thanked all the Committee for their help in the preparation of the Guide but especial thanks were given to Gary Allen of Voluntary Action North Lincolnshire for all his help to Tess Johnson in order that a Heritage Lottery Fund award was given for the production of the guide.

The judges also gave a special mention to the most inspirational performance given by year 11 pupil Joseph Teasdale, who unfortunately had to pull out of last year’s show at the last minute.

His performance of ‘Left Outside Alone’ by Anastasia received a standing ovation from members of the audience.

Anyone who missed it can call into the Smithy on Sunday’s between 2pm and 5pm and see the history of this village and also pick up a guide and follow the walk.

The photography was carried out by Steve Oatway Photography of Epworth and the artwork was carried out by the Forge and in particular Linda Cairns of that firm.

The sun shone and the visitors enjoyed tea served in the courtyard having watched the blacksmith and visited the museum upstairs.

Good luck to all the acts that will be going through to the Scunthorpe rounds further into the year.

THE TRENTSIDE FEDERATION (ST MARTIN’S AND WEST BUTTERWICK C OF E PRIMARY SCHOOLS) SCHOOL NEWS As the Summer Term has progressed since returning from the Easter break, our schools have commenced involvement with a number of new projects. The School Council at West Butterwick has met with a ‘playground markings’ company representative and now has a firmer idea of the what is required in order to fulfil their aim of having a range of new markings installed. I think the children were surprised at the prices of the different markings! Their ongoing fund-raising will certainly contribute to the cost of this.

We have already seen a new wooden play lodge built in the playground, so the markings will really be ‘the icing on the cake’ for further playground enhancement here at West Butterwick.

Over the forthcoming half-term West Butterwick School is to have 4 planting troughs delivered as all pupils are now involved in ‘We Can Grow’, a locally based company promoting vegetable growing in schools.

A variety of vegetables are to be grown over the course of the year throughout the various seasons (we have a 3 year planting plan). Through this, the children will connect with food first-hand (food to fork!), considering its provenance, its cultural significance and its variety. We also hope this ‘We Can Grow’ Project will support our school community in developing healthier habits : valuing the natural environment, which is the ultimate source of all our food, leading to children eating more fruit and vegetables and having a better recognition of taste and type. We anticipate many educational as well as lifestyle benefits…..Food growing can increase children’s scientific knowledge, and their environmental awareness. It also teaches them practical skills that will be useful throughout their lives. At some point in the near future, we are hoping to invite the village’s Gardening Club in to see how this project is progressing! Staying with the ‘food’ theme, the children also had the chance to work with the Seafood Industry Authority learning about the healthy benefits of eating fish, Monk fish how it is caught/harvested in order to be ‘sustainable’ and also to explore the geography of the local docks. Infants and Juniors handled a variety of fresh fish ; haddock, plaice, mackerel and monk fish. This interesting project culminated in the children making their own fish pie and taking home a fish-dish recipe book.

On 18th June our year 5 pupils (from both schools) will be attending a special Pilgrimage Event held at South Axholme School, in collaboration with other ‘South Isle’ Primary Schools – Westwoodside, Belton, Wroot and Epworth. The children are coming together to share what Pilgrimage means to them and how it has strong links with the development of social, moral, spiritual and cultural aspects of our own lives and the diverse society that we live in. I think this will be a really thought-provoking occasion. Furthermore, our Year 6 pupils attend the annual Church Schools’ Festival each year and so will be making the trip to Lincoln Cathedral on June 4th. Year 6 pupils from both St Martin’s and West Butterwick have the opportunity of having a tour of the cathedral as well as learning about bee keeping, handchimes, candle rolling, sign language and stained glass art. It will be a busy and memorable occasion, no doubt! Classes 1 and 2 at St Martin’s became ‘church detectives’ in the locale of Owston Ferry on Friday 3 May when they visited St Martin’s Church to learn about the Eucharist Service, linking this to prior learning about Jesus sharing the Last Supper with His Disciples. They had a very enjoyable first-hand learning experience. Thanks to our Vicar Rev’d Jeremy Green for making this so special for them. Both schools continue to work with Pupil Worship Leaders (Lighting the Candle Groups) who plan and deliver special services roughly every six weeks. St Martin’s School group was featured in the Diocesan News for their good practice! West Butterwick school continues to hold the Community Worship Services in St Mary’s church on a six-weekly basis. Our most recent service was held on the 3 rd May, featuring the theme of Friendship. Our ‘Pupil Worship Leaders’ told the story of the Paralysed Man. Key Stage 1 and Foundation Stage visit to St. Martin’s Church On Friday 3rd May Classes 1 and 2 enjoyed a visit to St. Martin’s Church. In Class 2 we have been thinking about church services and Reverend Green explained the Eucharist service to the children so they could understand its different parts and what it means. Natalie even got to try on the robes he wears to conduct the service. The children where are able to relate the receiving of bread and wine to their prior learning about Jesus sharing the Last Supper with his disciples.

Afterwards all the children had the opportunity to explore the church and its features. We had created a plan of the church with the relevant objects i.e. altar, and they enjoyed finding them within St. Martin’s Church. They took the time to make careful observational drawings of these features. It was wonderful to see the children’s enthusiasm and focus for exploring their local church.

TWEET OF THE DAY Many will know that the word “tweet” has a particular meaning in modern communications and social networking, as they combine to form media “twitter.”A tweet is limited to 140 characters or less- they do not intend to bore!. Indeed some programmes invite tweets to be sent in by way of comment upon the programme. Tweets are short and an ephemeral and ‘of the moment’ comment. Some of you will have twitter accounts!

Listeners to Radio 4 will be aware that the radio service has began a series of bird calls to start the day. This is known as “tweet of the day.”

So if we are awake in time our ears are filled with the call of the cormorant or curlew. Not everybody welcomes this innovation, but many do. The programme advertisement tells us that these tweets are being saved on the Radio 4 web site where we will able to hear them for ever!

There seems are paradox in a tweet being there for ever. I was surprised to hear the advert, but on reflection though it is often the little and insignificant things that stay with us. It may be the way our mother prepared a meal, or the way our grandfather whistled—all of no meaning at the time, but it has stayed with us, for ever.

As with the words and deeds of our earthly family, so with the words and deeds of Jesus. The breaking of bread, or being a guest at a wedding feast, not necessarily of any significance in themself, but yet they are.

These mean much to Christians, and will be read and heard for ever-or while time lasts.

There may be Tunnels ahead Dear Readers, Tunnels can present serious problems for drivers. For example, vehicle fires in Europe’s Mont Blanc and Gotthard tunnels have claimed 50 lives between them. Many died because they wrongly believed they should wait in their vehicles for help, rather than getting out of the tunnel as soon as possible.

Regardless of the length of the tunnel, an accident in one will present unique problems and knowing what to do is essential.

Before entering a tunnel: Check your fuel gauge in plenty of time, don't risk running out in a tunnel.

Turn on the traffic information station. Some larger European road tunnels have their own radio as well as electronic signs.

Take off your sunglasses, as they will hinder your eyesight in the dim light of a tunnel.

In the tunnel: Turn on dipped headlights. Do not use full beam as this will dazzle other motorists.

Don't exceed the speed limit. Leave plenty of room between yourself and the car in front and watch out for brake lights. Keep an eye out for the location of emergency pedestrian exits just in case you may need one.

In two-way tunnels, keep well to the nearside kerb. Do not change lanes unless instructed to.

If you break down: Switch on your hazard lights immediately.

Try to coast to a breakdown lay-by. If none are available, stop as close to the nearside kerb as possible.

Turn off the engine but leave the key in the ignition so the vehicle can be moved.

Evacuate the vehicle, making sure everyone is in a safe place – well away from the car and on the pedestrian walkway if there is one.

Put on a reflective jacket if you have one, and walk carefully to the nearest emergency phone to inform the operator.
