Welcome to the June issue of The Epworth and Belton Arrow.
It feels so good to be back and we are so sorry we didn’t produce the May issues of the Arrow. We felt it was the right thing to do to protect our delivery staff and readers when there were still many unknowns about Covid 19. We have given careful consideration to when would be the right time to produce a new issue and taken advice from public health, local government, Royal Mail and others within this sector. I am sure you will have been moved by the generosity of our community, their spirit, good humour and positivity. At such a bleak time, there is so much to be thankful for. I am humbled by the commitment and motivation of our NHS staff who are working with this virus daily and carers who are living with it in their care homes. I sincerely hope we never forget your bravery. To the army of support that has kept us all going, our local shop keepers, I don’t know how we could manage without you and hope we continue to repay your hard work and effort in the future by shopping local. Our police, Fire Service, bus drivers, shop workers, teachers and of course, everyone within the community who has volunteered their help and support to those in need and looked after their neighbours. Our next challenge after lockdown is how we learn to live with the threat of this virus. We still need to work, be educated, exercise, care, pray and socialise. I have been in contact with each advertiser in this month’s issue either by phone or email, whose main priority is the safety of their customers and themselves. Social distancing is paramount to reducing transmission as well as regular handwashing. We all have a responsibility to beat this virus and this is the only way we can help until our scientists find a treatment or vaccine. So, until we are safe, this community will continue to do what it does best, support one another, look after our most vulnerable and be mindful of how we can reduce the chances of transmission. The deadline for the July issue is Monday 15th June. The July issue will be distributed by 30th June. Keep safe everyone.

Community News Epworth Music Day With the still developing Covid-19 situation, we have been reviewing what to do about Epworth Music Day on 20th June. We know how much this event means to so many people in Epworth and beyond: musicians, singers, shops, cafes and pubs as well as everyone who comes to enjoy the music. We live in the community and aim to put on an event which is not only good fun, but is also safe. At this time, ‘safe’ includes personal health. No-one knows how this virus will pan out; we can only see what’s happening at present and listen to those with greater knowledge. If the virus remains widespread in the community, we realise that we’ll have few if any performers and audience members. Today, the Government announced that all pubs, restaurants and bars will shut. This will also mean that the venues we use will not be open and available to us. From this time of year onwards, the organisers carry out a lot of work behind the scenes: ensuring that various facilities are in place for the day; programming the performers for the different venues; and getting the publicity and the website in order; and more besides. We can’t wait for another month or 2 before we make a decision because this work has to be done now. So, we’ve regrettably decided that Epworth Music Day 2020 will be cancelled. We plan to hold next year’s on Saturday 19 June 2021. We had a full list of performers lined up for this June. They’ll have the first call on a place on the programme for next year if they’re able and want to attend. Meanwhile, if the social restrictions are miraculously lifted before 20 June this year, maybe some musicians will come out and entertain us? It would be a real treat, however limited in scale. We would like to thank you for your support for Epworth Music Day. We’ll be back in touch in time for next year’s event. Please help us to spread this news.

Thurlow Centenary Field Day - 13th June 2020 CANCELLED We had had grand plans with a free Field Day organised for the 13th June for the people of Epworth to come and enjoy but sadly we have had to take the difficult decision to postpone. The Epworth War Memorial Field Charity (better known as The Thurlow) was set up on 8th April 1920. The charity went on to purchase the field and raise further money for the erection of the gates as Epworth’s memorial to WW1. The gates were finally erected in 1938 and not long after the country plunged into war yet again. In 1945 the field came to mark the memorial for both world wars.

MISTERTON FARMER SHOWS SUPPORT FOR NHS Misterton’s Beetroot UK has found a novel way to show support for the NHS: by carving out the three letters 30m tall and 20m wide. In the video footage (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gweDWi1fHJE), driver Dean Hobson marks out the letters with a drag rake in just five minutes and in one take. Owner, Graham White, said the idea came as the Government began emergency restrictions to deal with Coronavirus. In an interview, he said: “The NHS is outstanding because staff are putting their lives at risk. This is a worldwide problem and so health services deserve some appreciation.” The idea was to cheer up his workers and his family - who all work for the family-run business. He added: “We’ve been through a real hard time with the weather this year, so we were a bit fed-up anyway. The weather got better then this horrible disease arrived.”

Crowle Peatland Railway - Acquisition of a Lisbon Tram Crowle Peatland Railway has been awarded £11,392 funding by the SSE Keadby Wind Farm Fund to enable it to purchase a tram to accommodate passengers on its line at Crowle Moor. The peat railways on Thorne & Hatfield Moor did not have passenger vehicles and the Crowle Peatland Railway has had to be inventive in finding a solution that would enable it to carry passengers. The problem was solved when they were offered a Portuguese Tram. The Tram. number 711, entered service in Lisbon in 1936 and remained in service for over 50 years. It and a number of its stablemates were acquired around 20 years ago by a collector in the UK who is now looking to give them a new lease of life. The chassis of 711 was constructed by the Wolverhampton firm of Maley & Taunton, which also built trams for Blackpool and the Isle of Man. The elegant wood body of the tram was built by Carris, the Lisbon tram Operator. Mel Bailey, chairman of Crowle Peatland Railway trustees, commented "the tram is an important part of the development of the railway and will enable us to take visitors for trips at our site on Crowle Moor. Thanks are due to SSE Keadby Wind Farm Fund for the generous donation, Julie Reed trustee in charge of fundraising and our members for their continued support". William Coleman, the trustee responsible for the Tram's restoration said: "we will have a certain amount of superficial work to do on the tram before it can enter service but won't know the full extent until we get to work once the tram is delivered." Crowle Peatland Railway - Crowle
Peatland Railway was formed to preserve the history and heritage of peat extraction in the Humberhead Peatlands – in particular, the story of the peatland railways. It s a project of the Isle of Axholme and Hatfield Chase Landscape Partnership and has been funded thanks to money from the National Lottery Heritage Fund. The maintenance shed was made possible with a grant from the SSE Keadby Wind Farm Fund and support from North Lincolnshire Council. Our volunteer members are crucial o the achievement of our aims. CORONAVIRUS SCAMMERS ABOUT!
Fraudsters are using the Coronavirus pandemic to try and get financial details from anxious folks. Read all about their efforts - and how to avoid them - in the attached leaflet. Keep safe - do not respond to an unexpected e-mail, and don't click on a link in such an e-mail. Fraudsters have mined e-mail addresses and are sending out messages in other people's names - check carefully to see if the wording is actually how your friend, relative, or workmate would write to you. And check for spelling mistakes - another common giveaway.

Lock down at the Nursery
Never in 23 years has Coneygarth Farm Day Nursery been shut for so long – what a strange time. The lockdown has been hard for everyone, from the choice to close the doors, to keeping our and staff mental health and wellbeing good to all the paperwork and red tape it has been exhausting. While most people do all they can to help the NHS by staying at home, business owners are in full swing keeping their accounts and fundamental running. On top of this the furlough accounts need collating and sorting out and to make it more difficult all our staff can not be furloughed by the government. Working countless hours however is just the tip of the iceberg, the emotional turmoil gets deep beneath the skin; how long will this last? When will the funding stop? What will the world be like after the pandemic? Despite these anxieties we need to keep slogging away doing what we can to survive and get back to normal life. Life carries on, on the farm. While arable farmers are self-isolating in their tractors sowing and planting all the crops, livestock farmers like ourselves are busy with all the springtime jobs including calving and lambing. It has just been so quiet around the farm, no excitement from the children, no noise and laughter, no questions, eerily quiet! And the children missed seeing the cows and calves being turned out to grass after a long winter, skipping and running around. The guinea pigs, tortoises, chickens etc., are all being cared for very well, with Derrick being designated eggs collector. All the seeds and plants have been planted up in the vegetable garden without the fun of doing it with the children At the time of writing we have had some rain and the grass hast started to grow (thank goodness) so we are looking forward to silage or hay time. Will the children be able to watch the machines working? - who knows! We are looking forward to getting back into business and welcoming all the staff and children back, we have had some new play equipment fitted and can’t wait to see the children enjoying it.

As a charity we are already under great financial pressures. The outbreak of Covid-19 (Coronavirus) only adds further pressure, as we’ve lost the ability to generate sustainable income streams overnight, this will severely impact on our limited financial resources. The reduction in income could have a devastating impact on our ability to continue caring for the thousands of local people who rely on our services annually. As a charity, we rely almost entirely on the donations and generosity of you, our local community. Sadly, following the cancellation and postponement of our fundraising activities, we’re now anticipating a loss of income in excess of £500,000. Even at this very difficult time, our Inpatient Unit remains fully operational, and our clinical team are working tirelessly 24/7 to support local patients and families at the hardest, most difficult time in their lives.
We’re excited to reveal that this year our Open Gardens scheme is going virtual! Due to the impact of Covid19 restrictions one of our longest running and best loved fundraisers is turning virtual for its 2020 programme. So we’re asking all green fingered gardening enthusiasts to get involved and digitally showcase their gardens to the public this summer. For further information please email llh.enquiries@nhs.net

Pastel painting to commemorate VE day.
I wanted to use genuine footage on which to base a painting and initially considered a military picture. I then thought as most of the scenes of European warfare were effectively over by 8th May 1945 (notwithstanding the absolute horrors of the concentration camps) it might be better to concentrate on the joys. I therefore combined two well known black and white photographs of celebrations with the intentions of showing still in black and white but emphasising the Union Jack in stark contrast. hence the result. The finished piece is 18"x26" (45X65cm)
