Community News Carrside playing field, Epworth was purchased in 1981 as an extension of Epworth War memorial field. This allowed local sports clubs, such as football, hockey and cricket to have a purpose built ground for their teams. This is completely maintained by volunteers wanting to provide something for the community. Sadly due to lack of interest and the final football team folded last year the field is no longer in use. We keep the field maintained in the hope that we can encourage new use in the future. If anyone is thinking of setting up any sports club and is in need of a venue please get in touch with either Tony 07971914352 or Gillian - 07711880863

The Isle of Axholme Family History Society meet in the Wesley Memorial Church Schoolroom, High Street, Epworth at 7-30 p.m. The next meeting will be on 27th June 2019. Chapterhouse Theatre Company to appear at Epworth Old Rectory Lincoln based Chapterhouse Theatre Company is bringing Pride and Prejudice to the Old Rectory in Epworth. This will be the first time this company has performed at the Rectory and I'm sure it won't be their last. This is a troupe of eight actors who will interpret the well loved drama often seen on television; the story of intelligent, high spirited and strong young women living in a time when women were considered inferior and had very few rights, just like our story of Susanna Wesley. The Bennett sisters story may be a hundred or so years later, but they, liker Susanna struggled with adversity and won through to a successful outcome. I don't need to tell you the plot - you probably know it from the films just as well as I do, but what will be interesting will be to see how the main characters are portrayed live on our formal lawn. Tickets can be obtained on line or from the Rectory, and do remember to come early and bring your picnic. For more information or enquiries please contact the Rectory on 01427 872268, or simply call in whenever we are open. Cath Fordham

YOUNG DANCERS HEAD FOR BLACKPOOL Pupils of the Everett-Fox School of Dance (EFSD) that make up the production group, headed for Blackpool over Easter for a chance to dance at the world-famous Blackpool Tower Ballroom. The young dancers are pictured in Blackpool.

The event was organised by Class Talent, which offers performing opportunities to dance schools all over the UK and arranged an evening’s entertainment at the prestigious world-famous Blackpool Tower Ballroom. The organisers commented that the performers were a credit to their teachers: the costumes and choreography were excellent. Well done, EFSD!

EPWORTH TOWN COUNCIL Report to the Annual Assembly of the Town Meeting Tuesday April 16th 2019 (abridged) The council year began with a two minute silence in memory of former Councillor Peter Davies. Cllr Mitchell was elected Chairman and Cllr Janney, Vice Chairman. The precept (the local element of the rates) rose from £57618.35 to £57861.73 for 2019/20; Under powers enshrined in the Local Government Act 1972 (section 137) the Council grant funded: The Old Rectory £1100.00 community event: The Isle Community Choir £250.00 event costs; Isle of Axholme Physically Handicapped Society £250.00 room hire and travelling costs; Purchased 52 poppies representing those lost from Epworth, “silent soldier” silhouettes and 80 event poppies for display in the High Street. (Council members led by the Chairman, attended events marking the cessation, the laying of wreaths and lighting the beacon.) Mechanics Institute £1000.00 clock restoration; Epworth Business Forum £200.00 Christmas fair entertainment; Epworth Music Day £1235.00 towards this increasingly popular event; The Old Rectory £1000.00 a floral tribute to Suzanna Wesley. The Town Council also funded summer holiday sports activities for children. Total grant funding £6945.64. Issues raised by the public included “the great dig” an exploration of the archaeology of Vinegarth; the Isle of Axholme and Hatfield Chase Landscape project was given permission to “dig” on Kings Head Croft. The Safer Neighbourhoods team attended for discussion on anti-social behaviour issues, discussions with North Lincolnshire Council have led to an agreement for improved lighting and the provision of additional CCTV coverage at Kings Head Croft. Residents complained about the amended bus services especially the effect on people from West End; so, the council wrote to North Lincolnshire Council and were informed that the bus company had the right to change the route with no notification. The council received complaints about the Turbary Road surface, Epworth Town Council spends significant sums to maintain the surface but not for additional stone. Complaints were received following the re-location of the Co-Operative store, additional deliveries, parked vehicles and speeding traffic made the area unsafe for pedestrians. North Lincolnshire Council will assess the problem. The Police and Crime Commissioner spoke to the council updating on the force improvements; the local Police Constable addressed the council in about anti-social behaviour. Trade Watch schemes were championed by the Safer Neighbourhoods team from North Lincolnshire Council, leaflets were distributed by councillors to try to protect the vulnerable from rogue traders. Active Lifestyles, fitness in the community such as litter picking and use of the “green gym” was promoted. Community Champions: Epworth Town Council nominated three people for the North Lincolnshire Community Champions awards; two came first, one second in their categories. Three community events were held, at the Epworth Imperial Hall and the Epworth Show; significant issues “parking in Epworth”, and, “anti-social behaviour”; leading to the formation of a “Heritage Project Committee” to discuss potential use of the Ivy Andrew Hall site. A petition from residents about parking was passed to North Lincolnshire Council as the authority responsible for parking.

Epworth and District Flower Club, although small are perfectly formed, and are very pleased to announce that they have raised £1,500 for the Alzheimer’s Society during 2018. The money has resulted from a coffee morning held by one of the Members, Freda Adams, and the Open Meeting in November, realising the monies donated. The Alzheimer’s Society was chosen by the Club in recognition of the vital research undertaken, together with their efforts for improvement in care and help to support to those suffering with all forms of dementia. Pictured are those present from the Club at their March meeting, which was a popular night of seasonal demonstrations given by the Club Members. The Club meets on the second Monday of the month at the Stephen Jones Hall, Haxey at 7.30p.m. If you enjoy flowers, would like to join the fun and friendship found within the Club, we would love to see you there, where a warm welcome can be anticipated.
