Let’s hope its an improvement to the rainy months of July last year when many events had to be cancelled. Rescue Day is on Saturday 13th July at 7 Lakes Country Park . If you remember last year it had to be cancelled, all the hard work put into it for local charities as well! Let’s make it a bumper event this year and raise as much money for charity as we can! Let the sun shine!

St Andrew's News The reordering work at the church is now well advanced, is not complete but is usable at weekends.

To date three weddings have taken place, several services , a choir concert and an art exhibition. It was evident at the choir concert that the acoustics are much improved. Enclosed is a photograph taken at the Art Exhibition which was part of the first ever Epworth Arts Festival. The exhibition was a resounding success and gave many members of the community to view the church.

Dunroamin K9 Dog Rescue are now based at Croft House Kennels in West Stockwith , and have many rescue dogs of different breeds looking for loving homes.

We are also grateful for donations of dog food, toys & treats, along with any items we can re-sell to raise much needed funds to help care for and feed our dogs.

Amateur Dramatics The Epworth Mowbray Players No. 13 by Anthony Catherall Christopher Buttrick a schoolboy made a refreshing debut to the Imperial Hall stage on 22nd March 1961 playing William (Bill) Harvey in “Dear Octopus” a comedy drama written in 1938

by Dodie Smith. Conversely to the last production a huge cast of 17 players crammed the dressing room behind the stage. There were many new faces joining Christopher on the boards that month. (a month when the USSR had just put a dog into orbit, a prelude to the first man in space Yuri Gagarin three weeks later on April 12, the space age had begun), including, Barbara Bennett, Angela Robinson, Dorothy Johnson, Margaret Selby, Ann Bell (schoolgirl) and Barbara Bennett.

The plot, ‘It is the weekend of Charles & Dora Randolph’s Golden Wedding, Four generations meet in the crowded house when the whole family is present. It is time for celebration when hopes and memories come back, a time to face old fears and anxieties a time for love…. Over the course of the weekend, the family members have to come to terms with their own inner quarrels, their jealousies and attitudes towards the family. It was certainly a box office winner: Bookings for the four-night presentation were well up on last year and apart from two back rows there was a full-house first night on the Wednesday. The play however had not been produced without travail-travail beyond the ordinary for amateur dramatic societies. One big handicap had been that the producer, Miss Gertrude Lees, had been ill during much of the rehearsal period, and even in the late stages of preparation had been able to supervise just once a week. On Miss Mary Housham, her deputy, therefore had fallen a great responsibility for what went right or wrong, according to good luck and good management, she was quite well satisfied. After the celebrations, at two-am on the Saturday night, the clocks went forward for British summertime.

Now & Then - Then & Now No. 51 by Anthony Catherall This month and every month see Epworth in bygone days and compare to today's images!

The 'Gables' & Tottermire Lane a postcard posted in 1932, above and below in March 2013.

The 1881 census showed there were seventeen people with the name TONGE living in Epworth. Two of them Gervas & Barbara Ann Tonge lived in the Gables with land stretching along the lane. Lots have happened in and around the Gables over the years. RO says, in the 1930's the word went round that there was as much underground as over-ground. The Isle of Axholme R.D.C was responsible for governing Epworth up until 1974 holding council meetings there. Indeed on March 9 1895, the I.O.A.R.D.C. Town Clerk George Newborn, advertised in The London Gazette for a Medical Officer of Health at a salary of ÂŁ35 per annum. More recently Epworth Town Council met there until 1998, also inside were offices of the Internal Water Board. In October 1998 the Gables was sold once more. The recent building of flats by a Belton builder on the northern side, caused local residents to strongly object. Meanwhile life goes on in and around the Gables with various businesses operating from there. A last fact. By far and away the most popular Epworth surname in 1881 was HILL(67) followed by GRAVEL (52) and BROWN (39). Many thanks Clare for allowing use of your lovely garden for my photograph.

What’s in a name?

I was recently confronted by an item which looked familiar, but which was handed to me and called an by unfamiliar name. I was given what was called a ‘chenille stick’.

You my ask what that is, but I believe that to you and I it is better known as a ‘pipe cleaner’, though of course its composition is what it always has been, specifically that of the new definition, a stick of chenille, tufted silk.

‘Pipe cleaner’ does not sound as formal, but at least it says what it does—or did.

What was a smoking accessory has now become transformed in purpose to a craft item in a range of appealing pastel colours-but it is still essentially the same.

At times like this no wonder we think that words cannot only explain but also confuse. However we perhaps more often call an item by its purpose, rather than what it actually is. The phrase ‘call a spade a spade’ comes to my mind!

Ideally the name of the item reflects both the make up of the item and the purpose for which it is used. Then there is no confusion. So it should be with the word ‘Christian.’ It speaks of our make up, we are people made by God, and formed in his own image, called by Christ. It speaks to of our purpose to put into action the new commandment of love for one another. It sounds straightforward, and it is when we are able both to act according to who we are, and what we are called to do.

During the recent Bank Holiday, a team of Air Cadets, from various Squadrons in Sector 2, South and West Yorkshire Wing were out in the Yorkshire Wolds completing their Silver Duke of Edinburgh Expedition. At the same time, a second team of Air Cadets were out also out completing their practice expeditions, either in preparation for their actual Silver or Gold expeditions.

The team, formed of cadets from Armthorpe, Crowle and Goole Squadron completed the 3 day, 32 mile expedition in the Yorkshire Wolds, exploring the rolling countryside. The team were again assisted by Staff from Crowle Squadron.

The route set off along a former railway, giving the group a gentle introduction to the area, before rising up into Goodmanham, before meandering to Londesborough, Nunburnholme and finally to the groups campsite near Kilmwick Percy. The group arrived in high sprits, but tired. The soon set up camp and were busy cooking their food.

The following day saw the group strike camp and head out towards Pocklington, which they skirted through, before heading out into the Wolds. The group soon climbed into Great Givendale, before heading into Millington and finally up and back into their campsite.

Again the group arrived in high spirits, warm but pleased to have made it back.

The final day the cadets headed back towards Millington, before descending into Millington Pastures, before climbing back up and out towards Huggate.

The group then had an easier route, following some of the dales, before arriving near Wetwang and their end point.

Flying Officer Victoria Docherty, of Crowle Squadron said “The weather was great for the expedition, it must have helped the cadets” she continued “They all put a lot of effort in and were all proud of what they achieved when they got to the end”.

Squadron Leader Iain Kirk, Officer Commanding Sector 2 said “All cadets did very well and I was impressed with their efforts around a challenging route”.

Expeditions and walking are just a few of the many opportunities Air Cadets offer to its members, both cadets and staff. Air Cadets is a youth organisation open to anyone aged 13-17. It is also open to those over 20 who wish to join as a staff and assist in the running of such events. Annual Spring Talent Show On the evening of the 2nd of May South Axholme Academy hosted its annual talent show, showcasing some of the school’s finest talent. There was an array of performances and acts all performed by students from the Academy. This year students who placed 2nd and 1st had the opportunity to express their talent further in the local Scunthorpe talent show, with the chance of winning a cash prize of £500. 17 acts performed to a jam packed audience in the school hall. The sold out performance was a crowd winner and has become one of the most popular events in the school calendar.

3rd place was awarded to Gabriella Spencer who performed her own rendition of the song ‘Shelter’

by Birdy. 2nd place was awarded to two young enthusiastic dancers, Ellie Petch and Nathan Williams, who incorporated a medley of different styles of dance into their intricately choreographed performance. The undeniable winner was awarded to a young talented singer called Robyn Hunt. She stunned the audience by performing her own song written by her personally, which was accompanied by her own guitar playing. She was highly commended by the panel of judges and received an excellent reaction from the audience.

The judges also gave a special mention to the most inspirational performance given by year 11 pupil Joseph Teasdale, who unfortunately had to pull out of last year’s show at the last minute. His performance of ‘Left Outside Alone’ by Anastasia received a standing ovation from members of the audience.

Good luck to all the acts that will be going through to the Scunthorpe rounds further into the year.

News from Belton All Saints Church of England Primary School Our Blue Tit Family Our Eco-Committee have continued to update us all, via a blog on our learning platform, on the progress of a pair of blue tits which have nested in one of our bird boxes. We have all been able to watch their progress on a screen in the library too. On May 20th we came into school to find 6 chicks had hatched and during the day more chicks hatched until we counted nine! They were all pink and did not have any feathers. Their mouths seem to be too big for their bodies. One of the adult birds was sitting on the chicks whilst the other one was flying in and out of the box with food for the chicks. The adult sitting on the nest kept cheeping at the chicks. During the next three weeks we watched as now eight chicks were regularly fed and we saw them grow and develop feathers.

On 10th June we came in to school to find that that all eight chicks had flown the nest. A true success story!

Year 3/4 Production During the first half term Year 3 and 4 were busy learning songs and rehearsing for their production called ‘Tuishi Pamoja’, which is Swahili for ‘we want to live together’. This is a musical based on an African story about friendship under the African skies. The story centres on relationships between giraffes and zebras, celebrates diversity and also teaches the importance of accepting those who are different from us. The spring term topic for Year 3 and Year 4 was based on the continent of Africa and in particular the country of Zambia.

The production went very well and was performed for both children and parents.

Year 6 Trip to Lincoln Cathedral On 21st May, Year 6 made their annual visit to Lincoln Cathedral along with many other Church of England schools.

The children were split into two groups. One group was taken on a guided tour around the cathedral and told all about the history of its different parts- a favourite part proved to be the story of the ‘Lincoln Imp’ and the children enjoyed trying to find him. The second group were treated to a discussion about bee keeping. We were shown equipment which beekeepers use and the speaker was very informative. The children were also shown actual bees in a small hive (which was see-through as well as escape-proof!) which meant we had a lovely view of the queen bee. Staff and pupils then sampled three types of honey and decorated a candle with a little bee. We then swapped over.

After the activities we all met up and had lunch in the chapter house. After lunch we assembled with the other schools for a celebration service which began with a procession of all the school banners. We all sang ‘Here I am Lord’ – a hymn which Year 6 had learnt previously. There were prayers, readings and then schools were invited to explain and show the types of activities which they had undertaken during the morning session

THE TRENTSIDE FEDERATION (ST MARTIN’S AND WEST BUTTERWICK C OF E PRIMARY SCHOOLS) SCHOOL NEWS Following on from our last School News, I am pleased to report that our planting troughs are now in situ at West Butterwick School and we are growing our first crop of sugarsnap peas! Following this, the children have already expressed a wish to add strawberries and purple carrots to the seasonal planting plan as it moves through a full cycle over the next 12 months or so. Mrs Marshall, a local resident has kindly donated some leeks and so we should have a good variety all in all!

Staying on the theme of food, the Foundation Stage pupils (Nursery and Reception) of both schools have held medieval banquets recently. As an extension to their learning linked to castles and castle life, our youngest pupils had the chance to come to school dressed in costume (Knights and Princesses were popular themes) to participate in jousting, medieval dancing and period games of the time. It was very enjoyable. No horses were injured in the jousting as we used inflatables!

A medieval banquet is to now lead on to fish and chips, as our Key Stage 1 children (Years 1 and 2) will enjoy an educational visit to the seaside towards the end of June, linked to their geography work. Our ‘Infant Geographers’ have been comparing and contrasting regional seaside/coastal towns such as Cleethorpes, Skegness and Mablethorpe. In terms of gaining an awareness of the wider world, a regional comparison led to developing their global knowledge looking at coastal features of such far-flung places as Bondi Beach, New South Wales in Australia. The children are now looking forward to exploring some of these coastal features first-hand although not on Bondi Beach, but at Cleethorpes! Key Stage 2 pupils at West Butterwick visited Idle Valley near Retford, a few weeks ago, to carry out some pond dipping and really enjoyed learning about the variety of wildlife and how the habitat of a pond supports their existence. Junior pupils at both schools have continued to extend their knowledge of the Vikings and learned more about the Viking way of life, through a visit from Helga, a Viking Time Traveller who happened to call in to St Martin’s Owston Ferry! She told them all about Viking raids, longhouses, food, clothes and religious and cultural beliefs. The children were fascinated and asked lots of insightful questions.

The special Viking Week at St Martin’s ended in an authentic Viking meal of rye bread, vegetable stew and rice pudding, which the children had a hand in making.

Bringing ‘School News’ back to the present day now, we had a ‘football’ focus in both schools for our School Councils as the West Butterwick Juniors Football Club Chairperson (Noreen Smith) and Treasurer (Alan Jones) generously donated £245 to each school in our Federation and told them all about the history of the club, that now sadly no longer runs. This money was raised by the Club over the time it started, approximately sixteen years ago. The two football kits that remain are being sent to Uganda for the benefit of children who play football in East Africa.

The School Council at St Martin’s welcomed a Dog Warden in to school on Friday 7th June to talk to the pupils about being a responsible dog owner. Paul McCurragh did an impressive job in answering all of the children’s questions and will be visiting West Butterwick School next to give his talk. Competition entries for ‘Scoop the Poop’ were judge by Paul and Cllr Jan Williams during the visit to St Martin’s. First prize went to Brooke McKenna with three runners up :- Travis May, Sarah Sellars and Jackson Swales. Congratulations to these children. Thanks also to Cllr Jan Williams for donating the prizes. We are now looking ahead to everything that June and July brings to the school year.... Sports Afternoons and Leavers’ Services. I am sure we all remember the intense rain we experienced last June, so let’s hope that the weather is kind to us this year, for Sports Afternoon in particular!

Axholme Camera Club News Letter Tuesday 28th May 2013 the Camera Club held its Annual General meeting in the Church Hall Haxey. The attendance was good and the business was concluded reasonable quickly. The chairman gave a special thank you to Ken Thompson who after many years has decided to stand down from his position on the committee.

Following this the committee was then re-elected with the chairman expressing his thanks to all its members for the hard work through the year. The chairman also emphasised that many of our Judges and Speakers through the year had openly made reference to the friendliness and the enjoyable atmosphere of the club. There was then time for questions from the members, after which the AGM was closed.

There was then a print knockout competition organised by our Treasurer with each member entering four images of any subject, size or colour. Four images were displayed at a time and the members then voted by a show of hands, the one with most votes went on to the next round. This went on till there was only four images let standing. The overall winner was Simon Knight with a great monochrome images of his pet dog. Well done to all who entered and congratulation to Simon.

The following week the members took the opportunity to bring their camera to have a roam around the outside of the Church. Unfortunately we could not get access to the inside on this occasion however this did not stop most members from enjoying the evening sunshine in the church grounds.

Following this short photo shoot the members Storm over Balmoral were treated to a Cream Tea with Scones and Castle Pavlova including strawberries etc. During the Cream Teas we presented the trophy's to the winning members, these are the Emlyn Perrit Trophy and Several Money Gifts Certificates supplied by our sponsors “Tom Dennis of Scunthorpe”, these are awarded for the highest points scored for competitions through the year.

It was a clean sweep with Jean Goodburn taking the prize money and Trophy, the runner up was George Fiddler followed by David Livsey. Well done and congratulation to Jean.

The committee will be meeting over the next few weeks to ensure we have a interesting programme for next season.

Dear readers, Park on the left-hand side of the road if possible – make it always if it’s at night.

In a car park you should reverse into parking spaces. This will make it safer when you’re driving out and more fuel-efficient as you’ll be manoeuvring with a warm engine. Also, it’s easier to steer into a small space backwards rather than forwards – steering effectively with the rear wheels is better for manoeuvring.

If reversing into a space, try to start by manoeuvring the car so that the space is straight behind you the less turning you have to do backwards, the easier most people find it to judge.

Some buildings have signs saying to park nose in, because of where air intakes are for the ventilation and where car exhaust pipes will be when parked backwards – look for the signs so you don’t gas the occupants!

Car sides are often not straight, so watch other things than just the car next to you when lining up in a space.

A higher seating position inside the car makes it easier to manage knowing where the corners are when in a tight space.

Use your mirrors as well as looking over your shoulder to check how close to things you are, and how straight your vehicle is. And there’s no shame in peering out of an open window to get a better look.

At the supermarket, try and park away from trolley parks and corners to avoid your car being damaged.

Think about which bit of the car you need access to when you get back to it – so if you have heavy items to lift into the boot, park so it is easily accessible.

When reversing in a space, the rear wheels are the point where a car “pivots”, so watching where they are relative to the corner of a wall/other car is really useful. Once they are past the corner, the way you steer relative to it to avoid the corner changes.

Parking is now a staple part of the L-test, and it can be quite surprising to see how often people struggle with it, and see the task as particularly stressful.
