Special Constables are members of the public who volunteer their time in order to support their regular colleagues and provide a valuable link between the police and the local community. They are warranted officers who have the same powers as a regular officer, wear the same uniform and carry the same equipment. Special Constables: Have the same powers as police officer colleagues Assist in major incidents Flexible hours that fit around your personal circumstances As a Special Constable you will have the same warranted powers as your regular colleagues and as such it is important that you receive a certain level of training prior to being attested (sworn in) and being allowed to engage with members of the public. Because of time constraints, the level of training you will receive is not the same as a regular officer but will give you the knowledge and skills you will need to carry out your duties as a Special Constable. Once you have completed your initial training you will be expected to perform a minimum of 16 hours operational duties a month. If you are interested in becoming a Special Constable please visit our website www.wearehumbersidespecials.co.uk

What next for the Old Rectory?
Another successful event over and the Rectory returned to normality, but for how long? The flower festival with the Botanical Engineers is really finished with the last bit of greenery and flowers now removed from the house, but it was great while it lasted. All the visitors were surprised, impressed and wowed by the art installations that had been created and which put a completely new slant on the story of the Wesleys here in Epworth. The links between the installations and the story were thought provoking, and even people who thought they has seen it all were suitably impressed. The Craft Fair was up to it's usual high standard with a good mix of hand crafted goods on sale, and the music provided over the weekend by a number of local musicians was very good with lots of variety to please all musical tastes, and even got a few people dancing to it. Clarty Sough amused with self penned folk songs, The Iron Town Foot Tappers lived up to their name, even setting a few feet tapping with an impromptu performance in the Refectory to the delight of the visitors enjoying tea and cake. The Brown Spearing Duo featuring Rebecca on Sax entertained us on both days, as did Terry Stables, Andrew Taylor and our compere Goff Fordham. John, Ian and Richard, members of Ep'th Folk club, and Out on a L.I.M. also played their part in entertaining the visitors and stallholders - all playing manfully through the rain on both days. But now it's time to prepare for our next extravaganza - Chapterhouse Theatre Company from Lincoln performing Pride and Prejudice on the formal lawn on Sunday the 14th of July. The cast of eight will bring the story of the Bennett girls and their trials and tribulations which so closely mirror parts of the Wesley girls stories, although I do have to say Mrs Bennett is nothing like Susanna Wesley, who was highly intelligent and strong minded as opposed to Mrs Bennett's flighty, vacuous behaviour as a parent. It will be interesting to see a new rendering of the relationships within the play. I do have one slight disappointment to announce though, Colin Firth will not be playing Mr Darcy - sorry ladies!! Tickets are available on line or at the Rectory, and please do remember to come early and bring the picnic to enjoy prior to the performance. Any queries to 01427 874422, and always remember - there are multiple volunteering opportunities at the rectory, so do give us a call to discuss these. Cath Fordham

I am currently holding a fundraiser with a difference for Bluebell Wood Childrens Hospice. We are asking for Buddies to be donated so that one can be given to every children currently using the services of the hospice. Our buddies are the softest teddies that have a concealed pocket that holds a fragrance pak that fragrances the teddy. The fragrance is very comforting to children, which relaxes them and also can help them to sleep. Children quickly become attached to their buddy. Fragrance evokes memories, so god forbid the worst happens, the parents will then keep the buddy that smells of their child. Full buddy donations are welcome but even part donation contributions are very gratefully accepted. I can put the donations together to get the buddies. I’m sure we all want to help to bring joy and comfort to these children in their darkest days. I am also donating £5 to the hospice for every buddy donated. If you would like to help please get in touch with me. Let’s brighten these little ones days.
Thank you to Epworth Post Office, Parkin Butchers, Shingler’s Plumbing & Heating and London Fashion House for your Buddy donations. Gina

Several members of the Epworth and District Flower Club were absent because of holidays or ill health so a smaller than usual audience, which did include two visitors, was welcomed to the June meeting. The only business mentioned was a reminder of the July luncheon in support of NSPCC and Diabetes UK and the availability of tickets, which are selling fast. Two young ladies were then introduced, Caroline Young of Violet and Willow and Jan Falkingham, a British flower grower of Field and Bloom. Jan began, saying their evening may have a “Bohemian Vibe” and maybe it did. As they both talked about their businesses and how they had evolved Caroline created the most natural arrangements using flowers grown by Jan. Jan talked about the difficulties of producing quantities of identical flowers and foliage in this climate but explained how she was able to use networking and together a few like businesses were able to develop a wholesale seasonal business. She talked of the difficulties of growing from seed and the use of polytunnels and weeding and so many normal hurdles met in growing. But to develop a business there had to be ways round the obstacles and Jan just talked so naturally and with such enthusiasm.

Caroline explained how the market for British flowers was developing and people are understanding that arrangements for weddings and table settings and events do not have to consist of exactly identical flowers but can be just as beautiful with more individual flowers. She created several extremely attractive arrangements without any reference to the more usual mechanics and principles we have become accustomed to in demonstrations. Though she did mention how her move away from Oasis led her to use moss and chicken wire or a similar material. She told us how she does flowers for weddings and similar occasions and her business includes providing opportunities for people to develop their own ideas from flowers she supplies. Both speakers made reference to imported flowers and the necessity of their existence to complement those grown in Britain. They also mentioned the tips given by some of the Dutch flower importers. Interaction with the members enabled several tips to be acquired. Together they produced some hand tied bouquets using roses, of which one had the most wonderful perfume, alstroemeria, scabious, delightful sweet peas, delphinium and other very pretty British flowers. These and the arrangements Caroline had calmly and quietly created were then raffled and several people were lucky enough to take a prize home. Coffee was served after the usual vote of thanks and there was the opportunity to chat with the demonstrators and socialise with group members. One of our visitors came along as a result of reading last month’s report in the Arrow. She said she found us friendly and will certainly come next month. Maybe you would like to join us on Monday, 8th July in the Stephen Jones Community Hall Haxey? We will meet at 7.30pm to watch a demonstration by Sandra Meakin. She entitles her talk “Déjà vu”.

New group encourages adults with dementia to live In the Moment As Vicky McClure says in BBC1’s My Dementia Choir – “Life doesn’t end with a dementia diagnosis”. darts (Doncaster Community Arts) runs a music and storytelling-based group to encourage adults living with dementia, and their carers, to take part in creative activities. This welcoming and social group, called In the Moment, is led by a range of professional musicians and wordsmiths including Ian McMillan, one of the UK's best-known contemporary poets. Dementia and loss of memory can be lonely and isolating and darts invites you to come along to The Point, make friends, have fun and feel better. In the Moment takes place on the 2nd and 4th Mondays of the month from 1.30pm – 3.30pm. All sessions are free. The Point, 16 South Parade, Doncaster DN1 2DR. The group is part of a wider programme of dementia-friendly culture with Cast, Heritage Doncaster and Home Instead Doncaster (the full programme is at www.inthemomentdoncaster.co.uk) funded by Arts Council England and support from Public Health (Doncaster Council) as part of its strategy in promoting dementia awareness. darts has been developing creative programmes with people living with dementia and their carers for the last decade. These programmes enrich peoples’ lives, enable them to meet new people and have fun. darts' programmes also gently challenge those who come – keeping brains active and creating new shared memories. BBC1’s My Dementia Choir is scientifically proving the positive effects that music and regular singing has on people’s memory, speech and emotions. As Professor Sebastian Crutch says on the programme, “Music wildly stimulates many parts of the brain – it links into the reward system which is the oldest part of the brain.” Studies have proved that singing and music can be an effective intervention to maintain and improve active involvement, social, emotional and cognitive skills, and decrease behaviour problems of those with living with dementia.
