ROYAL AIR FORCE LINDHOLME Adapted and Edited for publication by Anthony Catherall cknowledgement to Margaret Draper By October 1943, when the first fully trained crews had left the station to go on to the Lancaster Finishing School at RAF Hemswell, it was obvious that the Bomber Command offensive against Germany was going to play a major part in the Allied victory effort. In a sense therefore the period between then and the end of the war was the most decisive in the station’s history for it was then that the station really justified its existence. From January 1944, when the first complete statistics appeared in the Station Diary, the station had a remarkably successful training record as the following summary shows:
Number of Trained Crews leaving RAF Lindholme January 1944 – May 1945 Jan 44 Feb 44 Mar 44 Apr 44 May 44 Jun 44

(During the winter months the numbers obviously dropped because of adverse weather conditions) Originally the Lindholme trained crews went on to RAF Hemswell to complete their conversion to Lancasters but from November 1944, when the Lancasters were introduced at Lindholme, the crews went straight on to operational flying. By early 1945 the station strength was 2700 and eleven nationalities were working on the camp. (1) There were a few incidents of note: there are records of isolated German attacks on the camp and towards the end of 1944 three Halifaxes crashed on one night as they took off; in the same month an Australian instructor, Flying Officer Marsh, was killed when he walker into the rotating propellers of an aircraft on a dark night. By the time the war in Europe ended the Station was an all Lancaster unit and had been transferred from No 1 Group to No 7 Group, a newly formed training group. The base organisation remained and was renamed No 71 base. It is recorded that VE Day was celebrated quietly on the station and certainly one young trainee did not enjoy himself as much as he might have hoped: “On VE Day, I was unlucky enough to be on a one week course at Lindholme. The evening before the official announcement, the station Commander assembled all the “course” officers, warned us that he didn’t want any drunkenness or other ungentlemanly conduct, and sent us on our way. The result was I spent the most miserable day of my whole war, tramping around the pubs in the local area, trying to find some convivial spirits – with no luck at all.” (2) (1)

Isle of Axholme Police Report Jane.proud@humberisde.pnn.police.uk Claire.hutchinson@humberside.pnn.police.uk
With the lighter nights and the warmer weather please be vigilant as to leaving doors and windows open. It only takes a minute for someone to enter your property and take your valuables. Don’t leave handbags, phones tablets etc. on view when you are not in the room. There has recently been a spate of vehicles being taken from driveways with Keys across the Isle. Please be mindful of leaving car keys in plain sight or near your front door. Lock them away or take them to bed with you. Car thief’s are now using sophisticated devices to clone keys and steel your vehicle. Don’t make it easy for them. My Community Alert is now well established, if you haven’t yet joined sign up for free at www.mycomminityalert.co.uk or stop one of us in the street and we will sign you up. www.humberside.police.uk CRIME PREVENTION NEWS: Driver Advice to Combat Car 'Key' Jammers Please check your doors are locked before leaving your vehicle as there has been a recent spate of thefts from cars with the use of electronic car key jammers. Thieves have been using hand-held devices that block signals sent by drivers to lock their vehicles, before entering their unattended, unlocked car and stealing valuables. There has been a recent spike in thefts from vehicles which show no signs of entry, where the driver clearly recalls locking their doors and are confident they can be attributed to thieves blocking their signals remotely. Drivers are pressing their key fob and walking away from their vehicle thinking they’ve locked it, but they are having their frequency blocked by thieves. The only sure way to know your car is locked is to check it manually. If your indicator lights flash, wing mirrors fold in, or the horn beeps when you lock it, this is a sure sign your vehicle has locked, but the failsafe method is to check your door handle manually before you walk away. Basic jamming devices can have a range of 75 metres and affect a whole car park at the time of activation. We are eager to bring this issue and the associated crime prevention advice to the attention of motorists, to enable you to protect your property. The issue of key jamming affects forces nationally and has previously been highlighted by the National Police Chiefs’ Council.

“ This little cutie is Scamp, an 8 year old Yorkshire Terrier cross Jack Russell who is looking for a new home. Scamp is a very happy, friendly chap who is ok with other laid-back dogs, but not small children or cats. He would really suit an active older home where he gets lots of fuss and attention, and has a nice garden to run around in. Scamp is neutered, fully vaccinated and micro-chipped. If you would like to come and meet this smashing fellow, give Isle Rescue a call on 01427 728705.

Another successful event at Epworth Old Rectory On Sunday morning the heavens shone down on us instead of opening according to the dire predictions of heavy rain from the Met Office. We had a gloriously fine day for all our stalls and visitors alike. A large part of the remit for the Rectory in the last few years has been to increase our community involvement, and for the last 2 years we have certainly done that. With this years Country Fayre We had over 30 local community groups, craftspeople and entertainers on the day. The Isle of Axholme Lions brought along information and the bottles for "the message in a bottle" campaign. They were informing people who may have long term medications or illnesses that it was important to have your medications list available if it ever became necessary to call for emergency services. The "message in the bottle" is the list of medications which you put in the bottle and keep it in the fridge. Emergency services are aware of the system and know to look in the fridge for the bottle - A very useful community service. The WI, Isle of Axholme and Hatfield Chase Lanscape group, British Legion, Isle Rescue, Belton guides and rangers, Were also among the local groups in attendance. Entertainment during the day came via North Lincs Ukelele Band, South Axholme School Wind band, Attitude Theatre Art, Tatterfoals Morris men, and last but not least Ep'th Folk., who kept us entertained throughout the day in the open mic gazebo. Some of our youngest visitors enjoyed meeting all kinds of different creatures, from lambs , birds of prey, snakes , spiders and giant snails. Although it was hard work to set the event up and prepare the site, with more of the volunteers working hard to provide information and refreshments for our visitors on the day, it has been a very worthwhile event, raising, not just the profile of the Rectory, but of the whole area. Remember a warm welcome is always there at the Rectory if you visit us, and in the area if you come from outside it to visit the many attractions in the Isle and the surrounding towns. Do see the Rectory Facebook page and website for more information on our opening times and future events. If you would like to be involved a s a volunteer do contact us and find out how you can become one of us - call Gill on 01427 872268. Cath Fordham

Epworth and district Flower Club News On a perfect summer’s evening members arrived in the Stephen Jones Community Hall in Haxey to welcome Sue Spencer an Area Demonstrator from Sheffield. Her demonstration was entitled “Rhapsody of Flowers” Sue gave a dictionary definition of the word rhapsody, which it seems has a variety of meanings and by the end of the evening the flowers must have embraced them all. She began with an arrangement which she called “The Garden” and her further arrangements were untitled but just beautiful. Into her first arrangement Sue placed fern, Solomons seal, fatshedera, hosta, chocolate coloured heuchera as her foliage and then pale blue and light pink small flowers, rust coloured spray roses, a variety of colours of stocks, sweet Williams and alstroemeria. Astilbe, alchemilla and freesias completed the arrangement which was exactly like a summer’s garden. It was quite delightful but Sue wasn’t satisfied with one arrangement, she added two small bouquets of similar flowers. Sue had to reach almost above her own height for her second arrangement. This time a very different effect was achieved. She used looped cordyline leaves, contorted hazel, deep red roses (Naomi), burgundy carnations and a small spray of orchids. It was a rather more minimal arrangement but she created a similar one lower down her stand and complemented both with a beautiful, large display which she placed on the floor. Yet another very different result was achieved with the third creation. Sue used a large round base. She placed shiny, looped aspidistra leaves and a variegated green and white leaf around the outside and hebe in the centre. Very tall longiflorum lilies stood upright in the centre and a few large “blousey” but beautiful white peonies were inserted before Sue laid small white orchids across the arrangement horizontally. Stunning! As she arranged her flowers Sue gave a little commentary about her love of gardens and plants and her interaction with her family and the community. She often made reference to age related incidents, with which many of us could identify! An interesting, large upright piece of wood was the basis of the fourth arrangement. Bronze coloured chrysanthemums had been carefully inserted into a vertical hollow but then Sue used a circular container into which she arranged a sprig of conifer, elaeagnus, and a number of golden, mini gerbera which she trimmed to differing heights and the prettiest roses named Revival. They were golden beneath with deep orangey red edges. The arrangement was placed in front of the wood and was extremely effective. Finally Sue produced a large urn across which she inserted horizontal ferns. She used hosta, looped aspidistra leaves and senecio to hide the mechanics and then added pink lilies, again horizontally. To complete this arrangement she added pink roses of different types, purple stocks, astilbe of a similar deep pink shade and alstroemeria. Then to conclude Sue added a similar arrangement but made in a traditional triangle shape. Sue transmitted such a love of flowers and plants that everyone had a thoroughly enjoyable summer evening. A vote of thanks was given by one of the members before everyone hoped their raffle ticket would bring them a prize. As usual we enjoyed delicious refreshments and some conversation. The July meeting will be a presentation by a new member. Sarah was involved with the NhS garden at Chelsea Flower Show and will entertain the Flower Club with some details. Members were also asked to bring along any surplus pots or containers and plants to sell on a sales table. The proceeds will go to the chosen charity for this year. It is anticipated that there will also be an opportunity for a general social get together. As usual new members and visitors will be welcome: Monday, 9th July, 7.30pm in the Stephen Joseph Community hall Haxey.
