Isle Group of the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust Thursday January 3rd 2019 Stephen Jones Hall (rear of the Methodist Chapel), Low Street, Haxey On Thursday January 3rd we start off the New Year with our annual Member's Photographic Evening. This is always a popular meeting, with members bringing a small number of images on any topic to share with the group. The photographs don't have to be about wildlife, they can be on anything of interest so we generally have a wide range of things to see. You don't have to be a brilliant photographer either so don't be shy, bring along your images on a memory stick and share your stories with us all. Everyone is welcome, you don't have to be a member of the Wildlife Trust. Entrance fee is £1 and there is a raffle and refreshments. For further information about the local Trust group please contact Tony Lee on 01427 753831 or Chris Trinder on 01427 872051. Details about the group are also on the Lincolnshire Trust web site under area groups.

ROYAL AIR FORCE LINDHOLME Adapted and Edited for publication by Anthony Catherall acknowledgement to Margaret Draper In August 1948, No 230 OCU had the honour of receiving a unit badge. It is believed that the unit was the first unit, as opposed to station, in the country to receive one. The badge, designed by Squadron Leader Davies, consisted of a sword over a heraldic fountain and bore the motto ‘Temper and Sword’. The Yorkshire Evening News report of the presentation mentioned that “since No 230 OCU was reformed 21 months ago, it had turned out 130 full bomber crews, who represented 10,000 flying hours.” (1) Towards the end of 1948 there was a possibility of No 230 OCU being transferred to RAF Mildenhall. This move was connected with the replacement of the Lancasters by Lincolns and the fact that the runway space at Lindholme was too restricted for their use. Despite this, the move to Mildenhall was eventually cancelled although the transition from Lancasters to Lincolns went on in November and December 1948. The cancellation of the move was in fact only a temporary one because in February 1949 the OCU moved to Royal Air Force Scampton and Lindholme began to prepare for the arrival of the Central Bomber Establishment from Royal Air Force Marham. The new unit eventually arrived in April 1949, but by August 1949 the possibility of its disestablishment is noted in the Unit Diary. These rumours proved to be correct for in November 1949 the unit was disabled. It is impossible to chronicle the history of Lindholme with a great degree of accuracy over the next few months as both the unit diary and MOD (Air) records are incomplete. We know that, at some stage between November 1949 and August 1950, when the records are again complete, Lindholme housed the Armament Division of the Royal Air Force Technical College and that the station was therefore a part of Technical Training Command. In November 1950 it was back in No 1 Group as the Technical College Division moved out. There was an element of doubt about the station’s future; at one stage in the month it was to provide “a base and RAF element for the of No 341 Bombardment Squadron of the United States Air Force” (2) Within a week this decision was cancelled and the station’s future was again in doubt. However, the United States could not be denied. Later in 1951 an American Air Base Transport Squadron under a Major Scott Davidson did arrive at Lindholme. Meanwhile a decision on the station’s role was finally made and it became the home of No 5 Air Navigation School, flying Wellingtons and Ansons, in March 1951. Lindholme was now a part of No 21 Group of Flying Training Command. The early days of No 5 ANS must have been difficult. One of the early course commanders remembers it as a time of utter chaos. “for a while flying over the sea was forbidden because the only Mae West on the station seemed to be worn by the ground-crew aircraft marshaller” and “maps, charts and log books were in short supply and had to be scrounged from neighbouring airfields”. (3) He also recalls sitting in his office marking navigation exercises and dodging lumps of concrete while pneumatic drills were at work in the same building installing a central heating system.

Epworth and District Flower Club Open Meeting November 2018 Approximately 120 ladies sat expectantly in the hall of South Axholme Academy to see Andrew Grisewood present his demonstration “Unwrap the Season”. The audience was welcomed by Anne Everatt and an invitation to join the club or attend as a visitor was extended to all. Thanks were expressed to everyone who had helped with preparation and especially the member of staff of South Axholme Academy who had helped with technical logistics. Anne also reminded the audience that the proceeds would be going to the Alzheimer’s Society this year. Then, with a musical fanfare, Andrew Grisewood in his glittery shirt and accompanying bling was welcomed onto the bare stage. Olly his assistant was welcomed too. Andrew began with a frame holding two baskets with glittery branches and he added trailing ivy, cascading variegated holly, polystichum fern and Paddy’s pride foliage before inserting green chrysanthemums, red hypericum berries, champagne carnations and a deeper shade of cream carnations with a pink tinge. Andrew’s commentary included information about the song of the Twelve Days of Christmas and to complete his arrangement Andrew added some vintage appearance pears to suggest the partridge in a pear tree. As the musical accompaniment played Olly brought in a further similar arrangement making a stunning, opening, three tier display with a partridge apparently sitting on a nest on the top tier. Next Andrew used a basic looking plant pot with an erect substantial tree branch on which hung a large decorative red bell. To create a different tree shape Andrew showed the audience, with the help of Olly, how to attach small branches of ilex berries with brown cable ties. He proceeded to add a red velvet bow which he made so rapidly, imitation poinsettias, and robins. He theme was retro and he placed the arrangement beside an old fashioned street lamp and a model Santa. He even introduced the old fashioned Fairy liquid bottle on which many Santas have been produced, Blue Peter style. Much applause and more music….delightful. For the third arrangement Andrew had a large rectangular upright frame onto which were already attached three large branches of spruce sprayed to appear like snowflakes. There was also a roughly horizontal piece of driftwood. Around these mechanics Andrew positioned western hemlock branches, noble fern, senecio and white sprayed ivy leaves. Once positioned beneath another similar arrangement tiny lights were lit creating a very cool effect surmounted by a crescent of moon. Next was a large snow scene dome. Another reminder of the past. Andrew proceeded to use a length of rubus, some leather leaf fern and asparagus all of which were sprayed in tones of gold or white. For his finale Andrew produced a metal crown frame to represent the first of the three kings. He used beautiful Chinese pheasant feathers to produce a plume effect and continued to insert pale orange orchids and similar shaded anthurium flowers.
In January the Flower Club will have a seasonal meal at the Epworth Tap and the meeting on 11th February 2019 will be in the usual meeting place of the Stephen Jones Community Hall at 7.30pm and will be the A.G.M. when scrapbooks will be on display. We hope you feel encouraged to join us.

Local husband and wife team have been fundraising since June 2018, trying to raise valuable funds for Weston Park Hospital in memory of Jonathan Exton. Debbie says “The challenge was for myself and my husband Andy to run a 10k race every month for the rest of the year. I had ran a bit previously but Andy was quite new to running and so definitely a challenge for him”.
“For those who know me, I started running nearly 18months ago and it certainly didn’t come naturally! But I have persevered and Christmas 2017 I managed to persuade Andy to give it a go too! So we both signed up for three 10k races one in June, September and November to try and raise some funds to help Weston Park Hospital. Someone agreed to donate if we did one every month for the rest of the year ..... seemed like an easy challenge at first - the hot summer didn't enter our heads and made if very hard”
“A big thanks to everyone who has donated to this worthy cause, we really appreciate it”. Our just giving page is
https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/Debbie-Bradwell Weston Park Cancer Charity exists to create a better life for those living with and beyond cancer. It is committed to fund things the NHS alone cannot provide including; practical help to those in need, emotional support to those in despair, enhanced care for those who need it most.
