Isle of Axholme Gardening Club continues their programme of events. OnTues 12 January :The making of Rewela Cottage NGS Garden– John Plant, Skewsby, York Competition = Three hyacinths grown in a pot All events start at 7.30pm, Imperial Hall, Chapel, Street, Epworth, DN9 1HQ.

During 2015 the Belton Autumn Club with other friends has enjoyed free outings to Kirton Lindsey Garden Centre and Hornsea and the latest to Gilberdyke Garden Centre on Wednesday 2nd December. The Club, founded by Joan Biddle around twelve years ago has flourished ever since. The Club meets in Belton Playing Field Pavilion every Thursday afternoon from 2 pm until 4 pm. It is open to anyone over the age of 55 and new members are always warmly welcomed. If you feel like joining pleasant company for various games, light refreshments, a raffle and a game of bingo, all for £1.50 per week, them come along.

A big thank you to everyone who supported the Tombola stall held at Walkers Nurseries Christmas Market on the 19th November, in aid of the Alzheimer's Society. We had a very busy day, raising £503.00 plus a further £60 was given in donations on the day.

I would also like to thank Walkers Nurseries for placing collecting boxes in their nursery and coffee shop. In the last 9 months they have raised £93.00, I am very grateful to all who contributed.

Recently there was a minor furore about a cinema advert produced for the Church of England which showed a variety of people saying the Lord’s Prayer one line at a time. It was refused by the company that exhibits cinema advertisements for fear of causing offence. The Archbishop of Canterbury expressed surprise at this but it surprised me that the Church thought such an advert would be acceptable. Apparently we only see the Crawleys in the middle of a meal in ‘Downton Abbey’ because they would have said Grace at the beginning which could not possibly be shown in these enlightened secular times.

Perhaps the point of the advert is that the Church acknowledges that prayer is increasingly uncommon in the UK, and that it needs promoting. It has been said that it is not so much the words of the Lord’s Prayer, but the idea that perfectly normal people might say it as part of their perfectly normal lives that is so disturbing. In trying to reach a wider audience the Church was only promoting its message in the way that companies like Ford and McDonalds do all the time.

In some ways the fuss has drawn more attention than if the advert was shown before ‘Star Wars’ so that is a good thing. It promotes a new website justpray.co.uk which gives help in praying often by perfectly normal people.

Try it, It’s worth a look.

Full details can be viewed on www.humberside.police.uk Ongoing Issues Thurlow Playing Fields = There have been instances of youths congregating and causing nuisance towards people attending the area committing criminal damage in the park area, especially damage to the Basketball court area. The team are tackling this by providing high visibility patrols. We are appealing to the public to report any damage to the area or even their own property and to also report any suspicious activities. Update = The Neighbourhood Team are to patrol this area due to issues starting to arise. If you do see anyone committing acts of Criminal Damage or anti-social behaviour towards you or other residents in the area please contact us on 101. We will be working with other partnership agencies to tackle this issue and anyone found to be causing Criminal Damage or anti-social behaviour will be dealt with positively.

Belton Greenway = Rubbish has been dumped on the green lane around Belton particularly the old railway line. Update = Although there has not been many reports recently of rubbish being dumped, it has now come to our attention that unknown persons are now starting to dump rubbish again.

Please make use of council facilities re the disposal of your rubbish.

Speed AWARENESS = Humberside Police, in association with the Safer neighbourhoods and other Partnerships, are to initiate and manage a speed awareness campaign, on our local roads.

Update= There have been reports of vehicle driving at speed and in a reckless manor on several of the roads around the ISLE OF AXHOLME, so because of this it has been decided to carry out a Speed Awareness campaign in and around the area. This is to educate drivers and to prevent any person being Killed or injured due to the manor of driving or due to peoples speed going into or through built up areas.

Go to MO (Medical Officer) with sores on my hands. Len gets stung. Issue of 25 cigs, have been trying to save a packet so I could get a loaf with it manage to get one, so extra feed tonight. Also, apple pudding out of parcel.

Parcel my turn for soap. Wash my one and only shirt, it will soon be Sept. 17th. done.

Have a book out of library, called The Ladder of Swords, by Gilbert Parker.

Debate, is temperament more essential than love. Answer, love.

Have a pint of porridge. It’s still lovely weather. Boil on Sept. 19th. thigh.

Now & Then - Then & Now No. 81 By Anthony Catherall

This month and every moth see an Epworth scene in bygone days and compare to today's image!

A small percentage of the older generation still living in Epworth today no doubt can remember the group of seven cottages that were situated where the doctors surgery is standing now, pictures above and below. Three of which fronted the High Street with four behind in an the area called Brownhills Yard recalls Laurie Lambert of Wragby, Lincolnshire, now an Undertaker. The wall of what is today's Post Office can be seen left of picture next to the gentleman looking to his right. Clearly seen is the facia sign of W. S. (William Saxton) Maxfield butchers to his left.

William came to Epworth from Arksey, South Yorkshire latter marrying Rebecca Jane White from West Butterwick who became the grandparents of Eric & Peter Maxfield still Epworth residents. A large shadow on the cottage wall suggesting late afternoon as a parade passes along the High Street. Evidence suggests that it could be part of the Epworth celebrations for the Coronation of Edward V11 on 9th August 1902. During the 1930's these small cottages each commanded rent of two shillings Reg Osborne told me some time ago, (a lot less though when this picture was taken). Both Reg & Eric remember several of former residents including, 'Clocky' Smith, George Becket, Tommy Lindley, Miss Snowden and Bob Curry. Later in the 1950's residents then included the McFeat family, Miss Newell and Jack Hodgson (then the tenants of Mr & Mrs Lambert who owned the Post Office). Other more transient occupiers of the front cottages were employees of Lindley's farming until all were condemned and demolished. The South Axholme Practice doctors surgery was built on the land around the late fifties/early sixties and continues today.

My conclusions, that this small space of ground in the well worn High Street over the last fifty years or so, has succumbed to the footfall of almost every person who lives in Epworth. Picture below October 2015.

St Andrew’s Christmas Market Epworth News The Parochial Church Council wish to thank members of the community for generously supporting the market which was held last Friday. Once again it was a resounding success raising a little over £4,400 for church funds.

There was a steady stream of purchasers entering the Imperial Hall even before the event commenced at twelve noon. At around the time of the switching of the lights the Hall was almost bursting at the seams.

The major financial boost is a significant help in defraying the running costs of the Church. Plans are already in hand for next year!

THE FABULOUS FORTIES A great day out in Haxey celebrating the 1940s era Saturday 25th June 2016 A DATE FOR THE DIARY! Room21 Big Band is delighted to say that it will be staging a ‘Fabulous Forties’ event in Haxey on Saturday 25th June 2016. This is a truly collaborative event involving local community groups working together to provide a flavour of the 1940’s, supported by funding from North Lincolnshire Council and Haxey and Westwoodside Parish Council.

There will be a 1940s themed tea party in the afternoon and one of Room21 Big Band’s ever-popular ‘Fabulous Forties’ dances in the evening with a pie and pea supper.

There are many local groups already involved in the event including Haxey W.I., Haxey Methodist Chapel, North Lincolnshire Libraries, the Isle of Axholme Family History Society, Haxey and Westwoodside Heritage Society, Take Note Choir and Notelets, South Axholme Academy Wind Band, Haxey and Westwoodside Primary Schools, the Isle of Axholme Camera Club, Nicholas House Care Home, Haxey and Westwoodside Scouts, local dance teachers and the British Legion but more people are welcome to become involved. Representatives of these groups have been meeting every 3rd Wednesday of the month since last February to plan an unforgettable day.

Room21 Big Band is a non-profit making group based in Haxey and delivering 12 public performances a year. In the last 3 years the band has raised over £15,000 for charity.

Axholme Bridleways Association (local community group working

towards better and safer off road routes) invite you along to take part in their Winter Walk. A couple of different distances will be planned, so this is suitable for all the family.

Starting from Micklehill Farm in East Lound on Sunday 24 January 2016 there will be hot soup and drinks available on return. Maps of routes are provided and everyone is welcome. What a great start to getting fit in the new year.

Cycling and riding events will be planned for later in the year so please keep checking our facebook page for more details.

The first Axholme Bridleways Association meeting of the year will be on Monday 11th January at The Old School Inn at 7.30pm with guest speaker Jed Hallam, local farrier and Chairman of Epworth and District Riding Club.

Guests are welcome to join us. We welcome members who are walkers, runners, cyclists and riders and if anyone is interested in becoming a member it is just £5 a year for adults and £1 for under 18s.

2016-ish?

In a recent interview a newly arrived person to the country explained how she found the English language a challenge. A challenge not only in the grammatical complexity it has, but in the breadth of words to describe objects, which do not always translate the same meaning as in her native language. She said that the most helpful word she has found , is part of a word- it is ‘ish.’

So when confronted with a colour whose specific blend is not known she can say blue-ish—whereas we might say Wedgwood, pastel or azure. The same applies to the taste of new food, or fashion, or emotion I would suggest that for many the past month has been Christmas –ish, that is not always specifically Christmas either in the exact time, or in the traditional message, but Christmas- ish in the sense of a general round of activities loosely connected with a mid-winter festival. This is not a criticism, but a statement of fact. Some of my times in the past month have been Christmas –ish.

Well we are now in 2016 – but this is not 2016 –ish. The calendar tells us it is 2016 exactly, specifically and particularly. We cannot fudge this. So we commit ourselves to all that lies ahead.

Mother Goose Pantomine This year, for their 15th annual pantomime, Crowle Entertainers are presenting Mother Goose – one of the oldest and most traditional of pantos.

Performances will take place at the Crowle Community Hall on Saturday 9th January at 2.30pm and 7.30pm and again on Sunday 10th January at 2.30pm.

With a cast of 30 local performers and a special guest star appearance from Priscilla the Goose, this promises to be a brilliant festive treat for all the family. A whole team of baddies, led by the Demon King, do battle with a tiny fairy for control of the local village. Mother Goose’s family are poor but happy whilst the Squire’s family are rich but discontented. Will the fairy have enough magic to win the day? Can Mother Goose’s son win the heart of the Squire’s daughter? Can the audience shout “he’s behind you”? Oh yes they can!!!

This year there is a mix of modern and traditional in the look and feel of the show. With some catchy musical numbers – choreographed by Kim Oakley and her Streetbeat team - and lots of fun and antics, as always, there is plenty of entertainment on offer. Trentside Federation School News – St Martin’s and West Butterwick Church of England Primary Schools As I write this, we are moving rapidly towards the end of term and the final weeks of 2015. At St Martin’s we have been busily learning lines and songs for the Infant Christmas performances of The Landlord’s Cat (Key Stage 1) and ‘Whoops-a-Daisy Angel’ (Foundation Stage). Key Stage 2 at St Martin’s is going to see a dramatic production of ‘Peter Pan’ at Lincoln Performing Arts Centre. Over the last few weeks, there have been many exciting first-hand educational experiences to share, such as a visit to Epworth Old Rectory (KS1 West Butterwick) and the recent Vulcan experience too. Perlethorpe Environment Education Centre in Nottinghamshire was the venue for a very special educational visit for the youngest pupils across West Butterwick, St Martin’s and Haxey schools on 30th November – the children had the opportunity to re-enact the journey to Bethlehem and the Christmas story at the farm. It was a magical visit to start the season of Advent and the pupils also used natural materials to create traditional Christmas decorations. In addition to all of this, recent visitors to our schools have included a dental nurse, a pilot and St John’s Ambulance (training pupils and staff in CPR).

Community Spirit is very much in the December air in Owston Ferry as a number of our Key Stage 2 pupils venture out to Lindum Court Residential Home to entertain residents with festive songs and traditional carols. St Martin’s school was also involved, once again this year, in running a competition to select someone to switch on the village’s Christmas Lights – winners were Travis May and Daniel Davey who have the honour of doing this for 2015! A Christmas Fair and Lantern Parade took place on 4th December and a Christmas Fair is to take place at West Butterwick School on 16th December. Thank you to all who support our Christmas Fairs, concerts and special events.

There are Christmas Discos planned at both schools, as well as participation in the Owston Ferry Methodist Chapel Christmas Tree Festival. St Martin’s Advent Service at the Chapel on 11th December will certainly be an atmospheric occasion with all of the beautifully decorated trees. Our term will end with Christmas Services in St Mary’s and St Martin’s. At this very special time of year, the Trentside Federation team wishes you a peaceful New Year!
