After the outstanding success of the first four programmes of country dances held in Westwoodside, Epworth and Crowle, local folk dance band Lys St Georges are gearing up for another programme of 9 dances, starting in Westwoodside Village Hall on 15 January.

Men’s Society hears talk About Falklands Wildlife It is the complete absence of rats and cats that has enabled the ground-nesting birds on the Falkland Islands to continue to survive – members of the Epworth Men’s Society were told at their December meeting.

Mr Hill, a retired teacher, explained that the Falklands were very sparsely populated numbering no more that 4,500 people, who mainly live in small communities.

“Because of this the wildlife on the islands is not use to seeing humans and they are vastly outnumbered by the sheep living on the Falklands,” said Mr Hill, who was addressing about 30 members of the Society at Epworth’s Red Lion Hotel.

He explained the wildlife on the islands is not without it predators, with Skewer birds hunting for eggs and penguins facing leopard seals and sea lions whenever they re-enter the sea.

Mr Hill, who used a computer and screen to give his illustrated talk, said the Falklands were home to numerous birds, including geese, thrushes wrens, finches and gulls - to name but a few.

He said he and visited the islands in what passes for summer in the Antarctica, but still had to contend with a storm on his second day there with winds reaching 90mph.

While on the islands Mr Hill was also able to photograph a Short-Eared Owl but was unable to speculate on what it might have lived on.

Mr Hill is a member of the Doncaster Camera Club and the Yorkshire based Gamma Camera Club. His photographic skills has been recognised with him being made a Master of the Photographic Alliance of Great Britain and gaining an international award for Excellence by the Federation of International Amateur Photographers.

Included in the Society’s events for the New Year are a quiz night with questions posed by its President, Ken Turner, an indoor games night and an evening visit to the Doncaster Air Museum.

Speaker for the evening - on Monday, December 1st - was amateur photographer Duncan Hill, who hails from West Street in West Butterwick, and has travelled all over the world to photograph wildlife.

Update = The Neighbourhood Team continue to patrol these areas although there have been no calls regarding this issue recently. If you do see anyone committing acts of anti-social behaviour towards you or other residents in the area please contact us on 101. We have been working in partnership with other agencies to tackle this issue and anyone found to be causing anti-social behaviour will be dealt with positively.

Belton Greenway = Rubbish has been dumped on the green lane around Belton particularly the old railway line.

Update = There has been a multi –agencey clean up along with volunteers and a substantial amount of rubbish has been cleared. Please use other options available to you rather than dump rubbish in the area such as the councils free waste recovery scheme.

Belton Pavillion = There were instances of youths congregating and causing nuisance towards people attending the pavilion building and committing criminal damage in the park area.

Previous issues have been dealt with positively and there have been no further calls recently. The Local Neighbourhood Team will continue to patrol the area and to deal with any issues found.

Information Winter Driving – Now it is winter it is a good time to complete a check of your car. Consider the following:Check of battery; most have a life span of 5 years, top up anti-freeze and windscreen washer, make sure all bulbs are working and lenses are clear, check for chips in windscreens; a chip can be repaired but if left can crack a whole windscreen which can be costly to replace, check wipers are fit for purpose, make sure tyres are of the correct tread depth and pressure is correct. And NEVER EVER LEAVE YOUR CAR RUNNING WHILST DEFROSTING IT. If it is stolen it may invalidate your insurance.

Royal Artillery Badge In July we went to Shipton, Yorks. A week there and then I got my second 7 days leave which was my Embarkation leave, also my last, didn’t even manage to get a 24 hour one. That last week we had together was perfect, except for the silent thoughts we both had, that it would be the last time we would be together again for a long time, neither of us know what was to be ahead.

Back again to Shipton where we got our K.D. (Khaki Drill) clothing and so our fears of going away looked bad. A few wanted to go but most didn’t. Still there was a chance that at the last moment it would be cancelled, but no, on Aug 15th. We departed for Eastbourne.

The last night I spent at Shipton I had a lucky escape, and took it as a good omen that I would go right through safely, and I thank God, that up to the time of writing I have.

CROSSING THE OCEANS TO THE MIDDLE EAST We arrived at the docks at 8am. Aug 16th. and before me there was the Strathmore, what a monster she looked, up the gangway we went and the hopes of cancelling were gone, no more to see my darlings, for, well I didn’t know how long and still don’t. There were to be no more letters to receive or send for months. We stood up on the deck and watched men from all kinds of Regiments, also hundreds of airmen; all told I think it was 4,500 on when we got going.

At last we did get going, down the Clyde. People were waving to us from the windows and their thoughts would be (how many of those poor lads will come back) well some won’t, as I know of, in fact two died on the boat before we got to our destination.

(At Greenock, the Strathmore linked up with five other ships to form a small convoy.

They were; 11L Strathnaver – 31A Orion – 12L Palma – 22L Brisbane Star – 32A Port Jackson. The convoy was listed as WS 10X. (WS was an abbreviation for Winston’s Specials) There were several ships on local escort but the main Ocean escort was the Heavy Cruiser, HMS Dorsetshire from The Clyde to Freetown Sierra Leone We soon got out of sight leaving our loved ones behind, but hoping it wouldn’t be long before we were coming back. That night we went to sleep thinking the same and hoping and praying for a safe crossing. We slept in hammocks on ‘L’ deck. We should be just about on the water line, the port holes closed, fresh air came down through funnels, but it still was hot and hotter still as we got further on, we were packed like sheep.

The weather was lovely and a lovely calm sea, right until we got to the Cape; (Capetown, South. Africa). My job was getting the food from the cook place, which was two decks up from where we were a big place with fire ranges. The cooks were mostly black. Anyway, I missed all guards and PT (physical training) through having that job. After meals we had to clear away and wash up, the rest of the time was my own which I spent up on the open deck. Clouds Farmhouse in Clouds Lane Beltoft circa 1912. Mary Louise Housham stands at the front of the property with daughters Emma and Adie. The farm had, two granaries, a cow house for four, a root house,, cart horse stable for five, a two bay barn, calf house and five duck houses. There were several sheds as well as two piggeries. All in all the spread extended to eighty-seven acres. There have been only two further owners since 1912, next came Ron & Alice Belton before Ann & Hedley Smithson moved in during 1980. Together they soon began the job of a complete restoration (see inset). Today it is a beautiful family home still with lots of outbuildings together with lawns, shrubs and flower gardens. DIFFERENT ROLES Many of us will have recollections of acting in nativity plays, either at school or in church or chapel Sunday Schools. Unfortunately I was never given a starring role, memories of being a Christmas tree are very vivid, probably for all the wrong reasons –but I did have lines to speak (well four lines). However this was due more to my mother’s ability to knit a green pullover with a Christmas tree pattern on it than in any innate acting ability I was perceived to have at the time.

There has been press publicity this year about parental pester power pressing the claims of their children to have ‘star’ roles, and by that they do not mean the star in the story, but Joseph , Mary or failing that the angel, for with the angel at least you have wings! Lesser roles as sheep, donkey and ox, fall very far behind in the popularity stakes.

Of course this striving for star roles is not confined to Christmas but to almost whatever activity we become involved in. Again as a school boy I always seemed to be the reserve for the football team – never a first choice. It was a disappointment.

The New Year will bring a range of new and different experiences to us, some very different.

We know too that we cannot all be stars in the sense of the leaders—and for most we will all be part of a supporting cast. But whether no. 1 on the bill, or part of the backstage team we will all have our task to do, and together as a family, together as a community, or together as a village we can make a difference.

Trentside Federation School News – St Martin’s and West Butterwick Church of England Primary Schools As I write this, we are moving rapidly towards the end of term and the final weeks of 2014. At St Martin’s we have been busily learning lines and songs for our Christmas performances of Aladdin (Key Stage 2), ‘It’s a Baby’ (Foundation Stage) and KS1’s ‘Eddie the Penguin Saves the World’.

Community Spirit is very much in the December air in Owston Ferry as a number of our Key Stage 2 pupils venture out to Lindum Court Residential Home to entertain residents with festive songs and traditional carols.

We were also involved, once again this year, in running a competition to select someone to switch on the village’s Christmas Lights. This honour was bestowed upon Alfie Temperton whose beautiful picture of ‘It’s Christmas ….

Ho Ho Ho’ was selected as the overall winner. A Christmas Fair and Lantern Parade took place on 28 th November and almost £600 was raised. Thank you to all who supported our Christmas Fair, concerts and lantern parade. The children ran their own stalls at the Christmas Fair.

The Art Club at West Butterwick School has made some lovely Christmas cards this year. There is a Christmas Disco planned for 11th December and a Christmas Fair planned for the final week of term. In amongst all of these ‘festive’ activities we continue to work hard on the curriculum. For the children in the Juniors at West Butterwick, a ‘most delicious time’ was had by all at the recent educational visit to York’s ‘Chocolate Story’. This was in connection with Design and Technology and Scientific investigatory work linked to materials and their properties. Pupils designed and made their own chocolate!

Both schools in our Federation continue to participate in a range of sporting activities linked to the Government’s Sports Premium initiative (Olympic Legacy):- football and cross country are the most recent events. The newly established ‘Street Dance’ after school club at St Martin’s is proving popular. So is the new ‘Dodgeball Club’ at West Butterwick.

These two gorgeous girls are Summer and Honey, German Shepherd Crosses who are litter sisters, and around one year old.

These girls have been handed into the Rescue as their owners were no longer able to look after them. Although they are quite large dogs, they are very gentle and quiet, and have lovely manners.

We would ideally like to re-home them together as they are inseparable. They will be spayed and vaccinated prior to adoption. If you are interested in adopting these lovely girls, please give Isle Rescue a call on 01427 728705.

Driving Test Facts Top tips for driving in winter weather A very merry Christmas to all our readers.

If the weather is bad, drive only if it is necessary. If the journey is necessary, drivers should ensure their car is properly prepared and they know how to cope with changing road conditions. ·Take it slow and allow extra time for the journey, even if it is the usual work or school run. Other traffic on the road will be driving slower. ·In snow or ice, slow down and keep well back from the vehicle in front. When roads are slippery, it will take ten times longer to stop so drivers need to look a long way ahead and plan to move lanes as necessary ·Use low gears to help keep traction, especially on hills, and use gears to restrain speed on downhill sections to avoid the need to brake ·The road in front of vehicles clearing snow is likely to be worse than the road behind. Don’t pass these vehicles ·Check the windscreen washer is topped up with windscreen washer fluid for the appropriate outside temperature and that the wiper blades are clean.

Drivers also need a clear view out of all windows not just the windscreen ·Turn on headlights to see and be seen.

Bad weather causes poor visibility for all motorists ·Pack an emergency kit (such as warm outdoor clothes, a reflective jacket, a torch, and a fully charged mobile phone.)

Drivers should remember to be cautious at all times, check the weather forecast before heading off on their journey, and prepare for familiar, short journeys as well as long ones.
