Isle Dance for Health Over the next three months a group of local musicians and dance instructors will be running a new programme of nine afternoon English Country dances in the Isle. They will be helping the local NHS to encourage people over the age of 40 to increase their levels of activity through gentle, enjoyable and sociable dances.

The dances will be held from 2.30 to 4.30pm on Thursday and Friday afternoons from 17 January in Westwoodsie, Epworth, Crowle and Ealand. There is no charge for the dances, but donations towards refreshments are welcome.

So, are you over 40? Feel a little unfit? Want to try something different that’s not too strenuous?

Prepared to try some gentle activity and learn some dance routines?

We will explain and lead you through the dances at your own pace so you can exercise and have fun at the same time. No previous dance experience is needed.

No partner required!

No need to book! Just turn up with comfortable, flattish shoes.

WATCH OUT FOR West Butterwick and District Gardening Club-The first meeting of West Butterwick and District Gardening will take place on Monday 4th February 2013 at West Butterwick Village Hall. 7pm for 7.30pm The speaker will be Gail Summerfield from Westshores Nurseries, Winterton The title of the talk is ‘Where have all the flowers gone?’

North Notts Bonsai Society (Misterston) meets on the second Tuesday of each month throughout the year at 7.30 in the Misterton Methodist Hall and all levels of interest are welcome. The club draws members from a wide area with members coming from as far afield as Retford, Scunthorpe area, Skellow and central Doncaster - as well as the more local Isle of Axholme towns and villages. The Victorian Christmas Market held in the Imperial Hall was a great success raising £3,850 towards the restoration appeal.

Members of the Church and friends ran the event which was a fine example of the community working together. A considerable amount of voluntary time being contributed both before and during the event. Both volunteers and supporters are thanked for their hard work and contributions.

The reordering project at St Andrew’s Church is progressing well and we are on target to have the church back in use for Easter. Recently an interesting part of the project has been completed.

A layer of recycled glass has been laid to form insulation underneath the new floor.

WILDLIFE OF NAMIBIA AND SOUTH AFRICA On Thursday 3rd January 2013 at 7.30 pm our indoor meeting is a talk and slide show on the Wildlife of Namibia and South Africa.

Our guest speaker is Geoff Trinder who will share his vast knowledge of natural history in this area of Africa.

We look forward to welcoming all regular members and new visitors.

All our indoor meetings which commence in October are held in the Stephen Jones Hall at the rear of the Methodist Chapel, Low Street, Haxey on the first Thursday of the month at 7.30 pm everyone is welcome, you don’t have to be a member. There is a small admission charge of £1, a raffle and refreshments.

Don’t forget that a good range of competitively priced bird food is always on sale at our indoor meetings or at Geoff’s house in Belton.

Amateur Dramatics The Epworth Mowbray Players No. 7

With a small stage in the Imperial Hall, scenery was limited. On March 16 th - 19th 1955, “The Late Christopher Bean” was the English adaption of the original for their next production.

The synopsis of the scenery was laid in the living-room of “the Old House,” the Haggets’ Home in Childer Barnston, a small village somewhere near the centre of England. The time was late 1940’s, a day in May. Responsible for the Proscenium, Scenery and Electrical Equipment was with the Mechanics Institute and the Misterton Amateur Dramatic Society.

The play a comedy/drama by Sidney Howard was first aired in Baltomore U.S.A on October 24 1932, under the title “Muse of all Work”. The gist of the play was about a famous artist living with the Haggatt’s who then poor and suffering had a drinking problem and was in the last days of his life.

The E.M.P. had made some changes from the original cast in that they had not cast the characters of Warren Creamer and Abby but did cast Bruce Mcrae. Interestingly, both Ron and Audrey Till both in 2011 living close to each other in Epworth were involved in these Productions, Ron as a youth generally helping out, whilst Audrey was both the Property Mistress for this production and also acted as the Hon. Assistant Secretary for the Players.

Of note for people with long memories, on the 20 March 1955 the film Blackboard Jungle starring Sidney Poitier was premiered in New York.

Now & Then - Then & Now No.45 by ANTHONY CATHERALL This month and every month see Epworth or Belton in bygone days and compare to today's images!

Picture above shows the two Castellated Tower Lodges at the entrance to Temple Belwood, Belton circa 1962. On the 15 October 1965, following an Isle of Axholme Rural Council meeting the previous Thursday the statement in the local paper read, "A decision which will leave the Isle bereft of another period piece" when despite an appeal by the Ministry of Housing and Local Government and backed from the County Planning Officer to preserve it, by a three-vote majority (eight to five) the council confirmed the making of a demolition order on the lodge house at the entrance to Temple Belwood grounds at Belton. In a further effort to preserve the building, the CPO suggested it could be turned into a bus shelter.

The county surveyor Mr. G.C. Edginton suggested an old-age pensioner could live there.

(Incidentally, in 1897 the rent for one or both was only ÂŁ1.00 per year). Cllr. Mrs J.M. Macgregor recalled that there were originally a pair of entrance lodges that were really worth preserving and she was only sorry that the interest of the Ministry had come to late to save the other one from demolition. Another Cllr. W.W. Millet said " historic relics of that kind were few and far between in the Isle" and he favoured saving the lodge from demolition. When one now looks at the pretty appealing photograph above, I leave it to you to decide if the correct decision was made fifty-seven years ago.

Local camera club held the last of its competitions before the Christmas Break. The subject was simply “MONTAGE”, I say simply only because the choice of subject was left up to the members.

Creating a Competition Collage is not simple and needs great creative skills, however the members put together a fine array of images for the Judge.

Mr Martin Lichfield our Judge for the night admitted he was very pleasantly surprised by the standard considering the club had not used this subject before.

High scoring images were created by:- Colour Section:- George Fiddler 2 images scored 19 each, Jean Goodburne 18, David Neale 18, Jan Neale 18, David Ulyett 18, John Smedley 18, Angie Skidmore 18, and the winner with a score of 20 was Guy Myers with his collage called “Egghead”. In the Monochrome Section:- Mary Fish 19, David Hughes 18, Jan Neale 19, David Ulyett 18, Peter Webster 18, and the winner was Jean Goodburne with 20 points for her Collage called “You've Been Framed”.

The observers of society tell us, what many of us see for ourselves, that January will see a surge in internet auction sites of new items for sale. Particularly those described as ‘unwanted gift.’ It is a situation we will all have found ourselves in from time to time, opening a gift to see and come to the conclusion that we already have it, or it does not appeal to us, or even worse perhaps, it is something we simply do not want.

It is often said that it is the thought that counts, and I believe that. But I have met some people who on seeing a gift seem to switch into an automatic calculator mode, and assess the monetary worth of the item.

The way in which these items will be sought after and bought demonstrates the fact that one persons reject is another persons treasure. It is a principle that sustains the charity shops we visit.

2012 will have presented us with a variety of experiences, some we will have been delighted to have, and some we wish we had not encountered—some wanted and unwanted, but we do not have the choice of sending them back. Together they make us the people we are. Solomon in his wisdom said that for everything there is a time, a season for every activity under heaven.

Kids Page The Christmas Lights!

Around about now, lots of communities will be putting up their Christmas lights. Over the weekends, lots of houses will be preparing to put up Christmas decorations. th On the 7 December, in Westwoodside, we have the pond lights.

This year, the villages in the Isle of Axholme will shine bright.

At the Westwoodside pond lights, they have a spiffing jolly Santa Claus who goes around giving all the children sweets. Plus he rides round in a gigantic neon sleigh.

There is also a countdown, a magnificent band and mesmerising fireworks.

So come Christmas Day, Merry Christmas to all!!!

Trentside Federation School News – St Martin’s and West Butterwick Church of England Primary Schools As I write this, we are moving rapidly towards the end of term and the final weeks of 2012. At St Martin’s we have been busily learning lines and songs for our Christmas performances. The Foundation Stage has Father Christmas’s Grotto in their classroom, with these 4 and 5 year old elves busily wrapping gifts, writing cards and making toys. Some of these gifts may very well be the wonderful box model instruments that Reception class has been making, after studying a number of real instruments. We also had a number of Angels visit, when St Martin’s School held an Advent Service in Owston Ferry Chapel on Friday 30th November which coincided with the launch of the annual Christmas Tree Festival. It was a lovely service.

Community Spirit was very much in the December air in Owston Ferry as Class 3 pupils ventured out to Lindum Court Residential Home to entertain residents with festive songs and traditional carols. The residents were also treated to a preview of Key Stage 2’s forthcoming Christmas Production ‘Gold to Bethlehem’.

A Christmas Fair and Lantern Parade took place on Friday 7 th December. The procession to church, clutching our lanterns, was led by John Barleycorn the Donkey. Thanks to Josie McKenzie for kindly letting her lovely donkey make this event so special.

The switching on of Owston Ferry’s Christmas Lights was an event to remember for one little girl in particular – Kate Foreman (Year 2). Kate’s poster entry was selected as the overall winner from a popular competition run by the school to select one lucky child to ‘press the magic button’ on Saturday 8th December at 7pm. Thank you to all who entered this competition and all who supported our Christmas Fair, concert and lantern parade.

The children ran their own stalls and altogether we raised £800.

In amongst all of these ‘festive’ activities we continue to work hard on the curriculum.

Some of the Christmas Spirit has certainly filtered in to the classroom work. For example, at West Butterwick, Mrs Clipsham’s class has been re-telling the Christmas story using puppets and recording this with a digital camera to produce a digital story book.

Photography has featured in both Key Stage 1 classes across our Federation, particularly linked to the art work of Giuseppe Arcimboldo. The children familiarised themselves with Arcimboldo’s clever creations to create their own spectacular portraits. The smell of all of those fruit and vegetables mingling together in the classroom was very interesting!

West Butterwick’s Junior pupils held their own Oscars ceremony on 7 th December which was a celebration of their impressive ‘stills animation’ work based on Ted Hughes’ Iron Man. The main focus, whilst studying The Iron Man, has been to write different versions of the story from the viewpoint of different characters. The children then turned their own stories in to animations. The children drew their own backgrounds and created moving characters. They selected their own music to accompany the film, which had some text inserted. The filmmaking was a most enjoyable learning experience – a brilliant vehicle for them to learn many literacy skills through the study of the Iron Man. The Oscars ceremony topped it all off, with awards for various categories :- Best Character, Best Script, Best Motion Picture, Best Artwork, Best Support, Best Entertainment, Best Soundtrack and Best Director. Children and staff enjoyed ‘dressing up to the nines’ for the event. They even got to arrive on a ‘red carpet’.

A ‘maths super-star’ at West Butterwick received an exciting accolade recently, linked to his dedication to Numeracy. Jack, in Year 2, worked hard to feature in the World Top 100 Students on Mathletics. This is a fantastic achievement for Jack – a very impressive ‘Mathlete’!

Hopefully, many of our pupils will be making New Year Resolutions to work hard on their Maths, so perhaps we shall see more St Martin’s and West Butterwick pupils featuring in the Top World 100 Students in 2013.

EPWORTH PRIMARY SCHOOL N EWS We are into the last part of the Autumn term at the Academy. As usual the last couple of weeks are very hectic with Christmas plays, parties and our end of term Carol Service.

Shoeboxes We again took part in the Samaritan’s Purse Shoebox appeal to send shoeboxes full of gifts to needy children who would not otherwise receive a present at Christmas time. Children and Parents filled 33 shoeboxes which this year have been sent onto children in Romania.

Light Switch Posters Last month we held a Toy and Cake Sale after school at the same time as inviting parents and friends to judge the best Lights switch on posters designed by the Years 5 and 6 pupils.

The standard of posters was very high so the parents had a hard job but the winning poster was by Kayleigh Rose with Jessica Wilson, Neve Latham and Hattie Latham as runners up. The posters were then put up in local shops to publicise the Epworth lights which were switched on by our winners on Friday 7th December.

Class RM Bake Off for Allan Class RM have recently held a 'Bake Off'' competition to raise money for our school's sponsorship of Allan. We sponsor Allan through a charity, World Vision. Allan is 6 years old and lives in Uganda. The sponsorship helps Allan and his whole community.

Each class is holding an event over the year to raise money for Allan. Class RM went first.

The children baked cakes at home and paid £1.00 to enter the 'Bake Off' competition.

The teachers had a very hard job to judge the winners and the children then enjoyed sharing their cakes with their friends. They were all very tasty!

The winner was Ben Gravil's 'Early Morning' Cake with chocolate buttercream and icing. The cake was made to an old family recipe and was so called because it had been made at 6:00am that very morning! In joint second place were Elspeth Bramble's 'Winter Wonderland' spice cake with special snowflakes and Fraser Bray's simply delicious Lemon Drizzle Loaf. In third place was Macy Finch's traditional Victorian Sponge cake made with eggs and not baking powder to make it rise more.

HAPPY NEW YEAR! Whatever 2012 might have been like for you, I hope 2013 will be better.

The New Year is the time some of us make ‘New Resolutions’. But if you are anything like me, new resolutions don’t last long. Last year I was forced to make a ‘mid year New Resolution’ when a doctor referred me to a Dietician! I resolved to reduce my consumption of Cadbury’s Wispa bars dramatically (except for my birthday, Christmas and Easter) and cut out ‘midnight snacks’. I have surprised even myself by sticking to this New Resolution most of the time.

If I am going to make a New Year resolution this year, it must be something sustainable, achievable and measurable if it is to be worthwhile. Watch this space!

South and West Yorkshire Wing Duke of Edinburgh Presentation

Corporal being presented with a certificate for achieving his Bronze award by Wing Commander Daniel

Saturday, 1st December, saw cadets and staff members from South and West Yorkshire Wing gather at Wing Headquarters, in Castleford, for the inaugural Duke of Edinburgh's Award presentation. The event was open to all cadets and staff from the Wing who have either completed the award this year, at Bronze, Silver or Gold level, or have completed one of the training courses run for the award within the last 12 month and provided an opportunity to recognise some of the hard work and effort put in by members of the Wing throughout the year.

The event was hosted by Wing Commander Brian Daniel, Commanding Officer of South and West Yorkshire Wing and was organised

by Flight Lieutenant Andy Williams, the Wing DofE Officer. Representatives from many of the Squadrons involved with the award were present, as well as representatives of the Wing admin staff and various Sector commanders from the Wing.

The event saw a number of cadets presented with awards for their achievements throughout the year in completing various levels of the award. The award contains either 4 or 5 sections, which a cadet must complete in order to be gain the award for their given level.

Wg Cdr Daniel said “The Duke of Edinburgh Award is a fantastic qualification. It ties in so well with the Air Training Corp, with the aims of the Corps and what we do. Cadets get a lot out of the award without having to do lots of additional work outside of the Air Cadets” He continued “It is a fantastic achievement for the cadets and a valuable award. As an employer it is something I look for, it shows the applicant has commitment, determination and drive. It is something I look for on a CV.” Flt Lt A Williams said “I would like to echo what Wing Commander Daniel has said, the Award is a great achievement for both cadets and staff. It does require commitment and time, both on behalf of the participant and the staff who help support them.” He continued “I would like to thank everyone who has participated and assisted with the award this year and hope that you will continue into the New Year.”

The event was a great success and has helped cement the importance of D of E within the Wing. In total 107 cadets, nearly 8% of the Wing, have gained an award this year with a further 18 staff members being recognised for their efforts this year in passing various training courses. This builds upon the large number of cadets and staff who have already been awarded awards at various levels over the previous years or who have undertaken the various training courses required to run the Award.

It is important to recognise the time and effort that both the Cadets and Staff have put into the Award over the year and over the previous years. The cadets give up a lot of their time to organise and take part in the various aspects of the award and often come away with a great sense of achievement when they complete it and see what their hard work can accomplish. But also the various staff in the Wing give up a lot of their time to assist the cadets in achieving their awards and without their efforts, time and commitment the cadets would not be able to achieve as much as they have done.

Participation in the Duke of Edinburgh's Award is one of the many opportunities the Air Training Corps. offers to its members, both cadets and staff. It is a youth organisation open to anyone aged 13-17 to join as a cadet.

News from Belton All Saints Church of England Primary School OFSTED We were delighted to receive a ‘Good’ grading at our recent OFSTED inspection.

It was a welcome acknowledgement of the hard work and commitment that is shown by all of our staff, pupils and Governors. Good grades were received across all areas of the school’s work with the inspectors commenting especially on the improvements that had been made since our last inspection. They felt that overall pupils achieve well and that their behaviour both in class and Fenella Williams as a lamb in FS production, around the school is good. As a school we are ‘Mary’s Knitting’. now committed to building on this report and our Development plan to ensure that we continue to go from strength to strength.

Christmas in School As I write this article we are only half way through December, over the next two weeks we will be continuing with our festivities. Our youngest pupils will be visiting Santa and his reindeer at Normanby Hall, Key Stage two will be holding their Carol Service, with parents, at All Saints Church and Christmas parties will be taking place throughout school. Both Foundation Stage and Key Stage one performed wonderfully during their recent Nativity plays. Pupils as young as three took to the stage to entertain us. They looked fantastic in their costumes and performed with real enthusiasm! All the productions were well received by parents and visitors.

The Egyptian Mystery As part of their topic on Ancient Egypt, Year 3 and Year 4 took part in a History Day. The children were busy all day working in groups, learning their scenes, making props and then finally performing a show at the end of the day for the rest of KS2 and parents.

In the show, Cleopatra took control of the school and turned the whole school into a pyramid.

Could the children solve the Egyptian mystery?

What would the reporters make of it?

It proved to be a fantastic way to provide inspiration and inspire theatrical creativity. As one child commented afterwards, ‘Well everything turned out alright, but in some parts we had to improvise when wigs fell off and tops didn’t fit-but it was great fun!’

Be Safe this Winter!

Dear readers Check your vehicle. Carry out the following Checks regularly: Get your vehicle serviced. That way you know it won’t let you down even if the weather does Keep the cold out of your vehicle by checking and replacing the anti-freeze in the radiator Most batteries last between two and four years. Make sure yours is fully charged and replace it if you’re not sure it’s reliable. Lights can get filthy with all the spray in winter weather.

Keeping them clean and checking the bulbs regularly means you’ll be more prepared for lower visibility and shorter days. Getting a better grip on the road takes more tyre tread in wet or icy conditions. Ensure your tyres are inflated to the manufacturers’ recommended pressure and have at least 3mm of tread depth.

Make sure your wiper blades aren’t worn so you can keep your windscreen as clean as possible for the extra spray, ice and rain you get in winter Dirty windows and mirrors can make it hard to see as the low winter sun hits. Make sure you keep them clean and free of ice and snow in colder weather. And it goes without saying that your windows are clear and de-misted before you set off! Finally, don’t forget to take a map with you for any unplanned diversions.

Driving in fog. Use dipped headlights so other drivers can see you. If it’s really foggy (less than 100m visibility) and you can’t see much, then switch your fog lights on. Switch them off once conditions have improved so they don’t dazzle drivers behind you.

Fog is often patchy so try not to speed up as visibility improves. You could suddenly find yourself back in thick fog further up the road.

Driving in the rain. When the road’s wet, it can take up to twice as long to stop so it makes sense to slow down when it’s raining. If your vehicle loses its grip, or “aquaplanes”, on surface water take your foot off the accelerator to slow down. Don’t brake or steer suddenly because you have no control of the steering or brakes.

Driving through ice and snow.

Check for snow on the roof of the vehicle before you drive off. It can slip down over the windscreen and obNew Car Tyres. scure your view.
