Happy New Year to all our readers and lets hope its a good one! First of all I would like to welcome 1000 more readers to the Arrow.

I have had a few requests over the past 3 years to bring the Arrow into Misterton. Therefore from the January issue of the Haxey and Westwoodside Arrow the village of Misterton will be included. Also from January the Epworth and Belton Arrow will now be delivered to West Butterwick.

The Isle of Axholme Patchwork and Quilting Group meets every Friday afternoon 1 o’clock to 3 o’clock at the Baptist Church on Station Road in Epworth we are all of varying abilities and are a help each other group.

We will also teach anyone who is interested how to do Patchwork, there is more to it than just sewing squares together! It usually turns out to be more of a social gathering than anything else but we do get a lot of sewing done and have also made quite a few quilts for local charities as well as all our friends and relatives. It does become addictive.

Anyone who calls in ‗just for a look‘ is very welcome. The cost is £2.50 per session, this includes tea or coffee and a biscuit, also a raffle (we sometimes have cake instead). Our person in charge is Avrill Kitchen on 01427 810997 We are a happy crowd and welcome guests p.s. we also have one man in our group, he comes with his wife and they are making a double bed quilt together for their bed.

Epworth’s Imperial Hall – a charity run by a small committee of volunteers – is urging more townsfolk to take advantage of the facility.

An improvement programme is underway to upgrade the Hall and the committee members want to see more local organisations utilising the building. ―The Imperial Hall is improving by leaps and bounds. It‘s a great asset for all of Epworth and we‘d like to see more local organisations taking advantage of all it has to offer,‖ said Denise Goodwin, chairman of the Hall‘s committee.

She pointed out that it has two large rooms, which can be booked for group meetings, and that organisations promoting events including dance and yoga already have regular sessions at the Hall. Mrs Goodwin added that hiring prices are as low as £15 for a two hour evening booking.

An Epworth organisation, that has been in a state of limbo for the past two years, could resurface – if sufficient people want to see it return to playing an active role in the town. It is the Epworth Civic Society, which was set up for the good of the town and holds a watching brief to monitor planning applications and make comments to the planning authority – North Lincolnshire Council.

The Society has been kept ticking over by three residents of the town as they did not want to see the organisation completely disbanded.

Now - with issued such as car parking, the proposed alterations to the Market Cross and the possibility of a supermarket in the town – they have got together to see if there are sufficient people willing to resuscitate the Society.

When there was a proposal to completely disband the organisation, and give away its funds to similar bodies elsewhere, they resisted the move on the grounds that there might be a need for such an organisation at sometime in the future.

A spokesman for the trio said: ―The Society has its own individual funds and, although dormant at present, can be resurrected to spearhead any campaigns that are pertinent to its mandate.‖ Anyone wanting to find out more about the Society is asked to telephone Bob Brand on (01427) 872918.

The December meeting of the WI

is being held on the 13th at the Red Lion and is the Christmas Dinner. I‘m sure a good time will be had by all. We took a stall at the Old Rectory Christmas Craft Fair on December 3rd. It was well stocked with various craft items, hand crocheted hats, bags and phone covers, cakes, biscuits and sweets, all made by members of the craft group. There was lots of interest, and a number of local ladies expressed a keen interest in the items on display, some wanting to learn the skills used to produce them, and their intention to join as members in the new year. All were made welcome, and we hope to see them again at the January meeting. The Isle group carol service was held at the Wesley Memorial Church in Epworth on the 5th. It was well attended and was a lovely service with the Epworth reading being the charming Plastic Angel.

What inspired Ellie to write the poem?

This came about through Ellie and her class being asked to think of a magical box that would help many people with its contents. The class had watched Wizard of Oz to get some ideas for characters to help with their box contents and also to develop their own character, extending their thinking to creating a reason for this new character to visit The Emerald City.

Obviously, Ellie's fairy needs to get to the Emerald City to try to find a pair of wings!

News from Belton All Saints Church of England Primary School Our new website is now live and can be seen at www.beltonceprimary.co.uk. The aim of the website is to form a link between home and school as well as showcasing the school to the wider community. The site will be continually evolving and we would welcome any comments or suggestions for future developments.

As a school we are keen to support a range of charities and this term has been no exception with pupils and staff raising over £600 for the ‗Wear it Pink‘ Breast Cancer charity, the Poppy Appeal and most recently the BBC Children in Need Appeal. For Children in Need pupils had a non-uniform day and had their faces painted with Pudsey Bear spots. At the end of the day, the school council organised a second hand book sale. A fantastic £341 pounds was raised on the day.

Foundation Stage Trip to Normanby Park In the run up to Christmas, our youngest pupils enjoyed a trip to Normanby Park to visit Father Christmas. During the visit, the children went to see the reindeer as well as having a ride on the miniature railway. The trip was finished off with a treat of milk and cookies.

Anti-Bullying Week

‘Stop and Think – Words can Hurt’ This years‘ Anti Bullying Week focused on the impact of teasing and verbal bullying. This included looking at the effect of cyber bullying on young people. Through assemblies, drama and our Personal and Social Development programme pupils took part in discussions and activities to raise their awareness of the issues caused by this type of behaviour as well as identifying what we can do as a school to prevent it. The school council worked alongside staff members to review our Anti-Bullying Policy and to share this with the rest of the school.

Belton choir sing their hearts out – a report by Melissa and Lucy (Year 5) Pupils Perform Perfectly at Sheffield arena in YOUNG VOICES 2011.

Pupils in our choir joined in with lots of other schools at Sheffield Arena; they had worked really hard and enjoyed themselves. It was an experience of a life time, everybody was nervous especially year 3‘s as it was their first time to do a concert with the choir.

First we had to learn 11 songs off by heart and three dance routines mostly off by heart. When we were lining up to get in, a camera man came round the schools; people were screaming and cheering when he was filming.

There was a two hour rehearsal before the life changing performance. After the rehearsal we were really out of breath. After that we went back to our seats; Mrs Armstrong handed us our t-shirts and we put our Santa hats on. There were over 5000 children performing. ‖It was amazing‖ said the choir and everybody loved the songs.

Over all we had a phenomenal time and the entire choir said they want to do it again next time.

EPWORTH POLICE REPORT Carrside Sport Facilities, Carrside, Epworth. Criminal damage, including Arson, anti-social behaviour, youths causing annoyance and cars congregating in the car parking area.

The facilities at Carrside are used by over a 100 young people of various ages, and including the Epworth Colts football teams. It is ideally situated and easily accessible with car PC Constable 1169 Police Constable 1839 Police Community Sally Jameson Tina Starbuck Support Officer parking off the main road but this locality also suits those 7577 with the intention of causing disruption to the facilities at the Stewart Pearson site. In recent times the site has suffered from cars congregating during the hours of darkness causing anti-social behaviour, arson attacks on the changing room facilities, burglary and criminal damage to facilities within the changing rooms. Litter and debris is left lying about. These types of offences then cause unnecessary inconvenience to those law abiding people who value the site and the opportunity to play sport. The building is currently having a major improvement which both the police and those involved in using the facilities do not wish it to have any further disruption caused. The Neighbourhood team together with the fundraisers, those involved in the renovations and those who use the site will work together to ensure the negative actions of a few individuals ceases and allows those using the site to enjoy their sporting activities.

Anyone with information about those who commit crime and anti-social behaviour please contact the Neighbourhood Policing Team.

UPDATE; - There has been few calls for service to the facilities.

Anti-social behaviour, criminal damage, depositing of litter at St Andrews Church and St Andrews Ivy Hall, Epworth.

Reports are being received that the locations are being frequented by youths and there has already been some damage caused. The building is in a quiet area and thus is attractive to youths congregating during the evening hours and particularly at weekends. St Andrews Ivy Hall is adjoining the car park, church, and play area and as such make it a particularly favourable during evening hours. Neighbourhood staff and incident response officers make regular patrols at the locations and any youths found on these private premises will be dealt with accordingly.

UPDATE; - Officers from the Neighbourhood team and incident response continue to monitor this locality. Reports being received indicate that large amounts of litter are being left by the young people frequenting the area which is unacceptable. On one Friday evening officers located approximately 30 youths at the location for no good reason.

Names and addresses were obtained from some and letters sent home to parents to inform them of where their children are and to encourage parents to prevent them returning. There is to be further consultation with partnership agencies to stop this behaviour and to find alternative diversionary activities for the young people. It would be beneficial for the young people to get involved and seek alternative recreational activities. We would also seek the co-operation of parents to be aware of where their children are frequenting and to encourage them not to congregate in large numbers in areas such as this as this affects the community as a whole. The youth club in Epworth does not allow the young people to come and go as they please when they attend the youth club and any person found will be returned to the youth club and parents informed. This is a safety issue and we would encourage this particularly with the dark nights upon us.

Criminal Damage on and in the Vicinity of Fieldside, Epworth.

We have had several reports of damage to fencing in the above areas. The team are tackling this by providing high visibility patrols along with the response teams. We are appealing to the public to report any damage to their own property and to also report any suspicious activities.

Recent Issues Illegal Firearms = A male has been dealt with for possessing a firearm without permission. Stolen Vehicles recovered = After information from the public, a number of stolen vehicle have been recovered from a property from the Isle. A male was arrested and police are continuing with their enquiries. Drugs in Belton = A male has been reported for summons for possession of drugs.

Isle Group of the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust Our January meeting will be on Thursday January 5th when we have our annual slide and digital evening. This is always a popular meeting when various members show us a short selection of photographs on a wide range of subjects, not necessarily natural history. If you have some photographs to share with everyone, please let Geoff or any committee member know before the evening and then the programme and equipment can be organised. You don‘t have to be a brilliant photographer, we just like to have lots of people sharing their interests with us.

Our monthly work party will be on Sunday January 8th. This month we will be working at Epworth Turbary and we will be meeting at the entrance to the reserve at 10am and finishing at about midday.

Everyone is welcome, all you need is enthusiasm, working clothes and gloves, and possibly a flask and snack.

Geoff Trinder will be giving an illustrated talk on reptiles from around the world at our February meeting which will take place on Thursday February 2nd so this is a date to put in your diaries. Geoff is a well known photographer and speaker and this is a fascinating subject, so do come along and find out more about them.

All our indoor meetings are held in the Stephen Jones Hall at the rear of the Methodist Chapel, Low Street, Haxey on the first Thursday of the month and everyone is welcome, you don‘t have to be a member. There is a small admission charge of £1 and there is a raffle and refreshments.

Don‘t forget that bird food is always on sale at our indoor meetings and at Geoff‘s house in Belton, at very competitive prices, just ring if you need anything. This was usually grazed by sheep for two years, thus gave time for the salt to drain off. Wheat often followed for three or four years in succession and then was succeeded by a rotation of potatoes, wheat, oats, and flax or beans. Most arable crops did (and do) very well on warp land. In 1826 wheat was reported growing five feet tall on some of the new warp lands. Yield‟s of six and half quarters (approximately 1 quarter =5 cwt) per acre were recorded which were tremendous yields for those days. The value of the land rose in spectacular manner. Land on Epworth South Moor valued at around £5.00 an acre was revalued at about £100.00 an acre after warping in the early 19 th century. Rents could be as high as £12.00 an acre in the 19th century.

Potatoes were a crop that produced a high return especially on warp lands. Many of the potatoes were taken by ship to Hull or even London. The ship returned with a load of horse or cow dung. This was liberally spread on the fields – about ten tons per acre. The chief potato varieties grown were „Up-to-Date‟, the „Reading Giant‟ and the „British Queen‟. On this best warp land potatoes and wheat could be grown in alternate years.

Crops on the second best warp had to be more varied – wheat, potatoes and another crop (barley, oats, flax or onions). On the third best warp crops were in a four-course rotation – wheat or oats, potatoes, clover or beans, and oats or wheat. On the other soils in the Isle similar crops were grown as on the third class warp. On the sandy margins there was a greater variation including, in addition, onions, carrots and turnips.

Between 1880 and 1895 oats took over from wheat as the main cereal crop. Celery first appeared in the Isle in the 1890‟s liking especially peat soils and during the 20 th century Axholme celery has become nationally known. However, relatively little was grown then due to high labour requirements. Market gardening ventures started between 1780 and 1817. Mustard, carrots and cauliflowers were grown in addition to other crops.

The years following the drainage brought about changes in agriculture. Arable land and new crops replaced pasture on the commons. Villagers whose ancestors had once relied on wild fowling and fishing were now employed as ploughmen or labourers.

In 1906 Rider Haggard, the writer said, “ The Isle of Axholme is one of the few places in England which may be called truly prosperous”.

DIET IN THE EARLY 19th CENTURY Before the Enclosures, farmers had meat only once or twice. They lived chiefly on bread, butter, milk; eggs flour pudding and sometimes drinking malt liquor. This was a typical diet around 1800: Sunday Bacon, sometimes butcher‟s meat.

Monday Ash heap cake and butter in a hole in the middle, milk to drink with it.

Tuesday Pudding made with milk, wheat, flour and eggs.

Wednesday Bacon.

Thursday Ash heap cake and butter, milk to drink.

Saturday Pan pudding – a pudding made with flour with small bits of bacon in it.

HAXEY GREEN In 1950, the Enterprise bus company was taken over by Lincolnshire Road Car. In previous years until the middle 1940's the local bus company that served the Isle was Enterprise & Silver Dawn their livery being brown and fawn. By May 1949 a change and now Northern Lincolnshire services were operated by Enterprise (Scunthorpe) Passenger Services, in their red and cream livery. Isle services operated between Scunthorpe (Bus Station), Doncaster (Glasgow Paddocks) and Gainsborough (Woolpack). These featured some direct services, express services and connecting services.

All routes to Doncaster from Scunthorpe called at Haxey Green. On Monday to Friday, there were nine outwards from Scunthorpe (service No. 4 the first at 7:am), six from Gainsborough (service No. 4. first at 7:45am) and seven from Doncaster (service No. 6 first at 8:30 am). On Tuesdays & Wednesdays (service No.6a) served Sandtoft as well, the first at 7:55am. On Saturdays the route No.6a. commenced at the Reindeer Inn Sandtoft at 1:55 & 5:50 pm all via Haxey Green, one commenced at the Ellers Tavern, West End at 10:48am again via Haxey Green. The express service (service No. 26) between Scunthorpe and Doncaster had three daily services taking sixty-five minutes, the first leaving Scunthorpe at 9:35am and Doncaster at 11:05am. Weekdays and Saturdays saw, the last bus from Scunthorpe and Gainsborough leaving at 9:pm. Doncaster 7:50pm. Sundays also had services between Doncaster, Scunthorpe and Gainsborough between five & seven outward journeys again the last at 9:pm.

Ode to Christmas I hope you have had a very good Christmas and that Father Christmas and your family and friends brought you a lot of happiness.

How well I remember the year when the much desired ―Post Office‖ was perfect. But sadly, on Christmas afternoon, it fell on to the floor and the door hinges snapped off. I spent the next hour writing an ―Ode‖ to the manufacturers in the hope they would replace the broken hinges. Before the 12 days of Christmas were over, the Post Office was back in business!

As the year draws to a close, it‘s a good time to look back and as we do so, I hope we can look to the really good times. Every now and then, it can feel like the hinges have snapped and our world falls apart.

Thankfully our Manufacturer, or Creator God, is always there to replace those hinges – and He doesn‘t even need an Ode writing. He will be there too throughout 2012.

South Axholme School Kids Page Film Reviews: Katy Corfield ‘Hugo,’ directed by Martin Scorsese, is a must see film. Reviewers have made multiple features, illustrated in newspapers such as the ‗Daily Mail,‘ ‗The Daily Telegraph,‘ and ‗The Guardian,‘ each given a high star rating. This light hearted, family entertaining film, is also being shown in ‗3D‘ so is enjoyable to those of all ages, or who just enjoy the theatrics of cinema.

The film captures the adventures of Hugo Cabret, lost by his father, who lives solitary behind a Parisian clock in a train station. The exhilarating story has a main conceit of a unique heart shaped key, left by Hugo‘s father, that will set the story line in motion. The complex twists and tales of the story don‘t let the imagination pause for breath as it soon sees the young boy running into a girl holding the exact same key. The two keys combined set the pair into a swirl of creation and adventure, making it the perfect film for both children and adults to relish and enjoy.

I would definitely rate this 4/5 stars to 4.5/5 because the tempo and pace of the drama and action kept my imagination suspended throughout, and so therefore I would definitely recommend to anyone who appreciates a good family film.

In Case You Didn’t Know - album review, Parisa Hallgate X-factor runner up, Olly Murs, released his new album, 'In Case You Didn't Know' after his huge success last year. The albums two singles have already been extremely popular and gave a good indication of the albums current number one spot. 'Dance with me tonight' is probably a more accurate clue to what to expect, rather than his other single, 'heart skips a beat'.

The albums 13 tracks are mostly upbeat and energetic, ranging from motown to pop and have been given positive reviews by the BBC and The Guardian. The only slight downfall of the album is the much slower, 'This Songs About You', which lacks Ollys ever so contagious personality. However, I would definitely recommend this album as it incorporates something for everybody overall, is very enjoyable.

The Drums, an American band, were initially discovered in 2009. Slowly, they are becoming more recognized throughout the Uk, after appearing in NME, along side Bombay Bicycle club. They Were also a support band for Kings of Leon and Florence and the Machine, as well as appearing on Friday Night with Jonathon Ross. Their album, Portamento, has some great indie - pop songs, such as 'Book Of Revelations', 'What You Were' and 'Money' -certainly worth checking out..

Trentside Federation School News – St Martin’s Church of England Primary School, Owston Ferry and West Butterwick Church of England Primary School At this time of year, both schools are particularly busy with all of the Christmas activities in addition to the usual learning. On Wednesday 6th December, the children of St Martin's invited grandparents, the Women's Institute and Members from Lindum Court Residential Care Home in to school for an afternoon of Christmas entertainment. Our community audience was provided with mince pies and scones served by Year six. Sam and Jimmy Smith performed three pieces on the trumpet. The School Choir performed Silent Night and there was a range of traditional carols and more contemporary Christmas Songs, culminating in a communal 'sing song'. Both Infant and Junior pupils performed over the course of the afternoon. The whole event was very enjoyable and much appreciated by the good-spirited audience. Thanks to Miss Jayne Dance for organising this event.

Both schools enjoy involving the local community in the diverse range of activities that happen throughout the year.

Next week, there is to be an 'Enterprise Day' at St Martin‘s when children of all ages work together in teams on a specific challenge linked to the combined development of various skills within ICT, Maths and Design and Technology.

The challenge is 'Design a Sleigh'! We look forward to seeing the results!

West Butterwick Church of England Primary School led a Community Worship in St Mary's Church on Friday 25th November. It was the first time that the pupils themselves had planned and delivered their own service to the local community.

Over the last 12 months, the school has developed a 'Lighting the Candle Group' - this group was formed when the children were asked if they would like to get involved in planning and delivering regular services in church. Over half the school wanted to join originally, so we had to limit numbers, but it will be possible to vary the membership throughout the academic year.

The children have always played an active role in our worships in church. However, this 'Lighting the Candle Group' has taken it a stage further, with the children themselves thinking through and planning the service in its entirety... such as entrance music, hymns, prayers, scripts, questions to ask the congregation and music to reflect on'. West Butterwick‘s Vicar, Mr Ian Walker, has been in to meet with the group so that he knows what they would like him to do as part of the service also!

The recent Community Service had a theme of 'Who Do You Follow?' and the children told the story of Zacchaeus.

The worship was advertised in the local community and we had a really good representation, ranging from Governors, local business people, parents of past-pupils, grandparents, Parish Councillors, Mrs Harvey (Bishop's Visitor), Grandparents, as well as our parents and younger siblings. Our next Community Worship at West Butterwick is on 20th January and the group will be presenting the story of the Lost Sheep with the thought 'God Knows Everyone'.

On Thursday 24th November Barclays Bank came in to West Butterwick School to work with our Junior pupils.

Barclays ' Money Matters ' is a programme which helps young people to build the skills, knowledge and confidence they need to manage their money more effectively.

Both schools in our Federation have been working in partnership with Barclays with the shared goal to help our young people understand what they can do to make and manage their money - we all realise as we get older that this kind of help can make lives much easier!

The programme tackled topics such as opening a bank account; budgeting, saving and spending; and gave practical guidance on what to do when something goes wrong. The children found it all very interesting. We would like to thank Barclays Bank for their valuable input with such worthwhile life-skills. Thank you also to Mrs Mandy Axe, a ‗pastparent‘ of St Martin‘s who first suggested that we get involved in this project.

Finally, one of the most memorable learning experiences for both schools recently was our ‗Egyptian Day‘ which came about through the introduction of a new ‗creative curriculum‘ at both schools this term. This joint project provided our Key Stage 2 pupils with exciting and memorable first-hand learning experience of their Creative Curriculum themed studies, based around Ancient Egypt.

North Lincolnshire Museum Service came to lead a learning activity linked to deciding which artefacts Egyptians would want to take with them in to the after-life and why. This then led on to the children deciding which artefacts they themselves would select. Following on from this, the children learnt about how to mummify a body, through role-play.

Miss Dance, our Deputy Head, led an activity on building papyrus boats, providing pupils with the opportunity of replicating the Egyptian method of building boats our of paper using art straws. A very interesting idea and popular too, as 26 all of thePlease childrenmention seem to have enjoyed model-making thisresponding term in particular.

Children also studied paintings from the wall of a Pharaoh's tomb, considering these as 'clues from the past' in order to find out about the kinds of outdoor games that children played during Ancient Egyptian times. Children were then taught how to play the game of SENET which is considered to be the world's first-ever board game, originating from Ancient Egypt!

It was a fascinating day, made even more spectacular with all of the costumes that the children wore (including staff!). On top of all of this, we held Children in Need Cake stalls on the same day and raised £72. So it was a very productive day in lots of ways. Thank you to everyone who supported this memorable day for both our schools!

INSPIRATIONAL DONCASTER BOY WINS YOUNG PERSON OF THE YEAR AWARD Jack Marshall, from Doncaster, who was once told he would never walk or talk, is celebrating after winning a Shine a Light national campaign award for his outstanding contribution towards the Hello campaign (national year of communication).

Run by The Communication Trust and Pearson Assessment, the Shine a Light awards are the flagship initiative of Hello.

At the awards ceremony on Wednesday 23rd November, hosted by Vanessa Feltz, Jack was crowned the winner of the Young Person of the Year, which is sponsored by British Telecom. Jack was applauded for both his personal determination and for his work to support others he considers are less fortunate than himself.

Jack, who is 13 years old, has Moebius Syndrome which means his speech and language is affected as well as his coordination and balance. He is blind in one eye and wears two hearing aids for a moderate hearing loss. Yet, despite all of these issues Jack has made huge progress in his communication skills and has come on in leaps and bounds with 10 years of intense speech and language therapy. Just 3 years ago his speech was unintelligible.

Jack, whose inspirational advice for others with communication difficulties was featured in the special Shine a Light film, said: ―It would make me happy that giving a voice to disabled children was important enough to win.‖ He added: ―If you cannot do something - talk or sign - just keep on trying, because eventually, like me, you will do it.

And if they say you can‘t – don‘t believe them because you can. I believe in you.‖ Jack‘s mother, Linda Marshall said: ―Jack winning is an amazing achievement. He works so hard on everything her does, particularly his speech, and he also enjoys speaking for other children who cannot speak for themselves. Not bad for a child that was no going to be able to talk.‖ Jack has an outgoing personality and has become an advocate for other children with disabilities. He is now the voice of ‗Thumbs Up‘, a consultation group for children and young people with disabilities, and was invited by his local Integrated Children‘s Disability Team to assist in interviewing disability social workers and respite staff.

Steve Kelly, Corporate Responsibility Engagement Manager of BT, who sponsored the Young Person of the Year Award, said: ―The Shine a Light awards have truly shown the outstanding work that has been carried out in support of the Hello campaign. Jack‘s positive outlook and sense of purpose is awe-inspiring and he truly deserves to be crowned ‗Young Person of the Year‘.‖ Impressively, it is through an ambassadorship with the charity Move that Jack made a speech to the House of Lords. He is a confident and selfless presenter; continuously promoting the plights of other young people and the needs of disabled children in all of his public engagements.

Anita Kerwin-Nye, Director of The Communication Trust, said: ―Jack is truly an inspiration to us all. Not only has he shown determination in his own progress, he has spread the word about speech, language and communication needs, raising awareness and much needed funds for the cause.

Well done Jack!‖ Hello is a campaign to make children and young people‘s communication development a priority in homes, nurseries and schools across the country.

It is sometimes unkindly said that statisticians and accountants might know the price of everything and the value of nothing. The Christmas presents we have had might reflect this, for often the least expensive to be the most treasured and cherished, and the most expensive the least enjoyable. That may well have been your experience this past year.

In December 2011 there was the decree from the Post Office that postal staff should not accept Christmas gifts in excess of thirty pounds, anything above that it was said could be considered a bribe.

Conversation with other workers and my own experience would indicate that it is unusual for there to be gifts of that value!

The same applies to other workers as with gifts, in that it is often those whom society values least in monetary terms who are the most appreciated. So In 2012 may we show our appreciation of all those who contribute to our mutual well being, regardless of the value our society places upon them.

Epworth Primary School News Letter +

At the moment we are busy preparing for Christmas in school. It is a very busy time with children getting ready for performances, a Christmas Fair, parties, a visit to the Panto and the making of calendars and Christmas cards. A busy time but a very enjoyable time for the children.

We have just taken part in Young Voices at the Sheffield Arena. 30 children from our school joined with thousands of children from many schools in the world‘s largest choir organisation. The children sang in a musical concert with some of the most talented musical artists around including Connie Talbot who became an overnight star after appearing on Britain‘s Got Talent in 2007 and irish folk group, The High Kings. The children sang a wide range of songs – including carols, pop songs and a medley of classic Queen songs. It was a memorable experience for all the children.

Anti Bullying Work Last month seven of our older children went to the Plowright theatre in Scunthorpe to present some of their work in school as Junior Teachers and Circle Time leaders.

Cerys Addlesee, Lisa Pickford, Aidan Woodcock and Matthew Robinson talked about their work as Junior Teachers in taking lessons with the younger children about anti bullying.

Holly Hardacre, Harry Hunter and Ben Stewart talked about the work they do as Circle Time Leaders giving a demonstration of the activities they do. The children are now going to support in other schools by training other circle time leaders.

The children also told the audience about their involvement in working collaboratively with other students in forming a new Anti Bullying Policy for all schools in North Lincs.

The children spoke to an audience of adults, teachers, primary and secondary pupils including North Lincs Councillors The audience were suitably impressed with the maturity shown by the children. It is good to see that their work has been held up by the Local Authority as an example of good practice for others to follow.

Well done children. We are very proud of you.

Axholme Camera club members attacked the forth photographic print competition subject with complete gusto and enthusiasm. ―At Work‖ was the title or topic and it was confirmed by the Judge, Mr Martin Lichfield that it must have been a very challenging subject. There were 62 entries in total with 38 coloured and 24 mono or black and white prints.

The Judge Martin Lichfield CPAGB (Credit of the Alliance of Great Britain) gave his comments, most of them positive, and also tips on how he felt that improvements could be made photographically and also using technical adjustments to make the image more suited to the subject title. Martin is a member of Doncaster TTL Photographic Society and has been Judging Photographs for many years. Wednesday evening 7 th December was his second visit to Axholme Camera Club to fulfil the role as Judge. He commented that the subject must have been a hard challenging photographic theme and congratulated the members for their efforts.

The standard was once again high with 22 out of 62 prints being awarded 18 points or over, which equates to 35% of the entries. However the average score of the entire entries was 17. The photographic subjects entered were widely varied and included images from ―Festival of the Plough‖ to ―Elephant Trainers and Cobblers in far of lands‖.

The high scoring members include the following:- (note however: the rule is that members can enter 3 prints in total, 2 coloured and 1 mono or 1 coloured and 2 mono).

Coloured Section – Tony Ferris 18, Jean Goodburne 18 and 18, David Hughes 20, Andy Kershaw 18, David Livsey 19, Linda Rhodes 18 and 19, Janet Neale 18, Judy Newton 20, Ivan Sedgewick 18, Lynda Ulyett 18, and Angie Skidmore 18.

Congratulations to all the members for the high standard of prints entered. The last few competitions we have seen a vast improvement in quality of printing and the photographic skills used to achieve these results. Special commendation should be mentioned to:- Linda Rhodes with 3 images above 18, I believe it is her highest score to date. Irvin Kaye with a 20, again I understood that this is Irvin's highest score. Judy Newton with 20 for her print taken at the ―Hair Shop‖ in Westwoodside. A larger A3 copy of the photograph is now hanging up in the shop. It was presented by Judy has a Christmas gift to say thank you to Penny the owner for her service through the year. From the Committee, Well done to everyone who entered the competition and keep up the good work.

Tuesday 13th December 2011 – The Chairman's quiz will be followed by the Christmas Feast. All food and drink being supplied by members. This is a chance to get your question answered.

Wednesday 4th January 2012 is a competition, The subject is Open, this is the ―Ladies verses the Gents‖ and the Challenge is on, the score to date is one all with the Gents winning last year and the ladies winning the year before.

Tuesday 13th January 2012 – the evening is titled Audio Visuals made easy by George Fiddler. A Practical evening with demonstrations using Pictures to Exe and the music program Audacity to create an Audio Visual slide show.

The inter club selection committee will be meeting shortly after the New Year to chose the Prints for the 2012 LPA Battle's and the Three Way Competition with Retford and TTL Doncaster. Not to forget the second leg of the International competition with our twin club in Sydney Australia, the compulsory subject for this is ―Natural History‖

Driving in adverse winter conditions is more difficult if you and your car aren't properly prepared. By following these simple guidelines you will be safer and ready to deal with winter driving problems.

Is your journey really necessary? If it is, plan it and give yourself plenty of time. Tell someone your intended route and how long you think it's going to take. Listen to the radio for details about road and weather conditions.

Clean the windscreen and windows using a demisting preparation. Check that screen washers are not blocked and that the screen washer bottle is topped up and has a winter additive to stop it freezing. Check that the windscreen wipers are in good condition and work effectively.

Ensure that all lights, brake lights, indicators are working properly and the lenses are clean.

Ensure that the tyres are in good condition and are properly inflated.

Carry the following in your vehicle:- Warning triangle. Hands free mobile phone. Warm coat. First aid kit.

Good torch. Seat belt cutter. Fire extinguisher. Travel rug. Tow rope. Bottled drinking water.

Recovery service contact number. Good map. Pen and paper. Adverse weather and road conditions bring an increased risk of skidding. A skid does not just happen it is almost always caused by the driver's actions.

Keep your speed down and increase your safety gaps when the road is wet or icy.

Braking, steering, acceleration, decelerating and gear changing must be done gently and gradually. If a skid occurs, no matter how strong the temptation, do not brake! Lose speed by gently easing the pressure on the accelerator pedal and, if appropriate, de-clutch.

THE OBJECTS AND AIMS OF THE ASSOCIATION The objects of the Association, as established and incorporated, are to relieve the need, suffering and distress of all those who are serving or have served in the Armed Forces of the Crown, and their families and dependants.

There are only two criteria for assistance – eligibility and need. The Association is structured on a Branch basis, approximately conforming to county and unitary boundaries. Each Branch is run by its own Officers who are ultimately responsible to the Board of Trustees, the Associations Council. In addition, the Association provides a Community Health and Social Work Service to the Armed Forces of the Crown where ever it is needed.

To achieve the objects of the Association we aim to:

Maintain our Client and Casework base and to increase the membership of our active Caseworkers, whilst improving the quality and standards of the Branch network.

Manage our activities, both voluntary and professional. To support more efficiently the serving and ex – serving members of the Armed Forces and their families.

Develop Public Awareness of the Charity through a carefully coordinated campaign.

Raise sufficient funds to ensure that our Reserves are maintained and there is no running cost deficit in our national Funds
