ROYAL AIR FORCE LINDHOLME Adapted and Edited for publication by Anthony Catherall Acknowledgement to Margaret Draper

chapter two Airfields are not constructed overnight and throughout 1939 and the early months of 1940 the work at Hatfield Woodhouse continued. Finally on 1st June 1940, Wing Commander E F Waring arrived to take up his appointment as the station’s first Commanding officer. Naturally operational flying could not begin immediately: the total strength on that first day is recorded as twenty-five and it was their task and the task of others soon to be posted in, to prepare the station for its operational role. Air Vice Marshal A T Harris, the Air Officer commanding No 5 Group, who in his later appointment of Air Officer Commanding in Chief Bomber Command was to win fame as ‘Bomber’ Harris, visited the station on 29th June 1940 and again on 12th July 1940. By the time of his second visit, the station was almost ready to make its first direct contribution to the war effort. No 50 Squadron had flown in two days previously. The Squadron under the command of Wing Commander G W Colledge, consisted of 13 twin engined Hampden aircraft. Thus the new station opened at the time that the Battle of Britain was about to begin. The earliest operations flown from Hatfield Woodhouse were, in the main, aimed at the enemy’s airfields and barge concentrations, the destruction of which would hamper his invasion plans. But the very first operation was to attack an oil refinery near Hamburg, on the night of the 13th/14th July 1940. Eleven aircraft took part but because of bad weather only one reached the primary target area. Number 50 Squadron now settled down to the role of the typical Bomber Command Squadron of that era. In July 1940 attacks are recorded on German airfields, aircraft factories and railway marshalling yards. The Squadron is also recorded, as having carried our “Gardening in Daffodil Area” which we now know means mine laying in the Skaggerak. Before the month was up, the first casualties occurred when on the night of 30th/31st July 1940 an aircraft came down in the sea and all the crew were lost. The first recorded attack on French soil took place on 15th August 1940 when No 50 Squadron attacked the vital oil refineries near Bordeaux; the flames could be seen for miles around as the crews turned for home. This raid was the last carried out by aircraft from RAF Hatfield Woodhouse. On 18th August 1940 the airfield was renamed RAF Lindholme; the Air Ministry was anxious to avoid confusion with Hatfield in Hertfordshire where the Mosquito aircraft was then being built. Under its new name the station was now to play a part in bringing about one of the most telling decisions of the war. As the Battle of Britain developed the Germans were concentrating their attacks upon the airfields of the Fighter Command stations in the South. On 24th August 1940 the enemy bombed London, and the War Cabinet demanded immediate retaliation on Berlin. (1) Lindholme was one of the few stations to take part in these retaliatory raids on the German capital, the first of which took place on the night of the 25th/26th August 1940. The Hampdens had to refuel at RAF Bircham Newton in order to reach their target but reach it they did, although the immediate results were not impressive. But bombs had been dropped on the German capital. An eye-witness reported:

“the Berliners are stunned. They did not think it could ever happen … Goering assured them it couldn’t. The Berliners … believed him. Their disillusionment today therefore is all the greater. You have to see their faces to measure it … For the first time the war has been brought home to them.” (2) (1)

Community News St Nicholas Church, Haxey “RINGING REMEMBERS”

Isle Group of the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust

On 11 November 2018, 100 years since Armistice, bells will ring out in unison from churches and cathedrals in villages, towns and cities across the country. The beacon on Tower Hill will be lit at 7.00pm followed by the ringing of Haxey church bells at 7.05pm.

Thursday February 1st Photography my way – Geoff Trinder

To mark the final year of the First World War centenary commemorations, 1,400 new bell ringers will be recruited in honour of the 1,400 that lost their lives during the First World War. Church bells across the UK remained restricted throughout the course of the war and only rang freely once Armistice was declared on 11 November 1918. The campaign to recruit bell ringers, Ringing Remembers, will keep this traditional British art alive in memory of the 1,400 who lost their lives – linking together past, present and future. For Armistice 2018: Certificates and badges will be available for all “Ringing Remembers” learners. If you, or you know of anyone who is interested in learning to ring the St Nicholas church bells at Haxey for this event please get in touch with Haxey Tower Captain Angie Mackenzie 01427 753563.

Geoff Trinder will be showing us some wonderful images of a variety of wildlife, people and places from around the world. He will telling us the stories behind the photographs as well as giving tips on photography. The talk will cover a wide range of animals and places with something to interest everyone so do come along and join us. All our indoor meetings are held on the first Thursday of the month in the Stephen Jones Hall at the rear of the Methodist Chapel in Haxey at 7.30pm. We look forward to welcoming all regular members and new visitors. There is a small charge of £1 and there is a raffle and refreshments. Don’t forget that bird food is always on sale at our indoor meetings and at Chris Trinder's house in Belton, at very competitive prices, just ring if you need anything. For further information about the local Trust group and their meetings please contact Tony Lee on 01427 753831 or Chris Trinder on 01427 872051. Details about the group are also on the Lincolnshire Trust web site under area groups.

“These two beautiful girls are sisters Sasja & Theia who are 6 years old, and have been handed into the Rescue by their owners, who could sadly no longer keep them. They are lovely, affectionate catsrather quiet and shy at first, and we would like to rehome them as a pair if possible. They are not good with other cats, and haven’t been around dogs, so would be best as only pets in a quieter home. They have been indoor cats, so would be suitable for a home with no outside space. These gorgeous girls are spayed, fully vaccinated and micro-chipped. If you would like to come and meet them, please give Isle Rescue a call on 01427 728705”

darts (Doncaster Community Arts) wins National Lottery support darts (Doncaster Community Arts) has received £25,700 from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) for an exciting project, Doncaster’s Cycling Stories. Made possible by money raised by National Lottery players, the project focuses on the borough’s historic relationship with cycling. From weekend road races to evening training rides, cycling has played a key role in the leisure time of Doncaster residents for hundreds of years. Doncaster has produced many successful cyclists in its history, including national and international champions, Olympians and Tour de France riders and the project will tell their stories alongside the many other local heroes who have contributed to Doncaster’s cycling heritage. The project will delve deeper to uncover hidden details and ensure that stories can be shared with a wide audience. A new film, designed to bring people’s reminiscences of cycling in Doncaster to life in a creative and engaging way, will act as a legacy of the project and ensure the stories uncovered remain accessible to future generations. A tour of the film will enable Doncaster’s cycling heritage to travel out to a wide range of community venues, ensuring that as many people as possible have the opportunity to discover Doncaster’s cycling past. Commenting on the award, Chief Executive Duncan Robertshaw said: “We are thrilled to have received support thanks to National Lottery players are confident the project will provide new opportunities for people to learn about Doncaster’s cycling heritage, inspiring greater pride in, and connection to, the local area.” David Renwick, Head of Heritage Lottery Fund, Yorkshire and the Humber, said: “Heritage isn’t just castles, museums and old buildings it’s also memories, traditions and the ways in which people lived in days gone by. A great example comes from Doncaster where, thanks to National Lottery players, an exciting project will give people the chance to share their cycling stories, new and old, and showcase a lesser known part of Doncaster’s heritage, but one that is particularly relevant given the boom of the sport in Yorkshire and beyond thanks to the Tour de France Grand Depart and subsequent Tour de Yorkshire events.”

darts would love to hear from people willing to share their memories of cycling in Doncaster and would like to find out more about the family-run cycle shops, local manufacturers Uppadine and well-known local figures in the cycling community. Please contact Amy Knowles by emailing amy@thepoint.org.uk if you would like to help.

Belton All Saints Church Of England Primary School. Children at Belton All Saints Church of England Primary School started 2018 by reflecting on the subject of peace and expressing their thoughts both through writing and creative art. The year 6 students have written some inspirational poetry which they were able to share with other classes. Other children painted abstract pictures to express their thoughts and children in year 3 used their computer skills to produce word art images based on their own thoughts about peace.

I feel at peace. The sun rises gently and warms my face; I feel peace. The birds sing elegantly from above; I feel peace. The radiant sun reflects on the wide expansive ocean; I feel peace. The suns sets slowly and casts a shadow on the world; I feel peace. The moon rises and stars glisten brightly; I feel peace. Drained and weary children fall deep in slumber; I feel peace. Peaceful is the way God made the world. Peaceful is the way it should be.

Skyler Davies (year 6)

The Day Peace came. As the sun rises, guns fail to cease, All around the terrors of war rage on. Planes ripped, burning with men inside. Tanks dominating the battlefields; guns blazing at defenceless men, Suddenly, silence… No bombs, peace No guns, peace A murder of crows and flocks of doves re-inhabit the skies once more, Piece pierces the hearts and minds of war torn soldiers I climb from burning wrecks, tanks of metal and machines-I feel peace. Planes, half stripped, slowly becoming forgotten metal frames, no longer rules the skies. Poppies emerge from a deserted, colourless battlefield, Families re-united, Celebrations in streets Now IPlease feel peace. By Noah Marsh (year 6) 28 mention “The Arrow” when responding to advertisements

Peace within Me. As the moon rises, the ferocious flames lurk towards the barricaded dungeon. Slowly, though elegantly, the ash appears like the sun rising from a refreshing nap. All around the fluorescent fire, a bright light lures in the people, drawing them into the breathless view. I see the fire ascend upwards producing peace to all who see the magnificent sight. Peace protects me, Peace surrounds me, Peace is when I hear the cracks inside the fire explode and overwhelm me inside, Peace is when I look up to the sky and feel blessed by God, Seeing the ash from Him in heaven. As I look down, my body feels the warmth surrounding me, The tower of wood slowly die and sets peace in all living hearts. By Isabella Ash (year 6)
