Welcome to the February issue of the Arrow.

It was great news to hear from Brigley House. People came from all over the Isle and donated money to a great cause. Its great to see even when we have money problems the local people still dig deep to help people who really do need the help. Money raised was an astonishing £1139. Well done to everyone involved and everyone who made that trip!

If anyone fancies a trip out, The Haxey Amateur Dramatic Society are holding their annual production “Out of Focus”, by Peter Gordon. Belton Barrows Latest News December 2014 saw Belton Barrows host a Mince Pies & Tinsel afternoon for local pensioners. There were Christmas Carols sung by children from Belton C of E school, accompanied by a pianist. The afternoon brought the pensioners together with mince pies, sherry, tea & biscuits on offer. Stories were exchanged from Christmas’s gone by as Christmas crackers were pulled. A thank you for Belton Parish Council for the use of the hall.

March meetings of West Butterwick and District Gardening Club There will be 2 gardening club meetings in March due to an early Easter in April. The 1st meeting in March of West Butterwick and District Gardening Club takes place on Monday 2nd March at West Butterwick Village Hall at 7.30 There is a talk by Steve Hickman on ‘Agapanthus’.

The 2nd meeting in March is the 30th.. David Matthewman is the speaker and his subject is ‘Sweet Peas’ Everyone is welcome – all ages and all levels of gardener.

Epworth Music Day 2015 This year’s Epworth Music Day falls on Saturday 20 June and we are starting to put the plan together to make it as much as success as it was in 2014.

Last year we attracted over 40 different groups of performers across a wide range of musical genres and we hope to be able to provide a platform for a similar array of musical talent in 2015.

The Isle of Axholme Gardening Club will celebrate its 25th Aniversary this year. It’s Annual General Meeting will be held on Tuesday 10 February 2015 where Committee Members will be nominated. Steve Hickman from Hoyland, Barnsley, will also be giving a talk on “Agapanthus”.

If you have some spare time and are interested in gardening please come and join us. There will be a fish and chip supper with tea and coffee. Also there will be a competition of five snowdrops in any vessel.

Full details can be viewed on www.humberside.police.uk Ongoing Issues Belton = Anti-Social Behaviour - Anti-social Behaviour in the Ashtree Close area.

Update = Although there have been no calls regarding any issues over the last couple of months it was decided to keep this as a priority until the next meeting. The Local Neighbourhood Team continue to regularly patrol the area and if you do see anyone committing acts of anti-social behaviour towards you or other residents please contact us on telephone number 101.

Belton Greenway = Rubbish has been dumped on the green lane around Belton particularly the old railway line.

Update = There has been a multi –agency clean up along with volunteers and a substantial amount of rubbish has been cleared. Please use other options available to you rather than dump rubbish in the area such as the councils free waste recovery scheme.

Belton Pavillion = There were instances of youths congregating and causing nuisance towards people attending the pavilion building and committing criminal damage in the park area.

Previous issues have been dealt with positively and there have been no further calls recently.

Neighbourhood Team will continue to patrol the area and to deal with any issues found.

Information The Local Neighbourhood Team are asking vehicle drivers to be considerate when parking their vehicles. Numerous complaints have been made recently regarding parking on pavement causing young mother with pushchairs/ the elderly or disabled to have to walk on the road. Also if you are picking your child up from a local school please be considerate to other road users as to where you park.

Catherall Well we sailed along past Ireland and on to Freetown where we had our first stop but did not go ashore; (28.8.1941) by the way we had in company THE STRAFFHAVEN ORIENT. (SS Strathnaver) Peter Jackson with the Battleship HMS Revenge (not accurate see below) as escort to Cape Town.

What we could see of Freetown was that it looked very wild, few houses. Black boys came in little canoes up to the boat-side selling bananas, and oranges, but we were not allowed to buy from them, the hose pipes used to be turned on them, they were like fish for diving and swimming. Chaps used to throw coins in, down they went for them, and always came up with it, and shout “any mo” or “any mo glassco tanna”. Oh boy was it hot, the sweat just simply rolled down your body down into your sandals, we only wore PT shorts and never went into the sun.

The nights were beautiful, such lovely sunsets, we used to sit on the top deck, and the only thing was, that on the open deck we had no lights.

After getting going again, we had the crossing of the line ceremony. (crossing of the equator) By the way, there was an open-air swimming pool, there were plays, also boxing and concerts, and one poor chap I remember, a good singer, got killed up the blue. He did a turn on the stage at Cape Town. What bit of time we were there, it looked very good.

At last we reach Cape Town, (11.9.1941) arrive about 4 pm. After about six weeks.

We went ashore the first night after a lot of messing about. We spent three days there and had a good time, had a talk with a chap who used to live at Doncaster. Went to pictures, parks, etc, the people were very kind, lots of the men were taken home and given good meals and a jolly good time.

But all good things come to an end, and once more we got going (14.9.1941) where the next port of call was Aden, this time we had the Dorchester (see next paragraph below) which I believe has since been sunk.

HMS Dorsetshire & HMS Cornwall both sank 200 miles SW of Ceylon, after being attacked by Japanese dive bombers, pictured from a Japanese aircraft 5 April 1942.

We did not go ashore there (27.9.1941), still it was nice to see land once again, and there we had all the black boys again round the boat doing the same as at Freetown.

From there we went up the Red Sea, on our own, because each time a convoy went up it was attacked. We reached the end of our sea voyage and arrived at Port Taufiq (1.10.1941). Very thankful to God for a safe crossing. There were one or two scares of submarines about, and one night the (Heavy Cruiser HMS Revenge) cut across and tried to cut in between our boat and the one behind (The Light Cruiser HMS Orion) but barges into the front end of the one behind and made a big gash in it, but it carried on alright and got repaired at Cape Town. (I Made an error The Dorchester (HMS Dorsetshire) escorted us from England to Freetown, The Revenge from Freetown to Aden, arrived Port Taufiq Oct 1st.

Now & Then - Then & Now No 70 By Anthony Catherall

This month and every month see Epworth & surrounding villages in The Isle of Axholme in bygone days and compare to today's images

Above right the pretty BP filling station on the corner of Burnham Road and Blow Row Epworth circa 1950's. The pumps had swivel arms to reach the cars on the road as the picture above shows. Sadly due to health reasons, the owner Mrs Diplock who also had the Chapel Street garage was advised to sell by her Local GP Dr. McGregor. Subsequently he was interested in buying the business having asked Fay Romanyszyn if she could manage it for him. Fay, astutely, decided to try and buy the business herself and in 1960 subsequently did with husband Steve. Fay's father Fred Moore, used to help his daughter out when he could and was popular on the pumps selling the 'National' brand of fuel. 'National Benzole' joined the Shell-Mex and BP family in 1957. In 1959, Benzole no longer being part of the mixture, dropped the name continuing as 'National'. (Inset South view picture and 'National' sign in 1967).

National petrol in 1967 was five shillings two pence or twenty-seven new pence a gallon. Close neighbours in those days was Mr & Mrs Harry Selby next door, then came Mrs Clark, Mr & Mrs Barton and next in their detached home cricketer Ian and Kathy Botham, who had an account at the filling station. On social occasions at their house, Fay used to allow Ian's fellow cricketers motor coach to park on their large forecourt. Sometimes the party's were 'quite noisy' Fay remembers. Architect Mr & Mrs Ian Bramble now own the land, and has quite recently built a unique 'eco' house on the old site below, certainly a landmark as one arrives in Epworth today.

Community News

News from Brigley House

We set a target of raising £400, which would have been a great result in ordinary circumstances.

What we hadn’t counted on was the extraordinary response and support we received from everyone!

So from the first night of switch on until the end of December we had a constant stream of visitors from all over the North Lincs, North East Lincs, South Yorkshire area and indeed further afield. The videos went “Viral” on Facebook and the Just Giving page and Text to donate number made a huge difference (especially as we managed to get them showing on the Facebook videos). We set up a specific Facebook page for the lights to keep people informed and to engage with people. On weekend nights we had 7 and 8 cars at a time sat watching the show with others waiting to get closer - it was just astonishing.

So I’m delighted to be able to tell you that the final amount raised was £1139.28 - almost 3 times the original target we had hoped to achieve!

News from Haxey Amateur Dramatic Society.

The play has been chosen and cast and rehearsals are about to begin for Haxey’s Spring production. “Out of Focus”, by Peter Gordon. It is an hilarious comedy which begins with a mix up over bookings for the local Church Hall. Although tempers are frayed, all assembled are persuaded to take part in a production of Cinderella, but with no experience, patience is tested and clashes of personalities mean the show may not go on !

Well known faces will take to the stage in the shape Jeremy Cooper, John Spittlehouse, Colin Emery, Diane Corbett, Joan Young, Pat Ellison, Sheila Morrey and Ilene Pearson. The producer is Lenny Lowe.

THE WONDER OF A DAILY PINTA I have vivid childhood memories of our milk bottles (of course delivered by the Milkman) being hijacked by enterprising sparrows who were able to pierce the foil top and have first go at the fresh milk. There even used to be plastic covers available to prevent that happening.

To the people of Israel the promise was that they would find a land ‘flowing with milk and honey.’ To them it is supposed that milk was the symbol of plenty, for milk was then, before the days of selective animal breeding, only available for short periods when a mammal had given birth. Honey was a symbol of sweetness ( very important in the days before sugar).To the people of Israel it would have been a paradox, for both cows and bees were unclean, yet together provided such acceptable commodities, and symbols for a land of promise and riches. One of those promises was that the country would also be a mutually supportive society.

There is too a conundrum today, for we know how important milk is for healthy growing. Yet in 2015 the price of processed bottled water is more expensive than milk, a vital source of minerals. We are told that our famers are being paid less than it costs to produce the milk, and that for them there is an economic and cash flow crisis. The market is forced down by imported supplies of milk.

We may have a land of plenty, but we are far away from an image of a supportive society, being a land flowing with imported milk.

Thank goodness for our farmers and milkmen, let us hope they are not endangered species.

How are you doing at home? Do you still clean the toilets because I have to clean the latrines, it’s not fair! Garry did it yesterday, it was meant to be Larry’s turn today but I had to do it somehow (I think he got killed). If he did get killed his Mum will be devastated… How’s the cat?

Did she have her kittens yet?

Sorry, I have to go back on duty now. I will write back soon. I hope the war will end soon because I don’t know when it will end.

The appalling events in Paris at the beginning of this year raise once again the spectre of religious extremism and terrorism in our western society. It is all to easy to use the actions of a few deranged individuals as an excuse to condemn a whole community and this can arise out of fear of the stranger who is not quite like us. The problem with strangers is that their loyalties are thought to be different. In the sixteenth century it was the Roman Catholics whose loyalty to the Pope made them suspect. In many countries there has been a fear of the Jews because their loyalty to their own community somehow made them separate. Today it is the Muslims who are feared because of the growth of a violent strain of fundamentalist Islam which has fuelled civil war in the Middle East and brings violence to many places of which Paris is only the most recent.

When we embrace a particular world view, be it political or religious or a mixture of both we can become very jealous of it and see those of a different persuasion as our enemies.

Once we do that it is a short step to wanting to do them harm. Our human condition is such that we can easily take offence, thereby increasing such divisions. Although there are some whose religion leads them to think of the Almighty as a God of Wrath, I suspect that God is less ready to take offence than we are. If he were, he would probably not have given up his Son to death on the cross.

Grade Leap of Faith Wow, what a year it’s been at ‘The Dean Headland School of Piano’! With several students attaining great exam results earlier in the year, then there was the annual Summer Concert and the last 6 months have been full of hard work to ensure students taking their ABRSM piano exams in December were ready for the challenge. For those who don’t know the Associated Board of The Royal Schools of Music is the benchmark of success for all leading examining bodies. So remember students if you want to make the grade, you have to practise each day even when you don’t feel like it. Like most things in life, you only get out what you put in. Deans’ top tip is to remember that that the slower you practise the quicker you learn the piece.

The two students who took exams in December both worked to short deadlines and achieved great results thanks to their hard work and the faith and dedication of their teacher Mr Dean Headland. In less than five months 19yr old Holly Anderson has gone from Grade IV to Grade V ABRSM and 16yr old Dan Griffiths has managed a massive achievement in music terms by leaping from Grade I to passing his Grade III ABRSM Piano in just five months! With hours and hours of practice and weekly tuition from the inspiring Mr Headland these students’ results represent just some of the fantastic work being achieved at The Dean Headland School of Music. Each year student’s efforts are recognised when the student who has showed the most all round growth is presented with the ‘Dean Headland Progress Trophy’.

This year it’s no surprise that the name being engraved on the trophy will be that of Dan Griffiths. Mr Headland would like to congratulate all of his students for their hard work throughout the year with special congratulations going to those who have taken and passed exams and not least of all of course to Dan who has made such an impressive and rapid improvement.

Towards the end of last month the annual Christmas concert was held in ‘The Music Room’ where five of the schools’ younger students performed with great flair and confidence. They were required to choose three pieces of music which they had either perfected for recent exams or were their own personal favourites. All of the piano students who Fits Alarms attended then went on to perform an improvised and fun duet at the piano with Mr Headland. It is Mr Headlands’ desire to see a better piano available in a local village hall so that the number of people able to attend the concerts could be increased.
