This can feel like a glum time of year – after Christmas, before the spring – which might explain why the film industry does its best to cheer us all up with the awards season in February. Say what you will about the Baftas and Oscars, there is still something compelling about the display of success and failure, hope and disappointment, parading along the red carpet. Looking on the nominee lists, I have noticed ‘Les Miserables’ included in many of them. If any readers see the film, I would love you to email me a film review and lets have our own reviews!

AUTUMN CLUB WELCOMES NEW MEMBERS The Belton Autumn

Isle Group of the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust News On Thursday 7th

Club which was set up ten years ago by the late energetic Joan Biddle and friends has been a wonderful success but we are always ready to warmly welcome more members to come and enjoy our friendly and fun-filled get-togethers. The Club is open to all aged 50 and over and we would especially welcome anyone who may feel they can help in any way with the running and leadership of the Club. We meet in the attractive and comfortable Belton Playing Field Pavilion every Thursday afternoon from 2 pm until 4 pm. If anyone feels interested do come along and enjoy a variety of games, refreshments, our Raffle, and we always end with a game of Bingo Colin Ella

We look forward to welcoming all our members and new visitors. All our indoor are held in the Stephen Jones Hall at the rear of the Methodist Chapel, Low Street , Haxey on the first Thursday of the month at 7.30 pm everyone is welcome, you don’t have to be a member. Epworth Mechanics Institute Library Annual General Meeting The Annual General Meeting of Epworth Mechanics’ Institute Library will be held on 19th February 2013 at 730 pm in the small hall of The Imperial Hall Epworth.

It is important that all members attend this meeting as a vote will be held on a change to the Rules and Constitution of the Institute. Copies of the new constitution have been distributed to members.

The Secretary will give a report on events of the past year and looking forward to the next 12 months. All members are encouraged to attend and participate in the proceedings.

Amateur Dramatics The Epworth Mowbray Players No. 8 by Anthony Catherall

6th March 1956, the days of steam trains on British Railways are numbered in what he called a “bold” decision, the chairman of the British Transport Commission Sir Brian Robertson announced that electrified services would be introduced.

Meanwhile in Epworth, the Mowbray Players were in final weeks of rehearsals’ for their next play “Summer Day’s Dream” that had its Premier Performance at the Prince’s Theatre, Bradford, on 8th August, 1949.

On the 14th March 1956, as usual, the Imperial Hall was packed with up to 200 people, long before the days of the Fire Precautions Act 1971 and the Health and Safety at Wok Act 1974.

In this play J.B. Priestly the Author born in Bradford (1894-1984) imagines England recovering after a third World War, industries smashed and most of her people gone. The few that remain have to start afresh and like Stephen Dawlish have learnt what is important and what isn’t. The scene is set in Midsummer 1975, outside the garden entrance of ‘Larks Lea’ an old country house on the South Downs.

There were only eight actors in this post apocalyptic play, and most of the regulars appeared including Joyce Battye playing Rosalie Dawlish. Gordon Fletcher had the lead role as Stephen Dawlish. G. Haddon Archer (Fred Voles) Mary Housham (Margaret Dawlish) Jack Johnson (Franklyn Heimer) Margaret Archer (Madame Irina Shestova) Basil Staveley (Christopher Dawlish) and M. Clifford Trimingham (Dr. Bahru).

Looking back all these years later one has to admire the courage and conviction of Gertrude Lees in taking on these formidable productions in such a small village environment, a real credit to her and her players. I can appreciate now why so many people attended and how lucky they were to have on their doorstep, such magnificent drama to experience in the Imperial Hall, no wonder it was packed out. if only the walls could talk. With the Rio Cinema not a stones throw away Epworth then, could rival many a larger town for amenities, both social and business.

A George William Kirk photograph (circa 1907) of North Street West Butterwick looking towards Keadby. Number 12, North Street today right, with an arched window and with the flag flying in my photo below, was a former brewery. Next but one, was a row of cottages a large chimney stack can be seen have long gone. Opposite behind the tree the house on the left then had a large garden and was used as a former 'Rope Walk' business of which there were three in the village, so tells local historian Mr. Brian Scutt. In the 1950's Mary & Ben Thompson now my neighbours, remembers that John Cockin, had a post office (before it re-located to West Street) near to the wall to the left of picture and brother Walter, had a shoe repairers opposite.

After a two week break for Christmas and the New Year, Epworth Colts under 9s welcomed Westcliff Lions to Carr Side in the first return fixture of the season. The earlier encounter, Epworth’s first ever competitive match, other than last summer’s tournament, saw The Colts 8 – 1 winners, so Saturday’s match was eagerly anticipated by all as an opener to 2013.

The Colts did not disappoint as James Kilty-Stapleton opened the scoring after just a couple of minutes. Against the odds though, Westcliff, who had to play six players against the Colts seven due to personnel shortages, began to pile on the pressure and bravely dominated for ten minutes and were justly rewarded when their number 11 beat the defence and drew his team level.

This shocked The Colts into action and it was their turn to place Westcliff under the cosh! KiltyStapleton netted a second from a through ball by Jack Cook. Cook could have had a hat full of goals but appeared to have left his shooting boots at home, missing closely five times, before finally hitting a screaming drive from outside the box to score off the underside of the crossbar. Josh Willerton then met an oncoming Lions player in a crunching tackle at the half way line and, maintaining possession, ran the ball into the penalty box to score. A long through ball to Cook saw him take his second. Kilty-Stapleton made it a hat-trick with a left footer and then Cook’s rebound off the post saw Willerton get his second just moments from the half time whistle. Colts 7 – 1 up.

A change of personnel at half time saw Bradley Barnes take control of the midfield but a sustained period of pressure by the Colts went unrewarded. Both teams then changed goalkeeper, The Colts Louis Turley being replaced by hat-trick man Kilty-Stapleton, Turley later appearing up front. Then Barnes’ thundering tackle at half way and subsequent cross from the right wing saw Jake Hellewell score with a snap-shot from inside the box. Tom Orton then shot with his left foot from the right hand by-line, playing pinball with the Westcliff defenders and ultimately finding the net.

From this comfortable position The Colts coaches began rotating players, seemingly in an attempt to get the whole team on the score sheet, however it was Hellewell who headed onto the post and Yarred Allen who was quickest to the rebound, scoring his first. Hellewell again fed Allen for his second to give Colts a deserved 11 – 1 victory.

Kilty-Stapleton was voted Man of the Match by parents for his performances at both ends of the pitch.

CHRISTMAS TO EASTER It was just a few days after Christmas, only just New Year and I took my granddaughters into a local shop. ‘Pester power’ swung into action as they urged me to let them have a sweet, but not any sweet, they wanted an Easter Egg! On the shelf was a display of Easter Eggs, admittedly not the extensive display we will be used to in March, but a display nevertheless. I was told the eggs had been delivered before Christmas. Clearly this was one commercial opportunity not to be missed in that retail gap before Valentine’s Day arrives.

So with Christmas decorations packed away, the shop prompts us to look towards Easter. The two events or festivals do have something in common, other than the fact that our calendar compresses them into just a few months as winter turns to spring.

They are both reflect the life and death of Jesus, and our understanding of life and death generally.

Both are ordinary events, a birth and a death, which prove to be exceptional. It is sometimes said that a NO ENTRY and a NO EXIT sign were both ignored. This in the sense that at Christmas Jesus by his birth ignored the NO ENTRY sign represented by the virgin’s womb, and at Easter by His resurrection ignored the NO EXIT sign of a tomb.

Whatever the no entry and no exit signs that confront us this year, whilst most signs are there to be obeyed, may we have the vision and understanding to know that just one or two signs might not mean what they say.

You would think that there would be very little on the culinary scene that could cause much of a stir on the Isle of Axholme, so you may be surprised to find that Epworth has been buzzing since Christmas with the news that Ben Edwards is coming to town!

Ben, known by many of you as the award winning chef lately at the Red Lion at Crowle and the Reindeeer Inn at Sandtoft; has formed a partnership with Trish Kingham at Kingham’s Bistro.

Trish is delighted and said “Ben is the only chef that I would have considered for the Bistro as he and I have the same values and ethics where freshly cooked and locally sourced food is concerned, but even more importantly Ben is a truly superb chef and I love his food” 2012 had been a difficult year for Trish and she was unsure what direction to take in her Steve Oatway Photography business. “I knew I needed to have a strong front of house presence if I was to continue cooking. I had not occurred to me that I might do it myself until a friend suggested it. Once I thought about it I realised I would very much enjoy being front of house as long as I could find a really good chef and of course Ben was always my first choice. It was either luck or fate that Ben was available at the time. I knew Ben wanted his own restaurant in Epworth and so a partnership was the idea answer for both of us.”

This will mean a whole change of menu for the Bistro with Ben adding Caribbean favourites such as his famous jerk chicken. Ben would like to extend his repertoire of Caribbean food and is planning to have some Sunday nights as Caribbean nights as well as some Caribbean dishes on the menu.

The Dinner Club theme nights that have been so popular at the Bistro will also be resumed on Wednesday evenings.

“I am looking forward to being able to concentrate on front of house and to being able to promote all the exciting events that we have planned, the first of which will a sizzling Valentines menu” says Trish.

The Bistro with its lovely spacious Courtyard will have two sets of opening hours: one for winter and another for the summer when the Courtyard will be in use, although dog owning customers in particular tend to sit outside all year round any time there is a tiny bit of sun.

The winter opening hours will be Tuesday to Saturday evenings 6pm to 11pm and Friday and Saturday lunchtimes 11.30am to 3pm. Sunday opening is 12pm to 3pm for Sunday lunch and most Sunday evenings will be, by popular demand, a Caribbean theme night with a full Caribbean menu.

Booking for all events and evening is essential.

So, a very exciting gastronomic future for Epworth & the Isle of Axholme!

A Happy New Year to everyone from Epworth Primary Academy. Now I wonder how long into the year we will be able to keep saying that!

The busyness of the Christmas season seems a long time ago for us in school. Every child in the school took part in a Christmas concert or performance – that is over 250 children singing, dancing, acting, reading out lines etcetera. Reception children performed the traditional Nativity in ‘The Grumpy Sheep,’ the Infants put on ‘Ralph the Reindeer,’ the lower Juniors performed ‘The Night Before Christmas’ and the upper juniors led our end of term Carol Service at the Wesley Church.

It is great that all the children have the opportunity to take part in a performance at Christmas.

I’m sure it will be something they will always remember.

The children have all started back this week and have started on new topics. We find children learn very well when we link work in different subject areas together in a themed approach. This term the Infant children are learning about different places in the U.K. through work on the Katie Morag stories. The theme of the Junior classes is ‘Journeys.’ Some classes will be learning about Mountain environments and Japan while others study India.

Next week children in Year 5 will go on our first Residential visit of the year to the St. Michael’s Environmental Education Centre in Hathersage. We are going to undertaking lots of exciting acitivities and learning about the environment of the scenic Peak district.

Trentside Federation School News – St Martin’s Church of England Primary School, Owston Ferry and West Butterwick Church of England Primary School We are well and truly back in to the swing of things for 2013. We began our new year with a series of Epiphany Assemblies, celebrating the visit of the three Wise Men to Jesus. This is the final part of the Christmas story. The children in Mrs Priestley’s class produced some rather splendid diary entries from the perspective of the various characters and key events. I have included a small selection for you, below : Half a day later we ended up at King Herod's castle so we paid him a visit. But he didn't seem so nice or pleased to hear the news of the new baby being born. So we tried to head off as quick as possible. He sounded quite angry about the news of the new baby (by Callum) Dear Diary In Bethlehem it is heaving with people and goats. I've asked in every inn if they have a stable but no, none of them so far (by Georgia) There are some interesting themes planned across both schools for this term which will certainly capture the imagination! We continue to plan from the interests of the children aiming to provide them with cross-curricular and meaningful learning experiences that are highly enjoyable, thus maintaining motivation and enthusiasm. Key Stage 2 at St Martin’s are to study myths and legends, with a particular focus on the Loch Ness Monster. The children have already used their imaginations to write descriptive recounts of an appearance of a Scottish Kelpie, following a screening of the Water Horse film. This film also led to the children considering how composition and colour affect a film's atmosphere.

Class 2 at West Butterwick is finding out all about ‘The Fun of the Fair’, focusing on the history and organisation of Circuses. The intention is that, as a result of this topic, the Butterwick Junior children will be planning, rehearsing and performing their very own interpretation of a Circus Show. To begin with, the children are writing their very own Circus Poems, researching the Circus skills which are physically possible by children, beginning to rehearse the opening dance extravaganza and creating a Clown Collage of how they see themselves as a Clown. Through all of this, the children will also learn about the three traditional types of the Clown; the Whiteface, the Auguste and the Character. The photos detail some of this for you.

Junior pupils at St Martin’s are planning a trip to The Deep in Hull.

The Deep is one of the most spectacular aquariums in the world.

This award-winning visitor attraction is home to over 3,500 fish including spectacular sharks and rays. This educational visit is intended to encourage our Key Stage 2 pupils in developing their awareness of the different habitats that can be found in water.

Class 1 children (Reception, Years 1 & 2) at West Butterwick are going to be having a very colourful time with the intention of designing and producing a large-scale stained-glass window based on their planned study of the Rainforest. Years 1 & 2 at St Martin’s are linking up with West Butterwick on their Rainforest Topic. The children are particularly looking forward to studying the various layers of the rainforest :- forest floor, under-story, canopy and emergent. We are also planning on a large scale rainforest tree ‘growing’ in the classroom!

So, all in all, a busy and enthusiastic start to 2013. Happy New Year to you all!

News from Belton All Saints Church of England Primary The Spring Term has started as busy as ever with classes starting new themes.

The thematic approach allows staff to plan activities that brings together learning from different subjects. Pupils are able to develop skills from one subject through studying another such as developing writing skills through historical research.

Our younger pupils are looking at Toys old and new and are looking forward to a workshop with North Lincolnshire’s Museum Service in the next few weeks. They are also inviting grandparents with examples or memories of toys to share these experiences with the children.

Pupils in Years 3 & 4 made a dramatic start to their topic on Africa with a Drumming Workshop. Pupils were joined by Paul Dear of Primary Workshops for a morning of rhythm and chanting. Starting with simple beats on African drums, Paul enabled the children to layer the rhythms and vocal sounds to produce an amazing performance. Pupils comments show how much they enjoyed the experience...

‘I thought it was really good because we learnt how to sing an African song. Paul made it easy to learn how to play the drums.’ – Lily ‘It was interesting because we had lots of different drum calls from West Africa’ – Mac ‘I learnt a lot about drumming and I would like to do it at home!’ – Shannon Our school choir is also off to a busy start this term. Thirty five members of the choir are, once again, preparing to perform in the’ Young Voices ‘ concert at the Sheffield Arena at the end of January. The choir have been learning songs ranging from hymns to rock ‘n’ roll that they will be performing along with around 5000 pupils from schools around the region. An African children’s choir and ‘Connie Talbot’ of Britain’s Got Talent Fame, will also be performing. It will be a fantastic experience for all involved.

Be ready for bad weather Dear Readers, You can’t change or even accurately predict the winter weather, but a few preparations and precautions can prevent unnecessary breakdowns and accidents.

Never drive off until your windows are clear inside and out.

Ensure that all lights, brake lights, indicators are working properly and the lenses are clean.

Make sure your tyres have plenty of tread and are suitable for cold weather conditions.

Ensure your battery is in good health, a drop in temperature soon seeks out the weak ones. Don’t forget, check the antifreeze, get the screen wash filled up too. Carry a set of jump leads or fully charged battery pack and also a torch and first aid kit. Even if you don’t need them somebody else might be grateful. If your car lacks a good heating and defrosting system, carry a de-icer and scraper. Also have a leather to remove early morning dew from the outside.

Keep your speed down and increase your safety gaps when the road is wet or icy. Braking, steering, acceleration, decelerating and gear changing must be done gently and gradually. If a skid occurs, no matter how strong the temptation, do not brake!

Lose speed by gently easing the pressure on the accelerator pedal and, if appropriate, de-clutch. Be prepared for road conditions to change over short distances. Remember our weather can change quickly. It can take ten times the distance to stop when the road has snow or ice on it than when the road is dry, so allow your self plenty of room to be able to slow down or stop.

A mobile phone is a must to let somebody know where you are. Don’t forget if you do have to call for assistance you need to be able to tell the breakdown or emergency services your location so they can find you.

On motorways and dual carriageways it is always better to leave your vehicle and stand a Puncture Repairs. short distance behind and to the safe side of it.

Wheel Balancing. Truck Tyres Don’t stand in front of it if at all possible.

Balancing the risks of a collision and hypothermia is ALL AT GREAT PRICES!! something that depends on your situation.

If you have the space, pop a few emergency items in the boot, a spade for clearing snow; warm clothes and stout footwear just in case you get stuck somewhere. Maybe a hot drink in a flask is worth considering.
