Women’s Institute (WI) Report

The first meeting of 2012 was held on the 10th at the usual time in the Red Lion Hotel. It was well attended with the welcome return of an old member, and 5 new ladies wanting to join us. All were welcomed by the President, who went on to introduce our teacher and demonstrator for the evening, Jonathon Exton from Belton. Jonathon showed us how to decorate small cakes using various techniques including chocolate piping. Great fun was had trying to emulate his skill with a piping bag, but it was goodbye to any diets when he produced some delicious desserts for us all. An excellent demonstration, with some innovative use of chocolate for decoration.

The craft group didn‘t meet in December, but will be doing so on the 24th of January when we will be having a UFO (unfinished object that is, not space ships) evening, and wondering what Marion‘s Challenge will be. An interesting prospect to look forward to.

It is at this point I would like to enlist the help of any lady in the area, or their families, who were members of the previous incarnations of Epworth WI. I do know that it was a very active group, and they had some marvellous Christmas Parties. However – back to the assistance I need. The WI will be one hundred years old in a few years, and in anticipation of this the National Federation is making a push to get all the old material, and the new, archived as a record of activities over the last century.

Is there anyone out there who has old material about the previous Epworth group? Have you got boxes of records and pictures stashed away in the loft or under the stairs? Does anyone know where it might be, and be willing to share it with us so we can archive it all together and have a comprehensive record of Women‘s Institute activity in this area?

Please think back, and contact me on the number below if you have anything. Looking forward to hearing from you all.

An enthusiastic group of ladies from the Epworth and District Flower Club met on a very cold, but bright Saturday morning at Doddington Hall to see the house decorated for Christmas. They were not disappointed.

The Hall was not decorated in a traditional manner but each room contained arrangements made by different Flower Clubs throughout Lincolnshire with two arrangements by the Chairman and Vice Chairman of the regional NAFAS group. Dried flowers and foliage had been used in many of the arrangements with much material grown locally and some from the estate.

Many arrangements were contemporary, including some interesting triangular decorations hanging above the grand staircase. An original, interesting and imaginative interpretation of musical instruments and board games was on display in the Drawing Room creating a particularly beautiful effect. But for many the Enchanted Forest in the Long Room was the icing on the cake. Claire Birch, the present owner of the Hall had created a magical forest inhabited by willow woodland creatures such as foxes, hares, deer, pheasants and such like.

The animals were made by Alison Walling.

The ladies then enjoyed lunch in the restaurant and a visit to the Bauble Barn mingling with shoppers buying Christmas trees before returning home.

The February meeting will be held on 13th of the month in the Steven Jones Community Hall in Haxey at the usual time of 7.30p.m.

School’s out and academy status is in!

The conversion of North Axholme School into The Axholme Academy took place as planned on 1st January without any of the hiccups that have occurred elsewhere. The Academy will now benefit from greater independence and freedoms as it will be free of local authority control. The new name and logo is already proudly on show around the school to the delight of students.

Head Boy, George Mason, said ‗We were told that the school had applied to become an academy last October and found out recently that it has definitely gone ahead. It is good news because as an academy there is more freedom for the school to pursue its own ideas‘.

Principal, Joe Sellars, said ‗We‘re really pleased to become an academy and the staff and students are really proud of the achievement. Our good Ofsted rating had a definite impact because their judgement is very important when you apply to convert‘.

Because academies are directly funded by the government, it means that our funding comes direct from the government rather than through the local authority. This means that we have the ability to make exactly the right decisions for the students that attend this academy. ‗ Head Girl, Poppy Robinson, said ‗Becoming an academy is really exciting because it has brought a lot more opportunities to everyone studying here. There is more funding for things and the word ‗academy‘ has a certain ring to it. I think students feel proud to attend an academy, and it feels quite prestigious‘.

In the longer term, being an academy will enable us to tailor our curriculum to suit the needs of our students because we will not have to teach the national curriculum. Obviously the core subjects will always be taught but at least we will be able to consider introducing some options that will, for example, really stretch our most able students. There is a consultation process going on at the moment about possible changes to the school uniform. Students have already been surveyed and parents will be next. We will listen to all views before governors make a decision and we will be very conscious that any change will need to be cost effective for parents.

February – The Month of LOVE! Last week, my wife received a catalogue of ―Gifts for Valentine‘s Day‖. We have celebrated 14th February since we first fell in love. Traditionally, a Valentine card is never signed. That‘s not a problem as we generally receive only one card each.

Needless to say, we tell each other at least once a day how much we love each other. Valentine‘s Day adds to that once a year.

The other day of love in February is Ash Wednesday (22nd February). It is the day after Shrove Tuesday or Pancake Day and marks the beginning of Lent. Lent is the 6½ weeks before Easter Day and is traditionally a time of ‗giving up things‘ or ‗denying ourselves‘ the good things in life.

Giving up sweets, chocolate or crisps for 6½ weeks is nothing compared to dying on a cross.

Ash Wednesday becomes a day of love when we give things up out of love for Jesus who gave His life for us.

Have a very happy St Valentine‘s Day and a very slimming Lent full of love!

Trentside Federation School News – St Martin’s Church of England Primary School, Owston Ferry and West Butterwick Church of England Primary School We are well and truly back in to the swing of things, starting the new year with a celebratory assembly for what 2012 promises to be – A year of celebration linked to the Diamond Jubilee, the Olympics as well as ‗personal challenge‘ linked to learning.

In addition to this, both schools are having a focus on Reading and phonics this term with Key Stage 2 linking this in to their creative curriculum theme of ‗Brown‘ through the study of Roald Dahl as an author. An exciting educational visit to Cadbury World in Birmingham planned for March has, of course, been inspired by Charlie and the Chocolate Factory!

Nature has provided inspiration for the Infants at West Butterwick who have produced some exquisite observational pastel drawings of birds as well as weaving birds‘ nests using a combination of natural materials such as twigs and wool. This has been extended to their ICT studies, teaching them skills for producing Power Point presentations linked to what‘s involved in making Bird Feeders :- cost, ingredients and equipment.

School Councils at both St Martin‘s and West Butterwick continue to work hard. Priorities this term are designing and selling Eco Bags at West Butterwick linked to promoting a greater awareness of an eco-friendly existence. This links in with the school‘s bronze eco-status application. St Martin‘s School Council has recently taken delivery of a new bin for the playground following a litter questionnaire and an increase in fruit and vegetable snacks for Key Stage 2. In February, an exciting competition is to be launched ‗Create a Sculpture from Recycled Rubbish‘, to be judged by Owston Ferry‘s Parish Councillors. We have workshops running in February also, for both Infants and Juniors linked to ‗Litter Busters‘ ; an educational experience with activities that are credited to Eco Schools Awards. St Martin‘s already holds a Bronze award is now working towards Silver. ‗Litter Busters‘ educates children on what litter is and why it is bad. Also, how it can damage the environment posing risks to people, animals; spread germs and make areas feel ‗scruffy‘. At both schools, our pupils are already well-educated on this but they are keen to ‗make a difference and provide a valuable contribution to their community‘. Our pupils will be working on this with the ‗Neighbourhood Response Team‘ within the North Lincolnshire Local Authority.

We are hoping that the new year will ‗bring the world closer‘ in our Federation as both schools eagerly await to hear from their ‗Global Education Partner Schools‘ in Nepal and Ethiopia. We have written letters and ‗mini personal portfolios‘ that have gone off via Airmail and we check our post each day now, in anticipation of replies. We will keep you posted!

Staying a little closer to home this term, Years 1 and 2 at St Martin‘s will be visiting the Lincolnshire Life Museum in Lincoln in connection with their studies. This is the largest and most diverse community museum in Lincolnshire. The children will hopefully gain memorable first-hand experiences of the rich and varied social history collection held there, that reflects and celebrates the culture of Lincolnshire and its people from 1750 to the present day. Exhibits illustrate commercial, domestic, agricultural, industrial and community life. We look forward to hearing how they get on with this visit and seeing how it impacts on their ‗follow-up learning‘ in the classroom too.

AXHOLME CENTRAL POLICE REPORT Carrside Sport Facilities, Carrside, Epworth Criminal Damage, including Arson, anti-social behaviour, youths causing annoyance and cars congregating in the car parking area. The facilities at Carrside are used by over a 100 young people of various ages, and including the Epworth Colts football teams. It is ideally situated and easily accessible with car parking off the main road but this locality also suits those PC Constable 1169 Police Constable 1839 Police Community Sally Jameson Tina Starbuck Support Officer with the intention of causing disruption to the facilities at the 7577 site. In recent times the site has suffered from cars Stewart Pearson congregating during the hours of darkness causing anti-social behaviour, arson attacks on the changing room facilities, burglary and criminal damage to facilities within the changing rooms. Litter and debris is left lying about. These types of offences then cause unnecessary inconvenience to those law abiding people who value the site and the opportunity to play sport. The building is currently having a major improvement which both the police and those involved in using the facilities do not wish it to have any further disruption caused. The Neighbourhood team together with the fundraisers, those involved in the renovations and those who use the site will work together to ensure the negative actions of a few individuals ceases and allows those using the site to enjoy their sporting activities.

St Andrews Church and St Andrews Ivy Hall, Epworth. Anti-social Behaviour, criminal damage, depositing of litter. Reports are being received that the locations are being frequented by youths and there has already been some damage caused. The building is in a quiet area and thus is attractive to youths congregating during the evening hours and particularly at weekends. St Andrews Ivy Hall is adjoining the car park, church, and play area. Neighbourhood staff and incident response officers make regular patrols at the locations and any youths found on these private premises will be dealt with accordingly.

UPDATE; - Officers from the Neighbourhood team and incident response continue to monitor this locality. Reports being received indicate that large amounts of litter are being left by the young people frequenting the area which is unacceptable. We continue to stop and obtain names from youths frequenting the area and letters sent home to parents to inform them of where their children are and to encourage parents to prevent them returning. We are working with partnership agencies to divert youngsters away from the area. It would be beneficial for the young people to get involved and seek alternative recreational activities. If anyone wishes to become involved please contact any of the team detailed below.

We would also seek the co-operation of parents to be aware of where their children are frequenting and to encourage them not to congregate in large numbers in areas such as this as this affects the community as a whole. The youth club in Epworth does not allow the young people to come and go as they please when they attend the youth club and any person found will be returned to the youth club and parents informed. This is a safety issue and we would encourage this particularly with the dark nights upon us.

Criminal Damage and Anti-social Behaviour on and in the vicinity of Fieldside, Epworth.

We have had several reports of damage to fencing in the above areas. The team are tackling this by providing high visibility patrols along with the response teams. We are appealing to the public to report any damage to their own property and to also report any suspicious activities.

Now that the evenings have drawn in, unpredictable weather, and the festive period fast approaching it is a good time to review your home security. There is a wealth of information on the internet and also members of the Neighbourhood team can visit and advise you on home security.

UPDATE –A local youth has been interviewed regarding this matter and was released unconditionally due to lack of evidence. This highlights the importance and value of information from the public.

The Isle of Axholme

Where You Live Your Local History Adapted by Anthony Catherall

TRANSPORT IN THE EARLY 19th CENTURY Before Vermuyden‟s drainage, the transport between villages could be quite easily carried out by boat, One could row from Wroot right across to the eastern part of the Isle. In the 17 th, 18th and early 19th centuries communications with Nottinghamshire and Yorkshire were worse than before any attempt at drainage.

Such roads as there were in the Isle ran north/south and these were impassable in winter even on horseback. Attempts were made to lay causeways of flagstones wide enough for a horse to walk on. During the years 1810, 1811 and 1812 when agricultural prices were high, the causeways were completed from village to village. However, these were soon in a bad state and the custom of the country became that a pedestrian should give way to a horse for fear of the horse, carrying a load, being turned off the causeway into the mud. Macadam‟s improvements percolated through to the Isle and by 1838 good and durable roads had been made. A person could walk from Owston Ferry to Haxey, Epworth, Belton, Crowle and Luddington. After the roads had been made one horse and cart could pull as heavy a load as had taken four horses on the previous tracks. Even in the 1850‟s flagstone roads were still in evidence in some parts of the Isle.

Steam navigation of the Trent provided communication to Hull. The first steam packet boat ran between Gainsborough and Hull calling at Axholme ports on the Trent bank. The S.S. „Caledonia‟ supplied the first service in 1815. The service was discontinued during the 1914-18 war.

EPWORTH MARKETS AND FAIRS IN THE 19th CENTURY The Market Place and Market Cross are all that remains of a weekly market in Epworth dating back to the times of Richard11. Market day was Thursday and on sale were a great range of farm produce varying from corn, sack cloth to butter etc. During the Napoleonic Wars, corn prices were high and the market was very busy. By the 1850‟s the market was in decline due to the ability to move produce to larger towns. Road transport provided communication with Hull. By 1900 the market was almost disused and it was discontinued a few years later.

The two annual fairs date back also to Richard11. They were held annually on the first Thursday after the 1st May and the first Thursday after the 29th September. At these fairs were held great shows of oxen, horses and sheep. The fairs still remained in the form of children‟s amusements fairs in the 1970‟s.

Now & Then – Then and Now No 34. by Anthony Catherall This month and every month; read about the Isle in days gone by

Arthur Scutt with flat cap quite probably with a Sunday School outing circa 1924 For many people in the 1920‟s travelling in any form of motor transport was a rare occurrence. To travel by Charabanc to the seaside with your friends alongside was even rarer.

Arthur Scutt from Owston Ferry, a clever businessman invested in two vehicle one a Thorneycroft commercial and another called a Carrier Bus (Charabanc) of about 35- 40 horse power with solid steel wheels with a rubber surround giving a bumpy ride.

Arthur and Elsie had six children and today (four generations later) through second son Alf, his son Aidan, the company is still on the same site under the guidance of Great Grandson Rayner, known today as „Rayner‟s Coaches‟.

Uniquely, not only could his Carrier transport people, but the body could be removed and replaced by another to form a commercial lorry. Indeed around 1910 it was used to transport bricks during the building of Rampton Hospital near Retford Nottinghamshire.

For residents of the Isle a trip to the seaside perhaps happened only once a year, it was then, a very special occasion.

Cyril Scutt the last born of Arthur and Elsie, is now 92 years living quietly in his Epworth home having fond memories as a child of his outings to Cleethorpes.

The pick up point in Epworth was outside the Wesleyan Chapel. With a maximum speed of only 12 miles per hour and an early start around 07:30 am the trip with stop at Brigg took several hours. If a steep hill was encountered sometimes it meant the men getting out and pushing the vehicle or even reversing up the hill being the lowest gear.

Reaching Brocklesby Park Gates near Grimsby said Cyril “we saw children awaiting our arrival, they would lay out a white sheet for the passengers to throw out pennies their way of payment for opening the gates”. Cyril went on to say “on the return trip because the children en-route knew the time the Charabanc would pass by, waited on the roadside expecting some passengers to throw out sticks of Cleethorpes Rock”.

Other trips to Matlock, Derbyshire were also undertaken taking even longer, this fact being confirmed by Marjorie Trimingham who travelled there with her family as a ten-year old, now in 2011 she has reached her ninety seventh birthday.

Whilst it may be the fashion to wishfully look at a New Year as the opportunity of radical change, it is not always, or even usually so. Ask for instance the hopeful Olympic athletes who have been diligently practising hard throughout the winter, with the early rising, loneliness and long hours such training entails.

They know and trust that their preparations will roll over from 2011 to 2012, enhancing their possibilities of success. Consider too those, perhaps the many the media would have us believe, who have run up debts in the past year. Unfortunately the opening of a New Year does not cancel the burdens of debts. They too roll over into the coming year, in the same way as with opposite financial effect the National lottery prize when unclaimed rolls over to the next week, until claimed.

So I suspect it will be for most of us, that 2012 will be the same roll over for us – both good and bad, wanted and unwanted. Whilst some aspects will change or alter, for the most part it will be the same. To people of faith this has been a reassurance, as they often sing about the great roll over of God‘s faithfulness and love, with the words of the hymn, “O thou who changest not, abide with me.” So may 2012 be, in the best sense of the world, a roll over of God‘s love and goodness.

A Great New Event for 2012 Runners from across the country and even beyond will be hitting the streets of Doncaster next May as the town will be hosting its first mass running event for many years. The Brooks Run Doncaster 10k takes place on Sunday 13 May and will see people taking part in a 10k which will start and finish at the famous Racecourse and taking in the Markets area, Town Centre and Town Fields.

The event promises to attract participants from across the UK and even runners from abroad. A Corporate Team Challenge will also feature in the event, with teams of 3 or more employees from the same firm competing to win the Corporate Shield.

Following the 10k event will be a Community Challenge Family Fun Run for children and families, with all finishers receiving a medal and certificate.

Julian Moorhouse of organisers, Metres to Miles said ―We are delighted to be working with the council to bring this event to Doncaster. The response has been tremendous since we opened entries last week. We had hundreds of people register in the first 36 hours, with entrants coming from London, Cumbria and even one entrant from the Isle of Man. It really is a great year to get the event off the ground, 2012 is a tremendous year for sport in UK and this event is for everyone‖.

Councillor Cynthia Ransome, Cabinet Member for Communities said: ―The event promises something for all, from the Family Fun Run to the more competitive races - each taking in some of the wonderful open spaces that we have in Doncaster.― The event has attracted sponsorship from global sports brand Brooks, and UK Marketing Manager Mike East was delighted to come on board as title sponsor for the event for the next two years ―We have been looking for a big event to sponsor in the North of England and Run Doncaster fits the bill exactly. An Interview with Jonathan Buckley, son of Rev Timothy Buckley Rector of The Belton Group of Parishes What inspired you to run 2 marathons in 8 days? I've run a couple of half marathons in the past

few years, and biked coast to coast (Whitehaven to Sunderland) back in April this year and wanted a new challenge for 2012, so felt that doing a marathon would be the next logical step. I initially applied for the London Marathon in the ballot but thinking I'd never get in through the main ballot i also applied for a charity place through Christian Aid. A few weeks later I spotted a ad from CSW looking for people to run in the Brighton Marathon - and because i hadn't heard anything re London marathon at that stage i decided to go for it. It was only a month or so later that i found out I'd got into the London Marathon as well, so was kind of committed to doing both marathons in the space of a week. And I liked the challenge :)

Have you had to be doing a lot of training, and have you been training for long? (Fitness/ eating regimes) I've been running to work for the past 2 years or so - roughly 5 miles a time, 2/3 times a week - although that's increased at times due to the half marathons. The photo attached is from a run i did back in November in the peak district from Edale back to Sheffield - around 18 miles in total. Come January I'm going to be building up to do 40/50 miles a week, and will have to change my eating regime to eat healthier - didn't think there was any point changing it before Christmas :)

I see both your chosen charities are Christian charities; was it your dad, being a vicar, who inspired you to run for these causes? Yeah, defiantly - I've been bought up on the Church and the Christian faith is very much alive in my life. I've also been involved in work out in Uganda with Watoto, so have seen poverty first hand, hence choosing Christian Aid; and CSW helps support Christians who suffer persecution because of their faith which I think is wrong.

Also, it is correct that you work at the Herringthorpe United Reformed Church? What work do you do there? Yeah I do work there as their part time youth and children's worker - i run a weekly kids and youth club and also half term holiday clubs. I'm starting a new job with the YMCA White Rose (which covers Rotherham, Sheffield and Wakefield) in the new year, working in conjunction with local Churches to run town and regional wide youth events and work.

Do you do a lot of charity work and do you have any future fundraising plans? I've done all sorts down the years - from Blue Peter bring and buy sales, to coffee mornings, to sponsored silences, sponsored walks, sky dives, halfmarathons, 10k, bike rides (coast to coast) etc. I've also been out to Uganda 4 times - planning a 5th trip this August - to work with Watoto, a Christian based orphanage out there.

Lovers of the English Language by Anthony Catherall There is a two-letter word that perhaps has more meanings than any other two-letter word, and that is ‗UP‘ It‘s easy to understand UP towards the sky or at the top of a list. But when we awaken in the morning, why do we wake UP? At a meeting, why does a topic come UP? Why do we speak UP and why are the officers UP for an election and why is it UP to the secretary to write UP a report. We call UP our friends. And we use it to brighten UP a room, polish UP the silver; we warm UP the leftovers and clean UP the kitchen. We lock UP the house and some guys fix UP the old car. At other times the little word has a real special meaning. People stir UP trouble, line UP for tickets, work UP an appetite, and think UP excuses. To be dressed is one thing, but to be dressed UP is special.

And this UP is confusing: A drain must be opened UP because it has stopped UP. We open UP a store in the morning but we close it UP at night.

We seem to be pretty mixed UP about UP! To be knowledgeable about the proper uses of UP, look the word UP in the dictionary. In a desk-sized dictionary, it takes UP almost a quarter of the page and can add UP to about thirty definitions. If you are UP to it, you might try building UP a list of the many ways UP is used. It will take UP a lot of your time, but if you don‘t give UP, you may wind UP with a hundred or more. When it threatens to rain, we say it is clouding UP when the sun comes out we say it is clearing UP. When it rains, it wets the earth and often messes things UP. When it doesn‘t rain for a while, things dry UP. One could go on and on, but I‘ll wrap it UP for now, my time is UP, so…….. It‘s time to shut UP! Oh……. Gents Victorious in Battles Competition With the Ladies.

Axholme Camera Club welcomed in the New Year with its first Photo print competition. This was in deed a true competition in every sense of the word, we could even describe it as a Battle of the Sexes, it was Ladies verses the Gents. The subject was OPEN as not to put any limits that may give advantage to one side or the other. Therefore, the members brought a wide and varied choice of titles. There was photographs from Bondi Beach and Bali to portraits of family and pets, and birds of many colours to monochrome images illustrating the workings of the piano.

After the judgement decisions were complete the Judge, Mr Ian Pinn, expressed his thoughts relating to the the quality of the photography, stating that entries were of a high standard and he had enjoyed the chance to judge the competition.

Ian was a little late arriving due to the weather with very high winds on the motorway which slowed down the traffic extending the journey from Nottingham. Nevertheless, Ian began judging with very little time to review the images. He made the comment that we had more members attending than Nottingham the night before. Ian's style and experience has a Judge began to show through from the start when he gave good critical and positive advice on how to improve each image.

There was a total of 76 entries, 56 coloured and 28 Mono or Black and White images. However, these were separated into the Ladies and Gents, were the Ladies had 13 colour and 7 mono to the Gents 35 colour and 21 mono.

Once the judging had been completed it was left to Geoff Trinder the Chairman to keep the proceedings moving until the scores had been ratified by Dave Neale one of the Competition Secretaries. The scores are average by the number of members in each section to ensure fair play due to the unbalanced number of female entries. After great deliberation it was announced that the Gents had won by a very narrow margin.

Final score was Gents 15.71, Ladies 15.65 this was followed by howls and shouts such as ―Wait till next year‖. It was all in good fun and the night ended with members wishing each other a happy new year. This is the third year that Axholme Camera Club have run the Ladies Verses the Gents competition. To date the Gents are leading 2 to 1.

The number of high scoring images demonstrates the standard of the photography that the members are producing today is of a high-level.

Premier League Haxey Looking for Support from Local Businesses After being crowned champions of the Lincolnshire Premier League for the 2011 season, Haxey Cricket Club has been promoted to the Lincolnshire ECB Premier League to face the county‘s elite. During the 2012 season the Isle team will be taking the field against the likes of Grimsby, Boston, Louth and Sleaford; and whilst Haxey may be the only village team in a league of towns, they are intending to firmly establish themselves in the top flight.

Haxey Cricket Club is an extremely well-run club with three senior teams playing at high levels and doing extremely well. They also have a very strong junior section, with teams playing in competitive matches at under 11, under 13 and under 15 years. The junior coaching set-up is superb, and this is one of the reasons why Haxey attracts so many top young players from miles around, and also why the under 11s went right through last season without losing a single game. It‘s also very pleasing to see so many of the Haxey youngsters going on to represent their county at their respective age levels. Out of the current crop of juniors no less than six have played for Lincolnshire, and 12 have been selected to play representative cricket for North Lincolnshire.

In total, Haxey Cricket Club has in excess of 80 members, which easily makes it the strongest cricket club in the Isle of Axholme – boasting a fine playing field and excellent facilities – including a top class pavilion and electronic scoreboard. And now, after winning promotion to the Lincolnshire ECB Premier League, they are also the number one team in the whole of North Lincolnshire.

But if Haxey is to be successful against the cream of the county, the club needs to raise the bar – and unfortunately this costs money. Success though attracts interest, and support has been forthcoming from many local firms, together with a long list of willing match ball sponsors..

There are however many more ways for local businesses to get involved with Haxey CC and benefit from being associated with Axholme‘s (and North Lincolnshire‘s) number one cricket club. These include everything from perimeter advertising at the ground - through to sponsorship of the junior teams, ground improvements and the recruitment of a top overseas player, who will not only play for the club but also professionally coach the youngsters.

Dear readers, Denser traffic and more pedestrians make town and city driving far more intense than driving on the open road.

Hazards are also likely to be concealed and there are more junctions and traffic lights etc to deal with. The only way to cope safely with all these potential dangers is to concentrate intensely, spotting them early and taking the appropriate measures to be prepared for them.

Local knowledge is particularly useful in town, but you should never let it lure you into a false sense of security, as most accidents occur within five minutes of home, where drivers are most complacent.

Always position your car to achieve the best view ahead, using the information gained to ensure you‘re in the right lane as early as possible.

Should you make a mistake that cannot easily be rectified with a U- turn, drive on as planned then turn around, making your way back to the correct route.

Advanced observations in town helps you to spot many hazards and identify plenty of useful driving information. Here are some important things to look for…



Parked cars can obscure hazards. As you pass them, choose a speed and road position that gives you enough reaction time if, for example, a door is opening without warning or someone steps out,



Spot tell-tale signs that a car is about to pull out: angled wheels, exhaust smoke and illuminated tail-lights etc.



Look out for pedestrians who are using traffic crossings incorrectly. Many start crossing when the green man `bleeps` without even looking to see if any traffic is approaching. Also keep an eye out for `late runners`, who will make a dash for it as your lights turn green.



Be aware of pedestrians near schools and pubs at key times, and near offices, stations etc at all times.



Give cyclists plenty of clearance as you pass them. Look out for them at junctions and always allow them enough space to `wobble`.



Lorries and buses can obscure important road signs. Looking ahead for signs will minimise this problem.



Delivery vans often park in awkward places, so take extra care when passing them. Remember to look underneath them to spot the feet of pedestrians who may step out into the road unexpectedly.



Taxis may make unexpected manoeuvres (u-turns, sudden stops) when they spot a fare. Be prepared for this when driving near railway stations and shopping centres etc.
