I must say I am looking forward to the Spring, I've heard so much bad news over the last month, I am looking forward to longer days and hopefully some sunshine.

My heart goes out to all the friends and family of Joan Biddle who died early January. She was the heart and inspiration of Belton in the Park. I only met Joan a couple of times, and found her to be a lovely kind lady, who made me very welcome. This years concert in the park will be the last one and will be a tribute to Joan, lets hope as many people can attend as possible.

February brings Valentine‘s Day, treat someone special this year, there are plenty of ideas in the magazine, beauty vouchers can be purchased from Charlotte Hopkins, flowers from Fountain Court Florist or a special meal from the many pubs/restaurants who advertise.

17 year old Isle of Axholme student JAIMIE MARSHALL has secured a place in the National Finals of the Lions Clubs International Young Ambassador of the 21st Century award scheme.

Jaimie is a very busy 16 year old bundle of energy who has been actively involved in an impressive range of fund raising activity for an equally impressive variety of charities both locally and Nationwide. She also sponsors three orphans in Lesotho. In fact it seems that she is totally committed to helping those whose quality of life without such support would be sadly lacking. Her entry into the Lions Young Ambassador scheme resulted from assistance given

by Glanford and Lindsey Lions to her brother Jack who, as a sufferer of Moebius Sydrome, has sight, speech, balance and coordination difficulties.

Jamie's past record of work in these areas equipped her well and the judges recognised her outstanding achievements.

For the past four years she has worked tirelessly to raise funds but also maintains a strong belief that just providing money doesn‘t ?finish the job and so she also spends time with groups of people providing practical support and encouragement.

No surprise then that in 2010 Jaimie received a Princess Diana award attending a ceremony at Canary Wharf (London) where her selfless commitment was deservedly recognised.

If Jamie is successful at the National finals, where she will compete with 12 other like-minded young people, she will win a 1,500 bursary (to be used in promoting or supporting a charitable activity of her choice) as well as being invited to attend the Lions Clubs International Youth Centre, this year being held at Street in Somerset. She will also take part in the European Young Ambassador of the 21st Century finals to be held at Maastricht in The Netherlands in October 2011.

At the end of January, the Rt Rev Dr John Saxbee, the Bishop of Lincoln will retire. I will remember him for many things: his phenomenal ability to remember names and faces; his acts of heroism including flying with the Red Arrows; his common sense in blessing the snowploughs every year; above all, his ability to proclaim the Good News of Jesus Christ. As he puts it, ―God loves you as you are – and loves you too much to leave you that way.‖ We wish him and his wife Jackie every happiness in their retirement. Bishop John intends to learn to cook!

We await the nomination of a new Bishop sometime in the summer. We are praying for a man who will love God and love the people of this Diocese.

Police Report The current Neighbourhood Priorities for this area are as follows:Priority One = Burglary‘s in Belton – increase in reports of non-dwelling burglaries and commercial burglaries in the Belton area.

UPDATE- there has been some reduction in the number of reported calls for service in the area, however at this time of the year this type of crime is still a priority for the Neighbourhood team and incident response officers working on the Isle. There have been arrests made and we await the outcome of such arrests.

Priority Two = St Andrew‘s Church/Kings Croft Car Park, town centre, Epworth – Anti-social behaviour.

UPDATE; - there have been no calls for service to the area, however we are noticing an increase in damage and other crimes in the town centre and in particular in and around Fountain Court. The identified times are Friday, Saturday evenings/early hours and include the aftermath of people‘s night out in local licensed premises. The Neighbourhood team will be paying particular attention to these areas in order to resolve the issue and consider other steps that can be taken.

Local Male caught committing burglary. A local male was caught inside a house by incident response officers in Epworth and was arrested and charged.

A local Epworth male was arrested and charged with theft from a local shop by incident response officers in Epworth.

A local youth was caught red-handed riding his friend‘s scooter. He was detained by police and questioned and is in the process of being prosecuted.

A group of males were warned recently regarding hare coursing near to Belftoft.

A police surgery is being held at the Epworth Police Station between 6pm – 7pm on Wednesday 9th February 2011.

Members of the public are invited to attend at the station to discuss with local Neighbourhood Officers issues in their respective areas.

The Next Neighbourhood Action Team (NAT) meeting will be held at the Imperial Hall, Epworth at 7pm on Tuesday 8th March 2011. Any member of the public may attend at 6.30pm for half an hour before the meeting to discuss with any members from their Neighbourhood who represent their ward area regarding any issues that would like raised at the meeting which follows.

ALEXANDER KILHAM The ideas of John Wesley were taken and developed by many of his followers.

One such man was Alexander Kilham who was born in Epworth on July 10th 1762 the son of a linen weaver. Alexander took up the ideas of Wesley and became a local preacher, preaching his first sermon at Luddington. He preached around Gainsborough, and later in Pocklington, Whitby, and Newcastle and in 1793 in Aberdeen. He was impressed by the Presbyterian system with its ideas of ministerial and lay government of the church. In 1795 he published a pamphlet called the ‘Progress of Liberty” which attacked ministerial power and demanded the right of the people to share in legislation and government. He also believed in the independence of each individual church or chapel” complete within itself for government, but within a framework of churches being associated for mutual help”.

All Methodists did not share his views and the Wesleyan Conference of 1796 expelled him from their ranks. A year later he helped to found the Methodist New Connexion that flourished and continued until reunited with the Wesleyan Methodist Church within the last eighty years in 1932. The new Connexion was organised similarly to the Methodist Church of today with Leader’s Meetings in local churches to organise locally, Quarterly Meetings, District Synod Meetings, Annual Conferences with equal lay and ministerial representation and an Annual Committee to act from Conference to Conference.

Most of Kilham’s ideas have been since adopted by the Methodist Church. He died at the age of 36 years having worked himself to death and was buried at Nottingham. The Kilham memorial Chapel in Epworth was opened on July 25th 1860. It was closed due to unification with the Wesleyan Methodists. The building is now used a Youth Centre.

Members of the new Connexion increased steadily from the time of the first conference in 1797 through the 19th century. Here are some figures related to New Connexion membership: 1797 – 5037, 1802 – 5070, 1812 – 8677, 1822 – 10856, 1832 – 12621, 1840 – 21836, 1847 – 19462, 1872 – 30972. There were also 78670 Sunday School Scholars.

Now & Then – Then & Now No. 22 by Anthony Catherall This month and every month see Epworth in bygone days and compare to today’s images.

Maws Mill Epworth above from a painting by F.W. Jackson of Oldham in 1889. Built for Richard Maw in 1783 at a cost of £376.12.10.

Local West End farmer John Clark (deceased), life long resident of Epworth said, ‘it was a difficult mill to access with my horse and cart taking corn for milling especially in the wintertime’. Nevertheless, it ceased to be a working mill during the 1920’s In 1985, a boyhood dream was realised and it became the property of Epworth resident Barry Leggott, who has enjoyed sympathetically restoring it to its present state. By ‘taking it in hand’ said Barry ‘it has given me great pleasure in creating one of Epworth’s prominent landmarks which I hope will be enjoyed by people both now and in the future’. During restoration the cap took three years perseverance and dedication to make it fit inch perfect, and in September 2005 BBC’s Look North came to feature it.

Dear Friends, What is your name?

The pope has recently criticised parents for choosing non-biblical Christian names, often inspired by film star and TV star names. He recommends very strongly biblical names only, seeing the name as an indelible seal.

Now we will all have our own personal view on this, and I have to declare that for my own part I do prefer traditional names for my own family, though we have some non-traditional ones. This might reflect my being a sixty year plus aged male!

So I have happily baptised Isaac, Daniel, Joshua and Jonah and so on within the recent past, and you can‘t get more traditional or more biblical than those. However I accept that we do live in a society which is no longer bible –literate, and which is open to media influences in away that former years were not, and so as a minister I have also been delighted to baptise Skyler, Andi-Rose, Logan and Kai. I reflect that many Methodists chose to call their sons Wesley, the Puritans chose name s that were morally strong such as Prudence, and Patience, and exotic names from wars have influenced others, Alma from the Crimean war for example.

These are the names chosen by families, and it seems to me that what is most important is firstly that the parents want to cherish and delight in their children as they bring them up (after all “A rose by any other name would smell as sweet”), and that they wish to bring their child for baptism, making certain promises For the Christian there may be many aspects of the world we are unhappy with, but this is where we are, and we need to take the opportunities we have.

The same article highlighted the fact that the most popular name in England statistically now is Mohammed, which has taken over from Jack, which had been most popular for fourteen years.

That change in itself reflects the change in our society and is another story. You will not be surprised to know that the baptism registers I have do not contain a boy by that name.

But what ever your name, or your children‘s name, or your grandchildren‘s name may we all know what it is to love and be loved in the year ahead. The bible says God is no respecter of persons, and in the giving of His love I do not think he is a respecter of names either.

Review: My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy by Kanye West

Kanye West has been labelled many things, rude, a genius and insane and this album certainly brings it all together. This album has so many ear pleasing moments from the self propelled ego booster of ―Power‖ to ―All of The Lights‖, where he recruits half of the world‘s top artists in a battle between brass and drum n bass. The album‘s title is very fitting because in this album he‘s in his own world and we have been invited in to see how beautiful and how twisted it actually it is. The sound of this album is almost compilation of his previous four, incorporating the pure rap rawness of ―College Dropout‖, the exquisite soul music of ―Late Registration‖ with the amazing sample riddled ―Graduation‖ and the RnB auto tuned phenomenon that is ―808‘s and Heartbreaks‖. The main message in this album is that ―Yeesy‖ is sorry for what he‘s done but he is who he is and that isn‘t going to change but hey if this album has taught me anything its that i don‘t want him to!

Epworth Primary School News Letter Christmas in School As usual we had a very busy Christmas in school. It was made even more hectic this year as the closure for several days at the beginning of the month due to heavy snowfalls meant we had a shorter time to prepare for our Christmas performances.

However, all events planned happened.

The Reception and Key Stage 1 children performed the Christmas story in ‗Wriggly Nativity.‘ As always there is something very special about our youngest children taking part in the Nativity. Everyone sang beautifully and remembered all their words, quite an achievement given that for some children this was their first term in school.

Children in Classes 5 and 6 performed ‗The Best Gift‘ This story was set in a toyshop with the different toys arguing with each other.The toys learnt that the best gift was given in the first Christmas.

The whole school enjoyed a traditional pantomime of Mother Goose at the Plowright Theatre in Scunthorpe (oh no we didn‘t!). The children also enjoyed a Christmas party with the youngest children having a visit from Father Christmas.

Our older children in classes 7, 8 and 9 led our end of term service on the last day of term with traditional readings and carols, providing a very good end to the term.

The New Term The children have made a good start back at school. New topics and themes have been started. In this first half of the term the main topic is based around a book.

The Infants are reading ‗Katy Morag‘,classes 5 and 6 are studying ‗Grandpa Chatterji‘ and classes 7, 8 and 9 are working from ‗Coming to England‘ by Floella Benjamin. The books are studied in Literacy lessons but are also used in work in other subjects particularly Geography and Art. We hope the children enjoy learning in this way.

New After School Clubs We are running a varied programme of lunchtime and after school clubs this term.

This includes well established clubs such as Football and Basketball and new clubs this term such as Art and I.C.T. In one club, Kids Crusine, parents and children are working together to cook healthy food. There are clubs for Infant and Junior children. We hope there is one club to meet the interests of each child.

Epworth Colts U14‘s – 9 Normanby Park U14‘s – 1 McDonald‘s Cup Report 2nd January 2011 Following a lengthy lay off due to extreme weather conditions, Colts were champing at the bit to get going in this League Cup fixture.

The opening period belonged to the hosts as they shook the cobwebs off and got down to business with continual strong forays up field against the former Burton side.

Any early attempts by Normanby to sneak through were easily dealt with by top stopper Johnson allowing Epworth to keep a high line and pile the pressure on the visitors in the knowledge that things were well taken care of at the back.

This allowed the on form Maw to bag himself an early brace and Young to add to the tally not long after. Maw soon increased the score line with a trademark run through the middle and brushed the defence aside to bag a first half new year hat trick for the Belton hitman.

Colts captain Beevers added another for the hosts before long thanks to some clever interplay between Sterling and Tuplin, swiftly followed up by an Ogley cracker to take Colts tally to six so far.

The visitors however weren‘t too content to sit back and closed the gap slightly with a well taken goal of their own.

Stewart, Moore and Maw all managed to add to Epworth‘s tally which would have been in double figures had Tuplin‘s well taken goal been allowed, as they enjoyed a rampant display of football which will hopefully take them on a much needed Cup run. Man-ofthe-Match deservedly given to both Sterling and Maw.

Old Rectory gets second £2,000 cheque A cheque for £2,000 was handed over to Epworth‘s Old Rectory, the second such sum that the town‘s Sue Leese raised during her two years as president of the Lincoln and Grimsby Methodist District Network.

Mrs Lees chose Epworth‘s Old Rectory as her presidential charity and raised the money through selling her own textile goods, sewing as well as jams and chutneys she made.

Mrs Leese is the wife of Rev David Leese, Minister at the Wesley Memorial Methodist Church on Epworth‘s High Street, and much of the jam she sold was made from raspberries grown in the Old Rectory garden. ―We are all very grateful for all she has done for the Old Rectory and the money will be used towards the planned developments,‖ said the museum‘s curator, Rev Claire Potter.

Isle Group of the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust Trekking in Peru and the Inca Trail Our February meeting will be on Thursday February 3rd when we will have Barbara Spencer talking to us about her time spent trekking in Peru, including the Inca Trail. Peru is a country in the spectacular Andes mountains with wonderful scenery and its own unique culture. Walking the Inca Trail through the mountains takes visitors to the spectacular ancient ruins of Machu Picchu which are said to be at their best at sunrise. Hearing peoples personal accounts of experiences like this are always fascinating so do come along and hear them for yourself.

Advance notice of the meeting on March 3rd Mary Porter will be giving us an illustrated talk on Wildlife Gardening on Thursday March 3 rd. She will be giving us lots of tips and ideas on how to attract wildlife into your garden. This should be valuable information just before the spring gardening season begins.

We meet on the first Thursday of the month from October to May at the new hall at the rear of Haxey Methodist Chapel on Low Street starting at 7.30pm. There is a small admission charge of ÂŁ1 and there is a raffle and refreshments. Bird food is always on sale at the meetings as well as at Geoff‘s house in Belton.

Resolve to help the Old Rectory Helpers at Epworth‘s Old Rectory Museum are asking local people to make a New Year Resolution – to give up some of their spare time to lend a helping hand at the popular tourist attraction.

For more volunteers are needed at the Old Rectory – famous throughout the world as the childhood home of John and Charles Wesley, who founded the Methodist movement. ―We‘ve a healthy number of volunteers but need more as we‘re expanding our range of events and could really do with a wider band of helpers,‖ said Rev Claire Potter curator at the Grade 1 listed building.

And the range of additional helpers needed includes people who, after training, could give guided tours both in the Old Rectory itself or around Epworth on the Wesley Trail.

The Old Rectory is also looking for people who could help in its shop, helping to serve refreshments, help with gardening and assist with office administration – to list but a few of the positions available.

However, the Old Rectory is also seeking a new volunteer treasurer and is after a professional with financial management or accountancy qualifications.

The Old Rectory has been engaged in planning for a major development project for the past four years and the new treasurer would have a key role in the progression of it, particularly in the management of grant funding.

The intention is to return the Old Rectory to its appearance in 1716, when the Wesley family was in residence, with a new and external visitor centre and an improved and extended car park.

Women’s Institute (WI) Report First and foremost, although it may be a little late when you read this, a Happy New Year to all the readers and especially to all WI members, whichever group they belong to.

December‘s meeting was cancelled due to the fact that we were two feet deep in snow and ice and travelling was difficult, if not downright dangerous. The content of the meeting, as it was Christmas dinner, was held over to the January meeting.

This meeting began earlier than normal being a start time of seven for seven-thirty. A goodly number of members gathered together at the Red Lion to celebrate a busy and successful year. We gained a few new members, who enjoyed a varied programme of activities and talks alongside the established membership.

All enjoyed a lovely three course dinner, and lots of lively conversation. A picture quiz based on flower fairies of the garden made a few scratch their heads in thought, and a competition to find the nicest Christmas tree fairy, made by a member, was held during the evening.

The next meeting will be on February 8th, at 7-45 in the upstairs room at the Red Lion in Epworth. This will be the Annual General Meeting.

Road Signs Dear Readers, The ending of the red flag requirement in 1896 heralded the ear of the motorcar and some motoring associations took up the business of placing signs. The Motor Car Act of 1903 made local authorities responsible for placing certain warning and propitiatory signs. For crossroads steep hills and dangerous bends.

A hollow red triangle indicated a warning sign a solid red disc signified prohibitions. Speed limit signs had a hollow white ring above the plate giving the speed limit in figures. Other notices were on diamond shaped boards.

Advanced Drivers know what all road signs mean and update their knowledge from time to time with a glance from the Highway Code. Road signs are the shape they are because, even if you can‘t see the sign clearly, say in fog / snow or heavy rain, you‘ll still know when you see a triangular sign that there may be a significant hazard ahead.

That‘s why the Stop sign is shaped octagonal like the fifty pence coin.

If it‘s covered in snow or traffic dirt you still will be able to tell what the sign is by its shape, a Stop sign.

All warning signs are triangular. Advisory signs are rectangular. Round signs are ―the law‖ you must do what they say.

Don‘t ignore them, road signs are there for a reason they provide advanced information to help you avoid danger. You should be extra vigilant about some signs, like those warning signs of schools nearby, as they may indicate a 20mph speed limit ahead.

A pole with two or more signs on it should be read from the top down the top sign being the first hazard.

Also don‘t ignore farmer‘s signs eg: Mud on the road or PYOS, yes (pick your own strawberry‘s) you may find extra traffic movement and pedestrians around the entrance to the field.

The provision of new signs is a continuous process. As the volume and type of traffic on our roads change, ways of giving essential information to drivers and improving traffic flow and road safety have to be reviewed.

New signs and road markings are well and truly tested at certain locations to demonstrate their effectiveness before their wide-scale use is recommended. Special signals and road markings at Professional pedestrian crossings and signs and markings to Mobile Car indicate min-roundabouts and bus lanes ect: it‘s Valeting an ongoing research program by the Highways Service Agency.
