Editors Letter.... Heavy Snow fell in the Isle, lasting nearly a month. Did you know England is experiencing its worst winter for almost 15 years? Whilst I thoroughly enjoyed the weather, I hope everyone gave others a helping hand if needed. Whilst the snow can be fun, it can also be a terrible burden for others, especially the elderly. I hope you enjoy the photos in this issue, courtesy of Mr tony Catherall. Thanks tony for some superb shots. January always seems to be a gloomy month, the excitement of Christmas and New Year gone. We all need cheering up, lets look forward to brighter months ahead with Spring just round the corner. Of course there is Valentines Day and Mothers Day, browse through the Arrow there of plenty of gift ideas.

News, News, News, News, News, News, News... Tony Stace and his Yamaha organ Epworth was definitely the place will not rise up from under the to be, this December. I decided to treat floor when he entertains at Crowle my daughter Jodie and her two friends, Emily and Alice to see Father Christmas at Jonathan David. Methodist Church on Saturday, Councillor Mr Anthony Catherall also treated the March 13th. but the music will be every bit as girls to a visit to M‘s Sweet Shop. good – if not better! Tony, who was voted Organist of the year, 2003-4 and 2005-6, can make the organ sing – and many other things. His audience will be treated to Big Band sounds, Concert orchestras, Brass bands, music from the shows and Tony‘s own brand of humour. He may even give a recipe and instructions for a fruit loaf. First introduced to the organ at the age of nine, he went on to win the WERSI international final in Frankfurt and purchased his present organ in 1991. He is much acclaimed and welcomed by Organ Societies for his individual style of playing and his amusing banter. A great family man, he is now very busy performing all over Great Britain and helping his wife in her cake shop in Catterick. Tickets for the concert can be purchased by ringing 01724 710025

From March Jonathan David on the High Street is now opening on Sundays for afternoons teas. Best Wishes

News, News, News... Due to the very bad weather at the beginning of January we had to cancel our monthly meeting. We were due to have Allan Rowsell and luckily we have been able to rearrange this for March. The March meeting of the Isle of Axholme group of the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust will take place on Thursday March 4th when Allan will be taking us around parts of south west USA. He and his wife spent several weeks visiting this area and he will be entertaining us with some wonderful photographs of the many interesting buildings, people and landscapes they came across. Allan is chairman of the local camera club so the photographs, combined with lots of information about the area and its people, will give us a great evening. Do come along and join us, our meetings are open to anyone; you don‘t have to be a Trust member. We meet on the first Thursday of the month from October to May at the new hall at the rear of Haxey Methodist Chapel on Low Street starting at 7.30pm. There is a small admission charge of £1 and there is a raffle and refreshments. Bird food is always on sale at the meetings as well as at Geoff‘s house in Belton. For further information about the local Trust group and their meetings please contact Geoff or Chris Trinder on 01427 872051. We look forward to welcoming all regular members and new visitors.

A Thought for Lent Wednesday 17th February is Ash Wednesday, the beginning of Lent. Lent is a period of time preparing for two important events, namely the death of Jesus on Good Friday and His resurrection on Easter Day. Traditionally – or to lose weight in preparation for the beach in the summer holiday – people ‗give up‘ things in Lent. The list can be endless, but may include cakes, biscuits, sweets, crisps, wine and all things naughty but nice. There is a lot to commend such self discipline. But how about saving the money you don‘t spend on all these items above and giving it away at Easter to a favourite charity or to the poor people of Haiti. A jam jar on the kitchen table works well, and allows everyone in the family to contribute. Or why not ‗give up‘ a favourite TV programme once a week and take up reading the story of Jesus in the Bible, or praying or simply sitting still, listening for the still small voice of calm – the voice of God Himself. You may have more creative ideas yourself as to how to prepare for Easter. Lent begins with a Communion Service in St Oswald‘s Church Crowle at 7.30pm on Ash Wednesday. I wish you a Holy Lent. Rev Timothy Buckley Rector of All Saints Church

The Isle of Axholme

Where You Live

Your Local History

Adapted by Anthony Catherall

THE ROMANS The Romans under Emperor Claudius invaded Britain in 43 A.D. His armies very swiftly moved north so that by 47 A.D. they had captured most of the land southeast of a Severn-Trent frontier. At Lincoln a legionary fortress was built. Ermine Street and Fosse Way Roman roads meet at Lincoln. When the captured areas had been consolidated the Romans looked north again. In 71 A.D. they struck across the Humber at Brough and across the Trent at Littleborough. Their attack was hampered by the marshy conditions around the Isle of Axholme and further north in the Vale of York. Keeping to the firmer ground the Romans skirted the Isle of Axholme. They set up a garrison town at Danum (Doncaster). They marched north and between 71 and 74 A.D. they set up a legionary fortress at York. Prior to this in 51 A.D. a Roman outpost was set up near Doncaster (probably near Rossington Bridge) in Brigantian territory. At this time the Brigantes and Romans lived in relative peaceful co-existence. Some history books by (Stonehouse & Fletcher) mention the story of the attacks made by the Britons from the forest covered Isle of Axholme on the Romans en-route from and to Doncaster. Eventually the Romans became annoyed at these attacks and apparently sent an army to deal with the attackers. A battle was fought near Austerfield possibly with the famous Roman General Ostorius in charge. The Romans were the visitors and apparently set fire to the forest thus destroying the Britons refuge. Evidence to support this story includes the finding of remains such as parts of swords, heads of battle-axes and a statue of a Roman soldier in oak. One Bronze Roman Coin has been found in 1969 at Epworth and is now in Scunthorpe Museum. It has been dated A.D. 350-353 in the reign of Magnentius. This month and every month; see Epworth in by gone days and Compare to today’s images !

A peaceful scene of Epworth High Street from a Doncaster Rotophoto postcard, circa. 1912. ‗The Grange‘ with the trees outside, was the birthplace of Miss Marjorie Trimingham and later home to Nina Whitehead, both still living in Epworth in 2009? Four cottages known as Trimingham Row come next and in the first lived Blanche Clark, who had retired. Mr. Durdy came next, a blacksmith with his shop within the grounds of ‗The Grange‘. Next-door was Lena Aldham; her brother had a bookshop in Halifax, one day his son Harry and friend Charlie Kershaw came to stay. Kathleen Trimingham due to deliver milk from her Hawking can on the handlebars of her bike met Charlie, they fell for each other and subsequently married. Lastly came Frank Siddle, a booking clerk at Epworth railway station, later promoted to Stationmaster at Garthorpe. The gas lamp stands outside the home of John Charles Clark. In 1926 he had a visitor who stayed, Ishbel MacDonald, the daughter of Ramsey MacDonald, Prime Minister who was invited up by Frank Knowles to formally open the Turbary Mission Church on October 17 1926. The Hay cart makes its way from the crossroads to a farm in West End having to pass the horse droppings in the centre of the road. Photo below taken 19 November 2009.

The Ealand Academy of Performing Arts The Ealand Academy has gone from strength to strength with this year being its strongest yet. In September the school were 1of 2 in the country to be asked to take part in the filming of the new film STREET DANCE THE MOVIE to be shot in 3d. The children travelled to London along with me and On set at Street Dance some of their parents where they filmed at Shepperton studios in London along with Flawless, Diversity and George Samson from Britain‘s Got talent. This was a fantastic opportunity for the children who were over the moon to be working with their idols doing something they love, giving them a huge burst of inspiration. The film will be released in Summer 2010 trailers are now being shown for it. In Competition this year the school has done phenomenally. Having Isabelle Nicholl- Marshall aged 5(at the time) winning the British Championship in Blackpool. Jake Fields Aged 13 recently won all his solos at the last competition winning his street solo, modern solo, tap solo, choreography solo, and gaining the trophy for best boy, highest mark of the competition, highest mark tap and street solos, modern championship winner, and a trophy for best choreographed routine., with many of the other children also having huge success. Including an Intermediate cabaret championship winner and runner up, A junior Championship runner up and 3 rd position and a juvenile cabaret championship 3rd position. We had a cabaret championship winner and runner up in Retford dance festival and 6 of the students gained a place in the bursary (the adjudicator picks their favourite 10 routines of the festival to re-dance) 7 of the students qualified for the All England Championships in Manchester which is a huge achievement . Ashleigh Ward Age 13 got to the final 20 out of 90 at the All England Championships held in Manchester. The school gained a 1st and 2nd place in their junior groups, a 2nd, 3rd and 4th in their Inter Groups and a 2nd and 3rd place in their Juvenile Groups including a best choreography award and a best performance award. The school had 100% pass rate in their exams they took in July and are currently working towards their biggest show yet, and a trip to perform at Disneyland Paris in May. To say I am proud of the students is a huge understatement. The kids are a fantastic bunch of children and are a huge credit to the school and their parents. They work hard and get the rewards. The Ealand They are finally putting Crowle and Scunthorpe Academy of on the map in huge dancing events around the Performing Arts country, and the village should be very proud of Classes in Ballet, Tap, Jazz, Street Jazz, their young people.

Epworth & District Flower Club The flower Club has met twice since the last report in the December issue of the Arrow. At the beginning of December, some members and friends, set off by coach to Chatsworth House in Derbyshire. On arrival, we had time to look at the spectacular grounds, have coffee and dodge the rain, before meeting up for lunch together. Elaine, our Chairman, had made arrangements for a private function room, which was beautifully laid out for us to enjoy a superb, seasonal meal in lovely surroundings. ―Ladies who Lunch !!!!!‖. Well done, Elaine. After the meal, we viewed the festively decorated house, the theme this year being fairytales, really setting the scene for Christmas. There was time for a little retail therapy in the many shops before catching the coach for home, after a brilliant day out . At the end of December, we met at Haxey for a Pink Themed Party Night. The guest was Yvonne Oliver, in her role as representative for Breast Cancer Care,to receive a cheque for £400.00 which had been raised by members throughout the year. Sandra Thorpe had organised a floral quiz, and members provided a delicious supper. Another happy meeting. Some members will meet in January for a meal together, but the next meeting at Stephen Jones Community Hall, will be the AGM, on February 8 th at 7.30pm. The Chairman and committee request that all members attend this meeting , if at all possible, as it will prove to be crucial to the future of the Club. Please try to be there .

Best Wishes

Dear Friends, To many names of houses are very important. I know some who on moving into a new home immediately change the name—the number is something we usually cannot do anything about! Whilst Manor House, The Hall Farm, and similar are generally unexceptional,( if grand), some like Aquarius, Goodison , or Dunromin, will reflect the astrological birth sign, football preference, or time of life, in this latter case perhaps an outdated understanding of what it is to be retired. In my present home we are very happy to have Wesley Manse as the name of our home—clear, factual, and something we are personally pleased to accept. The names of Beach Huts also reflect similar feelings, and if you look at the names of sea front chalets at Sutton on Sea pr Bridlington, the names of these Seaview, Belvedere, Saltspray have often been chosen with care, if not with originality. Publicity was recently given to the man who bought up a domain name on the internet some years ago and hopes to sell it fro millions. It is the domain www.willshemarryme.com . He believes that with a name like this there are many who will want to buy it to market their bridal, wedding products. He might be right. We are now in a new year, and we have brought with us our old familiar names, except for those who married at Christmas and have acquired a new name. One church I know has a notice -board which gives as it were an internet domain name at the bottom of all its notices, www.godswonderfulworld.com May our experience of 2010, be of this wonderful world which we have been given. David. Rev David Leese Wesley Manse, Epworth.

My book review by Liv Title of my book: Bed „n‟ Breakfast star. The main characters in my book are: Elsa, Hunk, Mack, Mum and Pippa. Who wrote my book: Jacqueline Wilson.

The beginning of my story goes like this. Elsa is the eldest and she has hair like a lion‟s mane, it sticks out all curly and orange, and they called her Elsa because there was a lion named Elsa in either a film, or in a book. Elsa has a brother and a sister, Hunk and Pippa. Her mum has a boyfriend called Mack and he is the father of Hunk and Pippa. In the middle they move into a hotel, but it is more like a dump, and their room was so small that you could only fit 15 chairs in it, but the wooden rocking chairs. After a couple of days, Elsa had to go to school, but nobody knew her real life because, she has told them that she is a superstar and all the children in the school ask for her autograph, but she says autographs are sooo last year. At the end the hotel catches on fire and only Elsa can smell it because everyone else is fast asleep, so Elsa screams in her room and Mack jumps up and gets Hunk in one arm and Pippa in the other and, and when he has them in his arms Elsa screams like mad down the corridor “FIRE, THERE IS A FIRE”!!!! and every one comes rushing out of their room and so they all headed for the exit door with their pj‟s on and then the camera people come, with all their gear and Elsa gets to be on telly but she is very embarrassed But after she finishes talking to them she becomes a TV star and Mack finds a new job, and they find a new hotel, and their room was absolutely enormous. You could get 20 elephants in it, and that‟s how the story ends. Good points: The good points are that it describes them very clearly, and it gets all her life in it, and it has a exciting ending where it shows pictures of their new room in their new hotel room.

News letter from Epworth Primary School Studying Our World The New term has started in school with a new topic for all our classes from year 1 upwards of ‗Our World.‘ This is a geography based topic in which each class will be studying several countries and regions. Places chosen for study include Africa, the Arctic, Australia, China and Poland. I am sure the children will enjoy learning about the different countries. Snow Fun During the first week back the children enjoyed playing in the snow. When it first fell it was soft enough for building Snowmen and other assorted shapes. A pity it soon turned to ice! After School Clubs Many children are enjoying attending an after school club, with several new clubs starting. We have clubs for each age group. New clubs starting include I.C.T., Art, Basketball Aerobics and Fitness and Drama. These join well established clubs such as Football, Pottery and Golden Mile. There is something for everyone. We are grateful for the willingness of staff to run these clubs in their own time and also for the Sports coaches who join us. Children’ Centre The Children‘s Centre next to the school is almost finished, although the recent bad weather has slowed progress on the new building down. We are sure the Centre will provide a very good service for families in the Isle and look forward to working closely with the staff there. Best wishes John Hodgkins Headteacher

Belton All Saints Newsletter Fun in the Snow The spring term certainly began with a very wintery feel. Pupils thoroughly enjoyed playing in the snow and the field was quickly covered in snowmen and giant snowballs, one more adventurous group even managed an igloo! Our Eco-committee has been busy setting up a new bird feeding station to help the birds during the cold weather. Thanks to the efforts of staff the weather had only a limited effect on the school and in fact staff took the opportunity to use the snow as a stimulus for work such as creative writing. Below is an example of the poems written in Year 3 Snow

Snow is like a giant white blanket that covers the land, Snow is silent as it rolls down from the sky, Snow feels soft and powdery when you touch it, Snow tastes like fresh cucumber, Snow smells as fresh as an orange. By Freddie

Bringing history alive

Last term pupils in Year 3 and 4 looked at the Celtic and Roman periods of British history. To help bring history alive for our seven and eight year olds, staff include many practical and creative activities looking at history across art and design, music, literacy and other subjects. Scunthorpe museum service provided workshops where pupils were able to dress up in period clothing, examine artefacts and experience day to day activities such as shopping. Pupils also created model mud huts, Celtic designs and Roman mosaics. The topic was rounded off with a superb end of term musical production for parents called. ‗Roman Invasion‘.

Our 25th Anniversary

Later this term we will be celebrating the 25th anniversary of the opening of our school building. The new school was built behind the original building and opened in 1985. As part of our celebrations, pupils will be involved in interviewing past pupils and sharing old photographs. We are aiming to create a time capsule, representing the school as it is now, which can be opened in another 25 years time. I know many of you will have memories about your own time here in Belton Primary School and hope that some of you will be able to share those with us.

Best wishes Sarah Groves Headteacher 34 Please mention “The Arrow” when responding to advertisements

Members of the Axholme Camera Club enjoyed a very pleasant social evening with a challenging quiz set by the Chairman. This audio visual presentation consisted of theme music from well known films and shows with photographs in various categories, animals, birds, mystery objects, places and well known sayings! The music had to be identified at the same time as the pictures, which proved tricky, but fun. Working in teams, 2 teams gained equal points and shared the prize ( chocolate coins, no expense spared! ) A wonderful buffet prepared by the members was enjoyed before a Famous People Photo quiz, which was won again by two teams ( No prizes this time!). A good time was had by all!

Skew Tower by Cliff Steer

Vice Chairman David Ulyett, who has been 'holding the fort', supported by members of the committee during, the long absence of the Chairman, could relax and enjoy the evening. His thanks go especially to George Fiddler and Andy Kershaw who stepped into the breech as and when necessary. A competition of digitally projected images was well supported, giving judge John Whaley something to think about. David Neale won both monochrome and colour sections, with George Fiddler also gaining 20 points in the monochrome. Steve Worland achieved 20 points in colour and 19 in mono. Cliff Steer's colour image also received 19 points. In February, the Photographer of the Year competition, sponsored by Tom Dennis Imaging of Scunthorpe, will be held on the 3rd, with a Landscape/Seascape Print competition on 23rd. Open to the public on Wednesday March 3rd will be a audio visual presentation by Parry Jenkins of Wroot, entitled 'A Musical Tour '. As he travelled around Europe in the summer, this may give us a clue about the content of what promises to be an enjoyable evening. Held in the Church Hall, Haxey at 7.30 pm, there will be a small door charge of ÂŁ1.50 to include refreshments. Best Wishes Lynda

Farming in the Isle at Harvester Farm Epworth Snow and freezing temperatures have kept us very busy these last few weeks making the usually Woolly beasts having their hay simple jobs, where you are in and back in the warmth, tasks that have taken half the day! We had frozen water pipes in the cattle yards, which involved having to bucket water into the troughs, much to the delight of the calves that have a fascination for black buckets. The ewes needed 7 bales of hay daily, in order to keep up the nutrition and were very hungry Ram lambs having breakfast in the snow. greeting us each morning by rushing like a stampede of‖ woolly beasts‖! All the livestock appear to have survived this cold spell with no problems just a little inconvenience and everyone, including ourselves, is now hoping for some warmer weather. We have just started to sell our Dexter meat which our‖ Yorkshire butcher‖ said, with a smile, ―Not bad at all!!‖. Dexter Beef for Sale Hopefully this was a positive comment Reared on grass only At and that our hard work to produce the Harvester farm Epworth best quality beef has been achieved. 10 kilo Multipack Best Wishes

PUB SIGNS Been to the pub lately? If so where did you go? ‗The Red Lion?‘. ‗The Carpenter‘s Arms‘. ‗The White Hart?‘ Did you ever ask yourself why the pub had it‘s peculiar name. What about ‗The Slug and Lettuce?‘ Members of the Isle of Axholme Family History Society are now better informed after a visit by Gordon Tyers who gave a talk at the last meeting on ‗The Origins of Pub Signs‘ In very early days people brewed their own ale (not beer. A foreign drink which did not take hold in England until well into the Middle Ages). Those who brewed well, and it was usually the women, would sell their surplus by indicating drink was available by hanging a green branch from their houses. This was the option for everybody as water was unsafe to drink. As beasts had to be transported by road, stopping places became‘ The Driver‘s Rest‘. As time went on individual names began to appear. With Court Progresses the landowning aristocracy would set up drinking houses to for Royal attendants in order to recoup their losses a visit from a Monarch would incur, such as ‗The Laughton Arms‘ and ‗‘The King‘s Arms‘. Similarly Inns were named after their patrons or Lords of the Manor like ‗The Mowbrey‘. Inns with names like ‗The Ferry Boat Inn‘ and much later ‗The Station Inn‘ indicated places. With the improvement of the roads, coaching house were set up ‗The Coach and Horses‘ The Four in Hand‘ date from these. ‗The White Bear‘ in Epworth is thought to have been named after a ship which took part in the Armada, ‗The Durham Ox‘ after a prize winning beast. Next time you visit a pub have look at its sign. Many were beautiful painted by travel ling artists who would oblige for a meal and a free pint. Can you work out the pub‘s origins? Fun to try.

Redundancy Brings New Challenge for Local Roofing Contractor After gaining 20 years experience with a Doncaster based roofing company, Eliot Grant faced the devastating news of redundancy as his employer succumbed to the recession. There have been many stories similar to this throughout the last year and Eliot was determined to see this as an opportunity. Eliot decided it was time for him to run his own business, ―I just saw this situation as an opportunity. Your own business is something you dream of, but sometimes you just don't have the guts to go for it‖ says Eliot. Eliot contacted Chris Adams from Success Doncaster, he helped Eliot write a business plan and apply for a business grant. ―Chris was a great help and pointed me in the right direction‖. The business grant helped me buy good quality stationary so my business could have the right image I wanted. Contacting local designer Tony Davies, who is based in Haxey helped me achieve this. Within 2 months EPG Roofing was born, offering the public the best roofing services locally. Business started on 1st January 2010 and Eliot is already receiving a steady amount of enquiries, thanks to the Arrow magazines. Eliot specialises in all roofing requirements and is also skilled in all parts of the building trade. If you would like Eliot to give you a quote for some work call him on 07850 976791. If you need any help with your business, developing new skills or finding a job, contact Success Doncaster on 01302 734554.

Driving Tip - Why backwards is best Dear readers, In a car park, do you reverse into a parking space and drive out, or drive in and reverse out? The next time you are in a car park, have a look around and see how many people reverse into the space. You will probably find that most people actually drive in and reverse out. There is no doubt this may be safer/more convenient if the spaces are angled, when you have to load/unload items from the boot or if it would cause inconvenience to other road users. On the other hand, reversing into the space provides you with several advantages. The first of these is that it is safer to reverse into somewhere you can see into (the parking space), rather than reverse out, into somewhere you can‘t (the line of moving traffic). Many people find that it takes them a few minutes to settle into ―driving mode‖ when they start their journey. Therefore it doesn‘t make sense to undertake a potentially high risk manoeuvre such as reversing when you are not concentrating fully. It is also easier to control a car going forwards, rather than backwards when the car is first started and the automatic choke is activated. The reduction in wear and tear on you and the car is useful too – plus the fact you can pull away immediately while the engine is cold, rather than labour it doing a reversing manoeuvre. From a security point of view, reversing close to an object such as a wall can make it more difficult for thieves to access your boot. If you need to exit a parking space quickly for personal security, driving out provides you with better acceleration and improved vision. Over the next week why don‘t you try reversing into a parking space? You may find it helpful if you have electric mirrors, to lower your left (nearside) mirror as this will provide you with a guide to your lateral position. Another option where all the spaces run in parallel rows is to line your car up with the space in front and reverse back in a straight line. This should automatically position you in the centre of the space. If you are interested in further information regarding the courses that we offer, you‘ll be able to find this information on the Institute of Advanced Motorists website at www.iam.org.uk or Tel: 020 8996 9600 Safe Driving.
