Community News High Levels WI The October meeting of High Levels WI was a little more routine than the wonderful September Austrian Evening. The photos of which are on the website, www.highlevelswi.co.uk Instead of singing Jerusalem, we began with the first verse of “We plough the fields and scatter…..” and followed this with our traditional Harvest Auction. The very able auctioneer was Jayne, our President. Everyone took something to auction. There was a great variety of largely home, or locally grown vegetables and fruit. There were sweets, chocolates, biscuits, plants, wines, honey and some very popular and rapidly bid for Chinese lanterns. Another traditional and highly popular product was packs of almond fingers. Members were obviously waiting to bid for these and prices escalated. Other baking favourites appeared and finally some welcome, miscellaneous items. Members totted up their expenditure and passed cash over to the treasurer. For some there were bargains and others much expense but the positive buzz of conversation while members socialised over refreshments indicated a very happy atmosphere and no doubt a healthy addition to High Levels WI accounts. The November meeting will be the AGM with a talk about Lister’s Crisps and the December meeting will be a Craft evening with members choosing to create origami decorations for the Christmas table. There will be some additional refreshments too. An outing to the pantomime at Scunthorpe is arranged and other outings are on the drawing board. Members have the opportunity to join in separate social events in addition to the regular meetings. Into 2024 there is another varied programme planned. Do look at the website, mentioned above and you will see the variety of things we get up to. Come and join us at The Reindeer Inn, Sandtoft 6.45pm start, on the third Wednesday each month.

A community walk organised by Haxey Parish Walkers will start at 10.30 on Saturday December 30th from The Church Hall in Haxey. Situated behind the church the hall has a large car park. The walk will be about four miles finishing with hot drinks and biscuits. A great opportunity to get out and enjoy some fresh air and company in between the over indulgence of Christmas and New Year. Everyone is welcome as are well behaved dogs on leads.

Isle Group of the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust Highlands and Islands of Scotland by Geoff Trinder Thursday December 7th at 7.30pm On Thursday December 7th we will be having an illustrated talk on the Highlands and Islands of Scotland. Well known local naturalist and photographer Geoff Trinder will be taking us on a tour of many of the Scottish islands and the highland region. He will be telling us about the places and the wildlife found there and showing us images of a variety of animals, birds and landscapes. We meet at Belton All Saints Centre (Church Hall), Stocks Hill, Belton, DN9 1PE Everyone is welcome, you don't have to be a member of the Wildlife Trust so please come along and join us. Entrance fee is £1. There will be refreshments and a raffle. For further information about the local Trust group and their meetings please contact Tony Lee on 01427 753831 or Chris Trinder on 01427 872051. Details about the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust can be found on their web site.

Our Kiln Dried Firewood Logs are selected from the finest hardwood and have been through a kiln drying process, which means they are perfectly dried and ready to burn on your open fire or wood burning stove. Light, clean and easy to handle, they also emit a delightful aroma when burnt. The performance of your stove is directly related to the quality of the wood you use. Our kiln dried wood has a moisture content between 10 and 20 percent, ensuring it burns hotter for longer, increasing the efficiency of your stove or appliance.

Crowle Entertainers Panto Press Release This year the Crowle Entertainers’ panto is called Fairytales in the Enchanted Forest. It will take place at the Crowle Community Hall on Saturday 6 January at 2.30 and 7.30 and on Sunday 7 January at 2.30pm. Tickets, priced £5, are available from Crowle Regen Shop, Crowle Tesco or by calling 07966 315733. A limited number of tickets will be available on the door, but early booking is advised to avoid disappointment. If you do come along you will see lots of your favourite fairytale characters: Goldilocks and the Three Bears, Hansel and Gretel, Rumplestiltskin, Red Riding Hood and her granny, the Pied Piper and old Mother Hubbard (played by our wonderful dame, Carl Thompson) and her dog – along with other creatures who inhabit the enchanted forest – some fairies, Robin Hood, a magical talking tree, a superhero and a power crazed woodcutter. There will of course be lots of jokes and laughter, singing and dancing and fun for all the family so do come along and support your local community panto. Director, Gillian Vickers, said “ Over the twenty plus years I have been working with the group we have presented the traditional pantomimes like Cinderella, Jack and the Beanstalk, Aladdin , some of them several times over, so now we like to try something a little bit different with our pantomimes. We aim to keep all the traditional panto elements whilst finding an unusual slant on the old pantomime stories.”

So do come along, boo the baddies, join in with the fun and don’t forget to check who’s behind you!!

South Axholme Academy is thrilled to announce its outstanding performance in the 2023 secondary school league tables released by the Department for Education. Once again, South Axholme Academy has secured its position at the top of the league tables for North Lincolnshire, showcasing the institution’s commitment to academic excellence and student success. The Department for Education’s confirmation of the 2023 outcomes for secondary schools in England reaffirms South Axholme Academy’s status as one of the highest performing secondary schools in Yorkshire and the Humber region. This remarkable achievement reflects the dedication and hard work of both the students and the staff, as well as the continuous support from parents and the local community. Principal, Scott Barlow, expressed their delight, stating, “We are incredibly proud of our students’ achievements and the exceptional dedication of our teachers. This accomplishment is a testament to the collaborative effort of our entire school community. We will continue to provide an outstanding educational experience and support for our students, preparing them for future successes.” The Academy extends its warmest congratulations to the class of 2023 for their remarkable accomplishments. 1st Isle of Axholme BP Scouts November 2023 Autumn nights are perfect for outings in the dark and we have enjoyed a few of these this month. The cubs and scouts shared an outing to Boston Park to feed the animals in an afterhours trip and to explore the Maize Maze! We also spent a session re-learning how to sew on the badges in the right places so that we look smart ahead of the Remembrance parade on Sunday 12th November. We will join all the other uniformed organisations in parading the length of Haxey from the youth Hub to the church in memory of those who have served and those who lost their lives in service of their country. After the church service we will lay a wreath at the memorial. The cubs enjoyed a pumpkin carving session too. Some very creative and artistic skills at work! Other skills we have been working on are our bushcraft survival skills. The scouts spent a Saturday at Lupine Woods in Haxey developing these skills. We built shelters and prepared open fires, lighting them with strikers, and searched the woodland for suitable hazel twigs for toasting marshmallows on. The weather held fair while we made lunch to be cooked on the fire – we made bread twists, experimenting with flavours such as paprika, and wrapping twists around hotdog sausages for variety. For dessert we made smores (marshmallow and chocolate in between digestive biscuits), and fruit baked with chocolate wrapped in foil (banana or apple). After lunch we cleared the site, disassembling our knots and “leaving no trace” and then developed games from natural materials. This month scouts will focus on their signaller badge, making sure they know the NATO phonetic alphabet for carrying messages, and also learning morse code (buzzer or lights) and practising it. We will also be testing our night navigation skills with an adventure in an unfamiliar local area. Finally, we have a plan for restarting the Beavers section - please get in touch if your child (aged 5-8 years) would like to join the newly forming Beavers. Sections all meet at the Westwoodside Village Hall: (Cubs, Scouts and Senior Scouts) all meet on Monday evenings 6pm (Cubs), and 7pm (Scouts & Senior Scouts), and Beavers (tbc) probably on a Tuesday evening at 6pm.

Remember, we are still looking to recruit more Beavers leaders/ helpers for this section. Please get in touch if this is something you would like to do.

All enquiries about Scouts or Beavers should go to Gregor on: gagibb79@aol.com, 22 Please mention “The Arrow” when responding to advertisements and Cub enquiries should go to Ma hieu at: ma hieu_maloigne@mentor.com.

The Isle of Axholme Rotary has recently held two events which have raised funds for local causes. On November 11th we held a Ceilidh at the Thurlow in Epworth with dancing to Most Friendly Folk Ceilidh Band. With BYO snacks and drinks, there was a great atmosphere and lots of hilarity with everyone having a fab time. On December 1st we held our now famous Teddy Tombola at the switch on of the Epworth Christmas lights. With hundreds of teddies to be won it was a busy night with lots of children leaving the stall clutching a cuddly toy. The proceeds from these two events will go towards helping young people and mental health projects. The Isle of Axholme Rotary is a small part of the worldwide “Rotary International,” a voluntary organisation with over 1.4 million members worldwide in clubs, similar to ours, We believe in actively working with our local community, supporting projects, groups and individuals in a variety of ways both practical and financial. Some of our activities this year include a treasure hunt, a tea party for older residents of the Isle, a quiz and a race night. Later in December we will be working in partnership with the Isle of Axholme Lions to bring Santa’s Sleigh to all corners of the Isle so keep an eye out for dates and track Santa on our Social media. We are always looking for helpers. The Club usually meets on the first and third Thursdays of each month. If you would like to come along and see what we do, just contact us and we will organise the rest! You can also follow us on Facebook or contact us directly axholmerotary@gmail.com
