I don't know about you but these dark evenings we are faced with reality TV, which ever channel you choose. X Factor will be coming to a close, Strictly Come Dancing followed by Ant and Dec in the Jungle! Where are those fabulous programmes we used to watch. I was reading an article by Penelope Keith, who has the same opinion. She starred in To the Manor Born a classic for all the family to watch. Since the death of Sir Jimmy Saville for a Christmas Special we will be seeing the return of Jim‘ll Fix It, hosted by Shane Riche. I'm just wondering what the modern take will be like!

Im sure there are plenty of Christmas fayres In the Isle this year. Advertised in the Arrow we have Crowle Christmas Fayre on December 10th.

Epworth Christmas Market will take place in the Imperial Hall Epworth on Friday December 2nd at 12 noon. It is in conjunction with the switching on of the Christmas Lights and Santa's visit in Epworth Market Place at 6.30 pm. The stalls at the Market will include Tombola, Cakes, Preserves, Sweets, Bran tub, Christmas Crafts, Plants and table decorations, Games, Mulled wine and seasonal refreshments. .

There will be a Christmas raffle (for Christmas hampers) and this will be drawn at the end of the Market around 7pm. All proceeds of the Market are in aid of St Andrew's Church, Epworth.

A move to restore an ancient religious book – held at the popular tourist attraction of Epworth’s Old Rectory – has hit a milestone with the first £300 having been raised through donations.

However, the original estimated restoration fee of £1,000 rocketed once the book binder and restorer actually saw the poor state of disrepair of the tome and it now stands at £6,600.

Curator at the Old Rectory, Rev Claire Potter, said: ―The book has 1,000 pages and it was thought that if we could get people to sponsor a page each at £1 a time, we‘d have the restoration fee covered.‖ The Old Rectory is famous throughout the world as the boyhood home of John and Charles Wesley, who founded a movement that went on to become the Methodist Church.

And the book in question is of extreme significance as it carries the signatures of Charles, his wife Sarah and two of their children –also called Charles and Sarah. ―Its title is ‗Contemplations On The History Of The New Testament‘ and we don‘t know if it was donated or has been here all the time,‖ said Rev Potter.

She has successfully obtained a £3,000 grant towards the restoration costs and is hoping to raise more money this way.

But, in the meantime, it is hoped people will continue to make donations and all who do will have their name recorded in a special book with a page in the tome dedicated to them.

―There is another signature in the book but that has been crossed out,‖ explained Rev Potter. ―It is that of a John Jones, who was an early and loyal associate of John Wesley. ―We can reasonably assume the book was given to Charles by John Jones. However, the cost of repair is way beyond the coffers of the Old Rectory. It has survived for nearly 350 years and we are appealing to people to help it survive for another 350 years,‖ added Rev Potter.

People can make a donation in person by calling in at the Old Rectory on Epworth‘s Rectory Street or by post. Cheques should be made payable to Epworth Old Rectory and Sent to Epworth Old Rectory, I Rectory Street, Epworth DN9 1HX. Anyone making a donation is asked to include their name and address, so that this information can be included in the records book.

A good home is wanted for a 30-yearold Hammond organ – being given away free of charge. It is owned by Epworth‘s Imperial Hall Committee but has been unused for many years. ―It may be suitable for a small church or chapel or to an individual with an interest in playing organ music,‖ said Denise Goodwin, chair of the town‘s Imperial Hall Committee.

Anyone interested in acquiring the organ - which is a model 146K, is one of Hammond‘s composer series and dates from the 1980‘s – is asked to telephone Mary Addlesee on (01427) 873622.

The committee hopes that whoever takes the organ, which does not have any speakers, would be willing to make a donation to the Hall, which is a registered charity.

An Epworth pub’s plans to hold a fund-raising event in aid of the Lindsey Lodge Hospice has had to be postponed. The Old School Inn on Epworth‘s

Battle Green was planning to hold a race night later this month, however, due to unforeseen circumstances, it has now been put back until Saturday, December 10. Then, what will be the fifth event this year in aid of the hospice at the popular pub, will commence at 7.30pm.

Throughout the year the Old School Inn has been raising money for the Scunthorpe based hospice, resulting in the pub raising more than £1,800.

On Monday, 7th November a large audience enthusiastically welcomed Andrew Mason, an Area Demonstrator, to the Christmas meeting in the Memorial Hall in Haxey. Included in the audience were several loyal supporters from St Lawrence‘s Scunthorpe Flower Club, who in turn invited visitors to their Christmas Demonstration on Monday, 28th November. Andrew introduced his completely new demonstration, ―never previously seen‖ entitled ―Dreaming of a White Christmas‖, beginning with a door garland into which he put a variety of greenery, silver apples ―so that the paperboy didn‘t pinch them‖ and white roses, completing the tasteful wreath with a large silvery white bow of ribbon ―tied on securely‖.

Andrew continued his demonstration using large basket containers, an enormous, gnarled piece if tree, a very tall glass vase and finally some large pieces of bamboo creating a structure onto which he attached containers of oasis to hold the arrangements. He also surprised the audience when he revealed dangling baubles, stars and fairy lights hanging beneath a pedestal arrangement to add glitz and glamour.

Throughout the evening Andrew carefully used a variety of foliage, different white chrysanthemums, lilies of different sizes and combinations, carnations, gerbera, roses and lisianthus. He kept his audience entertained with little anecdotes and all of the time he gave helpful suggestions such as ensuring that sprayed leaves should be sprayed only on one side, putting groups of one type of flower together and remembering about balance and proportion. At the end of the demonstration Andrew was thanked by Carolyn Drury before approximately a dozen lucky people claimed a raffle prize.

To conclude a lovely evening all in attendance were invited to enjoy the arrangements, a cup of tea or coffee and delicious homemade refreshments provided by the committee.

The next event for the Flower Club members will be the outing to Doddington Hall near Lincoln on Saturday, 10th December meeting in the car park there at 10.30.a.m. In the New Year the members will celebrate with a meal at the Reindeer Inn at Sandtoft on Monday 9 th January 2012.

News from Belton All Saints Church of England Primary School This week our Foundation Stage have held their termly open day, when they were pleased to welcome Mum‘s and Dad‘s into school. Parents joined their children in a variety of activities in both the indoor and outdoor learning environments. Parents enjoyed making lanterns, building walls and mending pipes in the construction area, playing with letters and sounds in the mark making area and getting into role in the ‗Home Corner‘. It was an ideal opportunity for parents to experience a day in our setting and to find out how their children learn through the many play based activities within the Foundation Stage.

Here are a couple of comments made by parents following the day.

AXHOLME CENTRAL POLICE REPORT Carrside Sport Facilities. Carrside, Epworth Criminal Damage, including Arson, anti-social behaviour, youths causing annoyance and cars congregating in the car parking area.

The facilities at Carrside are used by over a 100 young people PC Constable 1169 Police Constable 1839 Police Community of various ages, and includes the Epworth Colts football Sally Jameson Tina Starbuck Support Officer 7577 teams. It is ideally situated and easily accessible with car Stewart Pearson parking off the main road but this locality also suits those with the intention of causing disruption to the facilities at the site.

In recent times the site has suffered from cars congregating during the hours of darkness caus anti-social behaviour, arson attacks on the changing room facilities, burglary and criminal damage to facilities within the changing rooms, Litter and debris is left lying about. These type of offences then cause unnecessary inconvenience to those law abiding people who value the site and the opportunity to play sport. The building is currently under going major improvement work which both the police and those involved in using the facilities do not wish it to have any further disruption caused.

The crimes that have been committed in the past cannot be allowed to continue and the Neighbourhood team together with the fundraisers, those involved in the renovations and those who use the site will work together to seek that the negative actions of a few individuals ceases and allows those using the site to enjoy their sporting activities.

Anyone with information about those individuals who visit the site without good reason and who go on to commit crime and anti-social behaviour, the Neighbourhood team would like to know. Anyone coming to police attention will be dealt with positively.

UPDATE A incident of Criminal Damage at this facility has been reported. There were no suspects or witnesses.

Reports are being received that the building is being frequented by youths and there has already been some damage caused. The building is in a quiet area and thus is attractive to youths congregating. These premises are adjoining to the car park, church, and play area and as such make it a particularly favourable. Neighbourhood staff and incident response officers will be making patrols in the area and any youths found on these private premises will be dealt with accordingly. UPDATE;- Neighbourhood staff continue to monitor this area. A car windscreen wiper was recently wrenched off a vehicle by youths in the area however the victim could not identify which one. Parents of teenagers are urged to make sure they know where their children are frequenting and with whom, and if they are attending at the youth club then they should remain there and not go wandering off. This is a safety issue with the nights drawing in.

Anti-social behaviour within the Central ward during Halloween and Bonfire night period.

Historically this period of the year inevitably brings increased calls for service reporting anti-social behaviour including criminal damage and public order offences. We would encourage anyone affected to ring in and report.

Recent Issues Vehicle stolen = A vehicle was recently stolen from the Central area after thieves broke into a house in order to steal the keys. The vehicle was seen acting suspiciously in the Doncaster area. South Yorkshire officers soon located it and had it recovered. Enquiries are ongoing. Off road motorcycle seized = A male was caught red-handed driving an off road motorcycle on CARRSIDE, the public highway. After admitting he did not have the relevant documentation to do so it was seized by the neighbourhood team and will be destroyed. Vehicle Prohibited = A vehicle was stopped by police after they noticed it‘s brake lights were out. On further investigation it was found that it did not even have the fitting for the lights! It was prohibited by a traffic officer. THE NIGHTS WILL SOON BE MUCH DARKER. PLEASE MAKE SURE YOUR VEHICLE IS IN GOOD WORKING ORDER AND CHECK YOUR LIGHTS. Country Watch Success = 8 males have been reported in one weekend for summons for being found trespassing on land in pursuit of game. AGRICULTURE IN THE 19th CENTURY (continued from last month) The artificial warping of the land is a fairly modern innovation. It is limited in extent; mainly to the areas near to the tidal reaches of the Trent, Ouse and Don rivers. It was also carried out in the Val di Chiana in Italy. The word warping may possibly, come from the Anglo-Saxon ‘Weorpan’ meaning to turn aside.

The first artificial warping appears to have taken place at Rawcliffe on the Humber by a man called Barker between 1730 and 1740. His work was continued by Richard Jennings of Howden. The practice soon spread to the Isle of Axholme.

Land suitable for artificial warping must fulfil certain conditions. The land must be above the low water line of the river; otherwise once flooded the water will not naturally flow off. The land must be below the water level line; otherwise the water will not reach the land. The river obviously must be tidal. A great difference between high and low water makes a river particularly suitable.

The method of artificial warping was as follows. The land to be warped (usually 400 to 500 acres at a time) had to be linked to the river. In the isle, this was either the Trent or the Ouse. The drain needed to be about 50 feet wide. The bottom of the drain needed to be at the low level of the river. A sluice was built at the entrance to the river to control the flow of water. The whole area to be warped had to be embanked. From the drain must be dug minor ‘cuts’ out across the land in a dentritic pattern. When all was ready for the flooding the sluices were opened at low tide and as the tide rose so the silty water rushed up the drain and spread itself evenly over the embanked fields. As the tide ebbed, the water retreated and left behind a layer of silt about one eighth of an inch thick. This process was carried out twice a day spring and summer. The small tides were not utilised. The winter tides were disregarded because they contained too much fresh water. A dry summer with little fresh water in the river produced the best warping. The warp is in layers. With each warping the heavier sand particles settled first to form a thin layer then the lighter clay particles settled to form a layer.

The process took about three years to produce three feet of warp soil. This land is called ‘New Warp Land’. Throughout the process the developers had to satisfy the Court of Sewers. The early attempts at warping usually undertook only 60 or 70 acres and managed without sluices at river entrances.

The enclosure Act of 1795 allowed for some warping to be undertaken in the parishes of Haxey, Epworth, Owston Ferry and Belton. The Enclosure Act of 1813 did like wise for Crowle parish.

The cost of warping depended upon the individual conditions. The average cost during the 19 th century would be approximately £20.00 an acre that included the cost of the drains, the sluice, the floodgates, banking, rent of the land during warping and other expenses. The sluice gate was a very costly item- as high as £2,500. The cost of warping was very much reduced by the constructing of public warping drains at the time of enclosure. The names of these can be seen on Ordnance Survey Map (two and half inches to a mile). Anyone with land adjoining the drains was allowed to cut a channel to link up with the drains. By this method, the cost was reduced by two guineas (21/- 20/equalling one pound) an acre. In 1854 a private company bought Snow Sewer for £5,000 and charged the fee of £21.00 an acre for warping land adjoining it. In 1861 the fee was increased to 25 guineas.

Cart warping was also practised, that is spreading warp soil on existing land by hand. Usually one needed about 400 loads an acre. The charge for carting this warp soil was 0.5 pence per load per mile.

Sometimes trams on specially laid tramways were used. Cart warping, however was a small-scale operation.

Before 1800 only about 1,500 acres of land had been warped. By 1850 practically all land within 3 miles of the River Trent had been successfully warped. No artificial warping has taken place since 1912.

Isle Group of the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust Allan Rowsell will be entertaining us at our December meeting with photographs taken on his visits to California. Allan is a well known local photographer so, with his many wonderful images accompanied by music and tales of his travels, means we are in for a treat. This will take place on Thursday December 1st at 7.30pm. As this is our Christmas meeting there will be Christmas cards on sale and there will be seasonal refreshments.

There will be a work party on Sunday December 4th at 10am. The venue has yet to be finalised but this will be confirmed at the December meeting or you can ring Geoff for details. There are going to be work parties on the first Sunday of the month during the winter.

Our January meeting will be on Thursday January 5th when we have our annual slide and digital evening. This is always a popular meeting when various members show us a short selection of photographs on a wide range of subjects, not necessarily natural history. If you have some photographs to share with everyone please let Geoff or any committee member know before the evening and then the programme and equipment can be organised. You don‘t have to be a brilliant photographer, we just like to have lots of people sharing their interests with us.

Women’s Institute (WI) Report The November meeting was held on the 8th in the Red Lion as usual. This month the speaker was Jean Elliott who is a graphologist. She explained some of the methods that would be used to analyse handwriting, and looked at samples we provided for her. She did some analysis of a few members with varying degrees of accuracy. It was judged to be an interesting talk and a vote of thanks was offered for her efforts.

The craft group met on the 4th Tuesday, which sadly coincided with the thunder storms. Due to lack of electricity the meeting consisted of discussions and planning the craft stall for 3rd December, and our proposed visit to the NEC for a craft show.

A small number of us visited the craft show, and had a great time, getting involved in five workshops, including card making with Stephanie from Create and Craft TV, and snapping up lots of bargains.

The next meeting of the WI will be the annual Christmas dinner. As the date for the craft group falls between Christmas and New Year, the craft group will not meet again until January, but do come up and see us, say hullo and get to learn more about the WI at our stall at the Epworth Old Rectory Craft Fair on 3rd December.

Epworth Primary School News Letter Pink Day A few weeks ago we held our Pink day in school. On this day children and staff wore pink and bought in a donation for non-uniform. We had a Wake Up and Shake Up physical exercise session for the whole school so we could all be PINK together. Pink (and other coloured buns) were on sale at break as well.

We raised £328 to be shared between the Grimsby Breast Cancer unit and Bluebell Wood. Thank you to everyone for your generosity.

Christmas Fair This year we are holding our Christmas Fair in school on Friday 9 th December from 2:30pm. There will be a Raffle and lots of stalls and a Christmas grotto as we are expecting a visit from Father Christmas. The Fair will open with our Young Voices choir performing some of the songs they sang at the Sheffield Arena in the Young Voices concert. We hope to see you there!

Gardening Club Our Gardening Club has grown tomatoes, onions and potatoes this year – we grew 14 kg. of potatoes.

The children have recently harvested the crops. As well as sampling some of the produce by taking some home, the kitchen has used some of the crops for the children to try at lunchtime.

New Cooking Area Our new cooking area has been completed in a small room off the hall. This is the base for our Breakfast Club. The children will also be able to take part in cooking activities in school. Thank you to the Friends of Epworth for raising over £3000 for the area.

Energy Bus We recently had a visit in school from the North Lincs Council Energy Bus. Children visited the bus to learn about renewable energy and how to conserve energy. We even had a visit from local Councillors including Cllr Redfern and Cllr Waltham as well as the Local M.P. Andrew Percy who all came to see the bus.

Westwoodside Playing Field Wins Award Westwoodside Playing Field has won a top award in the CPRE (Campaign to Protect Rural England) Best Kept Village competition judged across the whole of North Lincolnshire.

Whilst Westwoodside picked up the award for the Best Kept Play Area, Belton also won the award for the Best Kept Large Village.

Over recent years, the playing field, off Akeferry Road, has undergone a complete transformation with almost £200,000 of investment in a new play area and a floodlit multiuse games area (MUGA). The transformation was mainly funded by the Big Lottery but was also heavily supported by Haxey Parish Council (and ultimately the parishioners). HPC not only provided grants to help secure the main funding but also provide ongoing financial assistance to the playing field the form of an annual maintenance grant.

Richard Carter, chairman of the playing field association was delighted with the award and said, ―This is the result of a lot of hard work both by the PFA committee and the people who use the playing field, helping to keep the area as clean and tidy as possible.‖ He went on to say that he had done a number of surveys for North Lincolnshire Council and, ―People say it is really nice now to have somewhere to take the kids after school‖ and ―Before the improvements, people only went down occasionally but now there is much more there and some say it is the best play area on the Isle and travel quite a long way to use it‘.

Haxey Parish Council chairman, David Knowles said, ―I would like to thank WPFA for all the tremendous hard work they‘ve put in over the years, these are superb facilities and I often bring my grandson down here.‖ In addition to the award, Fenland Leisure, the sponsors will provide the winners with a free piece of children‘s play equipment, so there will be even more to attract people down to the field.

How to avoid a frosty welcome A very Merry Christmas to all our readers, Weather conditions will be turning frosty, leaving motorists searching for their ice scrapers. Following is for drivers seeking to avoid a frosty welcome: Prepare the vehicle for winter early. Have the anti freeze checked, replace damaged wiper blades, stock up on de-icer, add a frost inhibitor to the screen wash and buy a window scraper and two cloths: one to clear condensation and dirt from the inside windows and one to clean lights and exterior windows. Check that the windscreen wipers are off when leaving the vehicle the night before to avoid damaging the wiper motor and blades when the engine is started the next day. Use external temperature gauges, if the vehicle has them. An indicated temperature of 3°C means that extremely slippery conditions are possible. Remember that ice on the windscreen could mean ice on the carriageway at some points, especially side roads. Observe other road users reactions to conditions ahead as a pre-warning of what is to come Stopping distances will increase in frosty or wet weather. Stay focused, look further ahead than usual and allow for the extra time needed to stop by increasing the gap ahead. Where the road surface is likely to be slippery, stay in the highest gear possible to minimise the risk of wheel spin. Consider setting off in second gear, releasing the clutch and accelerating very gently.

If the vehicles front end begins to lose grip, a front wheel skid will begin. Reduce acceleration, consider disengaging the clutch and steer smoothly. If the vehicle goes into a rear wheel skid, lift off the accelerator, consider de-clutching and steer into the skid. Always ensure windows, lights and mirrors are clear of dirt and ice before setting off.

Axholme Camera Club News The competition this month (Wednesday 19 – 10 – 2011) was a Digitally projected with the subject ―Sports and/or Action‖. The judge was Mr Gordon Quinn CPAGB DPAGB from Wetherby. Gordon had a quick run through and then spent sometime outlining the good and bad points of each image before deciding on the final score.

The entries totalled 58 with 36 Coloured and 22 Black and White (Mono). The scores varied with a large number of members achieving reasonable high marks. There were 17 Coming into land out of the 58 which were warded 18 or over, a very good result showing that the quality of the images was high.

Congratulation to the winners.

After the judging Gordon Quinn who is a long serving member of Wetherby Photographic Society expressed his thanks to the committee for inviting him to judge at such a friendly club, saying that he had enjoyed the occasion very much.

Once again Mr Peter Yeo kindly made a visit to the club on Tuesday the 25th October and attempted to pass on his photographic knowledge to the members. Peter brought along some of his prints and described what make a good panel of photographs suitable to submit to one of the governing bodies, ie RPS and the PAGB. The evening went very well with most members submitting their views on how certain prints should be placed for the best effect as a panel.

Flying HIgh

Both RPS and PAGB state that for the first level LRPS and CPAGB awards, 10 prints must be entered, followed by 15 prints for the ARPS and DPAGB. For the highest awards FRPS and MPAGB then 20 images are needed. Peter expressed that it is not an easy feat to achieve has all images must be of a very high standard, well composed, in focus with good crisp colours which do not clash with the picture Archery at the Gallop next to it. Or in the case of mono the blacks, greys and whites in all the images should look to be standard and balanced throughout the sequence of the panel.

To ensure the members have been paying attention, Peter is coming back in February to judge the competition entitled ―Panels‖. The subject is open and each member is allowed to enter three images to make up his or her panel.
