After the celebrations of the Queens Diamond Jubilee, the disappointment of the Euro 2012 and the exciting build up of Andy Murray at the Wimbledon Final we still have the Olympics to enjoy throughout the Summer! Lets hope we are celebrating with many medals from our home country! I feel exhausted thinking about it!

A popular tourist attraction the Old Rectory in Epworth - is seeking local people willing to donate their unwanted books as part of an ongoing fund-raising event.

The Grade 1 listed building is famous throughout the world as the childhood home of John and Charles Wesley, who founded a movement that went on to become the world-wide Methodist Church.

Plans are in hand to return the Old Rectory to its appearance in 1716, when the Wesley family was in residence, and the sale of second-hand books is part of an ongoing programme to raise money for the work.

Anyone willing to donate unwanted books can drop them off at the shop in the Old Rectory, which is situated on Epworth’s Rectory Street, between the hours of 10am until 4pm Monday to Saturday.

The Old Rectory is a Queen Anne era building set in beautiful gardens. It is a recognised as both a museum and a charity.

WEST BUTTERWICK FIELD DAY SATURDAY 18TH AUGUST At playing field, Ulyett Lane, Start 1.30pm This year the Field Day will be opened by Mr Graham Scorthorne, Mr Arnold Ellis’ nephew.

The attractions include the Grimsby Baptist Church Puppet Power, Ealand Academy of Performing Arts and Dance and the All Stars Taekwondo.

There will be many games and stalls including our new ‘Roll a coin’, Hook a Duck and Coconut Shy. The Titanic Fun slide is also back again by popular demand. Also home made refreshments, BBQ and a licensed bar. There will also be a Fancy Dress competition and races for the children.

Admittance is free and everybody is welcome.

Come and join us and have a fun afternoon out.

Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust (Isle of Axholme Group) is holding a moth morning with bacon butties at Chris and Geoff Trinder’s house, The Croft, Carrhouse Road, Belton.DN9 1PG. 8.30-11.00am Various styles of light traps will be on display, with expert advice by Matthew Blisset (North West Lincolnshire Warden) on methods and identification of a variety of species caught the previous night.

Come along and enjoy a friendly and informative morning.

All our indoor meetings which commence in October are held in the Stephen Jones Hall at the rear of the Methodist Chapel, Low Street, Haxey on the first Thursday of the month at 7.30pm and everyone is welcome, you don’t have to be a member. There is a small admission charge of £1, a raffle and refreshments.

VINTAGE VEHICLE & CLASSIC CARS EXHIBITION AT THE 66TH EPWORTH & DISTRICT AGRICULTURAL SHOW THIS AUGUST BANK HOLIDAY Entrants invited to exhibit at this year’s Lincolnshire based show on August 27th Every year, August bank holiday Monday sees the show playing host to a range of vintage and classic cars, motorcycles, commercials and agricultural tractors, and thanks to there being no age cut off, a mixed collection is always guaranteed for enthusiasts to enjoy.

With 2012’s show day achieving record attendance levels and one hundred and twenty vehicles exhibiting, the organisers are keen to encourage people to consider entering this year’s. Each class of vehicle is judged, with first place being awarded to the winning vehicle and this year, there’s also a best in show award being introduced for the top entrant of the day.

“My wife and I have been organising the exhibitors for two years now and vehicles entering date from the 1920s, right through to classics from the 1980s,” explains Simon Beveridge, North Lincolnshire based organiser of the classic vehicles section.

“The Epworth Show’s always well attended and so it’s a great place for fellow enthusiasts to get together,” he continues. “Plus, attractions including show-jumping, dog shows, livestock classes and trade stands, means families are very welcome too.”

Vehicles are asked to be on site by 9.30am and usually leave at approximately 4.30pm.

Epworth Folk Club met as usual on

Wednesday, 4th July, with 16 attendees for the first meeting after the very sad passing of Eric Payne, the founder and driving force behind the club.

The club will continue to meet and carry on Eric's good work, with Matthew at the helm for the time being assisted by other members during the fortnightly meetings. The club is going to try to update the information that Eric posted about the club in various places, although this will not be easy as our knowledge of where Eric placed information is somewhat sketchy; if anyone comes across any out of date information, please let us know so that we can get it changed: contact Matthew at bluerift@totalise.co.uk With the housekeeping out of the way we had a really good night of singing and playing, with a wide variety of different songs and tunes; not only folk, but some blues mixed in for good measure. We had a range of instruments being played from the usual guitars, through accordions to uilleann pipes ; Eric would have been very pleased.

There has recently been an increase in reports of dwelling burglary, criminal damage, theft of motor vehicle, motorcycles and PC Constable 1169 Police Constable 1839 Police Community scooters being driven in an anti-social manner. There have recently been some arrests made which have ongoing police enquiries. I would like anyone with any information, concerns or is the victim of any instances please ring the police on 101 (Humberside not South Yorkshire) or if an emergency 999, or you can always pass information anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

UPDATE; - Patrols have continued and partner agency work is progressing. There has recently been some damaged caused to an address on Ashtree Close, Belton property belonging to North Lincs Homes and further enquiries are ongoing, we would ask that if anyone has any information regarding any crime or anti-social behaviour to contact the police on 101 or on the below;- Anyone with any information or require any advice or guidance, please contact the Central Neighbourhood team by e-mail;- Tina.starbuck@humberside.pnn.police.uk Stewart.pearson@humberside.pnn.police.uk Susan.fahy@humberside.pnn.police.uk Countrywatch Issues Calls for service to areas of land both owned and used by the farming community have occurred including offences of Criminal Damage, theft, Poaching, off road bikes, trespassers on land with dogs. Times vary thoughout the 24 hour period. A considerable amount of work and liaison has been built between Neighbourhood staff and the owners and staff working on land to engage them and to identify where offences and offenders are committing these acts and routes they use. UPDATE;- Reports have dropped considerably however with yet another busy period for farmers imminent we continue to work with the farming community and would encourage anyone if at any time you become suspicious of any persons please telephone the police. It is far better that we know at the time in order that we can make checks and also to forward onto surrounding police areas as soon as possible, as it is quite usual for such people to frequent other areas during the course of their activities. Just because the people you see appear to look like they are legitimate this may not be the case so Humberside police do encourage local communities to report anything that on the face of it does not appear normal. We have leaflets which contain advice for parents and riders of the various bikes being used off road. Please contact PC Starbuck if you wish to have one delivered to you or you can call in at Epworth Police Station when the front counter service is available by a member of staff, generally on a Monday or Thursday during 0900 to 1500hrs, to avoid a wasted journey it may be prudent to call on 101 to check that the front desk service is running that particular day. Countrywatch has seen an increase in numbers on the Isle and this is open to membership from farmers, landowners and other land users at a small cost. This membership also includes access to a text messaging service which warns of information pertinent to those members, for example hare coursers, deer poaching, and theft. Anyone wishing to join please contact PC 1839 Starbuck for further information and an application form. We have now also got members joining from just outside the Humberside Police area and we encourage everyone to promote the scheme and new members are always welcome. Any on-going matters or suspicious activity can be reported on the new Local police telephone number of 101 OR, if any information is to be passed then please feel free to e-mail the Neighbourhood team using the details as above.

Recent Issues BELTON = A total of six people were arrested on Ashtree Close, Belton for offences of Affray.

DRIVING OFFENCES = A driver was recently stopped for driving offences and it was then identified that cannabis was also in their possession so they have been prosecuted for the cannabis and road traffic offences. Another driver has been issued with a fixed penalty notice for not wearing a seat belt. TRESPASSING ON SCHOOL PROPERTY = Three young lads have been interviewed and are going through various restorative justice procedures for climbing over a local school fence for no good reason whilst the school was locked and secured. RED MEANS STOP = A driver was issued with a fixed penalty notice after driving through a red traffic light. VEHICLE SEIZED = A vehicle was recently seized by police for being used in an anti-social manner. TWO MALES ARRESTED AND CHARGED = Two males are currently awaiting trial for offences of dwelling burglary, theft from motor vehicle and theft of motor vehicle.

Amateur Dramatics The Epworth Mowbray Players No.3 By Anthony Catherall

By December 1950 the momentum and popularity for each new production was in place and the audience came from all over the Isle.

The very popular comedy “Pride and Prejudice” by Helene Jerome was held on three evenings in early December. Pride and Prejudice had first been produced at the St James’s Theatre. London on 27 February 1936 and had received great reviews.

Gertrude Lees the producer was a hard taskmaster and could bring people to tears in her quest to obtain the best performance from her now budding actors. Performers produced what she asked of them and the audiences loved it. Costumes were now being obtained from as far away as Manchester by Messrs. S.B. Watts and Co, along with Misterton Amateur Dramatic Society. They even reduced the price of the quaint programmes to three-pence knowing that they could sell out each of the three nights on Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday December 6th, 7th and 9th.

THE MYSTERY OF LANCASTER LANE

Several postcards of the above scene have the title 'Lancaster Lane' Epworth, as the above circa 1907. However to date, there is no written evidence that the road down to the Market Place from Rectory Street had such a name officially. Twice in the Epworth Bells of 22 February 1890 and again on 19 August 1899, there appears an item on street names. It states clearly, 'That the road down from the Rectory to the Albion House, be Albion Street. Today it is known as Albion Hill.

Could it be, it was locally called Lancaster Lane because the house pictured at the top of the road No 26 (see smaller picture) near The Mowbray Arms was and still has the name 'Lancaster Villa' above its door, I do have a postcard of a view looking up towards 'Lancaster Villa ' and addressed to Mrs J. Matthews of 'Lancaster Villa' dated 1904. Above to the left we see the old water pump positioned approximately where the statue of John Wesley stands today that catered for the eastern side of the village. The wall below it is of the garden of Grove House in Queen Street.

Opposite, the wall of the Old Rectory house and gardens. Lower down on the right is the house of farmer Richard Hill, known as 'Whisker Dick' then the ivy clad Fern Villa once occupied by Harry Rimmington, Edmund Brown, and in the 1960's Arthur Brown running his potato business from there.

For me the above picture is the prettiest view of Epworth that I have seen to date. The lower picture taken in March 2012 is in sharp contrast albeit taken in a different season.

A Time for everything!

There is a very well known verse from the famous wisdom of Solomon that was part of the lyrics of a pop song in the 1960’s— “for everything there is a time.” You may remember it!

In the understanding of a time for everything, the truth is that there is a time for all things. Times for loving and hating, for peace and war, tearing and mending, and so on. It is true of our own experience, we see it for ourselves, with time to work, and time to rest, time for sleep and time for action, time for being happy and time for being sad.

For some there is also a time to be married!, As the law stands in England at the moment the time to be married can only be between the hours of 8.00am and 6.00pm on any day of the year.

However there has been recent and advance publicity though that these hours are being extended—considerably extended -so that any time will be a time to be married! Yes midnight weddings will be a possibility!

The comments have suggested that there will not be many vicars or ministers prepared to do these. I’m not so sure—for as we find for ourselves, there is a time to say yes.

The day dawned wet and the forecast was for it to be wet for most of the day. This was not the promising start to Epworth Music Day that we had hoped for.

In previous years the event was called Fete de la Musique and 21 st June is International Music Day. We had decided to change the name this year to show that the event covered all types of music and performance.

Undeterred by the weather, musicians from Epworth and further afield made their way with instruments and voices to make good music in the village. We attracted performers from Leeds, Retford, Boston Spa, Lincoln, Austerfield, Shipley, Harrogate as well as from the Isle. There was music outdoors – in the grounds of the Wesley Church, at the Old Rectory – to the delight of visitors from South Carolina – in the Market Place, near Gravel’s and generally in the streets. The sounds of music could be heard from 11am till 5pm.

In the evening we had planned to hold a concert outside near the Coop, but with the poor weather continuing we decided to move indoors to the School Room at the Wesley Church. An appreciative audience were entertained by 3 Man Bob (rock music), Hannah Hobson (soprano), Katy Robinson and Dave Prebble (folk music on cello and concertina), the Keepers (folk duo) and de Mowbray’s Musicke (Tudor music on period instruments).

A great day was held and everyone who was present said how much they had enjoyed the day and were looking forward to Epworth Music Day 2013 – when it will be on Friday 21st June. Put it in your diary now to make sure you don’t miss it next year.

A group of school children are taking part in Lifestyle 2012 with the Humberside Police. The group, "Alexanders Angels" include Hannah Piggott, Freya Trippett, Georgia Sitch and George Shapland. They are all 12 years old and year 7 pupils at South Axholme.

They have decided to help to raise £90,000 for Alexander Strong, a 7 year old boy from Epworth, who has been living with Neuroblastoma since he was four. He had a large tumour removed last year but he is undergoing a second course of aggressive chemotherapy after another tumour appeared under his arm and spread across his chest. The £90,000 is needed for Alexander to go abroad for treatment, to either Germany or the USA. After already holding a stall at Epworth Primary summer fair, Alexanders Angels have organised a charity flower demonstration with all the ladies at Fountain Court Florist at the Wesley Chapel in Epworth on Wednesday 15 August, a charity darts night at the Old School Inn Public House on Saturday 18th August, a fun day with a raffle at the Old School Inn on Sunday 19th August and finally a sponsored walk on Sunday 2nd September. They want as many members of the community as possible to come together to help Alexander and his family.

We are appealing for anybody who wishes to run a stand (jewellery, cakes, preserves, crafts etc) at the fun day on Sunday 19th August. We are asking £20.00 for the rental of a stand and then whatever the stallholder makes on the day is theirs. If any singers, musicians, magicians, entertainers etc wish to donate some of their time, or if anyone would like to rent a stall then please call Samantha on 0771 424 0112.

EPWORTH PRIMARY SCHOOL NEWS Sandpit for the Foundation Children We have just finished building a large sandpit in the outdoor play area for Reception and Stepping Stones children. Thank you to all parents who contributed to our joint Sponsored Wake Up Shake Up earlier this term which raised £481.

To officially open the sandpit we had a ‘Beach Party’ with the children wearing ‘beach clothes’ of t-shirt and shorts Parents and Grandparents joined us for the official openin.

The children had ice cream and the parents tea and coffee.

The weather held off just long enough for the children all to play together in the sandpit before the heavens opened again!

Summer Fair We also didn’t let the rain put us off our Summer Fair, although we had to hold this indoors because of the rain.

We had a range of attractions including Go Karts, Bottle tombola, Face Painting, Wonky Bike Competition, Tombola, Cake Stall, Nail Painting, Tattoos, Ice Creams and Strawberries. We also had a Grand Raffle Draw with 50 prizes from local and national businesses. Thank you to everyone who supported us. We raised £1300, a credible amount in the circumstances.

Rounders and Hockey Tournaments Some of our older children have recently taken part in Rounders and Hockey tournaments with other Isle Primary Schools at South Axholme. The children have done very well and won both competitions.

Good behaviour and sportsmanship was also shown so well done everyone.

Trentside Federation School News (St Martin’s Owston Ferry and West Butterwick C of E Primary Schools) There is always so much to squeeze in, amongst the usual curriculum studies at this late point in the Summer Term, such as Sports Afternoons and Leavers’ Services. However, somehow we have managed it…….

St Martin’s held an ‘Ancient Olympic Games’ on 29 th June. This ‘rounded off’ the children’s studies on the history of the Olympics. Events were; running, Chariot Racing (wheelbarrow races), horse racing (riding hockey sticks), discus, shot putt and long jump.

Winners were presented with traditional Olive Wreaths as they were in Ancient Greek times.

Sport has been a major focus these last few weeks although the weather has been against us! Sports Day trophy winners at St Martin’s were ; Harvey Hardman, Keane Bates, Sam Hattersley, Tiffany Frost, Ben Carby, Alexia Heighington, Alfie Temperton, Joseph Layton and Kristie Monument. For the first time ever this year, there were two of the three ‘House Teams’ with the same number of overall points.

Therefore, both Trentside (Blue) and Melwood (Green) share the trophy. Kinnard runners weren’t far behind either, so it was an evenly-matched event this year, that had us all on the edge of our seats! Thank you to all who helped to make this an enjoyable occasion, especially the PTA for providing those delicious strawberry teas!

West Butterwick had a special visitor on Monday 9th July following a previous ‘School News’ article in the July issue. Mrs Wade, of Belton, read about the Infants running their own stalls in order to raise money to buy an African drum. Mrs Wade, who lived in Zambia, very kindly came in to present Class 1 with an African drum that she has had since 1972. Mrs Wade talked to the children about the people, the animals and stories of ‘close encounters with lions’! Mrs Wade also brought in a magnificent 5 metrelong snake skin which enthralled the children. The school would like to say a big thank you to Mrs Wade for her kindness. We will treasure her African drum and remember all of the interesting stories she told us!

On Thursday 5th July, St Martin’s Reception and Nursery visited the Yorkshire Wildlife Park. Luckily the rain held off for the visit! The children enjoyed observing all the different animals, learning about their habitats, diet and general characteristics.

A memorable learning experience this term has been ‘Enterprise Day’ – this project has been running for a year now and this was the third Enterprise Day. The children were split into groups with a child from every year group. Enterprise groups were led by Year 6 and their challenge was to create a new Olympic Sport. This involved designing a flag, writing instructions and rules, creating a poster with personalised slogan, culminating in a powerpoint presenta30 Please mention “The Arrow” when responding to advertisements tion that was hopefully to persuade a panel of judges that theirs was the best new sport!

The winning team was led by Eden Longland and the sport was ‘Hectic Hockey Holes’…. The intention now, if it ever stops raining, is to hold an additional Olympic Sports Event using all of these ‘Enterprise Sports’ !

INTERTESTED IN A NEW LOCAL FOOTBALL TEAM IN WESTWOODSIDE? A new football team in westwoodside has been set up by local man Kevin Blow.

The team will play in the Doncaster senior league Saturday afternoons men's league.

Although its a men's league the team is a majority of 17 year olds, due to the fact that after playing with their local league Junior football team in Scunthorpe, there was no where for these young lads to go to play at 17! Most of these young men now have a purpose and they are not on street corners!

I need help from anybody that can spare time like myself. I have spent a small fortune getting the team up and running and with thanks to Paul at the Duke William we were able to join the league.

We still need a little financial help to pay for pitch hire, track suits etc. If there are any local businesses who would like to sponsor the team please get in touch.

I also need a treasurer a secretary and any others that are willing to help, we still need local young men to join and play!

WEST BUTTERWICK QUUEEN DIAMOND JUBLIEE BALLON RACE The Community Events Team are delighted to announce the West Butterwick Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Balloon Race held on Monday 4th June 2012 has produced over 30 replies from people who have found our balloon tags.

Apart from several found in Cambridgeshire , Suffolk & Essex, more exciting is the fact that several were picked up in Northern France & Northern Belgium, and the down to South Germany near Frieburg not far from the Swiss border. But to our amazement the several of the Balloons flew over (it is presumed) the Swiss /Italian Alps more that 4.400 metre high to land in Northern Italy around Verona and South Tyrol.

However the winner went even further and was found in Faenza near Ravenna. Over 1150 miles travelled.

Our winner was M Chapman of West Butterwick. So congratulations on the ÂŁ25 prize from 600 balloons released on the day.

Dear readers, Driving in heavy rain.

Motorway spray caused by heavy rain, can cut visibility to zero. Lorries blast up an almost impenetrable wall of water that fills the air, coats your windscreen and wipes out your view totally for vital seconds. Plan wet-weather motorway overtakes carefully. Hang further back out of the spray and observe the road and traffic ahead. When conditions are most suitable (the route ahead is clear and straight), put your wipers on fast setting and move safely, quickly, and decisively past the lorry. With good planning your view should be impeded for only a fraction of a second at worst.

Heavy rain creates pools of water across the carriageway that can cause a car to aquaplane. This is where the car skims across the surface water and has no contact with the road. Aquaplaning affects your control by reducing the affect of steering and braking inputs. If you see water pooling or streaming across the road do not brake or accelerate, instead ease off the accelerator, grip the steering wheel firmly and try to steer straight ahead. Standing water will pull on the steering wheel and you may need to make corrective inputs when you hit Tarmac again.

Disengage cruise control. On hills diagonal streams of water often cascade across the carriageway. Be extra vigilant and slow down gradually in very wet conditions.

Braking distances increase hugely in the rain. Compensate by slowing down, looking further ahead, and increasing your following distance.

Driving in Fog, Avoid driving in fog whenever possible. Most motorists drive far too fast and much to close together in foggy conditions. As always, ensure you can stop safely within the distance you can see clearly. Constantly ask yourself, if the next thing you saw in front of you was a stationary vehicle involved in an accident, would you be able to stop in time? Keep to the left-hand lane, if visibility drops below 100meters drive on dipped headlights and put your front and rear fog lights on as soon as you see fog developing, fog density can change in a matter of a few meters. You can go from a light mist to dense fog in a second so ensure you drive accordingly. Use windscreen wipers on the intermittent New Car Tyres. setting to clear the fine mist that collects on your Puncture Repairs. windscreen. The strain of peering through thick fog quickly makes you tired. Take regular breaks. Take extreme care as Wheel Balancing. Consider using lowmounted front fog lights which will help you pick out the road markings or the verge at the edge of the road.
