Community News Epworth Imperial Hall and British Legion Branch are holding a VJ Commemoration week-end.

West Butterwick Field takes place this year on Saturday 22nd August starting at 1.30pm on the Playing Field at Ulyett Lane.

Attractions this year include performances by Puppet Power and a static display by Twiglet & Friends (owls, an eagle, and a hawk) The competitions this year include a decorated bike competition, a fancy dress competition (For under 8’s), baking a Victoria sponge and the most unusual vegetable.

The Titanic Giant slide is returning together with a bouncy castle, hook a duck and other attractions for children.

There will be many stalls including tombola, children’s tombola, bottle stall, crafts, books and a Slush machine.

There will also be refreshments, burgers and a licensed bar. Children’s races will also be part of the programme. At the end of the event, there are goody bags for children still present.

We hope you will join us at West Butterwick on 22nd August for a family day out.

The Local Neighbourhood Policing team are continuing to monitor the situation in this area. Anyone coming across such an incident should report it immediately to the police on Humberside Police telephone number 101.

Any offenders will be dealt with in a positive manner.

Belton Greenway = Recently there has been no reports regarding this issue however the situation is still being monitored.

Dwelling Burglaries = With the warmer weather the Local Neighbourhood Policing Team are asking residents to be extra vigilant regarding the security of their homes and outbuildings.

Please be aware that even a small window left open can be targeted by an “opportunist” burglar.

If you out of in your garden make sure that your house is secure and that nobody can just walk into your house undetected. Information Even though burglaries are regarding as a Neighbourhood Action team meeting priority Pc Mark Raper is stressing the importance of keeping your premises and outbuildings safe. At the moment there are different means being used to gain entry such as forcing rear doors or windows or just taking the opportunity when a door or window is left open in the hot weather to “sneak in” and steal whatever is to hand. Also in some cases the owner’s own vehicles are being stolen to leave the scene. Please take car keys and valuables upstairs with you when you have retired for the evening. It is better to be safe than sorry.

Epworth Show is on Bank Holiday Monday August 31st August 2015. The event takes place on Epworth Showground, off Carrside, Epworth and is a fun day out for all the family. TRANSIT At last it was our turn to move off. We moved off in big Lorries with trailers, carrying 80 men, packed like sheep, but it was grand when we got going, there was a nice breeze. So once more we pass Tobruk the petrol dump was still burning. I could see our little bathing spot and wished that I could have a dip; we had not had a wash since being captured. So up the Derne road we go, leaving Tobruk behind us, Jerry frying instead of us.

We had a couple of Itie (Italian) drivers, what dreams they were. They kept stopping to go souveniring, going for a quarter mile or more leaving us to it. If we had had food and water we could have hoped it, but I don’t suppose it would have been any good, we were so far behind our lines by them. Anyway while they were away hunting so did I, I got an Itie coat, and it sure came in later.

Once two Germans officers passed us, and fired at them.

Our stop for the night should have been Derne, but our two bright sparks got lost, so we spent the night with some sleeping in the Lorries, and some outside, had to wake the drivers next morning.

Set off again, and went to Derne, where we got some water, biscuits and bully, (beef) also just managed to wash my face for the first time since been captured.

We then started for our long journey to Benghazi, (approx 290 miles) what a ride, how I stuck it I don’t know, I was as near passing out as ever I have been in my life. Our lorry at last broke down, so we had to get into others which were already full, we could neither stand up or sit down standing on each other’s feet, it was awful. We had Libyans as guards, they were swine’s, and kept firing over our heads.

We were also coming more in contact with the Ities, they reckoned that they had taken Tobruk, but I never saw myself an Itie there. They were very different to the Germans who did not gloat over us but seemed to me to be sorry for us. The Ities thought they were going to Cairo and Alex.

The scenery from Derma to Benghazi was beautiful, trees, hills, and mountains, with the sea on the right in parts. There was one pass, which wanted skilled drivers to go through it. Marvellous, how they ever made a road through it.

At four o clock next morning we arrived at Benghazi, put into a compound and the first thing I wanted was to get laid down and go to sleep which I did for a few hours. Awoke next morning with palm trees all around, until we came to the wash places and latrines, one could not get at the water for Indians, oh they were pests. Hunger was the next thing, hardly any food, I had one drink of coffee in the ten days I was there (half a mug) one small loaf and one small tin of bully per day, no smokes, only two per day.

Some of the men had money when captured and were giving ten shillings up to a pound to the Ities for a packet of cigs and the same price for a loaf, they were flogging rings, watches, socks, anything they had for food and smoking.

The thing that pleased me most was when I got a card to send to my darling and prayed that it would reach her.

I think nearly half the camp was down with diarrhoea and dysentery. Ten days we spent there, our next place was to be Italy. We left Benghazi, July the 4th. Mary’s birthday, so that’s another day I’ll remember. At the dockside it reminded me of when we left Glasgow? Now & Then - Then & Now No 76 By ANTHONY CATHERALL

This month and every month see Epworth in bygone days and compare to today's images!

When this young lad got out his bicycle from his garden shed (probably purchased from Bailey's in Chapel Street) in the morning this picture above was taken from wherever in Epworth, I wonder if he imagined then, that over a hundred years later, thousands of people would be looking at his photograph in Market Square Epworth. This postcard posted in 1909, shows the Market Cross adorned with local children, similar to a photograph we had taken in 2005, when 'us lads' were putting up the Christmas lights. The eye is also drawn to F. Cawthorne's shop left, where the Co-op is now. I believe he was known as Freddie, he was a real multi-tasker with all the services that he provided. Bill posting (as his charming advert shows in the 1904 Epworth Almanack), was top of his list and we see evidence of that on the left of the photograph. What is also interesting, is where he had to go pick up his parcels. I particularly like the term; 'A Trial Solicited'.

Little has really altered below in my photograph of June 2015, save a few chimneys, street furniture and increased transport.

The Isle Choral Society, under the direction of musical director, Nicholas Haines, held their Summer Concert in St Andrew’s Parish Church, Epworth, on Saturday 4th July. Entitled “Songs through the Ages” and Proms in the Church, music ranged through from medieval times until the present, giving a varied programme to a capacity audience. The programme included Bohemian Rhapsody with Dave Ripley [no lyrca suit!!] as soloist, The Monks Chorus - better known as In a Monastery Garden and Pam Layton providing the whistling. Eileen Staveley gave a beautiful rendering of “Laudate Dominum”. The concert finale was the ever popular flag waving with music from the Proms.

We have to say goodbye to Jonathan Bramwell, who has been our accompanist for the past two years, due his work as a Baptist Pastor taking him to a new post near Manchester.

Jonathan will be greatly missed as he has given invaluable support to our musical director and the Choral Society. However, we are pleased to welcome Robert Fields who has moved back into the area and will be taking up the post of accompanist when our term begins on Monday, 14th September 2015. Rehearsals will be in the Imperial Hall, Epworth, ready for the Christmas Concert on Saturday, 5th December at 3.00 pm in the Haxey Methodist Church.

TRUST

A few weeks ago whilst taking my early morning cycle ride along the paths around home, I came across a car stuck in a ditch—not by the side of the road but the on green lane bridle path, between Epworth and Belton. This is not a usual sight! The driver was still with his car, and asking if I could help he said he didn’t think so, as the ditch was too deep.

The explanation was that at three in the morning he was being guided by his SATNAV and had followed the directions which appeared to take him up the bridle path, and when realising this was wrong, had tried to turn around and the car had gone down the ditch. I hope the cans of lager in the boot were merely coincidental. All seemed beyond our help, but then another passer- by offered to go and get his four wheel drive to try to pull him out. This was tried and with a smell of burning rubber worked, and the car continued its journey.

In the early days of navigational devices we heard about drivers being directed down inappropriate roads, but not so much now. We can so easily trust the devices implicitly, but they are only as good as the information they have, and of course the judgement of the driver. When we turn on a Satnav, we must not turn our own judgement off!

Thank goodness for the helpful person who provided his own vehicle, a strong tow rope, and some gentle advice. We need to be careful what we trust in.

2015 Belton Barrow Race Results Following the huge success of the 2015 Belton Barrow Race the Belton Barrow Race Committee would like thank a few people.

Trentside Federation School News (St Martin’s Owston Ferry and West Butterwick C of E Primary Schools) There is always so much to squeeze in, amongst the usual curriculum studies at this late point in the Summer Term, such as Sports Afternoons and Leavers’ Services. We have managed it…….

West Butterwick held its Sports afternoon on Wednesday 1st July and I am pleased to say that this year the weather was very kind to us. Overall Winners at West Butterwick were the Red Team. Sports Afternoon at St Martin’s didn’t quite go ahead with blue skies (first attempt!) but the second attempt was much better….. Trophy winners at St Martin’s were Aeron Sowerby Bell, Joe Layton, Seb Chorlton, April Frogley, Maisie Speers, Jack Harrison, Noah Davids, Abigail Platt and Abbie Garner . The winning team overall was Kinnard (Red). Congratulations to all concerned and thank you to our helpers for making these occasions so enjoyable, especially to Janet Foreman (Nanna Cakes) for providing lots of delicious scones & buns and our other wonderful ‘Grandma’ Mrs Bennett.

The Key Stage 2 children from St Martin's School and West Butterwick School recently attended an 'explosive' live show at The Baths Hall, Scunthorpe. The afternoon started with loud bangs and the scientists for the afternoon, Mike and Emma, led us through an entertaining and energetic journey of the mysteries of how things work. Cannons being fired across the audience and children getting up on stage, rubbing balloons on their hair to create static energy, were just a few of the St Martin's pupil 'Joss' up on stage 26 Please mention “Theof Arrow” conducting a 'hair-raising' fascinating practical demonstrations the show. when responding to advertisements experiment linked to 'static'

Looking back over the last few weeks, there are a number of special events to mention in addition to the above. The Lighting the Candle groups of ‘pupil worship leaders’ planned and led worship this term on Friday 10th July and Wednesday 15th July. The themes were Courage and Faith (‘Daniel in the Lions’ Den’ and ‘David and Goliath’).

West Butterwick and St Martin’s ‘Future Stars’ celebrated their sporting achievements this year with the opportunity to visit the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield. EIS Sheffield, is the largest multi-sport facility in England and athletes such as Jessica EnnisHill can be seen training at the indoor arena. The children were given a tour of the stadium and engaged in an athletic and boxing activity. The children thoroughly enjoyed the day and it allowed them to experience some of the facilities needed to pursue a career in sport.

As we are now approaching the end of the academic year we are preparing for our Leavers’ Services.

RESCUE DAY 7 Lakes Country Park, Crowle 2015 Photos and text by Anthony Catherall

The annual Rescue Day held at 7 Lakes Country Park, Crowle, and North Lincolnshire have a dedicated pool of enthusiasts who regularly attend this wonderful informative event hosted by Humberside Fire and Rescue Service.

It is a joy to see thousands and thousands of families seeing first hand, what happens around them every day of their lives. The amazing work of the rescue services around the United Kingdom, here promotes, Safer Roads, Waterside Safety, Fire & Rail safety.

Current publicity explains that Rescue Day is the biggest event of its kind in the world. Just to observe and experience how the rescue services works, is in itself, a life changing experience in gaining knowledge of how the industry has changed for the better in 2015.

Lately there had been significant improvements and changes to the training, infrastructure and equipment of our Rescue Services. I was overawed and excited by what I saw and heard at the event. Because of this, my plea to the public and especially our elected councillors who are responsible in part to the funding of such services is to go along next year and acquaint yourself by having a good look around to see just were part of our Council Tax money is spent. For the public it’s your hard earned money that goes into the pot, see for yourself an outstanding result.

A magnificent new feature has arrived at 7 Lakes Country Park during 2014, through Volker Rail in association with Tata Steel and Network Rail. Together they have installed a length of railway display track incorporating a level crossing, complete with a large locomotive standing on the line.

Level crossing safety has been in the news lately in our area. Now with this wonderful initiative, the public can be taken through enactments (by the three main rescue services, British Transport Police, Network & Volker Rail), Exactly what happens at a level crossing incident where a train has collided with a road vehicle. This will show people the importance of being safe near or on a level crossing.

For me these two re-enactments during the afternoon were by themselves well worth the low entrance price on the day.

The added concept of Rescue Day in the joining of the Rescue Services with the trade is to be applauded. Unlike most Fire Service exhibitions in the UK that I used to be involved in, they were for trade only. Here all three main emergency services work hand-inhand together for the public’s enjoyment and to raise vital money for local charities.

The set up, the venue the ingenuity and organisation is first class and highly appropriate.

Each year, an average of 400 people drown in the UK. Within 7 Lakes the water rescue services can be shown at their best how to deal with this danger extensively in the 40 acre Clearwater Lake.

Water itself is vital to the Fire & Rescue Service in regards to protecting and saving property.

However water itself can be a major hazard to people and property when there is too much of it in the way of flooding. Humberside Fire and Rescue Service are one of the twelve services in the UK that have specialist equipment for dealing with these types of problems High Volume pumps with associated equipment that can deliver 7,000 litres a minute for fire-ground feeding and sixinch suction hose are carried for high density flood water removal is available on these specialist vehicles.

Command and control at any emergency is vital for the successful conclusion. For larger incidents necessitating more senior officers and high technology, each Fire Service has a command and support unit on stand-by.

Receiving satellite communications on sate of the art television screens these units employ inside an uncluttered working environment giving affectability at major incidents.

Based at Stocksbridge Sheffield retained Firefighters Dave Clarke and Son Ross stand on the steps of the Unit.

Police Officers were in abundance keeping control of an event at huge as Rescue Day. They had presence too, in the way of emergency vehicles, transport, demonstrations, static exhibitions, and the Humberside police Helicopter.

Similar to Firefighters, Police Officers have to undertake a rigorous training regime including confined space training.

At Recue Day they brought one of their units to allow children the fun of being attached to a suitable harness and then lowered by hoist into the cylindrical facility.

There were queues all day and over 500 children were able to share a unique experience.

A large fleet of Ambulances and equipment were in attendance on the day and joined in the various demonstrations both static and operationally.

For 21 years Lincs & Nott’s Air Ambulance has operated in our area. Each mission costs over £2,000 and they fly three a day. Several events are held throughout the counties to fund this life saving facility which needs about £1.9M to operate every year.

It has become some sort of a trend for commercial vehicles in public service to have advertisements all over their body work. This now includes Fire Appliances of one sort and another in different counties about Britain.

However there is only ONE in Britain that has been uniquely wrapped in blue livery. An operational Rescue pump is stationed at East Hull Fire Station part of Humberside Fire & Rescue Service. Through a partnership between the Service and the Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) of Hull 2020 (who funded the project) HF&RS & CCG are raising the awareness of Prostate Cancer UK and support its Men United campaign.

THE 2015 ISLE OF AXHOLME TRACTOR RUN 21 June 2015 When, ‘Three Men in a Pub’ conceived the idea of the ‘Isle of Axholme Tractor Run’ their dedicated chosen charity The Lindsey Lodge Hospice at Scunthorpe, was delighted with the news that yet another event was to be put into operation to assist with their never ending need for fund raising.

Geoff Fillingham, Richard Thompson and Stuart Lindley all experienced farmers have an enduring pastime that grips them like a magnet. Most summer weekends they gather together with like minded friends for one of a number of tractor runs, in eastern England.

They had everything going for them when their own first run was held on 22 June 2014.

Having two large farms between them in Epworth, a varied collection of personal and working tractors in their sheds, plenty of room for assembly and storage of visiting trailers, and supporting wives and families, it got off to a flying start when nearly £2000.00 was raised With their knowledge of their own local countryside, unknown and little used tracks were traversed winding between the crop fields and out onto narrow country roads. This can only happen with the assistance of adjoining and cooperative farming friends who open padlocked gates allowing the convoy to travel across their land. With the camaraderie and support of their many tractor enthusiasts who they meet up with regularly and right behind them, their very own tractor run was sure to succeed, and so far it has.

What is it about tractor runs that seem to grasp the public’s imagination?

Perhaps the most striking feature and very apparent if you are in the vicinity is the different vibrant sounds from the exhausts of the huge range of vintage tractors of all shapes and sizes as they pass on by.

Could it be the bright colours and designs of the many different models (47different ones entered? The most popular was The Massey Ferguson 35 (11 Tractors) No.2 The Fordson Dexta (6 Tractors) No. 3 The Massey Ferguson 135 (5 Tractors) Dedicated owners spending hours servicing, painting and polishing their machines that have great visual appeal to the avid onlooker and tractor fan?

Perhaps the long convoy chugging through sleepy country villages with the various contented looks of the drivers enjoying their 7 mph drive fascinate people.

Whatever it is, they are fast becoming an enjoyable pursuit and now a regular feature of the countryside, in Nottinghamshire, Lincolnshire and Yorkshire.

These runs start around April each year, some of the more established runs can attract up to one-hundred and fifty machines.

At 10am on Sunday 21 June 2015, The Mowbray Arms Epworth was the starting point for this year’s run. A new thirty mile route around parts of the Isle of Axholme encompassed five villages with eighty-four (84) tractors attending, some travelling over 100 miles from as far away as Norwich in Norfolk and Hutton in Lancashire, double that of 2014.

The convoy is professionally and immaculately well stewarded with Stuart Lindley leading in his big John Deere, Richard Thompson on his Ford 3000 in the centre and Geoff Fillingham bringing up the rear in one or other of his stable of tractors complete with a trailer (in case of breakdowns none yet I believe in both runs) all in contact by walkie-talkie radio.

For the first time this year one particular street in Epworth, West End Road, was bedecked out with balloons roadside and a good line of cheering spectators..

Another is that two sisters from Australia, Roxy Morton-Owen (from Darwin) and Alexis (Lexi) Owen (Brisbane), on a first visit to England, drove from Southport early on the Sunday morning to see a Tractor Run for the first time, standing close to the action at various points on the run they together brought plenty of smiles on the faces of the male drivers as they waved and cheered at them, their reaction ecstatic.

Being Fathers Day, our own Sheridan Smith (who wouldn’t miss a chance of being with her family at any time) brought her parents along to have a look and support the cause.

Yet another first, was that we had this year at least six ladies riding in or on tractors.

Lastly the Trent Bank at the White Hart in Owston Ferry was packed with the machines side by side whilst lunch was taken there, courtesy of Peter Smith, family and staff.

All this couldn’t happen of course without the tremendous help and enthusiasm of the many, helpers, raffle ticket sellers, stewards, collectors, drivers all of them that helped to make the event so successful, they must be thanked indeed for a superb effort The organisers were inundated with comments of praise on the route, the organisation and of course the dry warm weather was a real plus.

The date for next year’s run is currently being discussed, but it will be around the same period in June. Come and join us in 2016.

On the 2nd July 2015 there was a presentation held at the Hospice where Fundraising Admin Manager Vivian Vincent gratefully accepted a bucketful of cash totalling £3,601,07. (front cover)

Peter Barnard, director of Epworth Music Day, said “What a great day! It was wonderful to see so many people about in Epworth enjoying the music and the spectacle of 49 different musical acts. People came from near and far to witness it and the traders seemed very busy.”

So many thanks to all the performers for playing, to our financial supporters – Epworth Town Council, North Lincolnshire Council, Woolgar Insurance and Graham’s Bakery – without whose support we could not have put the show on – to all the volunteer stewards who were really the unsung heroes of the day, and to my fellow directors – Kate Billmore, Nicky Thomas, John Lambert and Peter Davies whose unstinting work in planning for all eventualities and then making it all work so well on the day made the day such a success. A great team effort!

The evening concert in St Andrews was quite remarkable for the quality of the music played and the large audience enjoyed a rare treat. We were really pleased too that Setting Sons organised the evening gig at the Queens Head.

Boston Park Farm Tearooms and Maize Maze is a fantastic place to take toddlers and young children to play in the indoor and outdoor play areas whilst you enjoy a relaxing pot of tea in the lovely tearooms. The Maize Maze will be fully open from the 18th July, it consists of 5km of paths which, being only 5 feet wide, give the feeling of exploring through the jungle. We are open from 10am until 5pm every day with last entry to the maze at 4pm and entry prices are ÂŁ6 each and ÂŁ20 for a family ticket (any 4 people).

As always there are all the animals to see and feed, including alpacas, goats, donkeys, sheep, chickens and new piglets which are due anytime. New chicks are also hatching out all the time and there are currently 2 very cute baby rabbits.

There are lots of special events throughout July and August. On Monday 27th July we have Reptile Rendezvous visiting us to show us all of their wild and wonderful animals, from lizards to snakes and tortoises, come and have a hold of one if you dare!

Each year we celebrate Yorkshire Day this year it is on August 1st when there will be ferret racing, falconry displays as well as Yorkshire games and all flat cap wearers get in half price.

We are also very excited to announce that Wonder

by Wonder partied will be joining us on Friday 14th August for a Frozen party!

There will be Elsa, Olaf and Christof here all day singing and dancing, come in fancy dress and join in all the fun!

Following the success of the Little Farmers toddler group there is a Little Farmers day on Tuesday 25th August where there will be tractor and trailer rides during the day, a range of farm crafts to complete and a special quiz as well as being able to handle all the baby animals.
