Community News Isle Group of the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust Thursday April 5th Members annual photographic night This is always a popular evening when anyone can bring along a small selection of photographs to share with the group and tell the story behind them. These can be on any topic which interests you, not necessarily to do with wildlife. It could be an interesting place you have visited or something you have seen, either locally or further afield, you just need to bring them on a memory stick. There will also be a very short AGM beforehand. Unfortunately due to the snowy weather the March meeting had to be cancelled but we hope to arrange for Charlie Barnes to tell us about beetles at a later stage. All our indoor meetings are held on the first Thursday of the month in the Stephen Jones Hall at the rear of the Methodist Chapel in Haxey on Low Street at 7.30pm. We look forward to seeing all regular members and new visitors, everyone is welcome. There is a small charge of £1 and there is a raffle and refreshments.

ROYAL AIR FORCE LINDHOLME Adapted and Edited for publication by Anthony Catherall Acknowledgement to Margaret Draper On 24th November 1940 a brief note in the unit diary reveals that a Squadron Leader Walker had assumed command of No 50 Squadron; we now know that Squadron Leader Walker was to achieve great fame in the Royal Air Force. He is now Air Chief Marshal Sir Augustus Walker, KCB, CBE, DSO, DFC, AFC. (Retired 1970). Throughout the early part of 1941, No 50 Squadron continued its strike role and in March under Walker’s command it was detached to St Eval for several days so that it could take part in daylight raids on German battleships in Brest. A member of the WAAF serving at Lindholme at this time recalls the young Walker: “The diminutive Squadron Leader Gus Walker was commanding 50 Squadron. He always tore around the Station on a large bicycle, which he could only stop by crashing into the nearest wall and consequently, one always saw him with bits of sticking plaster here, there and everywhere”. (1)
In June 1941 No 408 Squadron (Royal Canadian Air Force) was formed at Lindholme but it never took part in any operational missions from the station because within a month it had moved to RAF Syerston at the same time as No 50 Squadron left for RAF Swinderby. They were replaced by the Polish Squadrons, Wellingtons. Left Polish Crews forming up before funeral ceremonies for the crew of F/Lt Ostaszewski on 29 March 1942 at Lindholme. Thus a new page in the Station’s history began as the whole offensive effort was now in the hands of the Polish Air Force, although naturally the aims and methods of the attacks remained constant. The command structure left control of the Station in British hands with the new station commander Group Captain W Sanderson and subsequently his successor, Group Captain A P Davidson, having overall responsibility. Station Administrative posts were duplicated: each RAF Officer had a Polish counterpart. The squadrons were administered by Polish personnel and the operational aircrews were Polish. Lindholme was thus a centre of Polish resistance where men exiled from their own country could carry on the fight against their country’s invaders. The newcomers had a considerable impact on the station; a WAAF clerk at Lindholme then, has vivid memories of a Flt Lt Kachanowski who jumped straight through a front window of SHQ: “When a Wellington crashed right between the NAAFI and married quarters the pilot stepped straight out and said “O-ki-kay”. G/Capt Makowski was the only one who could fly the Station Walrus. There was considerable friction between RAF and Polish personnel, the latter having most of the WAAF colony in raptures and in time there came to be a midnight torchlight search of WAAF billets to see just who was in them and who shouldn’t have been. (2) The Poles flew their first operational mission from Lindholme on 23rd July 1941 when eight aircraft were detailed to attack Frankfurt. Their missions followed the pattern of their predecessors in No 50 Squadron. Successes and failures are recorded impartially in the station diary; perhaps a typical extract for 16th December 1941 will make the pattern clear: “Six aircraft from No. 304 Squadron and six from No 305 Squadron were detailed to attack Ostend. Nine of these aircraft successfully completed their task … one crashed on its return in the vicinity or Thorne … one did not return to base and no more has since been heard of the crew, captained by Squadron Leader Blazejowski. This officer had completed twenty-six trips and the news that he had been awarded the DFC came through the following morning.” (3) 1) (3)

Epworth Music Day 2018 This year’s Epworth Music Day falls on Saturday 23 June and we are starting to put the plan together to make it as much as success as it was last year. Last June we attracted nearly 50 different groups of performers across a wide range of musical genres, and we hope to be able to provide a platform for a similar array of musical talent in 2018. We already have had expressions of interest from over 35 groups who want to play. If you would like to perform at Epworth Music Day 2018 we would like to hear from you as soon as possible. We would also welcome anyone who would like to help to steward the event on the day. So, put the date in your diary and spread the word! Please email at peter.barnard@me.com or call Peter Barnard on 01427 873937.

Successful Concert by Joint Isle Choirs
The concert held in St Andrew’s Parish Church Epworth 24th February 2018 by The Isle Choral and guest choir The St Cecilia Singers raised in excess of £400 for the charity “Wish Upon a Star”. The choirs joined together for some numbers and many compliments were made on the composition by Musical Director, Robert Fields, of “Pie Jesus” when the St Cecilia Singers were “echoing” the Isle Choral in the wonderful Ringers Gallery in the church as part of the restoration work. Robert Fields gave a vote of thanks to Barbara Tune and her singers for their enthusiasm, Linda Lawcock from the charity and all the other people involved in the background. This was the first venture by the Choral Singers to invite another local choir to join us with the varied programme enjoyed by all so, in view of its success the committee of the Isle Choral have invited “Take Note” choir from Haxey to join us on 25th March in St Nicholas Church, Haxey, when the programme includes Faure’s Requiem and a supporting programme of popular music. For anyone interested in finding out more about the Isle Choral Singers please check us out on facebook, website or telephone enquiries to 01427 871485. Rehearsals are held every Monday from 7.00 pm in the Imperial Hall, Epworth.

PREMIER LAWN CARE COMPANY LAUNCHES NEW ‘MAKEOVER’ SERVICE BRITAIN’S premier lawn care company has just launched a unique ‘Makeover’ service to give consumers in the Doncaster East area the perfect patch – without the hassle of re-turfing. GreenThumb’s Lawn Makeover programme guarantees exceptional service to create a wonderful lawn – at a fraction of the cost of laying new turf. Its Makeover is unique, says the company, because as well as killing and completely removing worn-out grass, choking moss and problem weeds, its expert staff re-seed the clean soil with an exclusive grass seed mix, top-dress with recycled, organic and sustainable compost to nourish its growth, and then make a number of aftercare visits. Doncaster East GreenThumb branch owner, Chris Potton, says the Makeover is ideal for new or existing customers in older or new-build properties, who want to replace old, dying or poor-quality turf full of coarse or weed-grasses, with the most luxurious, green and weed-free lawn possible. Mr Potton says: “With at least 10,000 lawn treatments a year, our 2,500 customers are amazed at the 'miracles' – in their own words – our professional lawn operatives can perform. This Makeover is our biggest and best yet!” Mr Potton, who has been running the branch since 2009, says: “Re-turfing is often the first thought – but our Makeover is far superior and saves you around 50%. Based on an average lawn size of 160m (approx. 190yards) it’s around £8 per square metre. Larger lawns are even less per square metre.” Doncaster East covers Thorne, Moorends, Barnby Dun, Edenthorpe and Armthorpe areas as well as Finningley, Westwoodside, Epworth, Crowle, the western side of Scunthorpe and Messingham. To contact GreenThumb Doncaster East for a free, no-obligation Lawn Makeover appointment and quote, call 01427 238442, email doncastereast@greenthumb.co.uk or request a visit online at www.greenthumb.co.uk/branch/doncaster-east#contact

Epworth and District Flower Club were delighted to precede the business part of their AGM in February by welcoming Terry Condliff. Terry was in attendance to receive a cheque for £2000 for the Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire Air Ambulance. The donation was made following a very enjoyable and rewarding Open Evening in November when Jonathan Moseley entertained many flower lovers from the Isle of Axholme and further afield. Anne Everatt, the chairman, introduced Terry who gave an interesting short speech about the Air Ambulance. He told us how it had been based at Waddington for 24 years but would be moving soon to a more central base for its services to two large counties. He described how the new helicopter is large enough to carry more than the injured party and the speed with which it is airborne and can reach a casualty. He told us that many casualties in Lincolnshire are motorcyclists but there are also heart attack victims, older people falling from height and assorted road traffic accident victims. The Flower Club’s cheque will go towards the operating cost of £2300 per day! for which Terry, on behalf of the Air Ambulance was very grateful. The meeting continued with the usual agenda issues. There were reports on the interesting activities of the Club over the year, thanks given and a very well received breakdown of the finances of the Open Evening. The raffle had produced a very sizable income and with the profit from the ticket sales enabled the large donation described above. Election of Officers was executed with little problem, as was the remaining routine business. The programme of events for the coming year was circulated before business was concluded and everyone enjoyed refreshments provided by the committee members. The March meeting will be held in the usual venue in Haxey: the Stephen Jones Community Hall and will begin at 7.30pm on Monday, 12th. Subscriptions will be due that night. Members will have the opportunity to participate in a Spring Workshop for which there will be an additional charge. The April meeting (9th April) will be a members’ meeting when demonstrations will be given by two or three of the Club’s members. These are usually very enjoyable meetings when we can admire each others talents. You may care to join us either by becoming a member or just visiting. Our regular meeting nights are the second Monday each month and we meet at 7.30pm in the Stephen Jones Community Hall in Haxey. Come and see if we would suit you!

Botanical Engineering Exhibition at Owston Ferry Botanical Engineering is the brainchild of two born and bred Lincolnshire lasses; artist and floral designer Caroline Jackson & innovative Flower Arranger Lynn Bottamley. Their description of Botanical Engineering is – a unique form of art work using natural plant materials juxtaposed with industrial or domestic items for their aesthetic qualities. The quest for an exhibition venue was influenced by the need for an industrial backdrop, hence the Botanical Engineers first exhibition will be held at the historically important Owston Ferry pumping station in the Isle of Axholme. The108 year old building houses a preserved Marshall steam engine, Marshall boilers and Drysdale centrifugal pumps; all of which helped to change the shape of the surrounding landscape. The eclectic creative team includes a Florist, Electrician, Hair stylist and of course, floral artists and engineers. This team will create a unique exhibition in and around the pumping station; mixing natural plant materials with the industrial artefacts found within the building, creating a unique artistic installation. If you have an interest in art, sculpture, photography, floral art, history, Steampunk or steam engines then visiting this exciting, free event is an absolute must. The exhibition will be held over two weekends 30th June/1st July and 7th/8th July 10am-5pm, there is no charge for entry but donations are most welcome and will be divided between the Botanical Engineers and the Pumping Station preservation society. There will be some extra attractions such as a botanical “curiosity shop” & plant bring and buy stall on Saturday 30th June, and a Steampunk Picnic on Sunday 8th July. The historic pumping station is situated on the banks of the River Trent, South Street, Owston Ferry, DN9 1RP. Look for the tall brick chimney. Owston Ferry is home to The Crooked Billet &The White Hart which both serve food. The Smithy Museum on the High Street is also worth a visit whilst in the area. For more information search for Botanical Engineers on Facebook and Instagram or phone Caroline 07708697860 - Lynn 07784699168.
