We are a very friendly club and welcome any newcomers. The annual subscription is £10.00 plus £2.00 for each meeting attended (reduced for under 18s) which includes tea/coffee and biscuits. St Andrew’s Church has been awarded a grant of £44,000 by the Heritage Lottery Fund to undertake restoration work on the historic bells and organ. The envisaged total cost of the project is 48,600 and the grant will defray ninety percent of the costs. Work expected to be undertaken within the next few months.

The church has a fine peal of eight bells which were installed to commemorate the Coronation of HM King George the VI. They have had very little work done on them since they were installed approximately eighty years ago and they are now showing signs of distress as work on the wheels is an urgent priority. Attention will also be given to the rope pulley assemblies, clappers and bell frame. Opportunity will be taken to install a degree of sound control which will allow enthusiastic bell ringers to ring long peals without disturbing members of the community. This will also facilitate the training of recruit bell ringers.

The April meeting of West Butterwick and District Gardening Club takes place on Monday 27 th April at West

Within the church is a two keyboard manual organ which is to be given a strip down clean along with other repairs. Opportunity will also be given to install a new blower in a sound proof box.

Butterwick Village Hall at 7.30 and is a talk by Doug Stewart on ’10 ways to improve your garden’.

Doug is a well known gardener and co presenter on Radio Humberside’s Sunday morning gardening programme ‘The Great Outdoors’.

Everyone is welcome – all ages and all levels of gardener Members £2, non members £3 There are no meetings in May due to Bank Holidays.

The June meeting is on 1st June and is a talk by Denise Cotterill entitled ‘Hooked on Hostas’.

A workshop is being planned for November to allow members of the community to learn more about bell ringing and the organ. Informative leaflets on the bells and the organ will be produced.

This is a follow on to the successful project ‘Conserving and Sharing St Andrew’s. To this the Parochial Church Council is extremely grateful to the Heritage Lottery Fund for their contribution of £457,500.

Isle Group of the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust News AGM Our next indoor meeting is to be held at The Stephen Jones Hall, Low Street, Haxey on: April 2nd 2015 at 7.30 pm. The Neighbourhood Team continue to patrol the area and if you do see anyone committing acts of anti-social behaviour towards you or other residents in the area please contact us on 101. We have been working in partnership with other agencies to tackle this issue and this will continue, anyone found to be causing anti-social behaviour will be dealt with positively. We have started to receive a small number of calls regarding off road bike being ridden in the area. If you do witness this behaviour please contact is immediately providing a brief description of the bikes and riders if possible and where they are.

Belton Greenway. Rubbish has been dumped on the green lane around Belton particularly the old railway line. There has been a multi -agency clean up along with volunteers and a substantial amount of rubbish has been cleared. Please use other options available to you rather than dump rubbish in the area such as the councils free waste recovery scheme Belton Pavillion. Reports of Anti-social Behaviour and Criminal Damage = We have not had any recent calls reporting any issues in the area but the neighbourhood team continue to patrol and monitor the area and anyone found committing any offences will be dealt with positively.

Information During this week a Traffic Offence Report was issued to a driver of a vehicle causing an unnecessary obstruction in the High Street, Epworth (across from the doctor’s surgery).

This vehicle was so positioned that pedestrians had to walk on the road. The parking of vehicles in this manner is causing problems throughout the whole of the Isle of Axholme. The Local Neighbourhood Team is asking drivers to think of other road users when parking their vehicles and be considerate of the needs of others.

*Leaving El Adem Xmas Eve, Xmas Day and Boxing Day we had bully beef and biscuits, we got our Xmas dinner about a fortnight later which consisted of one Turkey between 16 men, and Xmas pudding, also 1 small mince pie each. We were without smokes until we managed to get some from the RAF canteen. *Next place was back to 75 and 76 Dromes.

Next, right back to 116 Drome on Feb 2nd 1942 a short stay, we thought we might get leave from thereabout no, on the 19th. Feb we went to Berhara, (Wahat al Bahriyah, meaning The Northern Oasis) passing through Sollum pass. As we went down to 116, we went down Haffys (probably Halfaya) Pass, what a road. Sollum pass though is a fine piece of work. I never forgot that place, In all the three months that we were there, I don’t think there were three days without sandstorm’s, except when we were flooded out. The Boston planes were there with South African airmen.

We had a few raids and warnings nearly every night. When Tobruk was getting raided, we could see the barrage, it really was a pic ture to see, but at the same time, was sorry for those who were there, we little thought we should be in it later and it sure ain’t no fun. Some of the British Legion came to do guard while we were there, they were all sports and to talk to them what they had gone through in their time, most of them had done something wrong, and then joined the Legion. *The ME’s (Messerschmidt’s) gave us a few daylight surprises. General Smuts paid his men a visit. Duke of York paid us a visit. Our food there was worse than awful. We got more from the Staffs (Staffordshire’s) than from our lot. *Our gun went to ordinance, but still had to do guard. 2nd. Lt. Stuart was our officer up to this place, then 2nd. Lt. Hurst took over, and we knew him as Fanny. All he thought about was getting washed and shaved, boots blacked, he didn’t know the first thing about the gun, it was pitiful to see him and old Joe, that’s our Major, when a Brigadier paid us a visit and asked them questions, about the gun, etc.

This month and every month see villages around Epworth in bygone days, this month West Butterwick and compare to today's images!

Lark Rise to Candleford, the popular BBC television production, comes to mind when observing the postman's uniform in this equisite tranquil Edwardian scene above, circa 1912. (The year the Titanic sunk, and Captain Scott and his team were beaten to the North Pole). He poses with his bicycle proudly, in front of the letter box attached to the wall, with three adults and five children outside the Axe Post Office and general store at Grey Green Belton. Has it recently been doubled in size?, new brickwork is clearly visible on the right-hand side. A round sign on the door says 'We Sell Hercules Overalls'. Bicycles were becoming very popular a hundred years ago. The Robin Hood cycle shop next door not only sold cycles, but look in the window and we see Paraffin lamps for sale. On the outside is the sign 'Pratt's Spirit'. A long hedge in Westgate Road surrounds a large house amongst the trees, a wall abounds on the left side on the road. So vastly different to my picture of 2nd August 2014. I hope the Dutch gentlemen and his charming wife from Belton I met in Home Bargains in Skippingdale Retail Park Scunthorpe in February, cuts this one out too. Thanks for your nice comments.

Society’s Members See Isle From The Air An entertaining and informative talk awaited the 30-plus members of Epworth Men’s Society who attended their March meeting in the town’s Red Lion Hotel.

It was given by retired archaeologist Malcolm Dolby, who lives at West Butterwick, and was entitled Axholme from the Air. Mr Dolby, whose career included being Curator of Museums with Bassetlaw District Council and Keeper of Antiquities for Doncaster Metropolitan Borough Council, has more that 1,000 aerial images of the Isle.

“The River Trent was the ‘motorway’ for the Isle right through to Victorian times with settlements on either side of it being connected by ferries,” said Mr Dolby.

He said that by far the most important village on the Isle had been Owston Ferry, with boats running from the River Humber through it and down to as far as Gainsborough.

“As far as the Isle was concerned Owston Ferry was the main artery for the Trentside settlements. At one time it had a population of about 2,200 people and had more than 30 shops,” said Mr Dolby.

The current population of Ferry, which was the only settlement in the Isle to have ever have had a castle – built upon the site of an earlier Roman fortification, is now about half that number.

Mr Dolby, who illustrated is talk with CD images projected onto a plain wall, explained that he is not a pilot himself but had relied upon friends to take him up to get his photographs.

He went on to say that most of the ancient features of Isle villages and towns are not clearly visible at ground level and can be seen only from the air.

The Epworth Men’s Society holds monthly meetings from October through to June with a variety of speakers and trips to places of interest.

Next on the agenda is an evening visit to Doncaster Air Museum in April.

WORLD BOOK DAY 2015 The day marked as World Book day in March provides an opportunity to celebrate all those literary figures we love. Especially I have enjoyed some years being invited into a school, and entering into the spirit of the day, being asked to dress as John Wesley and talk about the most well- known book he wrote, his Journal. Now I agree he is not everyone’s image of a literary figure, but the Journal he wrote is a major work.

You perhaps like me will have been surprised with the news of this year’s book day, from the Sale High School. Firstly for banning a pupil, eleven year Liam Scholes, for dressing as the male hero of “Fifty Shades of Grey”, Christian Grey, together with his cable ties, and then only to be accused of double standards because one of the teachers was allegedly dressed as a serial killer. I’m not sure which book that character was from.

We will all have our own perceptions of books that have been important to us, and not simply those it may be appropriate to dress up as the character. It is commonly stated that the world’s best seller is the Bible. There are though many of characters in that book, some of whom also might not be acceptable at Sale High School. There is the seductive Delilah, the sexual plotting of King David, the betrayal of Judas, and so on.

Whoever we are, our experiences will encompass good and bad, good examples and bad examples. In our search for role models for World Book day or any other day, we all need good judgement and taste to discern what is most appropriate. The one quality that is sometimes most needed by students and teachers!

Epworth and District Flower Club News Have you thought about joining the Epworth and District Flower Club? We meet at 7.30p.m. on the second Monday of each month in the Stephen Jones Community Hall in Haxey. We have demonstrations and sometimes workshops and at some meetings we have a plant stall. There is usually a raffle and always refreshments when we can chat with friends old and new. You might like to give us a try. The next meeting will be on Monday, 13th April when Di Smith will demonstrate her flower arranging skills titling the evening “Somewhere under the Sun.” At the March meeting Ann Everatt welcomed everyone, including some new members, conducted a little business and then introduced Caroline Jackson from Broughton. The title for her demonstration was “Affinity”.

Caroline is a member of the National Association of Flower Arranging Societies and promoted the enjoyment to be had from flowers and flower arranging throughout her demonstration. She explained her demonstration was named Affinity because as a beginner several people had commented that she had a natural affinity with flowers. This became obvious to her audience.

Her first arrangement “Spring” was made using conifer and ivy for some of the foliage and then she added two long sprigs of mimosa and made a third into shorter branches. Groups of daffodils and yellow tulips were inserted next before several deep blue hyacinths and finally hellebore. Caroline made a stunning arrangement so easily.

Her second arrangement was created around a cylinder of copper mesh with hop stalks woven through the base. Next she inserted more ivy and conifer and tree fern, a new material to some members. The flowers incorporated “snowball”, alstroemeria and then carefully threaded through the mesh were seven pretty peach coloured old fashioned roses. Finally into some of the remaining spaces Caroline placed white chrysanthemums. So a second arrangement very different from the first.

Another totally different arrangement was created using tropical leaves and only four tropical flowers. These were three dark red “ginger” flowers and a fourth unknown round flower, definitely not British! Caroline told her audience about the World Flower Show which is to be held in Barbados. She also told us of her own unusual experience of the island and the enjoyment she had had there.

A large mesh urn had oasis secured on top to hold the next arrangement. Caroline threaded long branches of winter jasmine and asparagus fern from the top down into the sides of the container. Into the begonia and ivy leaf foliage she inserted pale champagne pink roses and Vivardia and a similar coloured aruncula before adding small purple clematis and concluded with more loops of jasmine stems.

For her fifth arrangement Caroline had secured a piece of oasis in the centre of a disused firescreen. To the oasis was attached an interesting branch of old apple tree. Next some pretty young fatsia leaves and holly provided the foliage into which was then added several deep pink calla lilies. Another stunningly simple arrangement.

Finally Caroline used a large circular dish which appeared to be fixed onto a similar inverted container. Around the base of this arrangement Caroline inserted five tall pieces of pussy willow and covered the oasis with ivy leaves.

Towards the top of the pussy willow she wrapped a tie and then in between the branches were inserted nerines tall and dainty white flower. Dill and viburnum and white veronica, aruncula and a very pale green anthurium filled the spaces between the pussy willow branches and finally more dainty purple clematis provided a stunning conclusion to the demonstration.

Caroline gave an educational commentary throughout the evening and her affinity with flowers was quite obvious.

She promoted the pleasure flowers can give and encouraged all to feel confident in “having a go”. Ann Everett gave the vote of thanks before seven lucky raffle prize winners collected their spoils.

‘Skipathon’ Report – St Martin’s Primary School On Monday 2nd March 2015, classes would normally be learning French but when the teacher took the register half the class were absent…

The children were invited to the first ever ‘Get Going’ campaign, (an organisation to get children in primary schools enthusiastic in sports) - It was a skipping tournament at The Pods in Scunthorpe.

The children were very nervous at first, but soon felt welcome by Natalie, the representative who told them what they were going to do and guided them to their different stations.

At first, however, a few of the different schools presented their unique routines to a hall of expecting eyes glaring at them. After all of the activities were over, the adults running the event presented medals, in different categories. St Martins was lucky enough to win four medals. You can see a picture of the winners below (Ryan, Hannah, Natalie and Keisha).

We asked the winners how they felt, one commented, “I felt proud, overjoyed and most of all surprised as it was the first medal I’d ever won!” Over all it was an amazing experience for all who attended!

GRIM & GRISLY TALES FROM WEST BUTTERWICK C OF E PRIMARY SCHOOL Year 5 and 6 have been learning to write ghost stories. We used Dickens’s ‘A Christmas Carol’ for our ideas. The children had to choose a child or teacher as the main character. They had to be mean and despised (like Scrooge). By the end of our stories the characters had learnt their lesson and were ‘perfect’ pupils or teachers. These are the beginnings of some of our stories. We hope we ‘scare’ you…

THE GRISLEY TALE!

Dave, once again, was in detention after school muttering a curse under his foul breath. Dave was told by the, “Go away I’ve had enough of you. I’ll deal with you tomorrow!” She sighed heavily, “Will you ever learn?”

“Nah!” sniggered Dave and jumped up, grabbed his bag then sprinted out the school. Once out of the gates, he jumped with joy, then spat at the sight of school.

Dave took a short cut through ‘THE HOUSE OF DEATH’ (The House of Death is the graveyard) instead of the normal way home. After he had sauntered through THE HOUSE OF DEATH he passed the ancient (abandoned) church. Suddenly the hairs on the back of his neck stood on end. Dave rotated 180 degrees and saw a GROTESQUE SHADOW (or thing, maybe someone).

Jamie Harris GHOST STORY It was half past seven at night, it was pitched black; there were only three people left at school, well two not including the evil demon that had haunted it for centuries. Bob and Jeff had just left school, when strange things started to happen. The two boys walked through the dim-lit graveyard; the trees grumbled and groaned as the howling wind leaked through their branches like water running in a crevice.

“4 hours detention!” exclaimed Bob. “New record” added Jeff. They walked in silence. After that the graves started to freeze over as they came to the end of the narrow path.

As they climbed the steps out of the graveyard, circles of black ice formed around their feet.

“What were you thinking?” shouted Mrs Battle Axe (she wasn’t really called that, the children just made that name up as she was so nasty).

“I don’t know,” sobbed Jane. “She was annoying me.” Jane was going through a hard time, as her parents were away for a while.

“It doesn’t mean you have to hit her. You can go now, I’ll deal with you tomorrow!” shouted Mrs Battle Axe. Jane was limping home (trying to make people feel sorry for her) but then she suddenly stopped as she thought she heard something. She looked around but there was no one there so she carried on.

Just then, the church bell started to ring; strangely it stopped after seven dongs… (It was nine o’ clock).

“Boo!” screeched Vanessa and then began giggling. Jane jumped with fright. “Do you want me to walk you home?” asked Vanessa. (Vanessa was a girl from her class who Jane was always nasty to, but despite this, Vanessa tried to be best-friends). Jane gave her an evil glare and as per usual yelled, “NO, go away!” and then barged past her.

Live fast, Drive young As a young driver, shopping for car insurance can be a stressful task – you’re likely to be faced with many unaffordable insurance quotes. Use comparison sites to shop around, and consider having a telematics box fitted to bring your premiums down. Further driver training will also bring costs down.

- As part of learning to drive, it’s likely that you will have been taught how to do basic checks on your vehicle – tyre tread and pressure, fluid levels, lights, and mirrors and windows. It’s important that you spend a few minutes each week doing each of these checks in order to avoid a breakdown and drive safely.

- The law states that you are allowed up to 80mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood before you are over the drink-drive limit. However, it’s impossible to judge how much you can drink and still be under the limit, so make it none for the road. And beware the morning-after effect – there may still be enough alcohol in your system to land you with a conviction for drink-driving.

- It’s inevitable that once you pass your test you’ll be expected to taxi about groups of your friends. But passengers are known to be one of the greatest and most disruptive incar distractions. Make sure you keep your concentration on the road, rather than on those in the passenger seats.

- Learner drivers are currently not allowed on the motorway. This means that once they pass, they are faced with the often-daunting task of driving on high-speed, unfamiliar roads.

But there is no need to be anxious – motorways are statistically our safest roads, and the skills you learned to pass your test will equip you to take them on. Remember to check your mirrors more regularly and leave a minimum two second gap between yourself and the car in front.

There are many new challenges that come alongside the sense of freedom you get once passing your test and being entrusted to drive solo.

“It’s important that young drivers don’t see the removal of the L-plates as the end of their driving development. Skill and knowledge come with experience. But while you’re still building this, further training is the best way to develop skills in areas which you lack confidence in. And the fact that this will bring down your insurance premiums is an added bonus!”
