Epworth Old Rectory Reopens New season for visitors

The Grade 1 listed building is known throughout the world as the childhood home of John and Charles Wesley, who formed a movement that went on to become the international Methodist Church.

All visitors receive a guided tour with trained guides will explaining the history of the building and the inspiration of the Wesley family who used to live there.

The Old Rectory is an accredited museum and underway is a development project to restore the house to how it would have looked when it was occupied by the Wesley family in the early 1700’s.

On Saturday 5th April 10 am to 12 noon - St Andrews Church, Epworth is holding a Schools Open Event. Pupils from schools in the Isle who were involved in the heritage tile project, the production of an animated film and the Activity Day are being invited to come along and see their completed work. Schools are The South Axholme Academy and the Wroot Travis Primary. Schools will be awarded certificates on the day. Light refreshments available.

The Neighbourhood Team continue to carry out patrols in the area.

UPDATE: There has been a big improvement in calls for service here and as such this has now been removed as a Neighbourhood Policing Priority. However it is believed this problem has now moved into the Steal Goose Lane, Belton area, therefore this area is now the Policing Priority so will be monitored and patrolled. As a result of patrols and information received from the public we attended this location and have seized a bike in this same area due to it not having the appropriate documentation required and the driver has also been dealt with accordingly.

Information Burglaries - There has been an increase in Burglaries across the Isle, so Please ensure you keep your home secure at all times locking windows and doors. Also keep keys and expensive items out of sight and consider security lighting around the outside of your property and light timers inside your property. If you are going to be away for any length of time, let your neighbours know so they can also keep an eye on your property. And if you see anything suspicious or anything of concern Please contact the Police.

Poaching - The countryside may look peaceful and idyllic but farmers/landowners still have the problem of poaching which Humberside Police take seriously. Poaching is the illegal trapping of game or fish on private or public land. In order to capture people poaching the police helicopter has been used to film them in action. The footage can be used to trace the vehicles involved as well as to identify those involved and the dogs.

We continue to liaise with farmers/landowners regarding any problems that they encounter and to identify where offences and offenders are committing these acts. Due to the lighter nights and improving weather, calls for this will be on the increase, so Please if anyone sees anything of concern report it on 101.

The Isle of Axholme Lions are thrilled to announce that the main speaker at their Charter Dinner in early April is Rosie Swale-Pope MBE, the only person ever to have run right around the world, unsupported. Lion President, Peter Lindley, said “We are very privileged indeed to have Rosie as our guest speaker. She ran more than 20,000 miles around the world and towed everything she needed on a sledge or wheeled cart. The epic run took her nearly five years and she faced numerous dangers, not least temperatures down to minus 50 degrees Celsius, in places like Siberia and Alaska.”

The Charter Dinner is to be held in Haxey Memorial Hall on Saturday 5 April at 7.30, with the bar opening at 7.00. Music later in the evening is by Gary Thomas, a talented guitarist and singer, who gets everybody up on the dance floor with his broad 60s and 70s repertoire. The menu includes choices for all 3 courses plus coffee and mints.

Dress is either lounge suits or formal.

Members were informed of local celebrations to mark the handover of the W.I. baton travelling the country in the national celebration of the Centenary of the W.I. and also of forthcoming events in the federation.

The evening's speaker, Howard Goodenough, was then introduced and he gave a very informative talk about investment. He and his audience interacted very pleasantly and as a parting comment Howard offered to visit again and give a more detailed talk about specific investments.

At the end of the evening Gill Bradley thanked Howard and members left feeling they had a little more knowledge of the financial world.

The next meeting will be held in the small room at Epworth Imperial Hall at 7.30p.m. on Tuesday, 8th April when the talk will be given by a representative of the Alzheimer Association.

It was also commented on the fact that the group is reaching its tenth birthday and interest was shown in some form of celebration.

MEAT LOAF Page 29 Half pound minced beef Half pound sausage meat 3 tablespoons stuffing mix (of your choice) Seasoning to taste 1 finely chopped onion or 2 tablespoons chopped tomato puree 1 large egg METHOD Mix all ingredients all together and either steam in a covered basin or place in loaf tin for one and half hours. Gas mark 5 (375 F). Serve hot or cold.

Stockshill, and All Saints' Church Belton, circa 1967. Epworth residents, Terry & Margaret Holborn were both named after their parents. My thanks to Epworth resident Terry for the picture above and information. His sister Margaret we know well, from the charming 'Wishing Well' card shop in Church Street, Epworth. Their grandparents Jack & Nora Holborn, lived in the end cottage with the Humber motor car outside. Nora was a postwoman at the Grey Green office for at least ten-years. Next door there used to be a small shop. Another shop trading close by was Shaplands, it was below the end cottage just out of picture left. Below picture taken on 25 October 2013, we see the church almost obscured by a tree, a new lamp is in place and the houses are most attractively brightly decorated.

Haxey and District Bowls Club Have you ever thought of playing Lawn Bowls? Why not give it a try?

So what is lawn bowls? It is played outdoors on a green and is suitable for all participants of all ages, genders and capabilities. People take up bowls to keep themselves fit and active. It is a game of skill, but also lots of fun and a great way to exercise and make friends Well now is the time to start. It takes seconds to learn but a lifetime to master.

If you would like to try your hand, whether you are an experienced bowler looking for a new club - returning to the game after a break – just moved to the area and need to make new friends or just want to try your hand. Challenge yourself and join our Bowls Club.

We offer a full bowls experience where you can have friendly roll ups or have the opportunity to play competitively in league matches.

Bowls requires little equipment – a set of matching woods; a pair of flat, smooth shoes; a jack; and a mat – these are available free or on loan from the Club. If you have never bowled before coaching is available from our members.

Birdline Parrot-Rescue was founded in 1992, initially to rescue and care for birds in the Warwickshire area.

Foster Story

Georgie, a Congo African grey parrot, was handed into Birdline when her owner passed away. She had spent her whole life -30 years- with the same owner. When she was handed in Georgie had only 3 perches and a mirror in her cage. She was in A network of helpers and area co-ordinators, all of who VERY poor condition. In the last article I looked at how to ensure the health of your apple trees.

When you read this article Spring will well and truly have sprung. Your fruit trees should be in blossom and you will be able to see the results of previous years' work with the secateurs.

If you look at your apple trees and those in other gardens you will doubtless notice that they are not all flowering at the same time. There is a system for classifying the time in the Spring when fruit trees are in blossom and are ready to be pollinated. There are five such groups. As a general rule of thumb you need your apple tree to be in the same group as its pollinator or at least next to a neighbouring group. For instance if yours is in group 3 the pollinator also needs to be in that group or in group 2 or 4. If you have several trees you will probably be able to spread the period of pollination across all five groups.

Once you have planted a tree it is too late to change the pollinator or group of that tree, but you can help it by planting another tree in the correct group – or encouraging a neighbour to do so. If you are thinking of planting apple tree it is worth looking at the varieties of other trees in your own garden or those of your neighbours and choosing the variety according to the pollinated group you need.

I advise you to have a look at the blossom on your tree. You should be able to notice where you have blossom: on spurs; the tips of short shoots in blossom; and from any fruiting buds along the wood that is over 12 months old. By doing this you can see the effect of your pruning and can notice what would happen if you took out all of the new growth – in other words you would lose blossom and potential fruit on spur systems, short shoots and along slightly older wood. However, if you have been very ruthless with your pruning over the winter don't worry – there is always another year when you can take a slightly different approach to your pruning regime.

In the next article I will be having a look at how you can control some of the summer pests and diseases on your trees. Meanwhile, enjoy the beautiful view of your trees in blossom.

Camera Club Competition Report The chairman of Axholme Camera Club found himself a very difficult job on the Wednesday night, let me explain why. The meeting on 5th March was taken up with a print competition and Geoff Trinder our chairman had the duty of Judging them. Now Judging is not an easy obligation at the best of times, but when you accept the responsibility of doing it at your own club that makes it a near impossible duty.

However, Geoff has a great deal of experience in the field of Natural History, which just happened to be the subject for this competition. Not only is Geoff the chairman of the camera club he is also the chairman and a long time member of the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust. So he is very well positioned to comment on this very wide subject. Plus, Geoff has been photographing insects, flowers and wildlife subjects for a great many years, even so he still had a very challenging evening picking out the top images.

There was a wide variety of Natural History subjects including snakes, bees, birds, field mice, flowers, fungi and the list goes on, giving the members present a very entertaining evening. The quality of the images was high and Geoff's comments reflected this as he attempted to find the ones deserving the higher marks. Well done to all those who entered photographs and congratulations to those who received the top wards.

At their first meeting of the Epworth and District Flower Club since the Club's A.G.M. members of the society eagerly anticipated a demonstration only to be disappointed and puzzled by the late cancellation of the demonstrator. However, after informing members of business items which included a letter of thanks for a donation to the Haxey Methodist Church and forthcoming events, members enjoyed a practical quiz.

Debbie Beecher (chairman) and Carolyn Drury (programme secretary) had called on the support, knowledge and practical help of three or four group members and together they exhibited 49 examples of plant materials. Members, divided into teams, were to be seen and heard delving deep into their knowledge of many Latin names of these. There was much merriment in evidence especially as common names were not always acceptable!

During the activity members enjoyed delicious home made refreshments and finally settled down to the serious business of answers. One team won fairly and squarely and were rewarded with a plant each as a prize. Two more prizes were shared between the members of the team which unfortunately had the lowest score.

Also produced at short notice were 8 prettily decorated pots of Tate a Tate daffodils as raffle prizes. For all of this last minute support and assistance thanks were expressed.

It had resulted in a very pleasant evening.

Members were asked to commit to the workshop at the May meeting in order for the demonstrator Sarah Atwell, to make sufficient materials available.

The next meeting, on Tuesday, 14th April will be a demonstration

by Rachel Poole and there will also be a bring and buy table for plants and related items. It will be at the usual venue ,the Stephen Jones Community Hall at 7.30pm. .

West Butterwick Church of England Primary School (Part of the Trentside Federation) – School News On Tuesday 25 February, six children from Year One to Year Four spent the morning at South Axholme Academy. They took part in the Future Stars project for Physical Education. There were two activities; gymnastics and developing ball skills. All the children enjoyed the experience and are looking forward to their next session in April! This is able to take place because of the new funding provided by the Government to encourage and develop children in engaging in active sports, better helping them to reach their potential (Schools’ Sports Premium).

On Wednesday 26 February, we had a talk in school informing us of a new project to encourage children to find more ‘active’ ways of travelling to and from school instead of using a car, such as walking and cycling. Already, the vast majority of our pupils walk to school which is great to know. There was some interesting thinking that came out of this visit/project :The Infant children had to decide on the best way to travel and the reasons why. The children then proceeded to take part in the making of a ‘walking bus’ around the playground! The Junior pupils were also full of good ideas – Their thinking led on to them participating in a mapping activity so that they could work out how far they live from the school. Some good Geography and Maths skills being practised there! The message of ‘Healthy Eating’ (Five-a-Day) and having at least one hour’s exercise per day was also emphasised. A worthwhile afternoon and something we would recommend for all schools to do!!

Further to all of the learning linked to the National Curriculum, we are busily preparing for our Easter Service on Wednesday 4th April. Before this, we have a number of pupils participating in the Family Service on Sunday 23rd March. Our ‘Lighting the Candle Group’ will be delivering its next Community Worship on Friday 9th May – the theme is ‘Follow the Right Path/Forgiveness’, to be considered through the story of Noah. Exam season is fast approaching and all year 11 students are sure to be well into their revision schedules. With exams starting after the Easter holidays make sure you are prepared in order to reach and exceed your personal goals that you aspire to.

Exams and revision can be stressful however; here are some handy top tips that will help you to revise more successfully: Create a time table for your revision schedule and stick to it! This can make a heavy workload seem manageable!

Organise your study space in order to get into the mind set for revision Use flow charts and diagrams in order to see what you know and what you have to still lear Practice on old exam papers in order to improve your ability to answer exam style questions Take regular breaks to keep yourself concentrated and alert It is important to allocate yourself time to revise and try to mix up your subjects to avoid boredom.

Also establish a revision technique that works for you and use it! If you follow these tips then you are sure to fly through your exams, keep stress at bay, and get the best possible results. Good luck to everyone in year 11 and try not to panic!

IN THE PUBLIC EYE Over the course of the last few weeks my e mail inbox has had two bursts of frenetic activity. They have both been due to one thing—the appearance on two different B.B.C. programmes of a Sunday school banner, in respect of Westwoodside.

Some two years ago the Westwoodside Methodist church council decided that the most appropriate thing to do with their Sunday School banner (dating from the 1920s) was to donate it to the museum of Primitive Methodism at Englesea Brook, near Crewe. There it could be properly conserved and cared for. In a BBC Songs of Praise programme during February featuring the work of Sunday Schools (filmed at Englesea Brook) of the five hundred banners they have, the Westwoodside banner made an appearance. Then in a B.B.C. Antiques Road Trip programme at the end of the month, the antiques experts visited Englesea Brook, and that familiar word ‘Westwoodside’ was again seen on a bright blue banner.

E’ mails sent to me asked if this was our village of Westwoodside, or how many places are there called by that name, and also how reassuring it was to know that the banner had not been filed away and forgotten, but was seen more clearly than it had been for many years. These e’mails were from local people and some far away in the rest of the country.

It reminds us how our history forms us into the people that we are, and how we also live in a very interconnected community. And all this from a now redundant Sunday school banner. I hope too that many of the Arrow readers saw the banner on the two programmes.

Dear Readers, Standards of alignment for motorways.

On motorways there are curves not bends. Due to the higher speed that traffic travels on motorways, compared with other types of road, it is essential that a driver has good view of the road ahead. It should be understood that ‘sight distance’ is the clear distance over which a driver, entering a curve, is able to see an obstruction from an assumed eye level of 3ft 6in above the surface of the road, (you sat in your car).

The minimum sight distance required along motorways 295m (950ft) in both vertical and horizontal planes. This sight distance is equivalent to the minimum stopping distance for a speed of 70mph while travelling round a curve, if there was an obstruction ahead.

A vehicle travelling at 70mph would cover that distance of 950ft in 9seconds.

National speed limits.

Our speed limits on motorways are actually temporary speed limits which must be renewed every 18 months this is achieved by statutory instrument 15/78.

The limits are specified under The 70mph 60mph 50mph (temporary Speed Limit Order 1977) Crawler Lanes.

On motorways the normal maximum longitudinal gradient in rural areas is 3% (1 in 33) in hilly country a 4% (1 in 25) gradient may exist, when a (1 in 33) gradient could not reasonably be achieved because of the cost of deep excavations and other factors involved. The relative speed differential between classes of vehicles going up a gradient can vary considerably.

To minimise the danger of rear-end shunts between fast and slow moving vehicles, an additional motorway lane is provide on the nearside, called a `crawler lane’.

Service areas.

When motorways were first being built and service areas were being planed a question was asked how far apart to put them on the motorway, the general opinion was that a car in those days could travel a distance of approximately 30miles on one gallon of petrol. That’s why service areas are all about 30miles apart.

Road Signs.

The Romans were the first to erect distance markers along roads called milliaries.

A law passed in1648 required each parish in England to erect guideposts at crossroads.

But why is the stop sign shaped like a fifty pence piece?

Why is the give way sign an inverted triangle?

Answer.

If they are covered in snow or traffic dirt you can still tell what they are by the shape!
