Crowle Methodist Church continue with their programme of events; on Monday 15th October at 7pm there will be a Harvest Supper and songs by Gemma Woods. Tickets £6.

Isle Group of the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust News- On Thursday

4th October 2012 our indoor meetings get underway with an interesting talk on recognition of birds that you can come across when out and about in the Lincolnshire area.

Our guest speaker is Andy Sharpe who is the Voluntary reserve manager at Farr Ings National Nature Reserve where he also runs a local bird group.

We look forward to welcoming all regular members and new visitors.

All our indoor meetings which commence in October are held in the Stephen Jones Hall at the rear of the Methodist Chapel, Low Street, Haxey on the first Thursday of the month at 7.30pm and everyone is welcome, you don’t have to be a member. There is a small admission charge of £1, a raffle and refreshments.

Don’t forget that a good range of competitively priced bird food is always on sale at our indoor meetings or at Geoff’s house in Belton.

The session will run from 10am until 4pm at Crowle Community Hub, High Street, Crowle is part of a programme aimed at spotting treating potential medical problems before symptoms rear their head.

Free NHS Health Checks are offered to members of public aged between 40 and 74 who do not already suffer from conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, heart or kidney disease or have had a stroke.

As well as identifying medical issues before they become a problem, the programme is also helping change lives.

“The free NHS Health Checks aim to help you be better prepared for the future and take vital steps now to maintain or improve your health,” explains Victoria Grainger, Community Public Health Improvement Facilitator for The Isle of Axholme.

“Lifestyle factors that contribute to conditions such as coronary heart disease, stroke or diabetes include smoking, obesity, binge drinking, unhealthy eating and an inactive lifestyle. There is a lot you can do to lessen your chances of developing them as you get older.”

The checks are carried out in the community with venues ranging from local libraries to leisure centres, fairs and events to your own place of work. During the Health Check, an individual’s risk of developing heart disease and some other serious conditions within the next 10 years is calculated and a tailored preventative action plan with a Health Trainer drawn up.

There have been more than 1540 health checks performed in North Lincolnshire since October 2010 and the team have identified people with high blood pressure, high cholesterol and pre diabetes risk as well as high risks of developing heart disease. Many of these people had no clue their health was even at risk before having their health check.

These sessions run from 10am to 4pm. They are on a drop-in basis, so a short wait may be required. New dates are being added all the time.

Isle of Axholme – North Ward Priorities**for full details go to the Humberside Police web page** Market Place and Potts Lane, Crowle-Anti-Social Behaviour PC1717 PCSO 7889 PCSO 7576 and Criminal Damage to Property. During August there have Graham Godley Wendy Frear Paul Fearon been five calls for service for the Market Place and one for Potts Lane. The incidents in the Market place related to noise during a verbal argument amongst family members, an assault where the offender was arrested, two calls regarding possible traffic offences being committed and one regarding a vehicle causing an obstruction, stopping a market stall being erected. The incident at Potts Lane concerned noise generated from three parked vehicle playing music in the car park. A Police patrol did attend and speak to the drivers making them aware of the complaint, warning them of their anti-social behaviour and moving them on from the car park.

At the Neighbourhood Action Team meeting held at Keadby on 21 st August 2012, Town Councillor Ron Stewart informed members that the Market Place and Church Street in Crowle had been quieter over the past two months and anti-social behaviour seemed to have been significantly reduced. The Neighbourhood Team include the area on the regular patrol matrix and stop and check any vehicles and persons in the area. Often groups are spoken to in the Market Place but are not committing any offences and so the Police have no powers to move them on from the public area. Any offences which are revealed are dealt with positively.

Windsor Park and Godnow Road, Crowle. Anti-social behaviour and youths congregating and causing a nuisance to local residents. During August there have been five calls relating to incidents on Godnow Road.

Two of these relate to Windsor Park Playing Field, complaining of noise and litter generated by cars and youths attending in the car park late at night. The other calls relate to two regarding information about persons wanted for crime and one regarding a minor assault by a juvenile where the parents of the injured party wanted the offender speaking to and warning regarding his future conduct. Tracey COYNE of North Lincolnshire Council Safer Neighbourhoods is to conduct a survey with residents on Godnow Road to evaluate the extent of the perceived problems. Safer Neighbourhoods, the Police and other partner agencies have been encouraging young people to use the facilities at Windsor Park in order to prevent groups of bored youths wandering or congregating around the town centre area.

The playing field committee are considering having gates erected across the entrance and exit to the car parking area. Extra police patrols are being made in the area with a view to identifying those concerned and taking positive action against them if any offences are identified. Residents who experience any ASB problems are asked to report the matter at the time it is occurring so that a police patrol can attend and deal with the matter promptly. The non emergency telephone number for Humberside Police is 101.

TRAFFIC OFFENCES = A male at North Lincolnshire Magistrates Court and was found guilty of the offence of failing to provide a specimen of breath for analysis. He was fined four hundred pounds and ordered to pay court costs of two hundred pounds. He was also banned from driving for sixteen months. HARASSMENT = A female from Eastoft has been given a harassment warning following her course of conduct towards other residents in the area. ASSAULT = Two persons were arrested in Crowle regarding counter complaints of assault. BREACH OF MOLESTATION ORDER = A male from Scunthorpe has been arrested regarding his breaching a non molestation order and has been released on Police bail whilst further forensic tests are being made.

The Axholme Academy Paralympics Trip On Friday 7th September 2012, 49 students and 4 staff members from The Axholme Academy travelled down to Stratford for a once in a lifetime trip to watch the Paralympics Games. The trip had been organised months ago by Miss Downs, with the places being taken up the day after the letter had been given out with our students being particularly keen to get involved.

We really wish we could have taken everyone as many wanted to go!

Our journey started at 6:30am from school so that we could get down to London to see as much of the action as possible. We arrived at the Olympic Park at 11am and proceeded to walk from one end to the other, which took about 30 minutes. Students and staff were amazed at the facilities and venues, stopping to take photos throughout the park. We arrived at Eton Manor, the venue for Wheelchair Tennis just in time to watch the Women’s Singles Gold Medal Match. We were lucky enough to watch the Dutch player Esther Vergeer win her match to take Gold, she’s won over 400 games in a row and is unbeaten in almost a decade! We stayed and watched the victory ceremony and then was able to watch the first set of the Women’s Doubles Bronze Medal Match, where Great Britain were represented.

At about 2:30pm we headed over to the Riverbank Arena where 7-a-side Football for athletes with Cerebral Palsy was being played. We watched the Semi-Final match between Russia and Brazil. It was a game full of goals and our students were amazed with the sheer skill of the athletes involved.

We had a short amount of time where we were able to take photos of our students in front of the Olympic stadium where they practised their Usain Bolt and ‘Mo-bot’ poses, after which we raced to the Basketball Arena at 5:00pm in order to watch Wheelchair Rugby or ‘Murderball’. We watched an amazing match between USA and France and were thoroughly entertained. Afterwards some of our students managed to have their photos taken with GB Wheelchair Rugby star Ross Morrison. The school (@AxholmeAcademy) tweeted him the picture and he tweeted back saying it was a pleasure to meet our students and he’s now following us back!

We had our final journey through the park, stopping for a few last photos before we got back on the bus at 8:00pm and headed back to school, arriving just before midnight!

All of our students and staff had an absolutely amazing day loving every minute of it, we will treasure the memories forever!!

Skipping For Life at Althorpe & Keadby Primary School Althorpe and Keadby Primary School enjoyed a full day of skipping on Friday, 7th September as part of Skip For Life.

Sports Development Officers Alex and Liz came along with Phizzy the Fox, the PE mascot for North Lincolnshire.

Alex gave an assembly on the benefits of exercise and keeping fit and then some of us had a go in front of the whole school. After then, each class had the opportunity to practice skipping for 30 minutes. It was very tiring and some of us found it extremely tricky, however, we all kept trying and worked up a sweat!

Our final challenge was to see how many skips we could do in two minutes: this ranged from 3 to 207 across the whole school.

Our school challenge is to now keep skipping together every day from 10.40 to 104.5am so that, when Alex returns next month, we will all be able to do many more skips in two minutes.

Mrs Lovatt was awesome Mrs Tate was steady and the children who volunteered, including Eddie, Bradley and Tiarni, were brilliant!

Axholme Camera Club News The first meeting of the new season was on Wednesday the 5th September, the Chairman - Geoff Trinder opened proceedings with a very sad announcement. One of our long serving honorary members, Mr John Roberts passed away early morning of the 30th August 2012. A one minutes silence was held in order to remember John's contributions to Haxey community and the Camera Club.

John had been fighting heart problems and had recently undergone two operations. He was a very active Methodist and would regularly conduct the services at the Methodist Church in Haxey, he was a very committed fund raiser and organised photographic slide shows throughout the year to assist in the funding of the church. In his working life John was an Engineer with the NCB with the responsibilities for the Coal Washing Plants in Yorkshire. It goes without saying that John will be sadly missed, our thoughts and best wishes are with his wife Betty, and his family at this most distressing time.

The remainder of the evening was taken up with discussions on the planned programme and the development of our new web-site. The 2012-13 program has the usual competitions plus a very good selection of highly experienced photography speakers with confirmed dates through the year. The Club's Web-site organiser, Simon Knight spent sometime explaining the ins and outs of what he was trying to establish in order to offer the members a better and more friendly web site.

The Cardinal Sin Last time I wrote in this excellent publication Arrow, I committed the cardinal sin of writing about my family. My youngest son was approached by several people, commiserating with him about what his Dad had written. I apologise to him profusely. Suffice it to say that since then he has enjoyed a few days holiday, been for a day to the Paralympics in London with a brother, has been sent work by his University and is now working through a booklist.

He is away for several weeks and will miss out at St Oswald’s Church Althorpe with Keadby on our Harvest Festival (7th October at 1.30pm), All Saints Sunday (4th November at 10am) and Remembrance Sunday (11th November at 3pm). It’s that time of year when there is a ‘special’ Sunday virtually every week, especially when you take baptisms into account! It’s just as well the Games are over so as not to detract the Rector from his work!

So why not come to ‘A Church Near You’ for a special service in this season of special services. In particular, as you look around at creation in this Harvest season, let God shout out to you not in criticism, but in warm affection.

The Ugly Tree

Long, long ago, in a dense forest there were thousands of tall and beautiful trees. They were happy, but proud of themselves. Among them there also an ugly tree whose branches were badly twisted. Its roots had uneven curves. All the trees made fun of that ugly tree.

“How are you, hunchback?” the other trees always shouted and their laughter made the ugly tree feel sad. But, he never raised a voice against them. The ugly tree thought, “I wish I were as beautiful as the other trees. Why did God do this to me? Neither can I provide shade to the travellers not can the birds make their nests on me. Nobody needs me.”

One day, a woodcutter came to the forest. He took a look at the trees and said, “These trees are lovely. I must cut them.” As soon as he picked up his axe the trees became frightened.

‘Chop, Chop, Chop’ went the woodcutter’s axe and one by one the trees started to fall.

“None of us is going to be spared,” screamed one of the beautiful trees. Soon that tree too was brought to ground by the woodcutter’s axe.

By now, the woodcutter had come near to the ugly tree. He had just raised his axe when suddenly he noticed how crooked the ugly tree was. “Hmm! This crooked tree seems to be useless for me. I cannot make long straight logs of this ugly tree,” he thought. And he moved towards another beautiful tree. The ugly tree heaved a huge sigh of relief.

The new name for Doncaster College for the Deaf.

The college, formerly known as Doncaster College for the Deaf has changed its name to reflect the diverse range of learners it attracts from across the region.

Graded ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted in May 2012 for its Social Care provision, Alan Robinson, Executive Principal of the college said, “Our education provision has diversified over the years and we have decided to change the name of our college to reflect this. The name Communication Specialist College - Doncaster strongly emphasises what the organisation is about in 2012 and moving forward”.

The college can meet the educational, training and support needs of individuals who are Deaf, hearing impaired and those with specialist communication needs, including Autism, Aspergers and learning disabilities or difficulties.

Doncaster Advanced Motorists Driving at Night Dear readers, The fundamental rule of Advanced Driving – you must be able to stop within the distance you can see to be clear - this applies equally when driving at night.

Away from street lighting, your vision will be limited to the range of your headlights and this varies massively between dipped and full-beam. Therefore, it makes sense that you slow down when you’re driving on dipped headlights. If you find your speed creeping up, remind yourself how dangerous it would be if you suddenly came across, a tyre carcass, a pedestrian, a stray animal or even a pallet off an HGV in your headlight beam, could you STOP! If your headlights illuminate 40 meters ahead, you’ll have just 1.5 seconds to react and stop at 60mph!

Realistically, you’ll still be travelling at 40mph when you hit the obstruction!!

Drive on full beam whenever possible but always think about other road users. Dip your lights as late as you possibly can, ensuring that you do not dazzle anyone and remembering that, at night, your lights give other road users the earliest warning of your presence. Clean your lights regularly as road grime quickly reduces their effectiveness and the distance you can see ahead clearly.

If an approaching car forgets to dip, glance immediately towards the side of the road to avoid being temporarily blinded. On dual carriageways at 70mph you cover 31 metres (about 7 car lengths) per second, so even if it takes only five seconds for your vision to clear fully you’ll have covered a distance equivalent to one and a half football pitches!

Advanced drivers know that driving in the dark isn’t all danger and drawbacks.

Empty night-time roads make journeys quicker and less stressful: car headlights give early warning of their presence and the skilled driver can even use other vehicles headlight beams to work out where the road goes next.

Don’t be complacent though, speed is more difficult to judge in the dark – especially approach speeds – so you should still take care and adhere to all the daylight driving rules.

Dazzle from following vehicles can be just as blinding but the effect can usually be “minimised” using the dipping function on your interior mirror, which is now standard on most modern cars.

Don’t forget to return the mirror to its “normal position” once the dazzle has subsided With practice, avoidance technique becomes habit.

While such careless driving can be irritating, never stay on full-beam yourself to retaliate.
