Carl and his brother-in-law Richard Owen are taking part in a Coast to Coast cycle challenge, from Morecambe to Bridlington, on Friday 14th and Saturday 15th October, in aid of the Lindsey Lodge Hospice at Scunthorpe and Myeloma Uk. Both these charities are very close to our hearts, as our Mum has just recently lost her battle with Myeloma (cancer of the bone marrow) and received excellent care at the Lindsey Lodge Hospice.

We have set up a just giving web page for any online donations at www.justgiving.com/teams/2011coast2coast, and we are hoping to raise £2,000.

Myeloma, also known as multiple myeloma, is a type of cancer arising from plasma cells which are found in the bone marrow.

Bone marrow is the ‗spongy‘ material found in the bones that produces blood cells i.e. white cells, red cells and platelets Plasma cells form part of your immune system Normal plasma cells produce antibodies (also called immunoglobulins) to help fight infection. In myeloma, malignant plasma cells (myeloma cells) in the bone marrow produce large amounts of an abnormal antibody known as paraprotein. Unlike normal antibodies, paraprotein lacks the capacity to fight infection and has no useful function.

It is often through the measurement of this paraprotein that myeloma is diagnosed and monitored.

AXHOLME NORTH POLICE REPORT Potts Lane Car park and St Oswalds Church Grounds, Church Street, Crowle - Anti-social behaviour and vehicle nuisance in the car park and youths congregating and causing a nuisance to local residents at the church.

Update :- Temporary CCTV has been installed at Potts Lane Car Park and has had an extremely positive impact on the calls for service. Last figures show only one call for service relating PCSO 7889 PCSO 7576 PC1717 to Potts Lane Car Park since the camera was installed. The Wendy Frear Paul Fearon Graham Godley caller who was previously one of the most effected by the problems recorded on the log that the CCTV had improved the situation and his quality of life. The success of the camera suggests there is no or little need at this time to close the car park or remove the bench. To avoid simply moving the problems to an alternative location a CCTV camera has been given to a NHW group to be used at the Churchyard and latest feedback is that the cameras and the proactive work of the police at the location have also resulted in an improvement. Several youths have been interviewed regarding damage at the church and four first time offenders have been referred to the Respect Seminar held at Scunthorpe Police Station and Magistrates Court. Work continues to find an alternative, suitable location for the young people to meet. Temporary skate equipment is available for use at Windsor Park and we are currently waiting confirmation of insurance or that the permanent skate park equipment being secured by Crowle Spar Group to be erected. Also a new scheme is starting where any young person found in the church yard will have a letter sent to their parents advising them of the problems being experienced and inform them of the new equipment and ask they encourage their children to meet at Windsor Park.On target football sessions have been moved to Crowle on Friday nights and street sports sessions are also available. There is also a focus on education and a presentation has been planned on Anti Social Behaviour to the whole of North Axholme School on the 12th of September. The Neighbourhood Policing Team frequently patrols the area and the Police Roads Policing Department have also been tasked with patrolling the area and to deal with any traffic offences. Two vehicles have been seized as the drivers had no valid insurance cover for use on public roads and another male driver has been given a warning regarding his manner of driving and any further offence will result in his vehicle being seized.

Millennium Green Park, Edinburgh Road, Keadby – Criminal Damage and Anti-social behaviour by three adult males in drink. This is a new priority set at the last Neighbourhood Action Team Meeting. There have been a number of incidents of damage caused to the park equipment and concerns have again been raised about three known males who visit the area often heavily under the influence of drink. It was discussed at the meeting about an application being made for the Safer Neighbourhoods Temporary CCTV which has proved to be a success in Crowle. The Neighbourhood Policing Team frequently patrols the area and have in the past dealt with the three previously mentioned.

Village of Ealand - Crime in the Village including arson, shed burglaries and vehicle crime.

There has an increase in calls for service regarding the above issues. The Neighbourhood Policing Team will make frequent patrols to this area in order to deal with the issues raised.

Recent issues.

Manner of Driving = A male has been spoken to regarding his manner of driving at Crowle and issued with a warning that should he re-offend during the next twelve months his vehicle will be seized by the police and the offence dealt with by the courts. No Insurance = A male has been reported for summons for driving without valid insurance cover and will be appearing at North Lincolnshire Magistrates Court at Scunthorpe. His vehicle was seized by the Police at the roadside. Drink Driving = A male has been arrested for the offences of drink driving at Keadby and has appeared at North Lincolnshire Magistrates Court where he was given a driving ban and fined for the offence. Criminal Damage = Four juveniles have been referred to the Respect Seminar at Scunthorpe Police Station and Magistrates Court following their admissions in causing damage to property at Crowle.

Walkabout by the Local Neighbourhood Team who will conducting a walkabout in Crowle Town Centre to encourage community engagement on the 3rd October 2011 between 2pm and 3pm.

Adapted by Anthony Catherall AGRICULTURE IN THE 19th CENTURY

Farming has long been the most important single activity in the Isle of Axholme. In the 16 th century the ordinary farmer had 10 cattle, 6 horses, 4 pigs and perhaps 20 sheep. In the 17 th century a substantial yeoman farmed about 25 acres with a „middling‟ peasant having about 7 acres and a poor peasant between 2 and 5 acres. All had common grazing right. The main crops of the 17th century farmer were pulses, barley, wheat, rye, oats, hemp and flax. The holding remained small and indeed many are still small. In the 19th century the Isle had the largest number of smallholdings of any area of Lincolnshire.

The Enclosure Act of 1795 did little to increase the size of smallholdings because it only referred to the commons, not arable land.

Under the Mediaeval system of agriculture, the people paid rents and tithes to the Lord of the manor for their land. The land was divided into small strips (approximately 16 ft. wide 4.92 metres) from three large village fields. The commons were extensive and used by any of the villagers who wished. The commons of Haxey, Epworth and Belton were low-lying lands west of the villages. They were valued at around 10/- or 11/- an acre before enclosure.

In 1795 an Act of Enclosure for the commons of Owston Ferry, Haxey, Epworth and Belton was passed – altogether 12,000 acres. £20,000 was allocated for drainage. Compensation was made for tithes and allotments for Turbaries were taken out. Seven twelfths were divided between owners of “ancient messuages cottagers, tofts and toft steads” in equal shares, and five twelfths were divided between the same owners in proportion to the value of the lands. In Epworth there were 236 claims for 2,285 acres.

The inhabitants resisted an attempt to enclose the arable lands. Thus, of course remnants of the strip fields can still be seen, but as increasing mechanisation on the farm makes them inefficient, voluntary unification over the last 50 years has made them fast disappear. The most obvious remnants of the strip field system can be seen on Eastlound fields between Haxey and Eastlound, south of Burnham and just east of Epworth on the Owston Ferry and Beltoft Roads.

With the Act were appointed Commissioners to organise the division of land. Their powers included supervision of drains and ditches and enforcement of drainage rates including the hiring of a drainage engineer; these powers were retained until 1930 with the Land Drainage Act. Minutes of the meetings from 1795 t0 1930 can be seen in records at the South West Axholme Drainage Board Offices in Epworth.

Agricultural wages were fairly high. Labour was in demand especially at harvest time.

Irishmen in gangs came to help gather the harvest working north up the country as the harvest ripened.

Women and children were recruited into Potato Pickers gangs to help at harvest time. Originally the idea to employ women and children was to provide work so they could supplement their husband‟s earnings. However, the exploitation of the gangs of women and children working for up to sixteen hours a day was not forseen.

However, 1867 legislation all but abolished the system. Wages in 1793 were around 12/- a day in harvest time, but only 3/- a day in pleasenext callmonth...

Emergency Services Rescue Day Saturday 9th July 2011.

I am writing to express my sincere thanks on behalf of the Rescue Day Committee to the members of the public and communities who came along to Rescue Day and or donated money for the charities that this years Rescue Day was raising both awareness and funds for.

In addition our thanks to all in making Rescue Day the outstanding success it was. Feed back we have received to date has been extremely positive from all involved and those who attended, moreover, both exhibitors and members of the public have stated that they had a most informative and enjoyable day.

The main objectives for Rescue Day continues to be to raise safety awareness to members of the public by providing displays such as Water Rescue demonstrations and Road Traffic Collision exercises, along with the delivery of community safety from the Emergency Services, volunteer rescue organisations and safety partnerships.

The day was also able to raise funds for various charities and worthy causes which, given the current economical climate is testament to the public‘s generosity and support to the Emergency Services and the charities concerned.

In addition to the money raised for Help for Heroes by the Help for Heroes team who were present on the day a further £3813:69 was raised by other charities that were also present at Rescue Day. Now all expenses have been paid £15,102:62 has been added to the £3813:69 making a grand total of £18916:31 raised at this years Rescue Day for charities. The Rescue Day committee has unanimously agreed to divide the £15,102:62 as follows: Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire Air Ambulance = £4,600, this is what it costs to keep the Air Ambulance flying for just one day.

RAFA = £1000, this goes towards members of the RAF past and present who suffer injuries or illness throughout out the course of their duties.

Humber Rescue = £3,200, this is to complete their new boat house extension which will reduce their boat mobilisation by 5 minutes.

Belwood Playgroup = £500, this will go towards the purchase of trikes, helmets and Hi visibility tabards for the children.

Doncaster Sub Aqua Club = £1000, this will enable the club to purchase children‘s SCUBA equipment to enable them to teach and provide try dives for children.

Burton Stather Heritage Group = £500, this will go towards their World War 2 Tank ramp restoration project.

Market Place Crowle, £100, towards the upkeep of their market stalls which were kindly donated the Rescue Day. Crowle and Ealand Playing Field Association = £1000, in order to reduce anti-social behaviour in the market place at Crowle, a skate park is being built, the Rescue Day donation will go towards the insurance for the park and assist in the investment in young people and raise their aspirations.

Firefighters Charity = £1000, towards the two centres which rely solely on charitable donations to help in the convalescence of injured firefighters or those who suffer ill health through the course of their duties.

Police Charity = £1000, towards rehabilitation facilities which rely solely on charitable donations to help in the convalescence of injured Police Officers or those who suffer ill health through the course of their duties.

Lindsey Lodge Hospice = £1000, Lindsey Lodge Hospice offers special care for people in the North Lincolnshire area living with life-limiting conditions such as cancer, multiple sclerosis and motor neurone disease.

FODSA = £202:62, This will go towards their charity of choice and which they are carrying out a Fire Engine pull to raise further funds on the 11th of September.

Given the success of Rescue Day 2011 it is sincerely hoped that you will consider rendering your support with next years Rescue Day which takes place on Saturday, July the 14th 2012, once again please accept our sincere thanks and appreciation on behalf of the Rescue Day Committee for your kind donations to the Rescue Day charities for 2011.

SOUTH AXHOLME SHARKS got their new season off to a blistering start last Sunday (28th) when they competed at the Worksop Dolphins Dukeries meet at Ponds Forge in Sheffield.

22 swimmers represented the Isle club and certainly made the big clubs sit up and take notice, taking 6 Gold, 5 Silver, 2 Bronze, 14 medals for 4th-6th place, PLUS 3 Top Girl awards thanks to Tilly Arrand in the 9yrs, Natasha Crow in the 11-12yrs and Jessica Gillatt in the 13-14yrs age group categories. No mean feat amongst tough competition from big city clubs!

Head coach, Rob Crofts, was ecstatic with his teams performance saying, ―I was very proud of how all Sharks swimmers swam.‖ The long course (50m pool) events don‘t come up that often and the whole squad rose to the challenge, making the most of competing in such an awe inspiring venue.

Team spirit poolside was outstanding and coach Rob praised his athletes saying he was ―Very happy how team spirit was strong with the experienced swimmers of all ages helping out those inexperienced swimmers in the Sharks way of racing.....strong and fast!‖ Leading the way was Jessica Gillat (14) claiming gold in 100m Breaststroke & 50m Freestyle, silver in 50m Fly & other medal placings. Natasha Crow (12) won gold in the 50m Fly, 50m Backstroke & silver in 50m Freestyle & other medal places to add to the Sharks tally.

The 9 year olds events saw Katy Braddock win gold in 50m Butterfly & silver in 50m Freestyle with Tilly Arrand taking gold in 50m Backstroke and two 4th place medals.

Other medal winners were Lucy Hame (10), Finleigh Dukes (11), Bridie Smith (15), Lauren Jarvis (11) & Lucy Goodwin (15).

The 10 & under and 14 & under girls relays saw heroic swims from Sharks earning 3 silver & a bronze. A fantastic achievement for both teams who were up against some tough opponents and gave spectators an exciting end to both sessions. Looking at the reaction poolside, no-one enjoyed it more than coach Rob! The entire squad earned personal best times and finished in respectable positions in each age group. A huge well done to Sophie Hame, Ruby Elderkin, Abbie Kerry-Riley, Charlotte Wilson, Lisa Goodwin, Philippa Smith, Amy Jackson, Caragh, Aislinn & Aiofe Chambershey, William Beevor, Madeline Knight & Nicole Dukes.

After such a brilliant start to build on, coach Rob is excited about the 2011/12 season ahead of South Axholme Sharks and is looking forward to getting the training done to make this season one to remember.

Festival of Flowers and Victorian Life Many thanks to those who came to the Festival last month at All Saints Church Belton. Just under 50 individuals prepared the displays and the flowers and acted as stewards or caterers on the day and approximately 1000 people came to visit, some travelling many miles. We are grateful to you all.

After a short pause, we now move into Harvest, Remembrance Sunday and Christmas. I won‘t scare you by mentioning how few shopping days there are until Christmas Day, although I think most children think it‘s light years to go.

Those children will now be used to new schools or new teachers and even those going to University have packed their bags and gone. They will miss out on most of the major festivals mentioned above although I am sure they will be home to collect Christmas presents. Now is the time to remember Jesus said, ―It is more blessed to give than to receive‖!

There is one more major celebration to mention. Rt Rev Christopher Lowson will be ‗enthroned‘ as 72nd Bishop of Lincoln in November. Please pray wit me that God will endow him with gifts of wisdom, leadership and insight. Let‘s hope he finds time to bless the snowploughs this year as did the former Bishop!
