'Isle Knits' is progressing well. because of the way the Tutor, Anne Parkinson doesn't give up on any of her students! No one is made to feel an idiot, she has so much faith in her class members as well as buckets of patience. Before you know it, you are learning the skills to create something both useful and beautiful. There are such a range of projects on the go both knitting and crochet from people of all ages and skills Some ladies even bring their partners. We all help each other and there are some amazing things being produced. Classes are held at Eastoft Village Hall 6.30 pm to 8 pm on the first Wednesday of each month. and also [at a different time] 7 pm to 8. 30 pm at Granny Annies on Crowle High street on the first and third Friday of every month classes are only £1. 50 each session.

Isle Group of the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust News

On Thursday May 3rd at 7.30pm Chris de Feu will be telling us everything there is to know about slugs and people who have already been to this workshop have said that it is very interesting so don’t be put off by the title. To many people slugs are just pests that should be destroyed but perhaps there is another side to them, do they have a purpose? There are several different types of slugs and we are asking those who come along to bring some with them if possible. We look forward to seeing you and your slugs on May 3rd. This is our last indoor meeting before the summer. We restart the indoor programme on October 4th.

There will be a guided walk around Crowle Moors National Nature Reserve on Saturday May 19th.

We will meet at the reserve at 2pm. If you are not sure how to get there you can ring Geoff Trinder on the number below or look on the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust website for information on Crowle Moors. There are brown road signs to follow from the M180. It is advisable to have sensible shoes and insect repellent. The walks are open to anyone so do come along and find out more about this fascinating, unique place. We hope to see you there.

All our indoor meetings are held in the Stephen Jones Hall at the rear of the Methodist Chapel, Low Street, Haxey on the first Thursday of the month at 7.30pm and everyone is welcome, you don’t have to be a member. There is a small admission charge of £1 and there is a raffle and refreshments.

There have been a number of complaints regarding criminal damage to various properties in the Market Place and on Vicars Walk in Crowle. A window and panes of glass in the telephone kiosk PCSO 7576 PCSO 7889 PC1717 in the Market Place have been smashed and Paul Fearon Wendy Frear Graham Godley heading bricks on two garden walls of properties on Vicars Walk have been knocked off. Also there have been two reports of youths throwing stones on Vicars Walk but no damage was found on those two occasions. Suspicious Activity, Ealand It has been brought to the Neighbourhood Policing Team’s attention that youths in vehicles are acting suspicious around the area of Seven Lakes Country Park in Ealand. The Team are to include the area on the regular patrol matrix and to stop and check any vehicles and persons in the area. It is not know at this time if any offences are being committed but hopefully by carrying out the checks, the reasons as to why the youths are in the area will come to light.

Potts Lane Car Park and St Oswalds Church, Crowle.

Anti-social behaviour and vehicle nuisance in the car park and youths congregating and causing a nuisance to local residents at the church. During March there were no calls for service relating to the car park at Potts Lane although there was a call relating to a report of a person driving a vehicle around the Potts Lane area whilst being under the influence of alcohol. There was one call relating to the Church Street area. Youths had been causing a nuisance by banging on a window of a house on Church Walk prior to running off. The Neighbourhood Team did attend but those responsible had left the area. No damage was caused and the Team will continue to patrol the area between dealing with other duties.

Metal and Cable Thefts = There have been a number of calls regarding theft of metal and cable from various locations around the Isle. If you witness anything you believe to be suspicious with persons working on telephone or power lines please telephone the police as soon as possible in order that those involved can be checked and verified that they are there legitimately. .If you have any doubts about anyone collecting scrap in your area, please record any description of the suspects and if possible any vehicle details before reporting the matter to the police. By doing this officers attending can keep observations whilst on route to the area in care the suspects have moved on to another street or village.

It also allows the staff in the control room to research the registration number and any subsequent intelligence attached to it.

The Trip of a Lifetime Her Majesty the Queen is embarking on the trip of a lifetime as she tours Great Britain during her Diamond Jubilee year.

Numerous people are going to have the trip of a lifetime as they are privileged to carry the Olympic flame throughout the land – even if only for a few hundred yards each. Athletes and tourists the world over are planning their trip of a lifetime as they plan to descend on London for the Olympic Games.

The Watoto Children’s Choir are also on a trip of a lifetime. As they tour the world, singing their hearts out and wowing audiences everywhere they go, their tour will eventually end and other children will take their place to form the next choir.

The choir is visiting All Saints Church on 3rd June. The children will eventually return to a more simple life back in Kampala.

Teams have gone out to build classrooms but they are very different from our schools. May I invite you to come and be ‘Watotoed’ on that Diamond Jubilee Day? There are no tickets and no entry fee. The concert starts at 6.30pm. There will be jewellery and CDs for sale and an offering will be taken. Listening to the choir for an evening will send you on a trip of a lifetime!

I read in the March Crowle Arrow that there had been some problems with off road driving in the area causing damage to lanes and crops so I thought I would send a short article on a local venue where off road vehicles can play without causing any disturbance.

Kirton Off Road Centre is located in a 600 acre quarry near Kirton in Lindsey with a wide variety of terrain including hills, rocks, mud, sand and water and is suitable for all vehicles from out of the factory to custom built machines, even tanks have played at the site. Once you have entered the site you can spend the whole day exploring at your own pace, there are no set routes or time limits, you decide what you want to attempt. They are open at least one day per month for bikes and quads and one day for 4x4s, vehicles do not have to be road legal but they must meet a basic level of safety and be silenced. Experienced marshals are always on hand to keep things safe and lend a helping hand when you get stuck! There are toilets, showers and a café serving hot and cold food on site as well as a camping area for the themed camping weekends. The site can also be booked privately for clubs. Don’t have a vehicle? No problem, tuition and taster rides are available in a selection of vehicles starting at just £5 or just come and watch.

Katie Chester will be a Torchbearer and carry the Olympic Flame!

Back in June 2011, The Axholme Academy decided to nominate a student to carry the Olympic Torch. This idea was taken to the staff who unanimously decided that 14 year old Katie Chester should be the student chosen for this honour. Miss Downs, Katie’s PE teacher, decided to take on the task of putting her nomination together.

She got in contact with Katie’s parents to ask their permission to nominate her and they were fully supportive of the school. Miss Downs went about collating all the information she needed for her nomination, including all of the activities that Katie did both inside and outside of school. The main reason the school decided to nominate Katie was due to her fantastic commitment to both her academic school work and all of her numerous extra-curricular activities. Here is Katie’s nomination form: I have decided to nominate Katie because she is a real inspiration within our rural community. She always strives to be the best that she can be, is always willing to help others and has a consistently positive attitude. During the two years that she has been at Secondary School she has achieved an enormous amount. Firstly she is a member of every single sports team going, including netball, rounders, hockey, table tennis and handball, even captaining the table tennis team to become North Lincolnshire Champions. She also takes four different dance lessons outside of school. As well as her sporting achievements she is also academically able and is fully involved in our School Council and Sports Council, willing to voice her own opinion and also gather the opinions of others to give them a voice too, which is particularly seen within her role as part of the School Newspaper. She takes violin lessons within school and is part of a youth string orchestra outside of school. On top of all this she manages to find time to be a fully active member of her Scout Group whereby she has raised money for charities on several occasions. Katie is an extremely confident young lady who is a pleasure to teach and be around at all times. She is always willing to help out her peers and teachers alike no matter how busy she is. I feel that she would really benefit from an opportunity like this and I would like to give something back to her since she spends so much of her time helping other people.

Katie and her family were elated when they found out the exciting news that she had been chosen to carry the Olympic torch, she even jumped up and down in Miss Downs’ classroom when she gave her the news! Katie has been fitted for her uniform and has found out that she will be carrying the torch on Wednesday 27 th June in Grimsby. Principal, Joe Sellars, said ‘we are all extremely proud of Katie and her achievements thus far. She is an extraordinary young lady who makes a fantastic contribution on so many fronts. We aim to take a group of fellow students to watch her carry the torch and give her a big cheer as she passes by!

On Friday 23rd March 2012, The Axholme Academy played host to the third ‘It’s a Knockout’ competition to raise money for Sport Relief. All of Key Stage 3 were involved, with students competing in their forms against other forms in the year group. They took part in fun races, which included sack races, egg and spoon races, hockey dribble races and skipping races, and each form were asked to wear a specific colour. The races were very hotly contested with form tutors cheering their form groups on and urging them to try their hardest. Each race had 10 students from each form competing in it and the form tutor ensured that everyone took part in at least one race. The races were measured out so that in each race, the form as a group covered a mile, to contribute towards the ‘Sport Relief mile’. All students were asked to gain sponsorship for the event, with two students in Year 7 raising a phenomenal amount of over £80 each therefore Thomas Arrand and Holly Dowson were crowned as Sport Relief Heroes along with Morgan Nason who raised a magnificent £151.00. The Axholme Academy managed to raise almost £800 from this event, alongside approximately £400 being raised through a nonuniform event on the day. All of the students and staff had a fun afternoon and were extremely pleased for the amount they raised on the day.

THE AXHOLME JOINT RAILWAY (continued)

The first sod for the Goole and Marshland Railway was cut on 22 September 1898 at Eastoft. On July 20th 1899 the first sod for the Axholme Railway was cut. It was made into a great occasion. Epworth was decorated with flags, banners and streamers and over various arches were inscribed such phrases as “ Long looked for”, “Progress and prosperity”, “Coming at Last”, “Patience Rewarded” and “Success to Agriculture”. A grand procession wound its way through the town led by the Goole Band.

Several thousand people were present at the ceremony. The day was marked as a public holiday. In the evening there were sports and fireworks. Medals were presented to children of Epworth as a reminder of the historic events. On the medals were the words “Manus justa nardus” – A just hand is balm.

Construction work on the Marshland Line started in February 1899 and by January 1900 it was open to trains. The Axholme Railway was progressing at both ends. By June 1900 the line was completed north from Crowle to Reedness and east to Eastoft. By June 1901 the line had been extended from Eastoft to Luddington and Fockerby. Meanwhile the southern section was progressing well. On the 25th November 1901, four hundred people watched the first engine (named ‘Epworth’) cross the bridge over the road into Epworth Station. The engine was decorated with flags and an archway had been erected over the line bearing the words “Success to the Work”.

In 1902 work started on the swing bridge over the Kennet and Keadby canal south of Crowle together with the viaducts over the drains, road and railway nearby. This section of the line cost about £40,000 and 3,000 men worked on it. The swing bridge and adjoining viaduct was 300 feet long and was the main engineering achievement of the railway.
