In this months issue we have tributes for Lex Strong, the brave little boy of Epworth who was taken away on 25th January. I have read the amazing tributes on his FB page and I, with a 6 year old myself cannot imagine how parents feel when they lose a child. I shed many tears this month, I haven't met Lex or his family but that’s just how he touched so many hearts.

Lakes Country Park Rescue Day Saturday 13th July 2013 On behalf of the Rescue Day Committee I would like to take this opportunity to invite you to Rescue Day 2013 hosted by 7 Lakes Country Park. As I’m sure you are aware, like so many other major UK events, Rescue Day 2012 did not take place due to the spate weather conditions. However, the 2011 event was a huge success seeing approximately 20,000 visitors and almost £20,000 raised for various National and local charities.

Without doubt Rescue Day could not occur without the tremendous work carried out by the Rescue Day Committee and the generosity of the many helpers and sponsors along with our host who have contributed and continue to assist in making Rescue Day the largest of its kind in both the UK and Europe.

The primary aim is to bring together members of all the Emergency Services, both within our own area and neighbouring regions linked with other voluntary and aid organisations, to provide our communities with information relating to road safety, fire safety and waterside safety, through education and demonstration.

These messages will be delivered through road traffic collision demonstrations, surface and subsurface water rescue demonstrations along with educational trailers and stands from a large number of organisations.

The full schedule will be available within the Rescue Day Program available on the day and also on the Rescue Day Web site (See www.Rescue.com). All involved will endeavour to ensure that all demonstrations and displays run at the scheduled time, however, they are approximations due to current on call obligations of the organisations and aircraft attending the event this year.

Rescue Day 2013 will see the return of Watersafe UK Search and Rescue Team who operate with Newfoundland Rescue Dogs, the team will be displaying with partners from the Emergency Services and Hazard Area Response Teams.

This year’s chosen charities are Humber Rescue, Lincs and Notts Air Ambulance and several Emergency Service charities along with many local charities. It is hoped that, along with the generosity of sponsors, we can raise as much money as possible for such worthy causes.

The day, attended by Sally ‘traffic’ from BBC Radio 2, will consist of a variety of displays and demonstrations that will appeal to all ages. The Battle of Britain Memorial Flight – as in previous years - are scheduled to open the event with a spectacular flypast and the Red Devils Parachute Team will perform an exclusive ‘water drop’ into the main lake. The cost for a family of four is still only Ten pounds.

Isle Group of the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust News Our next meeting to be held at The Stephen Jones Hall, Low Street, Haxey is on 7th March 2013 at 7.30 pm.

The Guest speaker is PC Nick Willey, who will talk about Wildlife Crime in the area.

The programme of folk dances in the Isle of Axholme under Isle Dance for Health is coming to Crowle and Ealand in March.

The three dances in Westwoodside Village Hall and the first of the dances in Epworth have attracted large and rapturous audiences and were deemed to be a great success. Everyone really liked the live music played by local folk dance band, Lys St Georges, as well as the teaching and the selection of folk dances.

The dances are geared towards those over the age of 40 and have been funded by NHS North Lincolnshire’s Community Improvement Grants 2013.

No previous experience is needed as expert tuition is on hand.

Future dates are: Crowle Community Centre and Ealand Victory Hall Thursday 7 March Wednesday 13 March Thursday 21 March All dances run from 2.30 – 4.30pm and are free.

Crowle & Ealand Town Council Mayor’s Announcements Cllr Paul Vernum, our Mayor last year started a tradition of holding an evening of entertainment to give an opportunity for the Council to say THANK YOU. We thank all the dedicated volunteers who make our community events possible. Last year we also managed to raise £650 which was donated to Greenacres Nursing home. This year I have found it difficult to choose any one charity so have decided to support two. One is Daisy Lincs children’s disability youth club which runs every week at Scunthorpe United’s ground and has children from Crowle and Ealand attending, the other is The Lindsay Blind Club which has been running at Ealand for some years and offers people with sight impairment an opportunity to socialise once a fortnight. The blind club would very much like to run a trip out when the weather is better and do not have adequate funds to cover transport costs. I hope you will agree that my chosen charities are worthy.

Last year our local businesses did us proud with their wonderful raffle prize contributions and I hope that they will be able to support us again and I give my sincere thanks.

The event will be held on Saturday 20th April in The Community Hall in Crowle and invitations will be sent out to all voluntary groups. We will be having a raffle, an auction of paintings and entertainment is provided by local singer Grace Bower. The Town Council will provide some food and tea and coffee refreshments or bring your own favourite tipple. If you are a voluntary group and don’t receive an invite by the 14th March then please forgive us for not knowing about you and ask the clerk Kate Fowler for an invite.

PTFA donate Kindles to the English Department at The Axholme Academy The Axholme Academy P.T.F.A presented 30 brand new Kindle readers to the school this week.

The P.T.F.A have been fund raising to supply the English department with the electronic readers and approached the Isle of Axholme Lions to help with the cost. The Isle of Axholme Lions were pleased to help such a local cause involving children and sent a generous donation, which made the purchase possible. The 30 Kindles will supply a whole class and will be used throughout the academy for all year groups to encourage reading and improve literacy. The Isle of Axholme Lions were represented at the presentation by James Mackinlay (Lion's President) and Terry Condliff. Also present was the Principal, Joe Sellars , Literacy Coordinator, Mrs Emma Brameld, P.T.F.A Chairwoman Mrs Yvonne Arrand and Head Boy Henry Chafer and Head Girl Charlotte Ellwood.

Joe Sellars said ‘we are so grateful to our brilliant PTFA for raising funds for the Kindles. We are investing a lot in promoting reading with all our students by purchasing lots of books and the Kindles will be a further great encouragement to improve literacy’

Primary’s Puppet Fun! Our Partner Primary schools have been attending the Axholme Academy on a Monday afternoon to create a film using puppets since September.

The schools include Crowle, Reedness, Eastoft, Luddington & Garthorpe, Althorpe & Keadby and St Norbert’s Catholic Primary.

They were asked to create a film on sports; however, because of the recent Olympics they could have free rein over the choice of sport as long as the sport was an Olympic event.

On the first week they learned about the story board process of filming and scripting. Then on the second week they make their puppets. Finally, on the third and fourth week they used the equipment and the information they had learnt over the past weeks, to create their short films!

We interviewed Hayley Drayton the school Media Technician and she said “I would definitely do this again because it teaches planning and organisation”.

REMEMBERING There are many other references to Lex (Alexander Strong) in this edition. It was however my privilege to lead the service of thanksgiving for Lex’s life at Wesley memorial Methodist Church at the start of February. It happened to be the church where he was baptised in My 2005.

We inherit traditional ways of doing things, and remembering is the same. On Remembrance Sunday we keep silent for a minute. But many of you will know that at the Scunthorpe football match the previous Saturday to Lex’s funeral service there was, instead of silence, a minute of applause. In our service we had this too-and it seemed as if the applause was never going to end. Even better it was not restrained or polite applause, but raw and emotional. It was from and of the heart.

This contrasted with the remembering of Lex with the Epworth Brownies. When we sat down in a circle and told each other what was our memory, and our special thought Lex was a Stars Wars fan. I am not, but in the planning of the service my knowledge of Stars Wars increased a hundred fold.

So often we struggle to express what we feel in word and language. But God has given us hand and bodies too.

We read that there is a time to speak and a time to be silent, but there is a time to clap too.

On 5th February our applause was for Epworth’s bravest boy Lex. David Leese, Wesley Manse.

Our role is to Protect, Help and Reassure but this was so much more, The Epworth Neighbourhood team were on duty to do the road closures but we all felt this was more than doing our job, It was a privilege to be present on such a sad but incredible day to see so many people say goodbye to such a brave little boy, this day will be remembered not only by us but everyone that as followed Lex and it will be a day Epworth will never forget.
