AXHOLME NORTH POLICE REPORT Potts Lane Car Park and St Oswald’s Church, Crowle.

Anti-social behaviour and vehicle nuisance in the car park and youths congregating and causing a nuisance to local resident at the church. Update: - In the absence of any other major issues this problem has been upgraded from last month’s Priority Two During January there were no calls for service relating to the Car park at Potts Lane although there were five calls relating to inciPCSO 7576 PCSO 7889 PC1717 dents in the nearby area of the Market Place. These calls related to Paul Fearon Wendy Frear Graham Godley two males being arrested for theft of diesel, the reported theft of a pedal cycle, a group of people causing a noise nuisance celebrating the arrival of the New Year, a female acting in a disorderly manner again during the early hours of the New Year and a strange report of some dead game birds being found in the Market Place. The noisy group had moved on prior to Police attending the area and the disorder female has been seen and dealt with as per the complainant’s wishes. The dead birds were collected by the North Lincolnshire Council for disposal.

There were two calls in January relating to the Church Street area. These related to a group of youths acting in an anti-social manner outside the Youth Club and eggs and small missiles being thrown at a property the following evening. As a result of enquiries made a number of youths believed involved have been spoken to but at this stage no further action is to be taken against them.

Rural Crime and Country watch Issues. There have been a number of calls for service regarding persons trespassing on land for the purpose of poaching deer, hunting hares with dogs and riding off road vehicles often causing damage to crops and fencing. Evidence of these illegal activities has been discovered in the form of dead carcasses, tyre tracks across the fields and damage to property. A number of males who have travelled great distances to visit the Isle of Axholme have been checked in the area and reported for any offences that have been disclosed. This usually takes the form of traffic offences found by examining their vehicles and driver documents. Several males over the past months have been reported for hunting with dogs but this requires strong evidence of the offence being committed in order to obtain a successful prosecution at court.

Country watch has seen an increase in numbers on the Isle and this is open to membership from farmers, landowners and other land users. This membership also includes access to a text messaging service which warns of information pertinent to those members, for example hare coursers, deer poaching, and theft. Recent Issues Theft of Diesel = Two males have been arrested for theft of diesel in the Crowle area and their vehicle was seized as it was being used in the commission of the crime. An amount of diesel was returned to the complainant. Criminal Damage = A female from Crowle has been dealt as per the complainant’s wishes regarding her behaviour and damage to property in the town centre. Firearms Offences = A male from the area is on Police bail regarding his illegal possession of a firearm and live ammunition. Update re Drugs Offences = A male and female dealt with in two separate incidents in the Crowle area have been charged with the possession of cannabis and bailed to appear at North Lincolnshire Magistrates Court.

Another male has been issued with a fixed penalty notice for possession of cannabis as it was his first offence regarding the Class B Controlled Drug. A forth person is still on police bail for the possession of drugs which have been sent to the Forensic Science laboratory for analysis. Traffic Offences = A male from Doncaster has been reported for traffic offences after being checked in his vehicle following a report of males hunting with dogs. There was insufficient evidence to support any prosecution for the hunting offence.

The Local Neighbourhood Team will be conducting a walkabout on Station Road area of Keadby between 2pm to 3pm on Monday 2nd April 2012 to encourage community engagement.

THE HAXEY HOOD

Haxey Hood is a traditional activity dating from mediaeval times. It is held on January 6 th annually. The village men folk (and others) jostle and wrestle for a leather ‘hood’. And try to get it to their local public house whereupon there is a free beer all round.

This ancient tradition dates back to the 13th century. It originated, so the legend goes, when the Lady de Mowbray was out riding and her hood blew off. Thirteen local men chased and jostled for the honour of returning it. The man who recovered it had not the courage to give it to the Lady so he gave it to another man who presented it to her. The chase so pleased the Lady that she promised to give them each a piece of land for them selves if they could invent and continue a similar game to be played every January 6 th.

She also gave them the name ‘plough-boggins’, presumably from the way in which they turned the soil in their efforts to secure the hood.

The present day ‘Haxey Hood’ attracts plenty of visitors often including television cameras.

The ‘Lord’ of the Hood’ usually starts the proceedings on the mounting stone outside the St Nicholas Church gates. The Fool, (representing the shy man who recovered the original hood) makes a speech: “Oose agin oose Toon agin toon If thou meet a man Knock him doon Put doon ut im” The Lord, the Fool and the thirteen boggins lead the assemblage up past the church on to the Haxey Hill field (on the north side of the main road). Before the game proper, a number of sackcloth hoods are usually thrown, nowadays for the youngsters. Each is worth a shilling (5 pence) if taken to the public house. Around 3.30 p.m. the proper leather ‘Hood’ is thrown, usually by an eminent person. Anyone present may join in the sway to get the Hood to the either the Duke William, Kings Arms or Carpenter’s Arms at Westwoodside. The sway moves back and forth. The church’s surrounding wall often falls victim. Injuries sustained are usually slight. The boggins try, often bodily, to Plan Drawing Services & get unwary visitors into the sway. There are no Project Management Service rules to the game!

Chats How people like to chat! People of all ages, including children, love to chat with friends on Facebook or Skype or other social network sites. I don’t know how to twitter, though I am quite adept at texting. How did we manage to amuse ourselves before the invention of the internet and mobile phones?

The Christian Church is in the period we call ‘Lent’, the 6½ weeks before Easter Day. It is a time of self denial and spiritual growth. Right bang in the middle, there’s the celebration of Mothers’ Day (or Mothering Sunday) on Sunday 18th March – a time to forget the rigours of Lent for mums at least.

How glad I am it’s not called ‘Wive’s Day’!

So how can we celebrate Mothers’ Day? Simply by chatting to our Mums and by chatting to God about our Mums. That’s exactly what we aim to do in our Churches. And by chatting, we reckon children can join in too.

Crowle & Ealand Town Council Newsletter Park Improvements Manor and Ealand Park have both benefitted from Community hard work and determination to acquire grants for improvements.

On the 16th January all Year 9 students took part in Media PLTS day. PLTS stands for Personal Learning, and Thinking Two Year 9 Students involved in Skills. The whole idea the Animation workshop of a Media PLTS day is that we can use media to learn new skills, such as working with different people and completing tasks within a given time.

There were four workshops all with a running theme, copyright and piracy. Copyright is a big problem with teenagers as it can be confusing to understand and many songs can be expensive, leading to piracy. The day started of with an assembly in the hall telling us what groups we would be in and explaining all about copyright. We then brainstormed in our groups what we were going to do in the four workshops during the day.

These were: Animation, making a short film about copyright, Film posters using special software to make and edit posters on piracy. Photography and digital stories, using the computers to write about the day in a comic strip and making a radio commercial advertising copyright. Every group took part in each workshop and the whole day ended in another assembly showcasing what we had done. Everyone really enjoyed the day and one of the students said “I thought PLTS day was interesting and we developed our media skills”.

Student Newspaper Over the past few weeks, 20 students from Years 7 & 8 have been busy preparing articles for our school newspaper called the ‘AX NEWS’.

This culminated in the students interviewing students and staff on various items such as news, sport and entertainment and then on Tuesday 17th January, Lincoln University journalism lecturers came to The Axholme Academy and spent a full day helping our students in bringing all their articles together to produce the ‘AX NEWS’.

Academy Principal, Joe Sellars, said ‘we have produced our newspaper working with Lincoln University for 3 years and each has been even better than the ones before and we expect the spring edition to keep up this high standard. Our students put in an awful lot of preparatory work before the full day with the university and this ensures that we produce a great read. An entirely new set of young reporters have worked on this paper and their enthusiasm and dedication has been exceptional.’

We now have a fabulous re-developed Garden area which is suitable for ages 0 – 11 years olds. We have a separate baby area, as well as separate water & digging areas and a beautiful gazebo and willow den. As part of the build up to the 2012 Olympic Games, Althorpe and Keadby School are already participating in many activities. One such event took place on Friday 20th January, when 15 of our gifted and Talented pupils worked with designers Hayley and Ian. Their brief, set by the school governors, was to design and make our very own Olympic torch with links to the local community as well as to the games in London.

The morning was spent researching torches from previous games as well as investigating suitable materials. The designing then began in earnest, with the children working individually and then in groups of three, Links were made to the blast ferns on the steelworks, our famous bridges as well as Lincolnshire sausage and the river Trent. The Olympic values and the Olympic rings were also included in many designs.

The torches were taken to the governor meeting the following week for the winning design to be chosen. A very tricky decision! The winning designers, Eve Richards, Ethan Freeston and Keira Tebbutt now plan to spend more time making their torch ‘for real’ our of stronger materials so that it can be used in our own torch relay on Monday 25th June.

Eric Yates and Pauline Turner from The North Axholme Allotment Society cast on experienced eye over the progress of the garden project run by pupils and staff of Crowle Primary school.

Tracy Hotchin, the school’s Key Stage 1 Leader said “the aim of the project is to develop a garden for the children to use which would enhance the school curriculum and other aspects of school life. The children grow fruit and vegetables which could be used in the school’s kitchen and at home. The garden will also have a wildlife area, including a pond that would attract animals and insects.”

Mr Yates said “the progress made by the children is pretty amazing and the garden looks really good - even in February. I think these young ones can teach some of our folks a lesson or two. I think I recognize a few here today who come to help mums, dads and family on their allotments. “ He went on to commend the Leader and the pupils adding that “the allotment society will be delighted to offer practical support to the project in whatever practical way we can.”

Miss Hotchin said “We are thrilled with the offer of help from the allotment society to help our nature garden, and I am sure this will be a great opportunity for our pupils to work alongside members of their community”.

The school began to work on the nature area three years ago when it was quite a jungle! Since then they have worked hard with the welcome help of staff, parents and governors, to create a vegetable plot and some raised beds. One of the teachers has been busy making a greenhouse out of plastic bottles. The school also welcomed REGEN’s donation of a shed to store their equipment.

Miss Hotchin added “It was a pleasure to watch the children excitedly digging for the potatoes they had grown. Our gardening club is very keen to grow the vegetables and help to maintain the plot.

Last year we harvested a range of produce - potatoes, onions, marrows, pumpkins and apples. Much of the produce was used in the school kitchen, and some taken home to parents!

Last year we began to make a link with the North Axholme Allotment Society, and 18 this has gone frommention strength to“The Please strength. I think it is a great opportunity for our pupils to have links with our

Tutors from John Leggott College visited The Axholme Academy on Thursday 2nd February.

The purpose of the visit was to show the students what courses are available at John Leggott College before choosing their options at the Academy. This is valuable because some courses at John Leggott College require specific GCSE’s and students need to be aware of this so that they make sure they choose the right options that will enable them to enter their chosen course.

Students chose four subjects prior to the event such as Psychology, Law, Philosophy, Languages, English, Creative Arts, Fun & Business, Science/Maths & Computing.

The comments from the students were very positive, one student said “I liked all the activities I chose which were Creative Arts, English, Psychology & Languages. They were thought provoking and entertaining. I wish the lessons had been longer as it seemed to be over far too quickly”.
