Brian Jubb and John Naylor visited the club to present their images. Underwater Photography was the title and members were not disappointed.

Their diving expeditions in the Red Sea produced an abundance of photographs of exotic marine life on beautiful coral reefs. It was a very entertaining and educational evening. Thankfully, the problem of flooding caused by burst pipes in the Hall had been solved, or it might have been an evening under water for the members, too.

Class times are 6-7pm, 7-8pm then Body Tone from 8-8.45pm. £3.50 per class.

Due to the adverse weather before Christmas, Erica Oram from Sheffield had cancelled her planned presentation on Urban Landscapes, but managed to reschedule it on the evening when the competition of the same title was to be held. The competition will now take place at a later date.

Erica's travels have taken her all over the world, and it was interesting to see an alternative type of landscape photography.

CROWLE TOWN CENTRE – ANTISOCIAL BEHAVIOUR AND VEHICLE NUISANCE. The implementation of the dispersal order has reduced calls for service and the youths are now fully aware of its existence. Residents have commented on the reduction of anti-social behaviour in the area. One issue raised was that some of the youths are now congregating in the new car parkPCSO PCSO 7576 PC1717 ing area in the town centre which was formally the Graham Godley Wendy Frear Paul Fearon car park for the George and Dragon Public House.

The Neighbourhood Team have liaised with North Lincolnshire Council and Crowle Town Council and are to monitor the situation before deciding if to include the area in the dispersal zone. One male has been reported for summons and will be dealt with at North Lincolnshire Magistrates for the public order offence of disorderly behaviour. Another male stopped and checked in the car park at Potts Lane has been reported for the offence of possession of cannabis. Another young driver has been referred to a driver training scheme following his manner of driving and will be prosecuted if he re-offends.

KEADBY ANTI-SOCIAL BEHAVIOUR AND VEHILCE NUISANCE STATION ROAD. There have been a number of calls regarding youths congregating on Station Road in Keadby and acting in an anti-social manner. Youths are gathering under the bus shelter and also in vehicles on the New Generation car park and playing loud music. Some of these youths are also disrupting the games and events organised by the North Lincolnshire Council Street Sports Team on the playing field. Local residents report being intimidated by the groups congregating in the area although the main cause of complaint is that of noise and litter that the youths create. One young male has been spoken to by the Police in relation to his conduct and his father made aware of his behaviour.

WILDLIFE CRIME Wildlife crime is of concern to farmers and landowners on the Isle of Axholme. Some offenders are travelling great distances with dogs to trespass on land in the search and pursuit of game, mainly hares and deer. It is important that every effort is made to reduce the opportunity for this type of crime to occur and to bring offenders to justice. The Neighbourhood team together with their uniformed colleagues recognise the importance of creating secure environments for farmers and landowners on the Isle of Axholme. There is a Farm Watch/Country Watch scheme running and together we are actively seeking ways to resolve this issue. This is a continuing concern in the area, and there have been a number of successful responses from the Police on the Isle of Axholme. A number of persons have been identified as being connected to some of these incidents and have been reported for their involvement. This situation will continue to be monitored and positive action will be taken.

A male has been charged following a break in at a Althorpe and is currently going through the court system. The Neighbourhood Team continues to deal with anti-social behaviour in Crowle especially around the Potts Lane car park and town centre area. One male has been reported for the public order offence of causing harassment alarm and distress and will be dealt with at North Lincolnshire Magistrates Court.

A male from Crowle has been charged with the offence of harassment following his course of action and is currently on bail to North Lincolnshire Magistrates Court. A male has been cautioned regarding a minor assault at Crowle. A male has been issued with an ÂŁ80 fixed penalty ticket after being stopped on the A18 at Crowle and found to be in possession of cannabis. A male from Crowle is currently on bail to North Lincolnshire Magistrates Court regarding the offences of possession of cannabis a class B drug, production of cannabis with intent to supply and possession of an electric stun gun which is a prohibit weapon. Crowle Rural Day Centre, managed by Independent Living North Lincolnshire and funded by North Lincolnshire Council, has vacancies for new members. The day centre, which is run by volunteers, provides a place for older people to meet and have a chat over a cup of tea and lunch.

There is the opportunity to join in with new age curling, games or just socialise with new friends. The centre has arranged day trips, coffee mornings and everyone enjoys the annual Christmas lunch.

The day centre, held at Crowle Community Centre, is open every Thursday from approximately 10am to 2pm. If you are feeling lonely or isolated Crowle day centre will offer a warm welcome. Transport from certain areas can be arranged.

THE OLD RECTORY The Old Rectory, the birthplace of Methodism, is the object of pilgrimage from many parts of Britain and indeed the World. The present building is on the site of the previous Rectories, east of the centre of Epworth. In Samuel Wesley’s time fire destroyed the Rectory in 1704 and again in the famous fire of 1709 when the Rectory was entirely destroyed. It was rebuilt in 1709 at a cost of £184.00 in a solid architectural style with good solid ’ships’ timbers for the beams. Until 1954 this building had served at the Rectory for the Vicar but was falling into disrepair. I t was offered to the Methodist Church by the Church of England. It was bought with donations from The World Methodism and is the property of the World Methodist Council. It was restored in 1956-7. Care was taken to restore it to its 1709 state so that any since additions had to be removed.

Blocked up windows due to Window Tax had to be opened up. Where bricks were worn they were removed and turned the other way around. Where bricks were worn away, bricks from a building of similar age in the village were used. Many old pantiles had to be removed. During restoration an old arch of 17th century origin was discovered as well as the chimney bricks of a pre 1709 date. These were parts of the Rectory that had survived the 1709 fire.

Since the restoration many articles of furniture, pictures and other historic pieces have been recovered and put on display in the Old Rectory.

The Old Rectory a Grade1 Queen Anne listed building was officially opened on June 29 th, 1957 with visitors from all over the world attending.

In the earlier years from 1957 till 1971-2 August-to-August 75,442 people had visited with the exception of two years the figures grew rapidly. Below is a breakdown of those attendances: 1957-8 – 1712, 1958-9 – 3002, 1959-60 3704, 1960-1 – 4210, 1961-2 – 4405, 1962-3 – 4441, 1963-4 – 4582, 1964-5 – 5146, 1965-6 5982, 1966-7 5990, 1967-8 – 5853, 1968-9 – 5833, 1969-70 – 6006, 1970-1 6666, 1971-2 7910.

Since 1972 - 2009 visitor numbers have maintained figures between, 6,000 – 7,000. The new Millennium has seen many positive changes and improvements to the house, and a Physic Garden has also been added.

Isle Group of the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust Wildlife Gardening Mary Porter will be giving an illustrated talk on Wildlife Gardening on Thursday March 3rd to the Isle Group of the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust. She will be giving us lots of tips and ideas on how to attract wildlife into your garden. There are many different types of plants which can be grown in any size garden to attract birds and insects. This should be valuable information just before the spring gardening season begins. Other things such as ponds and bird boxes also encourage a variety of creatures into our gardens and Mary will give us lots of information about these. All our meetings are open to anyone, you don‘t have to be a member, so do come along.

Advance notice of our April meeting Cleethorpes to Paradise is the title of the talk which will be given by Ray Bramall and Peter Yeo on Thursday April 7th. These two local photographers have taken a series of photographs of the Lincolnshire Coast over a period of years which they will be sharing with us. No doubt we will see some places we have not seen before as well as some familiar scenes. The evening will be preceded by a very short AGM. We meet on the first Thursday of the month from October to May at the new hall at the rear of Haxey Methodist Chapel on Low Street starting at 7.30pm. There is a small admission charge of £1 and there is a raffle and refreshments. Bird food is always on sale at the meetings as well as at Geoff‘s house in Belton.

Parents’/Carers’ Safeguarding Evening at North Axholme School During recent years, safeguarding in schools has become increasingly high profile. In response to this, there have been a number of national and local guidance documents published which have led to the development of a school safeguarding policy (available on www.northax.net).

Part of the schools strategy for tackling safeguarding issues involves raising the awareness of ‗risky behaviours‘ with parents, carers and other family members within our local community. To this end, a second annual safeguarding evening is taking place at school between 6.20pm and 9.00pm on Wednesday 9th March 2011.

Work has progressed steadily in the refurbishment of Manor Park despite some delay due to the bad weather and it will be open for use from 1st, March. This is an opportunity for people of all ages to enjoy this facility: there is an area devoted to toddlers situated in a fenced off area next to the pathway leading into the park from Johnson's Lane, a site for teenagers set in the middle of the park, and exercise equipment for older people dispersed all around the park. A wildlife area has been designated and sharing the same edge of the park adjacent Crowle Primary School will eventually be sited a multi -games area for football and basketball. The park will be open from dawn till dusk and a notice board will display opening and closing times. The success of the recently refurbished Ealand Park would suggest that Manor Park will become a well used resource and attract families from Crowle, Ealand, and surrounding areas. Some work still needs to be done in the park and a grant application is in hand to fund these developments.

Market Square March 26th. Is a date to note in your diary as it is planned to hold a market in Crowle and make use of the new market place. If anyone is interested in having a stall they should contact the town clerk for details. Local groups may also wish to make use of this opportunity to meet local people and visitors to the town.

Since it is intended to hold markets on a regular basis there is a need to set up a management committee and if anyone is interested in being a member they should contact the town clerk.

2011 CENSUS March 27th. Is the day of the new census? Each resident in the community is expected to answer a questionnaire and supply personal details which can be used to assess the need for services provided by local authorities. Without these questionnaires the data may not reflect the true nature of the community‘s needs and is likely to distort the range and quality of services provided. The census is required by law under the Census Act of 1920, and all personal information given is protected under the Data Protection Act of 1998. Since housing, education, healthcare and public transport depend in part on this census it will be to everyone‘s benefit if all questionnaires are completed and returned.

Elections Looking ahead to May, local elections will take place and this is your chance to register your interest and stand for Crowle and Ealand Council. Over the last term of the council a great number of initiatives have been undertaken with many brought to a successful conclusion as a result of councillors becoming involved in work outside of their immediate responsibilities to attend council meetings.

If you enjoy working for the benefit of the community and the satisfaction that accompanies this kind of work, and then see the town clerk.

2nd Crowle Scout Group The Beavers have just completed their Global Challenge badge and are now working on the Friendship badge.

A group of Cubs carried out a 5 mile walk around Crowle as part of their hiker badge. At the same time a group of Scouts carried out a 13 mile walk from Crowle to Luddington in preparation for the Wolds Challenge.

The Cubs are currently working on their Home Safety badge.

These Scouts then competed in the Wolds Challenge coming 17 out of 39. This is a fantastic achievement as it was the first time 2nd Crowle has entered the event.

The Scouts are currently working on their DIY badge The next event is a day on a high ropes course at the end of March for the Cubs and Scouts.

Planning is well underway for a trip to PGL in September and a camp in June.

Scunthorpe Young People’s Film Festival On the evening of Wednesday 9th February the film festival was hosted at The Base Youth Centre in Scunthorpe. Several of our students submitted films for categories ranging from short fiction trailers to documentaries. Some films were produced by students during lessons, with other submissions coming from work produced during weekend film making workshops hosted in school during the Autumn term.

On the evening, four North Axholme students received awards at the festival. Rosie Scorer collected an Oscar for Runner up Short Fiction trailer for her film ‗12 minutes‘, whilst Robyn O‘Leary won this category with her film ‗Heroes now Homeless‘. Ryan Bailey and Letitia Bolton collaborated with students from other North Lincolnshire schools to produce a film called ‗Mr Diabetes‘ which won the ‗documentary - younger age range‘ category.

My congratulations go out to each of these students for their success at the festival. I hope this will serve as inspiration to other students interested in film making and animation to produce some really high quality work which can be submitted for next year‘s film festival. Well done to all involved!

Sock/Glove Puppet Workshop 42 primary school pupils and their mums, dads and grandparents took part in another successful Sock/ Glove Puppet workshop hosted by North Axholme School Media Arts College in February. The children from St Norbert‘s Catholic Primary School, Crowle Primary School, Althorpe & Keadby Primary School, Eastoft Primary School & Luddington & Garthorpe Primary School worked with their parents to create a puppet made from socks or gloves. The puppets were then decorated using recycled materials such as shredded paper for the body of the puppet and recycled material and paper to decorate. The event was led by Jo Miller from the 20-21 Visual Arts Centre in Scunthorpe.

One of the parents present said that it was a ―great workshop, completely child friendly and therapeutic for Mum‘s too‖.

This was our fifth workshop delivered at school with 20-21 as part of our specialist school community plan and the turn out from parents and children from our partner primary schools was fantastic once again.

What are YOU giving up this Lent?

Shrove Tuesday, otherwise known as Pancake Day, is not far away (8th March). The day after is known as Ash Wednesday, the beginning of Lent. Lent is the six weeks before Easter and traditionally, many people ‗give up something‘ for Lent as a kind of self discipline.

The most ‗popular‘ thing to give up is some kind of food – chocolate, sweets, crisps, cakes and puddings – or drink – a ban on all alcohol. Young people like to think they can give up homework, but not surprisingly, parents disagree. They might prefer their children give up some spare time to keep their bedrooms neat and tidy without being coerced!

Now is the time to start planning what YOU will give up this year. The hope is that by giving things up for a few weeks, we will be fitter and happier by the time Easter arrives. But please don‘t ruin all the good work done in weight loss during the Lenten season by eating too many Easter eggs on Easter Day. Easter Day is always a special celebration in the life of the Church. The Lenten fast is over, but more importantly, Jesus has risen from the dead! More about that in the next edition of Arrow.

Crowle Primary School had their latest Ofsted inspection on the 8th and 9th December 2010. The Ofsted team judged the school to be good with outstanding features.

The significant strengths, which were given outstanding grades include the Early Years Foundation Stage, pupils‘ contribution to their school and local community and their understanding of how to live healthy lifestyles.

Headteacher, Anna Cvijetic and the children and staff at the school are delighted with the report and felt it gave a true picture of the strengths of the school and the areas which need further development. The Ofsted comments on ―a good team spirit and high expectations‖ which Anna believes is fundamental to sustain improvements.

There are many highlights in the report such as; ‗Good teaching which encapsulates collaborative work and develops the talents of individuals.‘ ‗One parent described the school as, ‗one huge family‘.‘ ‗Pupils are happy, confident and courteous. They really enjoy school and make friends easily.‘ ‗Good behaviour underpins their learning and their play.‘ ‗Pupils enjoy their first-rate healthy lifestyles in school.‘ ‗Pupils have a strong voice in school.‘ ‗A recurring theme in comments from parents and carers is how well they feel their children are looked after in school and that staff are exceedingly responsive to pupils‘ needs.‘ Everyone was particularly pleased with the outcomes for the Early Years Foundation Stage, which achieved outstanding in all four grades.

Dying Matters 2011 Because we are unwilling to talk about death many of our wishes at the end of life will be ignored or unfulfilled. If we do not communicate our thoughts about the future, and those around us do not listen, the control that we could achieve at this time will not happen and it has been said that what we most fear about death is the loss of control. It is important to remember that talking about illness and death does not bring it closer but it does mean that we are in control of our life so we can live as well as possible until death.

In March 2010 the first Dying Matters day was held in Scunthorpe and those who attended found that the information they received was useful, practical and supportive. It was planned and run by the Integrated Palliative Care team which comprises professionals and interested parties in North Lincolnshire including Macmillan and Lindsey Lodge Hospice.

The day which is being repeated on 19th May at The Angel in Brigg 10 – 2pm will have a variety of contributors, some who attended last year and some new. Help, information and advice will be available to help individuals cope during a period of illness and after the patient‘s death, including advice about finances, wills, clinical problems, bereavement, funerals and helping children There will be an exhibition of bespoke coffins and ideas of how to make memory boxes and books as permanent reminders of the deceased.

Everyone is welcome and refreshments are available.
