Isle Community News

Epworth and District Flower Club

In April the members met for a workshop evening. Almost all of the membership was in attendance to watch the demonstrator, Sarah, create an Easter display. After only a few minutes Sarah had used tulips, narcissi, various greenery, roses and carnations of varying shades of lemon and yellow and a wreath was made to be used as a table arrangement! It was completed with a few imitation eggs on sticks and a small container of chocolate eggs. Next it was the turn of the members. Absolutely everything was provided and the ladies worked hard with a constant pleasurable buzz. Eventually 32 arrangements were made, all slightly reflecting the ability and personality of each member. Some had tall roses and tulips, some had cut their flowers shorter but every one was beautiful. Some were left to decorate St Andrew’s Church for Easter.

The evening concluded as usual with refreshments. The May meeting was planned to welcome Lucy Griffin from Retford and the June meeting, to be held on 12th June in St Andrew’s Church will host Sue Hodgson who will demonstrate “Super Sleuths”. Come and join us, we are growing fast, and discover what the sleuths are!

Linda Clarke of Spotted Dog Flowers will demonstrate in July at the usual time of 7.30pm and the usual night, the second Monday of the month.

Crowle & District WI meet at 7.15pm on the 1st Thursday of the month at Crowle Community Hub, Market Hall, Crowle DN17 4LA. We have members from all over North and South Axhome and beyond and always give a warm welcome to new members. Our April meeting was a very interesting talk by Hannah, the District Herbalist and our May meeting was a Cheese & Wine themed evening to coincide with the Kings Coronation. Our June meeting will be Stuart Garfoot talking and demonstrating Canal Art and he will bring items to sell. We will also be able to have a go ourselves. Come along to any of our meetings and give us a go, we are very friendly.

High Levels WI

The members of High Levels WI met on Wednesday 19th April, paid their annual subscriptions and were welcomed to the meeting. Following the usual rendering of Jerusalem and a small amount of business the entertainment began. Six members of a South Yorkshire Belly Dance Troupe performed some dances and then invited members to join in. They explained the routines, their involvement and the health benefits. Questions produced a lot of information about the ladies themselves, to whom and where they were asked to entertain. It was certainly an enjoyable and informative evening. In June, some members have chosen to have afternoon tea at Crowle Moors Railway. This follows the talk by Angus Townley on the History of Crowle moors. The evening meeting on June 21st will host a speaker who will talk about Mary’s Meals. This is a charity which aims to provide a daily meal for every child in its place of education. High Levels WI is a friendly group of ladies who meet at the Reindeer Inn, Sandtoft on the third Wednesday of each month. The meetings begin at 6.45pm. Do come and join us and/or look at our website www.highlevelswi.co.uk

Nursing team step forward for ‘It’s a Knockout’ Challenge

A group of clinical staff have stepped forward to represent their charity run Hospice in its first ever ‘It’s a Knockout’ event on Friday 23 June.

The team of 10 from Lindsey Lodge Hospice & Healthcare – known as ‘Lindsey’s Angels’ - will go head to head with more than 20 other teams from local businesses across North Lincolnshire for an event filled with inflatables, water, foam and fun to raise valuable funds for the Burringham Road-based Hospice, which celebrated 30 years of care in 2022.

Lindsey Lodge Operational Matron Karen Andrew said: “I’m so proud of our team for stepping up to take part!

“They work hard every day to care for our patients and their families, so know first-hand how important it is for us to raise the much-needed funds to be able to continue to provide our specialist palliative care to our local community.

“I hope local people will support us by sponsoring us, and helping us to get to our £1,000 target!”

Teams will go head to head and take on the challenge on Lindsey Lodge’s events field from 5pm. They will face a wide range of fun-filled obstacles and challenges, with scores being tracked on a central leader board, competing for the crown of ’It’s a Knockout Champions’ 2023.

Lindsey Lodge Fundraising Co-ordinator Kathryn Stuart said: “We’re asking each team of ten to raise £1,000 in sponsorship for taking part. So far, they’ve set up JustGiving pages to share on their social media channels, as well as getting creative by arranging bake sales and dress down days to get to their target.”

She added: “We’re also encouraging the local community to come along and support the event. We’ll be asking for a minimum of £1 as a donation for entry, and guests will have access to food, live music and a licensed bar, as well as a whole host of inflatables and activities for the kids to enjoy.”

Karen Andrew added: “It will be so lovely to see our team having so much fun! We’ll also be bringing our very own cheerleaders – Bosley’s Babes – made up from other members of our clinical team to provide even more encouragement for our fundraising teams at the event!

To sponsor the Lindsey Lodge team, please visit their JustGiving page at: https:// www.justgiving.com/page/ lindseylodgeteam2023?

Ashby pub raises thousands for charity

Regulars at an Ashby pub reached a £20,000 fundraising milestone for a North Lincolnshire charity.

Kind-hearted staff and customers at the Queen Bess public house recently handed over a cheque for £4,005 to Lindsey Lodge Hospice and Healthcare, which means they’ve raised a total of £20,242 over the years.

Lindsey Lodge Fundraiser Kathryn Stuart, who visited the Derwent Road pub to pick up the latest donation said: “This is a huge amount of money to raise for Lindsey Lodge and we are overwhelmed by the kindness and generosity of everyone at the Queen Bess.”

She added: “Every time we visit the pub, we’re given such a warm welcome.

“It’s a great local pub, with brilliant customers and they should be extremely proud of what they’ve achieved.

“On behalf of the Lindsey Lodge, I’d like to say a massive thank you to everyone for their support – every penny raised goes towards helping local patients and families who require our specialist care.”
