Welcome to the June issue of the Arrow!

On writing this editorial the weather is fabulous and next week brings us the promise of warmer weather as we head towards the summer months.

As the months fly by we head into another election period and we once again encounter the final term of the school year and enter exam season. Good luck to all those families with children studying hard! Don’t forget as well as studying get plenty of exercise outdoors to help you relax and take a break at this stressful time.

Kirton in Lindsey Archery Club is welcoming everyone to give archery a go!

Archery GB’s Big Weekend comes to KLASSIC Park on the weekend of the 17 – 18 June. Archery GB’s Big Weekend, in association with Foresters Friendly Society, will see around 90 clubs across the country open their doors to potential archers.

Kirton in Lindsey Archery Club is located at KLASSIC Park, Ings Rd, Kirton in Lindsey, DN21 4BX. All equipment will be provided, therefore all participants need to do is bring along themselves and plenty of enthusiasm*.

Eastoft Gardening Club meet in the Village Hall on the 2nd Wednesday of each month at 7.30pm. Our meetings are open to anyone for just £3.00 per session or an annual subscription is just £15 inc refreshments We have guest speakers and practical workshops.

This year we are part of the RHS Britain in bloom initiative greening grey Britain. Along with our PC, School and Hall Farm we are transferring otherwise waste areas of land into wildflower and wildlife areas. We are just waiting for news on funding to placing a rowing boat on the Village green to mark the historical course of the old River Don which once flowed through the middle of the village and along what is now one of the greens. The 120th Crowle Show will take place on Sunday July 16th 2017 at the show field on Godnow Road Crowle.

Main ring attractions this year commence at 11am, these include flying vultures, sheep dog displays, stunt riders, vintage vehicles, horse and hounds, a tug of war competition, polo and other activities.

For the first time this year we have a poultry show which has already generated lots of interest, and subject to bird flu restrictions being lifted should provide another interesting attraction on the day.

We have numerous ridden and in hand horse and pony classes taking place in 3 rings from 9am as well as show jumping and side saddle classes.

The Judging of cattle and sheep classes begin at 1pm where we are expecting an excellent turnout of good quality animals.

A produce show with a variety of classes provides an opportunity for children as well as adults to enter items that they have made or grown.

As this is our 120th show, the children’s painting competition will have a Victorian theme, so we hope to see some pictures that show how costumes transport and agriculture have changed over the last century.

Following last years successful fun dog show we are holding one again this year with classes starting at 1pm, entries will be taken on the day from 12 noon with lots of rosettes and spot prizes to be won by family pets.

We have a wide range of trade stalls including food outlets, angling supplies, pet supplies, arts and crafts plus numerous others.

There will be a beer tent, fairground attractions, donkey rides, bee keeping display and majorettes Admission prices remain at £5 for adults, £3 for children and concessions. Family tickets are £10 A free minibus will be running on the day to pick up people from 7 Lakes, Crowle Market Place and Nicholsons garage.

Luddington and Haldenby Parish Council Newsletter, May 2017.

Hanging basket competition. This annual competition will take place once again so read the books and order from the catalogues, do the research and enter the competition. The baskets will be judged in late July.

Public participation/Planning process.

There is a 10-minute session at the start of all meetings which provides time for residents to discuss any concerns or to just attend to observe proceedings. Residents are invited to attend Parish Council meeting to provide additional details of their planning applications.

2017/2018 Precept The precept for the coming year is £4400.Most of this amount is spent on cutting the large areas of grass throughout the whole village, some light tree work and litter picking to keep your village clean and tidy.

Community News Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust Axholme Group Our indoor meetings are now over until October but we will be having a few activities over the summer. There was a visit in May to Rush Furlong, a wildflower meadow in Haxey, where there are thousands of rare green winged orchids as well as cowslips and other flowers which is a spectacular sight.

We are planning a visit to a small reserve in Goole later in the summer. As yet we haven't finalised a date but anyone interested in going can contact Tony Lee 01427 753831 or Chris Trinder 01427 872051 in early June to get more details.

The Wildlife Trust has approximately 100 reserves around Lincolnshire. These include Far Ings National Nature Reserve in the north near the Humber Bridge, Whisby Pits near Lincoln and Gibraltar Point National Nature Reserve near Skegness, all of which are open to the public and well worth a visit.

The new visitor centre at Gibraltar Point has a wonderful cafe with a good choice of food so why not make a day of it.

Axholme Camera Club News: The months of June and July are when we start getting out and about – weather permitting - and we only meet on the first and third Wednesdays of these two months.

From September to the end of May we meet weekly in St Nicholas Church Hall, Haxey starting at 7.30 pm to approximately 9.30 pm. We are a very friendly club and welcome any newcomers.

Epworth Music Day 2017 – It’ll soon be 10am on Saturday 24 June!

We're putting the final preparations in place for this year's Epworth Music Day on Saturday 24 June.

Once again, there is a cracking programme of music to entertain you throughout the day. We've attracted 49 groups and performers, including choirs, rock bands, folk bands, folk singers and instrumentalists, handbell ringers, brass ensemble, wind bands, Jazz Orchestra, classical guitarists, classical singers, Town Waits bands, Tudor dances, ukulele bands, punk guitarists and many more besides. This should be some music on this very varied programme which will interest and delight you!

The music starts at 10am and runs across 13 different venues until 5pm. In the evening, there will be concerts in St Andrew’s Church (starting at 7pm), at the Queen's Head (starting at 8pm) and in Jinksy’s Bar (starting at 9pm).

At 2-00 The Tractor Run Chairman will officially open the new Information Board on Church Street to celebrate the 270 years since the Amcotts Moor Woman was discovered in 1747.

The only remaining Sandal from the Amcotts Moor Woman has been kept at Spalding Antiquarian Society for 270 years since it was discovered. However The Amcotts Sandal will be on loan to Scunthorpe Museum during the months of July August and September 2017 especially for the 270 year celebrations.

For the first time there will be an "Amcotts" display in Scunthorpe Museum about our village and many of the items researched by the Local History Group will be available for all to see. We do need further items of interest for the display and if you think anything you have would be appropriate, please let either Tricia Murphy (01724 783614 ) or Gill Bush have the details.

New York 2017 26 students and 4 staff from The Axholme Academy & Huntcliff School travelled to New York City during the Easter holidays for four days.

The itinerary was jam packed with students visiting Grand Central Station, MOMA (Museum of Modern Art), Central Park Zoo, Statue of Liberty & Ellis Island, Ground Zero, Walking Tour to Brooklyn Bridge, China Town & Little Italy and a Broadway Show (Charlie & The Chocolate Factory).

The students enjoyed spending their dollars shopping in Times Square, Macy’s & Century 21 which was just a short walk from our hotel.

The students also ate at the Famous Bubba Gump Restaurant, Planet Hollywood, an Italian restaurant famous for ‘Cannoli’ in Little Italy and an ‘all you can eat breakfast’ in a deli near the hotel.

The visit was an exciting cultural experience for the students taking in the hustle & bustle of city life, walking miles across different blocks around the city, seeing the famous yellow taxis and travelling on the subway to Battery Park.

Everyone had a fantastic time and will have memories that will last a lifetime.

Disneyland Paris/Netball Visit On the 9th April 2017, 25 students along with 4 members of staff from The Axholme Academy travelled to Paris in order to take part in an International Netball Festival. Students eagerly anticipated the trip, both the netball and Disneyland aspects! Three jampacked days were spent playing netball against other schools and clubs from across the country, taking part in coaching master classes and spending time in the Disneyland Paris parks.

Day 1 and 5 were spent travelling and being thoroughly entertained by our coach driver, Stewart, and owing to our well-timed arrival at the B&B hotel on the outskirts of the Disney area we even managed a quick visit to the Disney Village on the first evening, something unexpected for the girls!

From day 2, the netballing began and the effort put in by the girls, especially when facing challenging opponents, was extremely praiseworthy. Each of the three teams took part in four netball matches throughout the morning and then spent the afternoon and evening in Disneyland Paris, broken up by an evening meal at King Ludwigs.

The morning of Day 3 was spent immersed in a coaching session where the students learnt different tactics for attacking, defending and shooting, alongside taking on certain challenges such as how far they could leap and how long they could hold a plank for. These tactics were invaluable for our match play the following day. This was followed by a visit to the Disneyland park again in the afternoon and evening, this time broken up by a meal at Planet Hollywood.

On Day 4 each of our teams were put into various competitions, dependent on ability, therefore they were playing against similarly matched teams and the games were much more exciting and well fought.

All teams worked extremely hard and well as teams and what was evident was that the girls’ netballing ability and their skills as team players improved considerably throughout the course of the trip. In the afternoon and evening the students were given some more time in the parks on what happened to be the 25th Anniversary of the park’s opening, soaking up the electric atmosphere, sampling some last rides, shopping and picking up presents for family members back home. That evening we were invited to a presentation evening, again at King Ludwig’s, where each of our teams managed to claim a trophy. This was an extremely successful trip and Miss Harrison, Mrs Spencer-Hall, Miss Leggott and Miss Richardson would like to thank our students for their super behaviour and participation throughout.

VALENCIA CF FOOTBALL TOUR PROVES TO BE A FANTASTIC EXPERIENCE On Friday 14th April 17 students and 2 staff set off from The Academy on a journey to Gatwick airport, before catching a flight directly to Valencia to embark on a 5 day football tour that proved to be the experience of a lifetime for the students involved.

The itinerary for the trip was very full and focused on giving the students a taste of what it is like to be a professional footballer at this massive club. The lads took part in five training sessions, all of which were run by Valencia CF coaching staff. Furthermore, they were all conducted on the ÂŁ11,000,000 training complex that is also used by first team stars such as Nani, Alves and Zaza.

We also saw the first team play at the sensational Mestalla stadium versus Sevilla. The atmosphere was brilliant and although the game somehow ended 0-0, it was entertaining and Valencia was unfortunate not to take all 3 points.

We played our own match whilst in Spain, again at the Valencia training complex, where we faced a team called Barrio De La Luz. Unfortunately we lost the game, but the highlights of the match were a world class save from Torrey Walker and a fine counter attacking move that was expertly finished by Oliver Webster. Both of these moments had the Valencia coaching staff on their feet and applauding!

Add to this swimming, a trip bowling, a football quiz, a visit to the Valencia CF megastore and a stadium tour and you can imagine how action packed the trip was.

We returned just before midnight on Tuesday 18th April and a truly fantastic time was had by all. It is important to add too, that the students from the academy showed a first class attitude, impeccable behaviour and respect throughout every aspect of the trip!

Let’s look forward to more of our students getting this incredible opportunity in the future.
