The Crowle Show is fast approaching, we have a new date this year, the show has been moved back a month to the 22nd July. We also have lots of new classes competitions and attractions while still keeping the traditional and well loved show attractions.

New for this year we have the Produce show, with over 80 classes there will be lots of competition but a chance for lots of prizes to be won. We also have a Gundog display for this year and a new beer tent run by Red Melon who specialise in outdoor events. The equestrian events are still on and we hope that boys girls men and women, inspired by the Olympics come down and enter the show jumping.

Isle Group of the Lincolnshire Trust News On Sunday 8th July there will be a guided walk round Far Ings National Nature Reserve. This reserve next to the Humber Bridge has a wealth of rare visiting and nesting birds including Bittern, Avocet, Marsh Harrier and Bearded Reedling.

The paths on the reserve are mainly flat and well maintained, so suitable for all.

Meet at the reserve (Ness end farm) 10.00 am The walks are open to anyone so do come along and find out more about this fascinating, unique place, we hope to see you there.

All our indoor meetings which commence in October are held in the Stephen Jones Hall at the rear of the Methodist Chapel, Low Street, Haxey on the first Thursday of the month at 7.30pm and everyone is welcome, you don’t have to be a member.

Isle of Axholme – North Ward Police Report Vicars Walk and Church Street, Crowle. Anti-Social Behaviour and Criminal Damage to Property.

During April there have been five calls regarding problems in this area. Three have related to damage to a garden wall which was in a poor state of repair, one was regarding damage to the window and mirror of a parked car and the other was a PCSO 7576 PCSO 7889 PC1717 complaint of noise from a group of youths on quad bikes. The Paul Fearon Wendy Frear Graham Godley Neighbourhood Policing Team are conducting more patrols in the area and working with North Lincolnshire Council Safer Neighbourhoods. CCCTV cameras have been provided to the victims of the damaged wall. Potts Lane Car Park and Market Place, Crowle. Anti-social behaviour and vehicle nuisance in the car park and youths congregating and causing a nuisance to local residents.

During April there was one call for service for Potts Lane and three for the Market Place. The wall to Potts Lane car park was damaged as a result of a non stop road traffic collision and enquiries are on going with regards to that offence. The calls to the Market Place related to youths causing a disturbance by shouting and generally messing around on BMX bikes using the marble benching to conduct stunt tricks and concern about youths running across the busy main road recovering their football. The vehicles used to bring some of the BMX riders into the area have been identified and the owners of the vehicles have been visited by the Police. They have been given suitable words of advice and warned of the consequences of their behaviour if they continue to visit the area on their bikes. The Neighbourhood Team include the area on the regular patrol matrix and stop and check any vehicles and persons in the area. Any offences revealed are dealt with positively.

UPDATE last month’s Number Two Priority related to suspicious activity around the area of Seven Lakes Country Park in Ealand. Regular patrols and enquiries have been made in the area and persons have been identified and intelligence submitted. This Priority has been closed although the Neighbourhood Team will continue to patrol and pay passing attention to the area.

Hi Visibility Patrols Amcotts and Keadby regarding Acquisitive Crime. During April there have been a number of crimes committed in the Axholme North Ward relating to aggravated burglary, burglary and a robbery of cash in transit.

The crimes are being investigated by the Serious Acquisitive Crime team of the CID and the investigating officers are in contact with the victims.

The seriousness of these crimes has raised concerns amongst local residents. In order to reassure the community, additional resources have been patrolling the area. These have included uniformed and plain clothes officers along with support from specialist departments such as the roads crime section (a specialist unit who target criminals who travel to commit crime). The Neighbourhood Policing Team has also provided additional patrols and will continue to do so.

The investigations relating to the various offences are still on going but if any one has any information please contact PC Graham Godley or any members of the Neighbourhood Policing Team and any information passed will be dealt with in strictest confidence.

Residents are asked to be extra vigilant paying particular attention to their home and personal security and taking note about any incidents, people or vehicles in the area which they believe may be suspicious. PC Godley over the last weekend attended one call made in good faith about a possible burglary in progress. This turned out to be relations of the home owner calling late at night to collect items of furniture by arrangement but the Police would rather attend and deal with those involved at the time than be informed the next day when should any offences have been committed, the offenders are more difficult to trace.

Metal and Cable Thefts There have been a number of calls regarding theft of metal and cable from various locations around the Isle. If you witness anything you believe to be suspicious with persons working on telephone or power lines please telephone the police as soon as possible in order that those involved can be checked and verified that they are there legitimately. Also persons collecting scrap have to have waste carriers licences. Some use the excuse of collecting scrap metal in order to visit properties to commit other offences such as theft and burglary. If you have doubts about anyone collecting in your area, please record any description of the suspects and if possible any vehicle details before reporting the matter to the police. By doing this officers attending can keep observations whilst on route to the area in care the suspects have moved on to another street or village. What an Achievement!

What an achievement! Sixty years as our monarch and still going strong. Whether we are Royalists or Republicans, HM Queen Elizabeth is a remarkable lady. I have to admit to enjoying ‘royal’ occasions with all the pomp and ceremony. So I was in my element when she came to give out Maundy Money to pensioners in Lincoln Cathedral a few years ago.

As a priest in the Church of England I have to swear allegiance to Her Majesty (and the Bishop) and their successors before ordination and every time I move parish. I personally have never found that a problem because I generally work with local people rather than Royalty and Bishops.

What an achievement! The Olympic Stadia are completed on time and the torch has started on its journey of 8,000 miles round the UK. It comes to this part of the world on 26th June. The torch won’t come to the Isle but won’t be far away. The torch relay is just a prelude to what we hope will be a glittering Opening Ceremony and a festival of many different kinds of sports – that is for the sports fans!

What an achievement! Whether we are Royalists or Republicans, Sports fans or not, God still finds it in His heart to love us.

Arts Mark Gold The pupils and staff at Althorpe and Keadby Primary School are very proud and delighted that they have, once again, been given the prestigious Arts Mark Gold award in recognition of all the wonderful work they do in the Arts.

An Arts Mark Assessor visited the school in March 2012 and spent the afternoon talking to staff and pupils; observing music lessons in action and looking at all the school’s resources, work and achievements to date.

It is a great achievement and recognises all the hard work and the enthusiasm which the staff and pupils give to their work in the Arts. Ethan Freeston in Year 2 spoke for us all when he said: “I am very proud of getting this award.�

Watoto Chidrens' Choir from Kampala, Uganda are coming to Belton and will be giving a concert on Sunday 3rd June at 6.30pm in All Saints' Church. The choir will be staying with families on the Monday and then leaving for Bradford on Tuesday 5th June. This will be the third choir that we have hosted and I am sure they will be as brilliant as the previous ones. There are 22 children aged 7 to 16yrs and 10 adults. It is the weekend of the Queen's Jubilee and will be one way of celebrating that so please tell your friends and neighbours and invite them to come to a memorable evening of song and dance, Ugandan style.

Entrance is free and there are no tickets so first come first served for the best seats!!!

There will be an opportunity to give to the work of Watoto Child Care Ministries during the concert and, those of us who were privileged to visit Uganda in 2008, can testify to the amazing work that is done for orphaned children with the help of our money.

Friends of Althorpe and Keadby Primary School Complete the Initial Development of Bramblebank Wood, Community Nature Area The Friends of Althorpe and Keadby Primary School are delighted to announce that the first phase in the development of the Althorpe and Keadby Community Nature Area is now complete.

The Friends secured £79,270 in funding by the following organisations: LEADER funding made available through the Rural Development Programme for England, which is jointly funded by Defra and the European Union, providing a grant of £44,770; The Landfill Communities Fund of Waste Recycling Group (WRG) which is administered by the Environmental Body WREN, who provided a grant of £34,000; SSE Keadby Power Station, who contributed £3,740; and Keadby with Althorpe Parish Council, who contributed £500.

This landmark project was to develop the area of woodland behind the school field, backing onto the riverbank, providing a natural woodland environment for the whole community to explore and experience.

Work began in July 2011 to clear the dense undergrowth of litter and deadwood and get the ground ready for planting.

There has been an ongoing programme of community events including regular Sunday sessions to plant bulbs, shrubs and trees, community litter picks, half term activity days and a very popular Halloween event which was a great success. The school has been involved from the beginning with the children having nature walks, art lessons and activity days in the woodland as well as helping to plant trees and bulbs.

A wider variety of trees and shrubs have been introduced and areas created to encourage wildlife.

There are various bird, bat, and insect boxes dotted around the area and even a hedgehog house. A living hazel bird hide has been planted to keep within the ethos of a living woodland and a bird feeding area has also been developed which the school children have taken ownership of.

There are woodland sculptures and face carvings which the Friends hope the whole community will enjoy visiting and exploring, raising their awareness of environmental and sustainability issues.

Now the initial development is drawing to a close, the Friends are in the process of setting up a varied programme of regular events that will appeal to a wide range of people, such as general maintenance, minibeast/bird spotting, Spring and Autumn watch, den building and woodland workshops.

Future plans are to continue to encourage local groups and the community to access the woodland freely as well as continue to develop it through finding new funding and training opportunities alongside the Friends’ own fundraising events to mark occasions and celebrations.

The Grand Opening is taking place on Friday 25th May 2012 starting at 1.30 pm with Andrew Percy MP officially opening Bramblebank Wood at 2.00 pm. There will be an afternoon of activities including performances from the school children who will be reading poetry, demonstrating creative artwork on a natural theme and a samba band performance.

Sarah Tate, Head teacher of Althorpe and Keadby Primary School, said: “Bramblebank Wood has made an enormous difference to our school.

Classes are now able to enjoy a more creative outdoor learning environment, with Art, Science and Games lessons taking place in there. Practical first-hand experiences are enjoyed by all, with the wood continuously being developed and maintained by members of the Gardening Club.

A huge ‘thank you’ to the Friends of School group for their vision, dedication and determination to make this project happen.”

“Bramblebank Wood was a fantastic job,” says Michele Davy, Project Manager. “The unique vision to develop and regenerate the woodland has resulted, with the combined efforts of the whole community, into a wildlife friendly and magical space. ‘The Times Spelling Bee’ Competition Five, Year 7 students recently took part in ‘The Times Spelling Bee’ online heats at The Axholme Academy. This was the first time that the heats had taken place online so this was a new experience for both the staff and students taking part.

The students who took part were Phoebe Spafford, Holly Dowson, Laura Cowlbeck and Jay Johnson with Bethany Cowlbeck as a reserve. The students had been chosen as they had come out as the five top spellers in a spelling competition held in our Spelling Bee Club on a Tuesday lunch-time.

With the girls putting in lots of practice by using the games on the Times Spelling Bee website and practicing at the lunch-time club the day was finally here.

The players were given an opportunity to simulate the online heat with practice words until they were comfortable with the online format. Each team member could progress through the words at their own pace and had 30 seconds to start typing using their computer’s keyboard, and two minutes to complete the spelling of each word. The girls continued to spell words until they got one wrong and when all four players have incorrectly spelt a word, the online heat ended.

The team scored 17 points in total and unfortunately didn’t make it through to the semi-finals. Well done to the girls for taking part as it was a very nerve wracking experience.

Year 5 Spelling Bee Following on from ‘The Times Spelling Bee’ our partner primary schools attended The Axholme Academy to take part in the Year 5 Spelling Bee on Thursday 3rd May. This is a fun event which introduces the pupils to the format of the Spelling Bee where they are shown a presentation and a brief outline of what to expect if they wish to audition when they join us in Year 7.

Jay Johnson & Bethany Cowlbeck also helped out with the event as they had both been involved with the online heats for ‘The Times Spelling Bee’. Jay helped spell any incorrect spellings and Bethany helped time the different rounds.

There were teams of three pupils from Crowle Primary School (‘The Three Buzzy Bees’), Althorpe & Keadby School (‘The Killer Keadby Team’), St Norbert’s Catholic Primary School (St Norbert’s Super Spellers’), Luddington & Garthorpe Primary School (‘Witch’s Brew’) & Eastoft Primary School (‘Eastoft Elites’).

In the first round the teams worked together to answer spellings on a mini whiteboard with 2 minutes to answer Easy words worth 1 point, 2 minutes for Medium Words worth 2 points and 1 minute to answer Hard words worth 3 points. In the second round the team nominated one pupil to answer medium words worth 2 points each. The winner of this round was Lewis Fowles of St Norbert’s Catholic School winning a £5.00 gift card for the Vue Cinema with 30 points.

The winning team at the end of both rounds was Crowle Primary School with 96 points with each team member winning a notebook & erasers.

Having spent 48 years in journalism, Roy Briggs has spent the last two years of his retirement producing his own life story which includes many of the fascinating stories he covered during his media career.

Roy, 72, who lived in the Isle of Axholme at Low Burnham, near Epworth, for eight years during the 1970’s, retired to Scarborough in 2005 but he and his wife Joyce plan to move back to the Crowle area to be closer to their family.

It was his granddaughter, Emily Briggs, 15 who lives at Fieldside, Crowle, who designed the front cover of his book featuring a cross with a blackbird perched on it.

Roy says: “I’m so proud of Emily for producing such an eyecatching cover. It’s just what I wanted as it powerfully illustrates how religion has played such a significant role throughout my life.

“Emily was only 14 at the time and hopefully it will help her CV when she leaves school as she is hoping to study art.”

The book entitled ‘Eve of Forgiveness: A Journalist’s Journey’ follows his life through almost half a century as a professional writer and the author will make a £1 donation to Cancer Research UK from every copy sold.

Roy, who originally hails from Rotherham, spent 28 years in news reporting followed by 20 years specialising in horse racing - his long-time hobby.

As a teenager, finding himself trapped in an engineering course at College of which he hated every minute, he was rescued by a blackbird which built a nest in the porch of his home.

This unusual nesting site transformed Roy’s life when featured in a local paper.

It was the magical moment he knew for certain what his future career should be.

Switching over to a commercial course in order to learn shorthand and typing, Roy studied hard and at 17 left college with all the qualifications he needed to land a job on ‘The Star’ as a junior reporter at the Sheffield head office.

He spent eight years on the paper’s editorial staff before leaving to become a self employed freelance journalist, and in 1974 moved to Doncaster from where he launched the Briggs News Agency which grew into one of the most prolific and successful freelance businesses in the North, taking on three more reporting staff to help serve provincial papers, the national dailies, TV and radio stations.

In 1984 the roving reporter sold his Doncaster agency and moved to Bridlington to set up East Yorkshire Press Agency specialising in racing news and features which kept him busy for his final 20 years in journalism.

A Journalist’s Journey embraces a wide variety of human interest stories ranging from the bizarre, humorous and tragic, whilst his racing career saw the launch of a successful media campaign to expose a scandal involving cruelty to ex-racehorses.

Looking back on his near half a century of writing, he rates his three year campaign to push racing’s rulers into providing some form of ‘safety net’ to prevent former racehorses ending up as cruelty victims in the wrong hands, as the highlight of his career.

The second part of his memoir carries an important message on forgiveness.

Roy disowned his father after he tried to cheat him of an inheritance from a relative of his late mother.

Over 30 years later a spiritual experience (“The word of The Lord came to me and I obeyed”) prompted him to finally forgive. Within days a relative of his father died resulting in the writer receiving a second legacy.
