The Isle of Axholme

Where You Live

Your Local History

Adapted by Anthony Catherall

THE NORMANS continued Justices under the Mowbray’s was in the shape of the Manor Court. It settled disputes between tenants. It had the power to try offending tenants and to condemn to death for theft. The Manor Court remained in operation long after the Mowbray’s. The counties of England were divided up by the King amongst his followers in return for armed service in time of war. The counties were divided up into Hundreds, and Hundreds divided into Manors. One hundred Manors made up a Hundred. The Manor land was divided up into the domain (Lord’s Land) and the villeins land. The villeins, as rent, had to plough four acres for the Lord and supply two oxen for the Lord for seven days a year and work three days a week on the lord’s land. He must follow the Lord to war and sit on his court of justice. He also had rights. He could not be ejected from his land as long as he performed his duties. These Villeins were called copyholders because they had their conditions of land tenure written down and they had a copy. Cottars held small parcels of land in return for a certain rent. Porcarii were free occupiers who rented the privilege of feeding pigs for payment. Servi had few rights and were almost slaves. Most of these social classes were set up in Saxon times and carried over into Norman times. The manor lands were divided up into three large fields. One was left fallow each year. The crops sowed on the others included wheat, hemp and flax. The whole village ploughed, sowed and reaped together each field. Despite this, the fields were divided into strips between the various tenants to ensure that no one hot all the poor land or all the good land. There were common fields for grazing. According to the Doomsday Book, Epworth Manor had sixteen acres of common meadowland and one square mile of woodland. In addition, the Epworth tenants had the deed of John de Mowbray that granted free use of the waste lands in the west of the parish. In 1795 an act of parliament was obtained to enclose the commons of Owston Ferry, Haxey, Belton and Epworth. There was a great deal of haggling about the division of the lands. The locals resisted the enclosure of the arable lands that of course, are still to some extent in strips in certain parts of Epworth and Haxey parishes. Iain Bramble is a young architect with over 12 years experience in delivering award winning high quality design solutions at several large design lead practices, working on both a regional and national stage. Iain Bramble is now taking this experience and applying theses standards to the domestic sector. It is the aim of his practice, Iain Bramble Architects, to provide people with the opportunity to use an Architect to help realise their dream home, be it a new property or redesigning and extending an existing . Iain Bramble believes good design can enrich lives, creating enjoyable spaces and should be available for all in their own home. In understanding the pressures of homeowners Iain offers a service to discuss projects outside of normal office hours, being available to meet potential clients in their homes in the evenings or weekends. This not only helps working homeowners, but allows Iain experience how the owners use their homes. This allows appropriate design solutions to the specific needs of individual homeowners to be developed. Iain says ―Establishing a practice in Epworth is an exciting opportunity to develop a local friendly architectural practice in a town with a very strong community spirit and supportive of the wide variety of shops and services which have located themselves within the town‖.

Now the dust has settled The General Election is over. We, the British people have spoken. We don‘t like any party enough to give them an absolute majority. The Tory/Lib Dem coalition has caused even more bad emotion because of those who think the wrong deal has been done. Our next General election should be on the first Thursday in May 2015, less than 60 months away. But for those who do not back the coalition and for those who voted Labour or for any of the smaller parties, it‘s 59 months too far away. What should we do? In the Bible, the apostle Paul writes to Timothy. ―I urge that petitions, prayers, requests and thanksgivings be offered to God for all people, for kings and all others in authority.‖ It will be easier for some to pray for the new Government than for others. However Paul urges all of us, regardless of political persuasion, to pray. He doesn‘t stop at rulers in the UK. When we pray for President Barak Obama of the USA, we should also pray, just as fervently, for the much loathed President Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe. Yes, we are to sit in the presence of God and bring all the rulers of the world, good and bad, to God to pray for them. This really pleases God. Axholme, Doncaster TTL and Retford Camera Clubs met at Haxey Church Hall recently for the annual 3-way competition. Ralph Bennett of Newark was invited to judge. Entries from the clubs were mixed together, so there was no way to tell one from another. At the end of the evening the scores were incredibly close. Prints and digital images were submitted, with Axholme winning in the digital image section. The overall winner was Doncaster with 400 points, Axholme coming in second with 396 points. Retford were close on their heels with 394 points. Axholme members brought sweet and savoury snacks to provide a lovely buffet supper which was enjoyed by all. In a recent digital image competition held at Sheffield, 24 clubs from the area submitted entries, including Axholme Camera Club. The Judge had a hard time of it with around 125 entries to mark. Axholme did very well for a small country club, being placed joint 3rd. Once again Kevin Wells visited the club for a practical session with members. Camera settings can be a bit of a mystery to some, but Kevin was there to help and explain in his usual clear and friendly manner. It proved a useful evening. Open to anyone is an evening show of the North East and Midlands Photographic Exhibition on DVD. This is an opportunity to see many top quality exhibits from the best photographers in the area. The show takes place at Haxey Church Hall on Wednesday 16th June at 7.30pm. There will be a small door charge to include refreshments. All will be made very welcome. The rest of the year's programme to the summer break consists of competitions, photo opportunities locally and a Photoshop evening on June 30th. It is not too late to join in as a visitor, and a reduced membership fee operates if you wish to become a full member at this stage.

Best Wishes

CROWLE SHOW 2010 Sunday 27th June

New for 2010 Laser Clay Pigeon Shooting Batons of Steel Majorettes Sheep Section Axholme Ferrets Show Crowle‘s very own agricultural show is getting bigger this year. This year‘s show is taking place on the 27th of June. The best of the Isle and beyond will be showcased on Godnow Rd in Crowle. This year it will be bigger and better than ever. The organising committee hopes that the fabulous new attractions and wider range of classes will bring even more people out to enjoy the day. Among the usual entertainment, displays and activities, new attractions this year include Laser Clay Pigeon Shooting, the ‗Batons of Steel‘ Majorettes, the Axholme Ferrets Show and ferret racing. The attractions this year hope to promote all aspects of our town both as a rural center and as a great place to live. We hope to bring livestock and local produce to the forefront of this years show. Following the success of local butcher Dave Parkin‘s cattle classes last year, these will continue to be run alongside new sheep classes. The horse section goes from strength to strength, make sure you see the glamorous ladies riding side saddle and the showjumping which promises to be as hotly contested as ever. The dog show features a whopping 156 classes, plus a companion dog show in aid of Macmillan cancer research. Other attractions include vintage cars, engines and motorbikes; trade stands and shops from all over the county and much, much more! We want as many people as possible to come down and celebrate our town this year. Get involved in the clay pigeon shooting, support your local businesses, compete in the classes or just come along to meet your friends.

Crowle show is on the 27th of June 2010, it will be well signposted on Godnow Rd in Crowle. Tickets cost £5 per Adult, £3 Concessions & Children and Family tickets cost £10 (2 adults & 3 children) For more information and for all schedules visit the website

Phase 1 Whether you’re a shopaholic or a reluctant browser, most would agree that convenience is a key word when it comes to the charms and chores of shopping. What could be more convenient than the shops that are there on our doorstop? Don‘t pass them by as if they are somehow second rate. They are not. In fact convenience is only a part of the story as to why they deserve our support. Here is a little food for thought... Jumping into the car and heading for that out-oftown super store or shopping mall may seem a good idea. But it can end up a time-wasting, costly and frustrating experience. Time, they say, is precious. But how many hours are wasted in traffic jams, just getting to your destination – and then driving round to find a place to park (and often having to pay for the privilege to do that, too!) In the meantime, the pennies you think you will save turn into pounds of extra expense. Strange, but true, most people don‘t view it that way. Why? – Because the extra expense is not shown on the receipt of goods they buy. But it all comes out of the wallet just the same!

‗A walk to the local shops is healthier... and cheaper in more ways than one!‘ Another thing which is often overlooked is the cost to the environment – something which is on the minds of a growing number of people in these days of climate changes. Unnecessary journeys simply add to all those CO2 emissions which are threatening to choke our globe. A walk to the local shops is healthier... and cheaper in more ways than one! If it‘s a friendly, personal service you are after, then there‘s nothing finer than a shop in the market place! Such attention is a tradition that has its roots embedded in the history of each village and hamlet in the area. ―It wasn‘t until I tried my local shops that I realised just how much they stock,‖ said one shopper. ―I was amazed at the variety – and the costs were very reasonable too.‖ The recent economic downturn has also had an impact on the local economy, which is why it is more important than ever to shop locally and support our local businesses.

Phase 2 With so much choice from a first class quality butcher who offers a fine range of meats and delicatessen's and a pharmacy with everything you may need to get over the winter blues to a florist who has many years experience and designs flower arrangements for any occasion, why would you want to go else where? The growth of our villages in recent years has seen an increase in facilities and business services. But they can only survive if the people they are designed to serve support them.

Let’s face it, we’d all miss them if they were not there! Support your local businesses in Crowle Market Place Crowle has undergone a major £3m+ development that has transformed the town‘s market place into a bustling centre. Visitors and businesses can now enjoy the new functional, attractive and safe environment. The redevelopment of the market place and more open space means that the centre can also be used for outdoor events and activities, such as Farmer‘s, European and Christmas markets, as well as craft fairs and fetes.

18

Further developments are also in the pipeline for a large convenience store, small business units and office space, with residential accommodation on the upper floors, and a brand new bistro/café in the market place, including an area for outside seating. This is all thanks to The Crowle Market Place Delivery Group, North Lincolnshire Council and Yorkshire Forward, who have turned the town‘s ideas into reality. For more information about the development, contact North Lincolnshire Council‘s Rural Renaissance Team on 01724 297695 or email renaissance@northlincs.gov.uk

Join the celebrations Come down to Crowle Market Place on 3 July 2010 to join in the official opening celebrations. There will be entertainment throughout the day for all the family and you can shop ‗til you drop! On the day you will also be able to meet your local business owners and members of the delivery group who can answer all your questions about the redevelopment of the town.

CROWLE TOWN COUNCIL NEWSLETTER ISSUE 6 Manor Park.

A consultation exercise took place on March 20th to find out the views of people in regard to the redevelopment of Manor Park (also known as Johnson's Lane Playing Field) several local residents added their comments to a growing number of suggestions put forward by local organisations, schools and residents of Crowle and Ealand. The views expressed will form a data bank from which plans will be drawn for the future of this facility and it is intended that it should cater for all ages in the community. Recently a grant from North Lincolnshire Council has provided 45 thousand pounds for play equipment for young people aged 8 -13 years. This grant will also mean that other funding agencies can be approached so that other age groups can also be catered for. One factor under consideration is the protection from noise and nuisance coming from the park for those people living next to it so that their peace of mind and quality of life is not undermined. The work so far on the park has been done by volunteers and it is hoped that the public meeting to form the Town Plan will draw even more people into the future shaping of Crowle and Ealand. Town Plan. There is already evidence to show Crowle and Ealand are responding to change, both in enhanced recreational facilities in Ealand and Crowle market place which it is hoped will draw new retail outlets into the town. These changes have come about with the participation of local people who have contributed to the planning and administration of these changes. But there is still much to do particularly as the community is still growing, that is why it is necessary to have a Town Plan. The town plan will give a picture of how our community is made up, for example: whether people work locally or commute to work, if they use public transport to get to work, what type of accommodation they have and what their future needs might be. Local shops and recreational facilities and many other facets of community life also need to be featured so that as a community we can see how we are and where we need to develop our resources for everyone's benefit. The second stage of the town plan will involve planning for the future and this is where your views count. A Public Meeting to deal with the town plan will take place in the Community Hall on Wednesday June 16th. at 7.00p.m. The main purpose of the meeting will be to register what people want as far as future developments are concerned and to elect a Steering Committee to produce a document dealing with research on the community as it stands plus plans for the future. Once published the Town Plan will be a useful consultative document for both planning authorities and developers, and should act as a means to attract businesses and recreational facilities. Developments in Crowle and Ealand can only respond to the wishes of the general public where their interests have been expressed, this has already happened in a number of projects but what is needed now is a broad look at the future and a wholesome approach to planning. This is your opportunity to meet with others and determine the way forward. The Lodge. The Lodge at the cemetery has now completed its refurbishment which includes: a new flat roof, improved wiring and plumbing, a redecoration throughout with new fitted carpets, an Improved kitchen /dining area, newly appointed bathroom and a new conservatory /utility area. The property is now available for rent with some minor duties being attached to the tenancy agreement. The next projected development at the cemetery will be new signage (indicating times of opening and information parking restrictions), and the refurbishment of one to of advertisements the chapels as a designated 22 about Please mention “The Arrow when responding place of worship with the other chapel used for storage.

Market Place. A look at the market place will confirm that much has changed with the first phase of development coming to completion with all the major infrastructure in place. The second phase of development will include the buildings which will accommodate new retail outlets and businesses. This is a big opportunity to attract businesses into the community and stimulate the local economy whilst enjoying the new facilities the town market place has to offer. CCTV. Both cameras have now been upgraded to improve their effectiveness in providing evidence of any behaviour which may cause concern. The two cameras now cover all the market place and the new developments to the north of the market place as well as extensive views along the High Street and the approach to St. Oswald's Church along Church Street. May Council Meeting. The May council meeting will be an important event as two extra meetings: The Annual Meeting and The Annual General Meeting are scheduled to precede the council meeting at at 7.00p.m. the meetings will include a progress report of the past year by ward councillors and the town mayor. The town mayor will also introduce his proposals for business during the next session ending in May 2011.
